Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has urged Australians not to let alleged terrorists succeed in frightening and dividing the nation, after Victoria Police and Australian Federal Police foiled a proposed Christmas Day terrorist attack.

“It has been thwarted. Thwarting the attack, an Islamist terrorist plot inspired by Daesh or ISIL… speaks volumes for the professionalism of our police agencies,” Mr Turnbull said at a press conference in Sydney.

“What these criminals seek to do is kill. But also, to frighten us and to make us abandon our Australian way of life. We will not let them succeed.

“We will continue to go about our daily lives as we always have.”

The prime minister’s message comes after heavily armed police raided homes across Melbourne’s north-west overnight and this morning, arresting seven people who allegedly planned an attack on Flinders Street Station and Federation Square on Christmas Day.

Chief Commissioner Graham Ashton said police had been watching the alleged plotters for some time, and believed they were preparing a multi-mode attack.

“We believe there was an intention to attack  on Christmas Day.”

He said police believed the alleged attack being planned was going to involve “the use of explosives” and possibly knives and a firearm.

BERLIN — Anis Amri, a Tunisian man who turned 24 on Thursday, is the chief suspect in a Europe-wide investigation into Germany’s worst terrorist attack in decades. His fingerprints and identity document were found inside a tractor-trailer that plowed into a Christmas market in Berlin on Monday, killing 12 people and injuring about 50 more. The Britain-bound child asylum seekers were apparently “deeply unhappy and frustrated” after being told their claims were rejected by the Home Office.

Police arrested one of the minors, a 14-year-old, amid claims he was the one to have incited the unprovoked attack, according to French daily France Bleu.

The UN staffers – two women – were visiting a migrant reception centre near the southern city of Perpignan when they were attacked.

Local prefecture officials, however, say that the attack was nothing but a “huge misunderstanding” and had “nothing to do with” the UK-bound minors’ failed asylum bid.

The Tunisian asylum seeker on the run from police across Europe left his fingerprints on the steering wheel of the lorry used to murder 12 people at a Berlin Christmas market, it was revealed today.

Anis Amri, 24, also left fingerprints on the door and his wallet under the driver’s seat in the hijacked truck before it sent people flying like pins in Breitscheidplatz on Monday night.

Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere said there is a ‘high probability’ that the chief suspect is ‘really the perpetrator’.

He said: ‘In the cab fingerprints were found and there is additional evidence that support this’, adding: ‘It is all the more important that the search is successful as soon as possible.’

Angela Merkel stood next to him as he made the announcement and said she was confident Amri would be arrested ‘soon’ – despite police and security services bungling the initial investigation.

The Chancellor added she was ‘proud of the calm response’ to the Berlin attack.

WASHINGTON — President-elect Donald J. Trump seemed to suggest on Wednesday that the deadly truck attack on a Christmas market in Berlin vindicated his proposal during the presidential campaign to bar Muslims from entering the United States.

“You know my plans,” Mr. Trump said to reporters who asked whether the attack on Monday, in which a Tunisian is being sought, would cause him to re-evaluate his proposals to create a Muslim registry or to stop Muslim immigration to the United States. “All along, I’ve been proven to be right. Just six days before Christmas, a man drove a semi-truck into a crowded Christmas market in Berlin’s historic downtown. Twelve people died and dozens are injured. While Germany was victim to three smaller-scale terrorist attacks over the summer, this is the first large-scale attack that’s been successfully executed.

ISIS claimed responsibility, referring to the attacker(s) as a “soldier of the Islamic State,” as they often do when an ISIS sympathizer carries out an attack in the West. But this time something is different. Not only did the attacker not die in the aftermath, he’s nowhere to be found.

The killer managed to escape. However, in the truck the police found identity papers belonging to Anis A., a Tunisian who came to Germany as an asylum seeker in 2015.

Prosecutors say he is a 24-year-old Tunisian national, who should be considered “armed and dangerous.”

Three German newspapers are reporting that police are searching for Amri in the North Rhine-Westphalia district near Cologne, south-west of the capital Berlin.

According to the reports, documents from Germany’s asylum seeker office were found in the truck which was deliberately driven into a crowd at the Christmas market at the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church at Breitscheidplatz, near the Berlin Zoo, killing 12 people and injured 48 others.

German Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere confirmed that authorities have identified a new suspect.

“There is a new suspect we are searching for – he is a suspect but not necessarily the assailant,” he told reporters.

Der Speigel reports that Amri regularly changed his place of residence and his identity. In Berlin he was captured as Ahmad Z or Mohammed H from Egypt. On another occasion, he said he was from Lebanon.

German media said that he had been in contact with a “network of leading Islamist ideologists.”

Saudi Arabia and Gulf states ‘support Islamic extremism in Germany,’ intelligence report finds

Saudi Arabia’s ambassador to Germany denies his government funds extremist groups Islam.

Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Qatar are supporting extremist Islamic groups in Germany, according to a leaked intelligence report.

A brief seen by the Süddeutsche Zeitung and broadcasters NDR and WDR raised concern over a reported increase in support for fundamentalist Salafism in Germany, warning that the ideology already has 10,000 followers and is growing.

The report, by Germany’s BfV domestic intelligence agency and Federal Intelligence Service (BND) reportedly accused Gulf groups of funding mosques, religious schools, hardline preachers and conversion or “dawah” groups to spread the ideology.

Missionary movements were part of a “long-running strategy to exert influence” by the three states, it found, naming the Saudi Muslim World League, Sheikh Eid Bin Mohammad al-Thani Charitable Association and Kuwaiti Revival of Islamic Heritage Society (RIHS), which has been banned by the US and Russia for allegedly supporting al-Qaeda.
