In Italy, there have been mobs out in force in eighty cities up and down the Boot, and especially in Milan, in Rome, in Venice, in Turin, in Naples, chanting their anti-Israel and antisemitic slogans, smashing state property, including train and subway stations, and attacking police. The violence of these thugs now has gone far beyond their supposed outrage at the colonial-settler ethnic-cleansing genocidal state of Israel.

The proximate cause of their violence was the refusal of Giorgia Meloni’s government to follow in the craven footsteps of France, Canada, Australia, and the U.K. by recognizing a nonexistent “state of Palestine.”

In these crowds there were deep-dyed antisemites, and people fueled by an anti-Israel animus so great that it has metamorphosed into antisemitism, but there were also many in these mobs who just wanted to have fun, as the spoiled young nihilists of the Western world, and what could be more fun than destroying private and public property and bashing the police as they tried manfully to keep order, so that dozens of the “forces of order”  had to be treated in hospitals?

Far-left Antifa radicals and anti-Israel demonstrators erupted into violence in Milan on Monday after Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni refused to follow fellow European nations in recognising Palestine as a state.

Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi said that pro-Gaza protesters “deliberately” attacked police in Milan, leaving around 60 officers injured, Italian wire service ANSA reported.

Piantedosi said that “numerous troublemakers” attempted to exploit public sympathy over the Middle East war to  “commit the usual acts of pure and simple violence.”

The local Corriere della Sera newspaper said that agitators attacked police with street cobblestones, glass bottles, garbage cans, bicycles, and stones. Police attempted to disperse the mobs with teargas, however, the Milanese daily said that it only “fed the anger” of the crowds, who reportedly sang “it will be Intifada here too”. In total, around 15,000 were present in Milan….

The “intifada” those mobs invoked was not just about a “rising up” against Israel; it was a threat of mass violence by nihilists. If Israel were to disappear tomorrow, these people would still be out on the streets, still attacking police and smashing whatever they could. The protest against Israel is merely, for so many in these crowds,  a pretext for mob violence. This is part of the widespread collapse of authority in the Western world.

These rioters are simply enjoying themselves in a Sorelian sense: violence for its own sake. They can claim to be standing up for the people of Gaza, but very few of them really give a damn about the people of Gaza. Gaza is a pretext. These are people who with passionate intensity want to smash the state, to pull down authority, so that “mere anarchy is loosed upon the world.”
