Muslims quitting regional Victoria due to lack of mosques

Many are abandoning regional centres just weeks after they arrive because there are no mosques within hundreds of kilometres of their new homes.

There are more than 90,000 Muslims in Victoria, and only four mosques in regional areas. There are a further 32 mosques in Melbourne.

About 30 Muslim workers have recently left Warrnambool because the nearest mosque is in Geelong- almost 200km away.

The Islamic Council of Victoria said rural towns would suffer if they didn’t start providing devout Muslims with places of worship.

ICV executive committee member Sherene Hassan said four mosques in regional Victoria was not a large number.

“For devout Muslims a mosque is a central aspect of their lives,” Ms Hassan said.

“If Muslims are leaving towns because of this, then this is affecting these towns economically.”

Ms Hassan said the ICV would support any efforts to build new mosques, but said they must be built in consultation with the local community.

“We would want the wider community to support it, and would urge Muslims to consult as widely as possible,” she said.

Warrnambool Muslim community leader Mohamed Khanyari said about 30 workers he had encouraged to move to the state’s west last year had already returned to Melbourne because the area has no mosque.

Curiously, Jane Metlikovec from the Herald Sun doesn’t mention that  the “Warrnambool Muslim community” is nothing more than a bunch of halal butchers. Why not?

Mr Khanyari said plans to bring more migrant workers to the area would fail if a place of worship was not built soon.

“I am already bringing people here to work, but they just cannot stay, because they are very religious people and they must have somewhere to pray,” Mr Khanyari said.

No they  “must not have somewhere to pray”.  Anyhow, who is bringing these “very religious people” to Australia?

Mr Khanyari said Warrnambool was suffering.

“The people I am bringing here are good, skilled workers, but they simply leave because of the situation,” he said.

“It would be good for us, yes, but also good for the town and tourism.

“There are many Muslim families here and we have many visitors who are disappointed when we tell them there is no mosque.”

Mr Khanyari said he would continue to lobby the local council about building a mosque in Warrnambool.

Of course.

PRIME Minister Kevin Rudd’s ambition to win a United Nations Security Council seat for Australia could turn on its attitude to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, an influential Arab diplomat has warned.

Hesham Youssef, chief adviser to the 22-nation League of Arab States, said Australia’s stance would be scrutinised closely by Arab countries ahead of the UN vote, due in 2012.

But he said any lingering anger in the Middle East over the Howard government’s support for the 2003 invasion of Iraq was unlikely to hurt Australia’s campaign.

”Those who actively supported the direction of going to war were not appreciated in our part of the world … but I think this point is behind us now,” Mr Youssef told The Age in Melbourne yesterday.

”It would be more dependent on the position taken by Australia in the Arab-Israeli conflict more than any other issue.”

In other News:

A BOAT with 181 suspected Afghani asylum seekers was intercepted off the coast of Christmas Island last night… It is the eighth asylum seeker boat to arrive this year.


The Arab League forms a crucial bloc of votes that Australia hopes will support its bid to win one of two temporary spots on the Security Council for 2013-14. Finland and Luxembourg are also vying for a seat.

UN resolutions on the Palestinian-Israeli conflict are regularly among the most controversial.

Australia risked angering the Arab world last year by siding with Israel, the United States and 16 other nations to vote against a report into alleged war crimes during the 2009 Gaza conflict. A total of 114 countries backed the report, while 44 abstained.

But the Rudd government also upset some in Israel by earlier switching Australia’s stance to support UN resolutions broadly demanding Israel give Palestinians fair treatment.

Mr Youssef said it was still too early to say whether the Arab League countries would back Australia’s bid.

Arab teases KRudd  with Carrot & Stick:

Mr Youssef is meeting officials and business leaders in Melbourne, Canberra and Sydney this week as a guest of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. He said the Arab League countries and Australia could greatly expand economic and cultural links.

Hopefully its not the same  Hesham Youssef depicted here….

Aiding and abetting our implacable enemies unites the traitors with the useful idiots of this nation. But why would this jackass get the idea that Tony Abbott should answer to him?

Boat people stand-off ‘Indonesia’s problem’

AUSTRALIA has rejected an Indonesian call for more help to resolve a long-running asylum seeker stand-off at a Javanese port.

More than 240 Sri Lankan asylum seekers have spent more than three months holed up on their rickety cargo boat at the port of Merak, in Java’s west.

Intercepted by Indonesia at Australia’s request in October, the Tamils do not want to come ashore because they fear they will be forced to wait years for resettlement.

They want instead to be offered a rapid resettlement deal like the one Australia used to coax 78 Tamils off the Oceanic Viking last year.  Of course!

Senior Indonesian officials this week indicated Indonesia would ask Australia for more help to resolve the stand-off.

But the Department on Foreign Affairs and Trade today made it clear the stand-off was Indonesia’s problem.

“The disembarkation of the passengers on the Merak vessel is a matter for the Indonesian government to resolve,” a DFAT spokeswoman said.

DFAT confirmed Australia’s People Smuggling Ambassador Peter Woolcott would travel to Jakarta “shortly” but indicated the Merak crisis would not be on the agenda.

“The Ambassador will be holding general discussions with the Indonesian Government about bilateral co-operation on people smuggling issues,” DFAT said.

    Yet more boat people drown – and it’s time to hold the Rudd Government to account:

    A BOAT carrying 40 asylum-seekers that sank 350 nautical miles north-west of the Cocos Island capsized in darkness overnight as a commercial vessel attempted to rescue them.

    The RAAF and Australia’s Royal Flying Doctors Service will today join the search for survivors, withgrave fears now held for more than 20 people unaccounted for after 17 were rescued.

    I’m bloody angry. I warned again and again and again that people were once more dying at sea following Kevin Rudd’s relaxation of our boat people laws, and would continue to do so while those laws were relaxed.

    The response? A wilful refusal to look at the brutal consequences of this display of “compassion”. In fact, when I warned last month that at least 25 boat people had died already this year trying to get here, Deputy Prime Minister Julia Gillard claimed “there is no evidence to support this figure”.

    I recounted and found that in fact at least 42 boat people had died. With these latest suspected drownings, the toll is now 61 dead at least.

    we just recently was told that our children had muslim lectures within their school,i was not informed ,or didnt even sign a permission note for my children to participate in this lecture..it is a public school and we have to even sign permission notes for our children to do scripture,we signed a note for the children to watch aboriginal dancers,even a note to see healthy harold the giraffe that promotes healthy eating,so i cannot work out why we didnt get a permission note,or not even knowing that our children had muslim lectures telling them that,PORK IS DIRTY.and because my children are too young to comprehend the differences between meats.i now have my children turning their noses up at the meats being served to them.im very dissapointed in our australian public school system and maybe the future PORK INDUSTRY might not even be profitable as muslim lecturers are turning our kids against PORK MEAT.im not the only parent at this school that feels like i do.could anyone tell me what if i walked in a muslim school and lectured them on PORK AND HOW TASTY AND YUMMY IT IS without prior consent to the muslim childrens parents??????

    this occured on ramadam week at campbelltown public school,which is an australian public school .it has 299 students and there is no muslim teachers,there is more than id say 30 or so muslim children at the school.my main concern is that when the muslim lectures came to lecturer our children,we as parents didnt even have the oppurnity to sign a note of permission for our children too attend.as some children were too young to comprehend muslim beliefs, a lot of children are not eating meat and asking a lot of questions that i cannot answer…..
