WTF is wrong with blowing Somali pirates out of the water?

CRUISE LINER BRITONS HIDE UNDER BUNKS TO SURVIVE PIRATE ATTACK

* Why does this story remind me of Melanie Griffith’s in “Bonfire of theVanities” when she grabs Tom Hanks by the balls and tells him “You know I’m a sucker for a soft dick..?”

TERRIFIED British tourists cowered in their cabins when their cruise liner came under fire from gun-wielding Somali pirates.

Guards on board returned fire but the pirates were only repelled when a group of holidaymakers threw tables and chairs as the men climbed ropes up to the deck. The intruders were made to retreat to their own boats.

Passengers were forced to take refuge under their bunks as the gang used two boats to try to hijack the ship Melody on its voyage 180-miles north of the Seychelles in the Indian Ocean.

Most of the media discussion about piracy in the Gulf of Aden has drifted understandably towards the sensational part of the story: how are the pirates able to roam the ocean? Is paying them ransom a better option than engaging them militarily? Last but not least, will a military intervention against the pirates worsen the situation; will it lead to a massive escalation in Somalia and a Vietnam-like quagmire for many years to come?

Terror for 1,200 Britons as Somali pirates with rocket launchers attack cruise ship

More than 1,200 British holidaymakers on a round-the-world cruise came under a terrifying attack from pirates armed with rocket launchers.

The 715ft-long Balmoral came under fire four times from Somali bandits, a crew member said.

The 43,000-ton cruise ship was forced to zigzag violently to evade its pursuers as the pirates gave chase in two small craft in the notoriously dangerous waters off Somalia.

One crew member said in e-mails to her boyfriend back in Britain that the pirates circled the ship and came within 400 yards of the cruise ship, The Sun reported.

Sudan: Bashir will ‘not cooperate’ with court, says diplomat

Rome, 4 March (AKI) – Sudan’s ambassador to Italy, Alier Deng Ruai Deng, said his country would not cooperate with the International Criminal Court after it issued an arrest warrant for president Omar al-Bashir for alleged war crimes in Darfur on Wednesday. Al-Bashir, the first sitting head of state to be indicted by the court, faces five counts of crimes against humanity, including responsibility for murder, rape and torture, and two counts of war crimes.

“The view of Sudan is very clear. We will not accept such a decision from the ICC. We think it is a politically based decision, not based on legality,” said Deng in an interview with Adnkronos International more from (AKI).

MOGADISHU, Somalia – Somalia’s increasingly brazen pirates are building sprawling stone houses, cruising in luxury cars, marrying beautiful women — even hiring caterers to prepare Western-style food for their hostages.

And in an impoverished country where every public institution has crumbled, they have become heroes in the steamy coastal dens they operate from because they are the only real business in town.

The Ukrainian vessel was heading for the Kenyan port of Mombasa loaded down with rocket-propelled grenades, anti-aircraft guns and 30 Russian T-72 tanks.

“They really hit the jackpot this time,” said a regional arms expert. “There is not much they can do with the tanks, but the RPGs and the Zu-23 anti-aircraft guns will soon find their way into Somalia’s arms markets.

“These are the sort of weapons that fighters in Somalia really like.”
