Smith says monitoring 30 U.K. terrorism plots

LONDON (Reuters) – British police and security agencies are currently monitoring 30 terrorism plots, Home Secretary Jacqui Smith said in extracts of a newspaper interview released on Saturday.

“We now face a threat level that is severe. It’s not getting any less, it’s actually growing,” she said in an interview to be published in Sunday’s News of the World.

“We task the police and the security agencies with protecting us … There are 22,000 individuals they are monitoring. There are 200 networks. There are 30 active plots,” she said.

Prime Minister Gordon Brown’s Labour government is seeking to extend pre-charge detention of terrorism suspects to 42 days from the current 28-day limit.

But Smith faces a tough task steering the controversial provisions through parliament.

The Conservative and Liberal Democrat parties have both said they will vote against extended detention. Labour backbenchers are also threatening to rebel and vote down the clause in the Counter-Terrorism Bill.

“We can’t wait for an attack to succeed and then rush in new powers,” Smith said. “We’ve got to stay ahead.

“Because we now understand the scale of what is being plotted, the police have to step in earlier, which means they need more time to put evidence together.”

  1. This is just the typical crap of a scared left-wing junta trying to stay in power by frightening the electorate – and it won’t work! This UK government has introduced and passed into legislation over 4,000 laws which interfere with the freedoms of the lieges, and has given the right to enter onto our properties, without warrant of the courts, to almost all government departments. Home Secretary Jacqui Smith is known throughout the UK as the Marxist control freak that her past history so richly indicates. She is incapable of bringing an almost self-governing department back under the control of Government and, indeed, has exacerbated the problem by deciding to ignore the will of the electorate in favour of her own under-educated and silly opinions into which hard facts never enter. Hopefully, the current inept government of the UK, Jacqui Smith (and what’s wrong with the good old English spelling ‘Jackie’?), and all the other pseudo-democratic placeholders will be trounced out of office at the next election. Not that we will be any better served by the other lot, for their rational is solely about money and has no claim on the history of the UK or its sprituality! Pity us, for we are doomed by the stupid who govern us to fail.

  2. Ms. Smith is a joke. She said that we should call Muslim terrorists anti-Islam so that Muslims would understand that the infidels did not blame Islam which everyone knows is a religion of peace. Community cohesion and all that multiculturalism propaganda that is aiding the destruction of Britain. Another enemy of the West.
