Jihad Comes to Wall Street

“Sharia finance” does exactly what it promises, financing the spread of sharia — and terror.

By Alex Alexiev

If you’ve seen Geert Wilders’s film Fitna, you may not have noticed a single headline amongst all the bombings, beheadings, and earnest expressions of Islam’s eventual world domination: Halal-fund: investments for Muslims. But the investment vehicles referenced are an essential part of radical Islam’s efforts to insinuate itself into Western societies in order to destroy them from within. And Wall Street, barely out of the woods from its disastrous run-in with sub-prime mortgages — and having lost one of its historic investment houses, Bear Stearns, in the process — is now chasing the very kind of “sharia finance” against which Wilders’s movie warns, a business line that may eventually wind up being even more calamitous than the subprime-mortgage fiasco.

For the growing army of its acolytes, who salivate at the prospect of tens of billions of dollars in transaction fees from the burgeoning industry, sharia-compliant finance is seen as little more than a cuddly Islamic version of socially conscious investment — with ethical strictures forbidding usury and sin industries, and emphasizing charity. Indeed, a conference on the subject last Fall co-sponsored by the Wall Street Journal was titled just that: “Islamic Ethical Investment.” According to this rosy interpretation, sharia finance is a windfall for capital markets — allowing Wall Street to skim some foam off the ocean of petrodollar liquidity in the Middle East, and put it to good use.

Sowdi prince Alwaleed gives Cambridge University £8m for Islamic studies centre

images6.jpeg

Telegraph UK/ thanks to John

* Just wondering: what exactly will this ‘Islamic Studies Centre’ do to advance humanity?

* Uh, just remembered: only Muslims are human, so here we go again:

Cambridge University has been given £8 million by a Saudi Arabian prince to establish an Islamic studies centre.

Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal hit the headlines in 2001 when his offer of cash for the victims of the September 11 attacks in New York was turned down after he criticised American foreign policy. New York’s then mayor, Rudolph Giuliani, rejected a £6.6 million donation when the businessman issued a statement that America had to adopt a “more balanced stance” on Palestine. The row belies the prince’s influence in America, however.

Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal,
ranked in the top 20 richest men in the world, with a fortune of about £10 billion, has donated the cash to the university to fund a centre in his name for the study of the role of Islam in the Middle East and globally.

A renowned philanthropist, the prince has made two donations of £10 million to establish Islamic studies centres at Harvard University, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and Georgetown, in Washington. He also gave £10 million to fund an Islamic art wing at the Louvre Museum in Paris.

Arab News: 'Jihad Terror is just an Islamic PR Problem'

UK Plotters Made Martyrdom Videos

Mushtak Parker, Arab News

LONDON, 5 April 2008 — An eight-member gang of British Muslims, accused among other things of plotting to blow up passenger planes mid-air en route to destinations in the United States and Canada, compiled a target list of “limitless ambition” and recorded chilling martyrdom videos warning of a reign of terror attacks against Britons and Jews, in revenge for their actions as accomplices of America, a court in London heard yesterday.

Unfortunately, the trial once again catapulted the specter of so-called “Islamist terrorism” to the front pages of British newspapers and TV and radio bulletins. “Suicide Gang’s Terror War Without Limit” — the headline in last night’s London Evening Standard — was one of the more sober ones.

In the dock at Woolwich Crown Court are: Abdullah Ahmed Ali (also known as Ahmed Ali Khan), 27, of Walthamstow; Assad Sarwar, 24, of High Wycombe; Tanvir Hussain, 27, of Leyton; Mohammed Gulzar, 26, of Barking; Ibrahim Savant, 27, of Stoke Newington; Arafat Waheed Khan, 26, of Walthamstow; Waheed Zaman, 23, of Walthamstow; and Umar Islam (formerly Brian Young), 29, of Plaistow. All of the men are British born and bred.

British Muslims Wanted to Take Families on Suicide Missions

bombersislam.jpg

Members of a British Muslim terrorist cell discussed taking their wives and children on suicide missions to blow up transatlantic jets, a jury heard yesterday.
The ringleader, Abdulla Ahmed Ali, was bugged by police talking about whether to bring his baby son but said his wife “would not agree to it”.

Umar Islam, however, said his wife might join the plot if it were a “significant operation”.

Six of the eight-strong gang each made “chilling” suicide videos expressing the desire to wreak “death and destruction” against the West and “Kuffar”, or non-believers.

They were intended to serve as taunts from beyond the grave if their horrifying plot had succeeded, it was claimed.

Same question as always: have members of Parti Islam se-Malaysia (PAS) ever extremely condemned Osama bin Laden and the global jihad movement? Have members of Parti Islam se-Malaysia (PAS) ever extremely condemned the violence and supremacism on the part of Muslims, as depicted in Wilders’s film? Have members of Parti Islam se-Malaysia (PAS) ever even marginally condemned these things?

What do you think?

Still, the riots and violence that Europe and the world was so afraid would come in the film’s wake has not come. That could change any day, of course, but its absence may indicate that at this point the emphasis from the OIC and other Islamic entities is on obtaining actual restrictions on freedom of speech in the West, not on further demonstrations of what will happen if freedom of speech is not restricted.

Vote on Freedom of Expression marks the end of Universal Human Rights

freedom-of-expression-go-to-hell.jpg
A press release from the International Humanist and Ethical Union:

Proponents of free speech at the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) have accused Islamic countries of “hijacking” a resolution intended to renew the mandate of the special rapporteur on freedom of expression and turning it into an order to report on defamation of religion.
In the words of the Canadian delegation: “instead of promoting freedom of expression the Special Rapporteur would be policing its exercise”.

The amended resolution was adopted on Friday in Geneva by 32 votes in favour (mainly Islamic states with support from China, Cuba and Russia). There were no votes against, but 15 abstentions.

Roy Brown, spokesman at the UNCHR in Geneva for the International Humanist and Ethical Union, commented: “Canada’s position was echoed by several delegations, who objected to the change of focus from protecting to limiting freedom of expression. More than 20 of the original 53 co-sponsors of the resolution withdrew their sponsorship. These included the European Union and the United Kingdom (speaking for Australia and the United States), India, Switzerland, Brazil, Bolivia and Guatemala.”

“Freedom of expression is most important for those who live under the tyranny of Islamic law. This was highlighted by a courageous group of 21 NGOs from the Islamic States who issued a statement appealing to delegations not to support the amendment.”

Hesham Islam, Influential Muslim in Defense Department cleared of any wrongdoing

The Hesham Islam/Stephen Couglin affair

* An agent of Islam in the state department gets his official blessing as an Islamic mole. The mind boggles. People who are sworn  to protect us are working for Islamintern:

An update on the Stephen Couglin imbroglio: “Islam cleared,” from Bill Gertz’s Inside the Ring in the Washington Times

Infiltration

Hesham Islam cleared

Deputy Defense Secretary Gordon England cleared his special assistant of any wrongdoing related to a run-in with former Joint Staff analyst Stephen Coughlin, and amid questions about the Muslim aide’s background.

“The deputy secretary’s office has thoroughly reviewed the issues of concern raised by a few members of Congress and the media and has concluded there is no reason to question Cmdr. Hesham Islam’s credibility or his allegiance to his country,” Pentagon press secretary Geoff Morrell told Inside the Ring.

Mr. Islam, a retired Navy commander, came under criticism after a meeting last fall with Mr. Coughlin, a leading specialist on the relationship between Islamic law and terrorism, when Mr. Islam told associates that Mr. Coughlin was a “Christian zealot with a pen” because of his hard-line views on the ties between extremism and Islam.

Additionally, journalist Claudia Rosett wrote a National Review Online article questioning Mr. Islam’s official biography that had been posted on the official Pentagon Web site and was removed after her article ran.

Miss Rosett noted that Mr. Islam claimed to be in Cairo when it was bombed by Israel in 1967, but there are no records of bombing the Egyptian capital, only the airport near Cairo.

Mr. Islam also claimed to have been on board a freighter sunk by an Iranian torpedo in the Persian Gulf, but that could not be verified.

Investigators determined there are some things that are “unknowable” about Mr. Islam’s background.

Some defense security officials said the discrepancies raise concerns because Mr. Islam holds a security clearance.

Mr. England’s investigators also denied that Mr. Islam or Mr. England got Mr. Coughlin fired from the contractor position as a Joint Staff analyst, which happened after the contentious meeting between Mr. Islam and the analyst. Mr. Coughlin left the Joint Staff last month and is working for the Office of the Secretary of Defense shop for special operations and low-intensity conflict.

Mr. Morrell said Mr. Islam has assisted Mr. England for the past three years and is “a valuable adviser” who helps with Mr. England’s contacts with foreign officials.

Including members of the Muslim Brotherhood.

Radical Islam taking  over Europe & West

Update:

March 10, 2009

Stop the presses! Turks ignore new proof of Armenian genocide!

One constant of Islamic polemic against the West is that Muslim spokesmen never, ever acknowledge any wrongdoing by Muslims. It is always the fault of the non-Muslim party, always someone else’s responsibility. This tendency manifests itself on a large scale in the ongoing Turkish denial of the Armenian genocide. Mention it, and either the Turks are irked, or — in this case — mum.

“A devastating document is met with silence in Turkey,” by Sabrina Tavernise in the IHT, March 9: JW

ISTANBUL: For Turkey, the number should have been a bombshell.According to a long-hidden document that belonged to the interior minister of the Ottoman Empire, 972,000 Ottoman Armenians disappeared from official population records from 1915 through 1916.

In Turkey, any discussion of what happened to the Ottoman Armenians can bring a storm of public outrage. But since its publication in a book in January, the number – and its Ottoman source – has gone virtually unmentioned. Newspapers hardly wrote about it. Television shows have not discussed it.

“Nothing,” said Murat Bardakci, the Turkish author and columnist who compiled the book.

The silence can mean only one thing, he said: “My numbers are too high for ordinary people. Maybe people aren’t ready to talk about it yet.”

For generations, most Turks knew nothing of the details of the Armenian genocide from 1915 to 1918, when more than a million Armenians were killed as the Ottoman Turk government purged the population.

Turkey locked the ugliest parts of its past out of sight, Soviet-style, keeping any mention of the events out of schoolbooks and official narratives in an aggressive campaign of forgetting.

But in the past 10 years, as civil society has flourished here, some parts of Turkish society are now openly questioning the state’s version of events. In December, a group of intellectuals circulated a petition that apologized for the denial of the massacres. Some 29,000 people have signed it.

With his book, “The Remaining Documents of Talat Pasha,” Bardakci (pronounced bard-AK-chuh) has become, rather unwillingly, part of this ferment. The book is a collection of documents and records that once belonged to Mehmed Talat, known as Talat Pasha, the primary architect of the Armenian deportations.

The documents, given to Bardakci by Talat’s widow, Hayriye, before she died in 1983, include lists of population figures. Before 1915, 1,256,000 Armenians lived in the Ottoman Empire, according to the documents. The number plunged to 284,157 two years later, Bardakci said.

To the untrained ear, it is simply a sad statistic. But anyone familiar with the issue knows the numbers are in fierce dispute.

Turkey has never acknowledged a specific number of deportees or deaths. On Sunday, the Turkish foreign minister, Ali Babacan, warned that President Barack Obama might set back relations if he recognized the massacre of Armenians as genocide ahead of his visit to Turkey next month….

The West Stands Idly By While the UN's Human Rights Council Votes Out Freedom of Expression

The West stands by idly as its foundations are rent asunder.

 * Caroline Glick in the JP

Last Friday the UN’s Human Rights Council took a direct swipe at freedom of expression. In a 32-0 vote, the council instructed its “expert on freedom of expression” to report to the council on all instances in which individuals “abuse” their freedom of speech by giving expression to racial or religious bias.

The measure was proposed by paragons of freedom Egypt and Pakistan. It was supported by all Arab, Muslim and African countries – founts of liberty one and all. European states abstained.

The US, which is not a member of the Human Rights Council, tried to oppose the measure. In a speech before the council, US Ambassador to the UN in Geneva Warren Tichenor warned that the resolution’s purpose is to undermine freedom of expression because it imposes “restrictions on individuals rather than emphasiz[ing] the duty and responsibility of governments to guarantee, uphold, promote and protect human rights.”

By seeking to criminalize free speech, the resolution stands in breach of the UN’s Declaration of Human Rights. Article 19 of that document states explicitly: “Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers.”

The Europeans’ decision to abstain rather than oppose the measure seems, at first glance, rather surprising. Given that the EU member states are among the UN’s most emphatic champions, it would have seemed normal for them to have opposed a resolution that undermines one of the UN’s foundational documents, and indeed, one of the most basic tenets of Western civilization.

But then again, given the EU’s stands in recent years against freedom of expression, there really is nothing to be surprised about. The EU’s current bow to intellectual thuggery is of course found in its response to the Internet release of Dutch parliamentarian Geert Wilders’ film Fitna.

The EU has gone out of its way to attack Wilders for daring to exercise his freedom of expression. The EU’s presidency released a statement condemning the film for “inflaming hatred.” Dutch Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende issued statements claiming that the film “serves no other purpose than to cause offense.”

Then, too, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon blasted the film as “offensively anti-Islamic.”

These statements follow the EU’s quest to restrict freedom of speech following the 2005 publication of cartoons of Muhammed in Denmark’s Jyllands Posten newspaper. They also come against the backdrop of the systematic silencing of anti-jihadist intellectuals throughout the continent. These intellectuals, such as Peter Redeker in France and Paul Cliteur in the Netherlands, are threatened into silence by European jihadists. And the governments of Europe either do nothing to defend the threatened thinkers or justify the intellectual blackmailers by sympathizing with their anger.

IT IS axiomatic that freedom of expression is the foundation of human freedom and progress. When people are not allowed to express themselves freely, there can be no debate or inquiry. It is only due to free debate and inquiry that humanity has progressed from the Dark Age to the Digital Age. This is why the first act of every would-be tyrant is to take control of the marketplace of ideas.

Yet today, the nations of Europe and indeed much of the Western world, either sit idly by and do nothing to defend that freedom or collaborate with unfree and often tyrannical Islamic states and terrorists in silencing debate and stifling dissent.

Prison Jihad

Wyoming lawsuit: Prison mealtime violates Muslim inmates’ freedom of religion

Spencer:

They cannot bend to prison practice (although actually there are provisions in Islamic law that would allow them to adapt). Rather, the prison has to bend to them. This is all part of the larger stealth jihad initiative in the U.S., about which I am writing a book: the attempt to get the U.S. to become accustomed to accommodating Sharia — a road that will lead either to the end of that accommodation, or else to America’s becoming a Sharia state. But there is no stopping point within Sharia itself beyond which the demands will not advance.

“Wyo. Lawsuit Alleges Prison Mealtime Violates Muslim Inmates’ Freedom of Religion,” from AP via JW

The ACLU filed the lawsuit in U.S. District Court on behalf of Joseph Miller and Hurie Purdiman Jr., two inmates serving time at the penitentiary in Rawlins.

At issue is an alleged “20-minute rule” requiring inmates to eat their meals within 20 minutes after the food is delivered to a cell or common dining area, the lawsuit said. The lawsuit seeks for the inmates to be exempted from the rule because it forces them to choose between eating and practicing their religion.

* Hugh Fitzgerald comments:

Of course, this all begs the question: is Islam a religion in the sense in which the Framers understood that word, and as we today in the West understand that word? It is much more than a religion. It is a politics. It is a geopolitics. It is a program for, and justification of, world conquest for Islam and for Muslims. That can be found, quite easily, in the texts. Those who keep refusing to examine those texts, or examining the totalitrian nature of Islam, with its system of Total Regulation, and its justification for the mistreatment of all Unbelievers, or Infidels, needs to be understood by those in Congress and by judges, including of course those on the Supreme Court.

UK: Misunderstanders of Islam “exploiting growing prison gang culture”

Convicted Islamist terrorists are exploiting the growing gang culture in top security jails, fuelling fears that they are trying to radicalise other inmates and foment unrest.

The emerging contacts between terrorists and existing gangs in jails is occurring as the Prison Service is expecting a big increase in the number of terrorists it must look after in the next few years. The growing concern among senior Whitehall officials at the danger of Islamist terrorists seeking to radicalise other prisoners in eight top security jails is disclosed in a Ministry of Justice document.

It reveals that officials are looking at whether more high-security prison accommodation and high-security courts will be needed to cope with the predicted number of terrorists being prosecuted. It also outlines worries within the department over the radicalisation of nonterrorist Muslim prisoners and other offenders in the high-security estate.

“The numbers of convicted and suspected terrorists entering the high-security estate is becoming ever higher. Concerns over the effects of radicalisation are growing,” the paper says. “Early work needs to be done to challenge terrorist behaviour and the threat of radicalisation.”
