Andreas Scheuer, the General Secretary of Germany’s Christian Christian Social Union Party (CSU) has called on the European Union to suspend Turkey’s application to join the bloc following Turkish prime minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan being elected as president.
“The Turkey of Erdogan has no place in Europe,” Scheuer was quoted in the Hannover Allgemeine Zeitung, expressing significant criticism of Erdogan’s election while calling on his government to reconsider its relationship with Turkey.

Erdogan’s attacks against Israel, which according to Turks and outsiders have reawakened anti-Semitic feelings in the country, were par for the course. His campaign was marked by insults against religious minorities, disparaging remarks on Turks with foreign ancestry and comments degrading women.
