Keir Starmer hit back at Donald Trump‘s Nato rebuke, saying the alliance was ‘in America’s interest’ – but acknowledged that European allies must do more.
The Prime Minister’s comments come after the US President stepped up his threats to quit the bloc as tensions continued to grow over the Iran war.

President Donald Trump criticized Pope Leo XIV, labeling him as “WEAK on Crime, and terrible for Foreign Policy,” and added that he does not want a Pope who opposes the actions of the Trump administration.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump stated that he likes Pope Leo’s brother “much better” than he likes the Pope. Trump also noted he does not want a Pope “who thinks it’s OK for Iran to have a Nuclear Weapon,” or who “thinks it’s terrible that America attacked Venezuela.”
“Pope Leo is WEAK on Crime, and terrible for Foreign Policy,” Trump wrote. “He talks about ‘fear of the Trump Administration, but doesn’t mention the FEAR that the Catholic Church, and all other Christian Organizations, had during COVID when they were arresting priests, ministers, and everybody else, for holding Church Services, even when going outside, and being ten and even twenty feet apart.”
“I don’t want a Pope who thinks it’s OK for Iran to have a Nuclear Weapon,” Trump added. “I don’t want a Pope who thinks it’s terrible that America attacked Venezuela, a Country that was sending massive amounts of Drugs into the United States and, even worse, emptying their prisons, including murderers, drug dealers, and killers, into our Country.
The Catholic pope suggested that a “just war” with Iran would require that we wait until the deployment the bomb.

The US military says it will begin blockading Iranian ports on Monday at 14:00 GMT, allowing ships not coming or going to Iran to pass through the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran’s Revolutionary Guard says the Strait of Hormuz is open for civilian vessels, but says that military ships “will be dealt with severely”.
Gulf states look for alternatives as Strait of Hormuz remains effectively closed
The Iranians have denied that any US military vessels passed through the Strait of Hormuz, and are threatening consequences if any military vessel attempts to do so.
‘Soon you’ll be nostalgic for $4–$5 gas,’ Iran’s Ghalibaf tells US
Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, the speaker of Iran’s parliament who led the country’s delegation in the Islamabad talks, has again addressed Trump’s threat to blockade the Strait of Hormuz.
“Enjoy the current pump figures,” he wrote on X, alongside a map showing prices at gas stations near the White House.
“With the so-called ‘blockade’, Soon you’ll be nostalgic for $4–$5 gas.”
President Donald Trump announced Sunday the U.S. Navy will begin blockading ships in the Strait of Hormuz, the news coming after he said Iran promised to open the strait but ultimately did not.
The sermon comes months after the jihadi preacher was found to have breached the Racial Discrimination Act by the Federal Court in a number of antisemitic speeches, which included calling Jews “vile”, “treacherous” and the “descendants of pigs and monkeys”.
Imagine the embarrassment of Australian authorities and the witless establishment media when they discover that what this “extremist” preacher is preaching is not actually a twisting of Islam, but is just mainstream Islam. But by then it will likely be far too late. The Albanese government will work assiduously to rid the country of “white supremacists” while the Islamic jihadis are working all the while toward conquest and Islamization.

“Jihadi preacher Wissam Haddad mocks Christianity and preaches hate against Jews during new sermon,” by Caroline Marcus, Sky News, April 8, 2026:
The notorious jihadi preacher linked to one of the Bondi gunmen is back spreading hatred against Jews and Christians in a new sermon.
Excerpts from the new 30-minute speech by Sydney preacher Wissam Haddad will be revealed on ‘Sharri’ on Sky News at 8pm AEST….
In the sermon, Haddad takes aim at the moderate Muslims who mix with “kuffar”, an Arabic word for infidels or non-believers, singling out those who spread messages of “interfaith” dialogue on TikTok and Instagram.
“You see them say things that have nothing to do with Islam, which is alien to Islam or giving wrong information or you find they themselves are mixing with the kuffar,” Haddad says in the sermon.
“They are preaching things like interfaith, that we’re all one, that we’re all from Adam.
“One of them is going as far as being in a video with a rabbi, who said that we are all the children of God and he’s nodding his head as this person is saying this and we know this is something that is kuffar.”…
He also cites part of the Hadith – a collection of sayings by the prophet Muhammad – telling his followers Jews, Christians and even moderate Muslims, will end up in hell.
“The Jews split into 71 sects, one of which will be in paradise and 70 in hell,” Haddad says.
“The Christians split into 72 sects, every one of which will be in hell and one in the paradise.”…
“They celebrate the supposed crucifixion of – and I don’t see how it’s a celebration,” Haddad says.
“Their God’s being killed and dies and they’re celebrating. It’s a Good Friday. Makes no sense.”…
The Islamic Republic of Iran now claims that the ceasefire agreement with the U.S. was meant to cover Israel as well, so that the Jewish state should also stop its attacks on Hezbollah in Lebanon. Both Israel and the United States flatly reject that claim, and a day into the ceasefire, Israel made that point forcefully by carrying out “its heaviest strikes on Lebanon since the latest conflict with Hezbollah broke out last month.”
The contemporary political landscape has devolved into a theater of the absurd where Democrat-voting Jews and self-described “Progressive Liberals” have effectively morphed into a PR wing for the Mullahs of Iran. This phenomenon demonstrates a level of historical amnesia that borders on the suicidal, as this faction has traded the ancestral survival instincts forged at Masada for a terminal case of Severe TDS. That’s the real reason it’s turning into a killing field.
The Iranian Revolutionary Guard and Hezbollah are using the Lebanese—all Lebanese—as human shields.
In Beirut in the past 24 hours, there hasn’t been any Israeli strike since that large scale attack on Wednesday. It appears that the US administration is pressuring Israel to accept at least a reduction of violence, if not a ceasefire, because its priority is to save that deal with Iran.
But Iran has interests to ensure that deal holds, it is continuing to insist that the Lebanon front is included.
As the US and Iran prepare for talks in Pakistan, Israel continues to bombard Lebanon after killing at least 300 people and injuring 1,150 in nationwide strikes on Wednesday.
The Israeli military says more than 40 Hezbollah fighters have been killed in southern Lebanon over the past week, and 50 infrastructure sites destroyed.
The Israeli military has been threatening to target ambulances in Lebanon, accusing Hezbollah of making “extensive military use” of them.
Iran: the IRGC came out with a new map recently where ships must go.
They are demanding tariffs and charges that ships should pay to Iran to go through.
Hezbollah continues to target northern Israel with drones and missiles
The Lebanese armed group says its fighters targeted the Kiryat Shmona settlement in northern Israel with a squadron of attack drones on Friday.
Ireland’s foreign minister says she is “appalled” by the Israeli attacks on Lebanon and has called for the US-Iran ceasefire to be extended to the country.
What Vance is saying is Pakistan passed different versions of the same proposal to Washington and Tehran, giving each side a text that did not match what the other had sent.
Result: the biggest day of Israeli bombing in Lebanon, 250+ killed.
Iran’s Judiciary Chief Gholamhossein Mohseni-Ejei has ordered courts to expedite trials and executions for Iranians accused of helping foreign enemies, particularly the United States and Israel.
His directive demands that final verdicts, including capital punishment and the confiscation of assets, be carried out without delay or leniency to maintain a deterrent effect against Iranians who are opposed to the Islamic regime.
These expedited measures specifically target those labeled as “enemy agents,” with seized funds reportedly being diverted to state-controlled compensation funds.
“The Islamic Iran is exercising its undeniable right to legitimate self-defense, and we will continue this defense in the most powerful manner possible until our national security is guaranteed,” says Mohseni-Ejei.– visegrad.24

This is the first informed, intelligent assessment of this conflict.
All the US leadership had to do was to act on something no one else was willing do.
Trump, Hormuz and the End of the Free Ride
For half a century, Western strategists have known that the Strait of Hormuz is the acute point where energy, sea power and political will intersect. That knowledge is not in dispute. What is new in this war with Iran is that the United States, under Donald Trump, has chosen not to rush to “solve” the problem. In Hegelian terms, he is refusing an easy synthesis in order to force the underlying contradiction to the surface.
The old thesis was simple: the US guarantees open sea lanes in the Gulf, and everyone else structures their economies and politics around that free insurance. Europe and the UK embraced ambitious green policies, ran down hard‑power capabilities and lectured Washington on multilateral virtue, secure in the assumption that American carriers would always appear off Hormuz. The political class behaved as if the American security guarantee were a law of nature, not a contingent choice. Their conduct today is closer to Chamberlain than Churchill: temporising, issuing statements, hoping the storm will pass without a fundamental reordering of their responsibilities.
Trump’s antithesis is to withhold the automatic guarantee at the moment of maximum stress. Militarily, the US can break Iran’s residual ability to contest the Strait; that is not the binding constraint. The point is to delay that act. By allowing a closure or semi‑closure to bite, Trump ensures that the immediate pain is concentrated in exactly the jurisdictions that have most conspicuously free‑ridden on US power: the EU and the UK. Their industries, consumers and energy‑transition assumptions are exposed. Continue reading Trump, Hormuz & the End of the Free Ride
