As many as 200 “Australians” are believed to have gone to Syria to join the jihad resistance. Many are there to provide humanitarian assistance (you wish!)  in a horrific conflict that has led to more than 100,000 deaths and more than 1 million refugees. Others are going to fight. Some are going over to provide aid but end up as fighters. Al-Qaeda’s puritanical and blood-soaked version of Islam is hardly overwhelmingly popular in the Middle East or Africa but its battlefield success does garner admiration.

 Islam means submission, people. Its not a popularity contest.

People around the world are marking World Hijab Day. Organisers say they aim to have one million Muslim and non-Muslim women worldwide wear a hijab for one day to improve religious understanding.

It’s World Hijab Day with events being held around Australia.

Rebecca Kay is holding a celebration in Sydney’s Pitt Street Mall and is encouraging all women to try on a hijab.

“We’re inviting all women to come and experience the life of a day of a hijabi (a female who wears a hijab), and see what all the fuss is about and just try to create bonds and answer questions,” Ms Kay said.

“A lot of the time we see men speaking on behalf of women when it comes to our dress attire and the women are coming out and saying that it’s our time to speak and that we wish to represent ourselves.”

In Pakistan they didn’t get to speak:

Some 200 veiled women staged a rally in front of the Lahore Press Club on Tuesday to mark World Hijab Day, but only men gave speeches.

Lydia Shelly says the day also encourages Australians to walk in the shoes of a Muslim women with the aim of improving religious harmony.

“The biggest assumption about Muslim women who wear the hijab is that we are one big homogenous group,” Ms Shelly wrote on Facebook. “Muslim women who wear the hijab are from all walks of life, nationalities and have different ways that they express their modesty through their wearing of the hijab. Yay for diversity in the hijabi community!”

Around the world, people tweeted pictures of their support for the global movement.

But where is the tolerance for us?

Now the bigots are stripping pictures from galleries.

Does anyone in particular have the right to depict a hijab in an artwork?

Should there be artistic limits to whether you explore religious or cultural items in your work?

Our story this week about artists using the Muslim headdress as imagery in their work has caused quite a stir. The story centred on a Melbourne gallery that pulled the work of a photographer which featured young women with their hair arranged in the style of a hijab.

Those shouldn’t actually be questions in a healthy society. They should be assertions of right.

A study of “extremist groups” in Sweden finds that Islamic extremists headbangers pose the biggest threat of terrorist violence.

The study looked at extremists on the far left and far right, but finds that an election year there, and a possible return of Swedes who have joined the Syrian jihad, increase the potential for violence. Sweden’s national police agency, Säpo, reported that at least 75 Swedes have gone to Syria to join the fight against dictator Bashar al-Assad.

The report was presented Friday to Democracy Minister Birgitta Ohlsson.
