SYDNEY’S Muslim community leaders last night condemned authorities over the conviction of five men under terrorism laws, describing their sentencing as a “travesty of justice”.

Senior Muslim figures, including 10 imams and 20 community leaders, met privately at Lakemba Mosque before releasing a statement to The Australian late last night demanding police produce the evidence proving the criminal “intentions” of the men.

“Until we see the real evidence, we believe that the reason for the arrests and convictions is that these young men expressed or hold opinions that contradict Australia’s foreign policy towards majority Muslim countries,” the statement said.

Australia not civilized enough for Muslims:

“No civilised society can pretend to know the intention of people. It is a travesty of justice to penalise people on suspected intention.”

In January last year, 4BC Queensland radio broadcaster Michael Smith said he thought it dangerous to allow the burka in certain public places because it had been used as a disguise by criminals. He also said he thought the burka impedes vision in a car. Days later, a listener, Omar Hassan, wrote to 4BC and complained to the Australian Communications and Media Authority that Smith had breached the code by vilifying, inciting hatred and discriminating against Muslims.

Last year, ACMA tossed out the complaint. No matter. Hassan also lodged a complaint with Queensland’s Anti-Discrimination Commission. And the ADC accepted the complaint.

Never mind that countries such as France and Denmark are having robust debates about banning the burka for all sorts of reasons… (T)he purveyors of acceptable thoughts at the ADC now require Smith to attend a three-hour “mediation” session with Hassan.

Kevin Rudd’s boat people policy is collapsing, with Christmas Island now so full that the allegedly “vulnerable” are being moved to the mainland:

A GROUP of asylum seekers has been moved to Melbourne without visas as Christmas Island nears breaking point.


And 94 asylum seekers and crew picked up off Ashmore Reef last Thursday are being held aboard a navy ship until at least Wednesday, while authorities try to free up beds.

As another unauthorised boat was intercepted yesterday, authorities confirmed 20 “vulnerable” asylum seekers were removed from Christmas Island on Friday.

Eight went to the Melbourne Immigration Transit Centre at Broadmeadows and the remaining 12 to Brisbane. They included five unaccompanied minors and five family groups.

“No determination has been made on their cases as yet,” an Immigration Department spokesman said. “They’ve been chosen for transfer because they are vulnerable people.”

French police have closed down a makeshift shelter for illegal migrants Mohammedan invaders in Calais a day after it was opened.

The disused warehouse in the northern port was being used by about 100 migrants, mostly from Afghanistan.

The building was rented by an activist group, which turned it into a camp in defiance of a ban on giving shelter to illegal immigrants in the town.  Calais attracts migrants aiming to get into the UK. In September, a makeshift camp known as “the jungle” was closed.

The move was criticised by human rights groups, who argued that many migrants should be treated like refugees.  BBC

Officials cite ‘respect’ after new Muslim prayer room opened

Administrators at a hospital in Australia have thrown the crosses, crucifixes and Bibles out of their chapel to comply with new rules that followed the construction of a special prayer room for Muslims.

According to a report in the Mosman Daily, the change has been made at the Royal North Shore Hospital in St. Leonards.

The move, according to senior members of the hospital staff quoted by the newspaper, was made to avoid offending Muslims or Hindus who may be at the hospital. Continued>>

“Never in my life have I experienced the sort of reception and the sort of welcome that we got walking down the street to Catani Gardens today, it was just unbelievable,” Mr Overland said…

ASIO and the Australian Federal Police fear a growing number of Melbourne schools are in danger of race-hate and terror attacks – forcing the Rudd Government to ramp up security for students across the state.

The Federal Home Affairs Minister, Brendan O’Connor, will within weeks give $8 million to more than a dozen high-risk Islamic, Jewish and public schools to install CCTV cameras, security gates, higher-grade windows, doors and safety lighting.

(Not that Islamic schools have ever been at risk. However, the infinite wisdom of the KRudd government and the need to be seen as “even handed”  demands a smoke and mirrors approach…./ed)

Eleven schools in Victoria – mostly religious and highly multicultural – have been given extra funding to upgrade security measures after threats.

They include Ilim College in Dallas, Minaret College in Springvale, and Isik College in Eastmeadows. Private Jewish schools including Yeshivah College in St Kilda East, Bialik College in East Hawthorn, Mount Scopus College in Burwood and Leibler Yavneh College in Elsternwick were also identified as high-risk.

A police spokesman refused to say why specific schools were being targeted, or by whom, only denying there were any known terrorist threats against any schools on the list.

It is believed several of the identified Jewish schools were subject to Islamist threats including anti-Semitic phone calls.

Five Islamic schools in NSW and the ACT are among the likely recipients of extra cash this year after the Australian Federation of Islamic Councils raised security concerns.

Islamic leader Ikebal Patel said the Government had recognised a need for protection of vulnerable schools.

“This year we have had a situation where we have had some threats and exposure to possible losses due to lapses in security,” Mr Patel said.
