Fortuyn killed ‘to protect Muslims’

A Left-wing activist confessed in court yesterday to Holland’s first political assassination in 400 years, claiming that he shot Pim Fortuyn to defend Dutch Muslims from persecution. Telegraph UK

Mohammed Rasheed, aka Nicky Reilly, is said to be a half-wit — not a half-wit in the Garaudy or Galloway or Chomsky sense, each quite capable of low cunning, but a half-wit in the literal sense. And it is a quite plausible claim. For Muslim “activists” (fine word, activists — its awfulness reflecting the awfulness of all “activists”) are good at identifying, for the purposes of Da’wa, target populations of the economically and psychically marginal.

The explosive Mr. Reilly of Exeter turns out, unsurprisingly, to be a man with a history of mental illness, who was “preyed upon and radicalised” by Muslims.

This description fits perfectly the Dutchman Volkert van der Graaf, a demented man and “animal-rights activist” whose “concern for the most vulnerable members of society” led him to murder Pim Fortuyn — via Muslims who probably carefully explained to him that next to of course animals it was they, Muslims, who best fit that definition, they who were most vulnerable. And they most likely told him that it was bad old Pim Fortuyn who was out to get them and wouldn’t it be nice, wouldn’t it be right, if some brave protector of the “most vulnerable” were to come to their aid by shooting Pim Fortuyn dead so he wouldn’t any longer be able to threaten those “most vulnerable” and helpless Muslims?

And that is exactly what Volkert van der Graaf did.

Canadian Guantanamo detainee wins court battle

A Canadian detainee at Guantanamo Bay has won the right to use interrogation transcripts to help him prepare for his trial before a military commission.

Omar Khadr is accused of murdering an American soldier in Afghanistan in 2002.

In a unanimous ruling, the Canadian High Court said Khadr has a constitutional right to transcripts of interviews that Canadian foreign affairs and security agents conducted with him during his detention at Guantanamo Bay.

But the court rejected demands for additional documents that Canadian authorities may have dealing with other parts of the case.

The court ruled that information can be withheld because of national security.

Defence lawyers say the ruling falls far short of what they had hoped for, but they say it confirms that Guantanamo Bay is contrary to US domestic laws and violates obligations to protect fundamental human rights.

Khadr was 15 at the time of his capture in Afghanistan.

PALO ALTO, California – Hezbollah has been left weakened by the recent turmoil in Lebanon and could pay the price in next year’s elections, US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and her British counterpart said on Thursday.

“Hezbollah has lost something very important which is any argument that it is somehow a resistance movement on behalf of the Lebanese people,” Rice told journalists aboard her plane as she and British Foreign Secretary David Miliband headed to Palo Alto, California.

“Yes, I think they have been hurt in the long term.”

The two top diplomats spoke a day after Hezbollah won concessions in a deal with the government in Lebanon.

Under the agreement signed in Doha, the Hezbollah-led opposition secured veto power in the new government after having seized large swathes of west Beirut from their rivals in sectarian fighting.

“The context was set by an unacceptable show of force on the streets and that did create an illusion, I think, in the first few days, of Hezbollah’s strength,” Miliband said.

“I think what struck us in the subsequent days is that the reaction of the Lebanese has been very negative about that, because, as Condi said, the guns of Hezbollah were turned on their own people,” he said.

“And I think the long term consequences of that are actually potentially going to strengthen the forces of moderation and democracy in Lebanon.”

Japan says Muslim offense at cartoon ‘regrettable’

Tokyo: The government said in a statement Friday that it is ‘‘regrettable’’ that a section of a Japanese cartoon has sparked an outcry in the Muslim world and stressed the need to foster understanding to prevent similar incidents in the future. ‘‘While it resulted from carelessness, the Japanese government considers it regrettable that Muslims’ feelings were hurt by the content of some of the cartoon,’’ Foreign Ministry Press Secretary Kazuo Kodama said. ‘‘In any case, we think it is important to prevent a recurrence by fostering understanding and respect for other religions and cultures.’’

“Accept polygamy and be patient with your husband”

A Malaysian MP told parliament that there would be fewer marital problems and a lower divorce rate if Muslim women were taught to accept polygamy, news reports said today.

Ibrahim Ali, an independent parliamentarian, proposed moves to address the issue in response to complaints that women were always blamed for marital issues.

“Such problems happen because women cannot accept polygamy. From a preventive point of view, what about doing a big campaign so that women can accept polygamy?” Ibrahim was quoted saying in the Star daily.

The ethnic Malay Muslim lawmaker said women who are pregnant or who have “problems” when they hit their 50s do not understand that men still want to “have fun”.

* This is an interesting admission, because we are usually told that ‘men are the protectors of women’- and that its only for this ‘protection’ that women are to be kept under black cloth in the house. Now this guy spills the beans and says ‘for fun’- good one, that!

Fuziah Salleh, an opposition politician, had earlier questioned the qualifications of Islamic sharia court counsellors as she had received complaints from women that they were forced to take the blame for most marital problems.

“They are not counselled but given ‘advice’. And every time, they are told that the woman is to be blamed. If it is a family problem, they must be patient. If they are beaten up, they must also be patient,” she said.

Muslim men in Malaysia are allowed up to four wives. Activists and women’s groups say polygamy is cruel and has deviated from its original purpose in Islam, which was to protect widows and orphans.

Islam is the official religion of Malaysia, where more than 60 per cent of its 27 million people are Muslim Malays. Polygamy is illegal for non-Muslims.
