Ayaan Hirsi Ali’s enlightening op-ed, “‘South Park’ and the Informal Fatwa,” (April 28) discusses how a tenet of Islam encourages Muslims to take it upon themselves, as individuals, to punish those who somehow commit “wrong.” This raises another basic issue surrounding Islam: That it is an honor-based culture that places enormous importance on the public display of respect. This leads to a host of actions that seem barbaric to others; not only may—or must—one kill another person who has “disrespected” Muhammad, but fathers and husbands may also slay their daughters and wives if they have somehow dishonored the family, perhaps for something as trivial as talking in public to an unrelated male or dressing immodestly. This honor-based culture similar fosters suicide bombers who indiscriminately murder innocent people to gain the glorified status of martyr and instant entry into paradise.
For those of us who see Islam from the outside, these brutal, merciless and death-extolling tenets engender not respect but horror and disgust. It is ironic that the fundamentalist followers of an ideology that seeks respect with such determination, manage to achieve precisely the opposite.

LUCKNOW: Darul Uloom Deoband, the self-appointed guardian for Indian Muslims, in a Talibanesque fatwa that reeked of tribal patriarchy, has decreed that it is “haram” and illegal according to the Sharia for a family to accept a woman’s earnings. Clerics at the largest Sunni Muslim seminary after Cairo’s Al-Azhar said the decree flowed from the fact that the Sharia prohibited proximity of men and women in the workplace.
“It is unlawful (under the Sharia law) for Muslim women to work in the government or private sector where men and women work together and women have to talk with men frankly and without a veil,” said the fatwa issued by a bench of three clerics. The decree was issued over the weekend, but became public late on Monday, seminary sources said….
The fatwa, however, drew flak among other clerics.
“Men and women in Sharia are entitled to equal rights. If men follow the Sharia, there is no reason why women can’t work with them,” said Rasheed, the Naib Imam of Lucknow’s main Eidgah Mosque in Aishbagh.
Mufti Maulana Khalid Rasheed of Darul Ifta Firangi Meheli — another radical Islamic body which also issues fatwas — criticized the Deoband fatwa as a retrograde restriction on Muslim women.

NEW YORK – In her undergraduate thesis at Princeton, President Obama’s nominee for the Supreme Court, Elena Kagan, lamented the decline of socialism in the country as “sad” for those who still hope to “change America.”
Titled “To the Final Conflict: Socialism in New YorkCity, 1900-1933,” Kagan opined that infighting caused the decline of the early socialist movement. She asked why the “greatness” of socialism was not reemerging as a major political force.

THE HAGUE, 30/06/09 – Most Muslims in the Netherlands see Geert Wilders as a threat, but nearly one in five share his criticisms of Islam partly or in full, according to a survey by TV programme Netwerk.
Three-quarters of the Muslims consider it a threat if Wilders were to enter government. Nonetheless, one-third of them find it logical for a portion of the Dutch to vote for him. Eighteen percent of the Muslims agree with the Party for Freedom (PVV) leader on a number of points. On the other hand, 22 percent feel hatred towards Wilders.
On the question of how the Muslim community should deal with Wilders’ rising popularity, there are divergent thoughts. Most support is for ignoring him (40 percent), closely followed by ‘enter into the discussion’ (35 percent). Next come ‘let a tough counter-voice be heard’ (25 percent) and ‘tackle problems within the Muslim community’ (23 percent).
Nearly three-quarters of the Muslims have the feeling that the ‘ordinary’ Dutch have judged them more negatively in recent years than in the past. By executive order, President Barack Obama has ordered the expenditure of $20.3 million in “migration assistance” to the Palestinian refugees and “conflict victims” in Gaza .
The “presidential determination,” which allows hundreds of thousands of Palestinians with ties to Hamas to resettle in the United States , was signed and appears in the Federal Register.
Few on Capitol Hill, or in the media, took note that the order provides a free ticket replete with housing and food allowances to individuals who have displayed their overwhelming support to the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) in the parliamentary election of January 2006.
Now we learn that he is allowing thousands of Palestinian refuges to move to, and live in, the US at American taxpayer expense.
These important, and insightful, issues are being “lost” in the blinding bail-outs and “stimulation” packages.

Vilks has faced numerous threats over his controversial drawing of Muhammad with a dog’s body, but Tuesday’s incident was the first time he has been physically assaulted.
Earlier this year U.S. investigators said Vilks was the target of an alleged murder plot involving Colleen LaRose, an American woman who dubbed herself “Jihad Jane,” and who now faces life in prison. She had pleaded not guilty…
Swedish news agency TT said police detained two people during the commotion… University officials said there had been a peaceful demonstration by Muslims outside the university before Vilks started to speak, and that about 250 people attended his lecture.
Everything about the incident screams a warning about the integration of Muslims in a Western country: the violence, the fanatical frenzy, the intolerance, the youth of these Islamic fascists, the trivial provocation and the need for so many police to protect a man’s fundamental right to speak.

She adds, “If I get the opportunity.” Dressed in a black burqa from head to toe and uttering death threat after death threat, the woman — a wife and mother — says she is defending her religion and her prophet if she manages to kill Vilks. Amatullah has already been fined for issuing death threats. Still, she claims she will never stop taunting him.

Allah says, “Those who harm Allah and His Messenger, Allah has cursed them in this world and in the Next, and has prepared for them a humiliating punishment.” (33:57). He said something similar about those who kill the believers. Part of the curse on them in this world is that they are killed. Allah says, “Cursed they will be. AFPÂ – France is on course to become the second European country after Belgium to declare the face-covering veil illegal in public places, reviving the debate on Islam’s place in Europe.
“All of France will say ‘non’ to the full veil and will ask that this practice be prohibited on the territory of the republic,” speaker Bernard Accoyer told reporters.
Debate on the burqa ban has prompted warnings that it could provoke community tension in a country that is home to biggest Muslim minority, which estimated at between five and six million.
Supporters of the ban argue they are not attacking religious freedoms but rather upholding women’s rights, with one prominent group saying the new law will liberate young Muslim girls growing up in France.
