Al-Qaradawi Center for “Moderation”

Al Qaradawi, the “reformer”, the voice of “moderation”: will he reform this?

In an amazing bit of irony, a Qatari government fund is creating the Al-Qaradawi Centre for Islamic Moderation and Renewal, named after leading Sunni scholar and self-proclaimed “Mufti of martyrdom operations” Yousef Al-Qaradawi. claims that the center will direct its “moderation” towards “politicians and economists,” train imams, and show the “huge difference between terrorism and jihad.”

Yet all of these stated goals directly contradict Al-Qaradawi’s statements in support of terrorism, his desire to overthrow capitalism, and his position as a leading member of the Muslim Brotherhood.

Director Hasan Khalifa is a professor of Comparative Religion at Cairo University and a great admirer of Al-Qaradawi. He stated that the organization “would direct its works at politicians and economists to help them promote moderation in their respective areas.”

In the realm of politics, there are numerous examples of Al-Qaradawi’s “moderation.” He has openly permitted the killing of American troops in Iraq and praised the “heroic deeds” from “Hamas, Jihad, Al-Aqsa Brigades, and others.” Reports by prominent London newspaper Al-Sharq Al-Awsat, repeated Israeli claims that Al-Qaradawi was funding “the heart of Hamas,” the Al-Islam Charity, through his Welfare Coalition. He has also pledged to fight the United States if it attacked Iran, stating:

“When America threatened it [Iran], I said I am against America. Iran has the right to possess peaceful nuclear power, and if America fights it, we would stand up against it [America].”

To top it all off, Al-Qaradawi has proclaimed himself the “Mufti of martyrdom operations” and stated:

“I have been affiliated with a group considered by Zionists as their first enemy; it is the Muslim Brotherhood that has provided and still provides martyrs for the cause of Palestine.

An Egyptian man has been charged with illegally circumcising a young girl on Thursday, making him the first person to face the law since Cairo criminalized the controversial practice of female genital mutilation, or FGM.

Ahmed Gad al-Karim, 69, was charged with inflicting injury on an 11-year-old girl after a local hospital notified the police when the young girl was brought in suffering from heavy bleeding following a circumcision.

The Upper Egyptian governorate of Minya, 600 kilometers south of Cairo, was told that the girl’s mother gave Karim 150 Egyptian Pounds ($ 27) to circumcise her daughter,who remains in critical condition.

Karim’s arrest is the first since Egypt passed law number 126 in 2008, which criminalizes FGM due to the physical and psychological damages it inflicts on the victims.

In 2008, the law was met with objections by the Muslim Brotherhood and independent MPs, who argued that female circumcision is part of the Shariah law as it protects a woman’s chastity.

But Dar al-Iftaa, the government institution in charge of issuing religious edicts for contemporary issues, ruled that circumcision is not part of Islam and is a cultural practice.

The good news is that there was an arrest.

The bad news is that it appears Egypt has no interest in enforcing the law, as the only reason there was an arrest in this case – a year after the law passed – is because the poor girl was almost killed.

(AINA) — The Egyptian Government, In a new step in long-term and premeditated process of obliterating Coptic identity and history, has decided to change the name of the Coptic village of Deir Abu Hennis, in the Upper Egyptian province of Mallawi, Minya. The village was founded in the 4th century AD on the grounds of the Monastery of St. Hennis the Short, a much revered Coptic Saint. The new name chosen by the Government is “Valley of Peppermint.”

Battle to compensate terror victims: "holiday insurance don't cover terrorism"

For years UK victims of overseas terror attacks and their families have battled to get compensation.

Now a man whose son was killed in the Sharm al-Sheikh bombings in July 2005 is calling for campaign groups to join together to lobby the government.

Four years ago Trevor Lakin’s life was torn apart when his son was killed in a terrorist attack in Egypt.

Jeremy Lakin, 28, and his girlfriend Annalie Vickers were among 11 Brits killed in the bomb blasts, while they were on holiday in the resort of Sharm al-Sheikh.

Since then Mr Lakin, from south Lincolnshire, has actively campaigned for better treatment of victims of international terrorism.

Currently the UK government does not guarantee compensation for people injured in attacks abroad.

Victims of the 7 July bomb attacks in London received money from the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority. But those hurt outside the UK are not eligible.

It is a situation which angers many, as other countries such as Australia, France and Israel have schemes in place offering financial support for their citizens.

Mr Lakin, 60, says he is not interested in gaining money for his family, but wants to raise awareness of the plight of people affected by terror attacks.

(AINA) – As a result of a rumor that a young Christian Copt hurled a stone towards a mosque, thousands of Muslims congregated and attacked Copts and their properties, leaving several injured and arrested.

The incident, which took place on Wednesday, May 13, 2009,in the area of Saft El-Labn, Giza, resulted in the injury of 14 people from both sides. The police arrested 20 Copts, including 6 women, and 7 Muslims, and security imposed a curfew on the region.

….”Yesterday’s sectarian clashes were brought about by an argument between the relative of a Coptic girl who was sexually harassed by a Muslim youth, and was on a small scale. Unfortunately, Muslim fanatics in the area propagated a rumour that during the melee, the Copts hurled stones towards the Mosque. As a result thousands of Muslims gathered and attacked the Copts living in the area, and destroyed 6 shops including a pharmacy, a supermarket and some vehicles.”

CAIRO, Egypt, May 12 (Compass Direct News) – In the dilapidated office here of three lawyers representing one of Egypt’s “most wanted” Christian converts, the mood was hopeful in spite of a barrage of death threats against them and their client. At a court hearing on May 2, a judge agreed to a request by the convert from Islam to join the two cases he has opened to change his ID card to reflect his new faith. The court set June 13 as the date to rule on Maher Ahmad El-Mo’otahssem Bellah El-Gohary’s case, and lawyer Nabil Ghobreyal said he was hopeful that progress thus far will lead to a favorable ruling. At the same time, El-Gohary’s lawyers termed potentially “catastrophic” for Egyptian human rights a report sent to the judge by the State Council, a consultative body of Egypt’s Administrative Court. Expressing outrage at El-Gohary’s “audacity” to request a change in the religious designation on his ID, the report claims the case is a threat to societal order and violates sharia (Islamic law). “This [report] is bombarding freedom of religion in Egypt,” said lawyer Said Faiz. “They are insisting that the path to Islam is a one-way street. The entire report is based on sharia.”
