We are worried by headlines like ‘Minister warns of inbreeding Muslims’. (stop inbreeding! ed) We are disturbed when an eminent Islamic scholar is denied entry to the UK. (We have the right to keep hatepreachers out/ ed) We are troubled that our concerns on issues of sacrilege are dismissed as an infringement on freedom of speech. Saudi Arabia’s rulers threatened to make it easier for terrorists to attack London unless corruption investigations into their arms deals were halted, according to court documents revealed yesterday.

Previously secret files describe how investigators were told they faced “another 7/7” and the loss of “British lives on British streets” if they pressed on with their inquiries and the Saudis carried out their threat to cut off intelligence.

Prince Bandar, the head of the Saudi national security council, and son of the crown prince, was alleged in court to be the man behind the threats to hold back information about suicide bombers and terrorists. He faces accusations that he himself took more than £1bn in secret payments from the arms company BAE.

He was accused in yesterday’s high court hearings of flying to London in December 2006 and uttering threats which made the prime minister, Tony Blair, force an end to the Serious Fraud Office investigation into bribery allegations involving Bandar and his family.

The threats halted the fraud inquiry, but triggered an international outcry, with allegations that Britain had broken international anti-bribery treaties.

Lord Justice Moses, hearing the civil case with Mr Justice Sullivan, said the government appeared to have “rolled over” after the threats. He said one possible view was that it was “just as if a gun had been held to the head” of the government.

The SFO investigation began in 2004, when Robert Wardle, its director, studied evidence unearthed by the Guardian. This revealed that massive secret payments were going from BAE to Saudi Arabian princes, to promote arms deals.

Yesterday, anti-corruption campaigners began a legal action to overturn the decision to halt the case. They want the original investigation restarted, arguing the government had caved into blackmail.

The judge said he was surprised the government had not tried to persuade the Saudis to withdraw their threats. He said: “If that happened in our jurisdiction [the UK], they would have been guilty of a criminal offence”. Counsel for the claimants said it would amount to perverting the course of justice.

Wardle told the court in a witness statement: “The idea of discontinuing the investigation went against my every instinct as a prosecutor. I wanted to see where the evidence led.”

But a paper trail set out in court showed that days after Bandar flew to London to lobby the government, Blair had written to the attorney general, Lord Goldsmith, and the SFO was pressed to halt its investigation.

The world-renowned Royal United Services Institute has delivered an unprecedented attack on the Government’s security policy.

It condemns the country’s “fragmented” national identity and obsession with multiculturalism.

And it accuses ministers of a “piecemeal and erratic response” to urgent threats to the nation and of starving the armed forces of cash to the point of “chronic disrepair”.

The security think tank, which has unrivalled contact with senior political and military figures, urges ministers to abandon “flabby and bogus strategic thinking” and to make the defence of the realm the “first duty of Government”.

The study also follows two blows this week to Labour’s anti-terror strategy.

Appeal judges have given an Algerian pilot the go-ahead to claim compensation which could run into millions for being wrongly accused of training the September 11 hijackers.

And five young Muslim men had their convictions for terrorist offences quashed by the Appeal Court.

In Wednesday’s ruling the Lord Chief Justice Lord Phillips stated that unless there was clear evidence of “terrorist intent”, merely possessing or sharing extremist material did not amount to a crime.
The law was designed to help police catch so-called “clean-skins” – would-be terrorists who have yet to carry out an atrocity but are in the early stages of planning one.

But the effect of the ruling is that the police will struggle to build a watertight case against suspects based on such early planning or research for an attack, and will instead be forced to wait until plans are far more advanced – increasing the risk of a successful atrocity.

He said Abdullah Merhi was found with a book entitled The 19 Lions, which heaped praise on those involved in the attacks on the World Trade Centre and Pentagon in 2001 that killed almost 3000 people.

“It glorifies the 19 aircraft hijackers responsible . . . and hails them as martyrs, suggesting they will go down in history for perpetrating one of the greatest victories that has ever been perpetrated in the name of Islam,” he said.

“It is all designed to incite would-be pursuers of jihad to pursue violent jihad and to stir themselves to get on and do it.”

Calgary police are investigating an assault on one of three women who recently launched a human rights complaint against a local Muslim leader.

When contacted by the Herald on Thursday evening, Soharwardy said no one from the Al-Madinah Centre would be involved in such a violent incident.

“We are (sharia) law-abiding people. We had nothing to do with this. I condemn this attack absolutely, and I urge the police to do everything to find the people who were involved in this and bring them to justice.”

Police arrested 17 people for rioting tonight in Copenhagen, burning cars and trash cans in Nørrebro, Tingbjerg, Vesterbro and Valby. All together 14 cars and 20 containers were set aflame, and there were 14 cases of vandalism. Police want to keep five people under arrest.

Residents of a building in the Nørrebro district had to be evacuated since police and the fire brigade feared the fire will spread to the building.

According to Jakob Kristensen of the Copenhagen police the riots were not organized and the fire brigade were able to do their job and extinguish the fire. Kristensen says the riots do not have to do with the reprinting of the Muhammad cartoons, which were a cause for a smaller, peaceful demonstration of 200 Muslims next to the municipality. Police were out in massive forces and quieted down the riots.

There was rioting also elsewhere in Denmark. In the Ã…rhus suburb of Brabrand (where the terrorists were arrested yesterday), a city bus was stoned and needed a police escort to continue. In both Brabrand and Kalundborg fire brigades were stoned and prevented from extinguishing blazes.

In Nørrebro social worker Bjarne Feys suggests setting up a new youth-run club for half-criminal immigrants in the neighborhood. He the young immigrants are very frustrated about the police’s stress strategy and react very irrationally. Today there’s only one active club, Kvisten, in inner Nørrebro, but according to Bjarne Feys it’s not big enough, or up to the task.

Mikkel Warming, in charge of social affairs at Copenhagen municipality, is positive about the idea to establish an immigrant youth center in the center of the Nørrebro melting pot. But integration consultant and author Mohammed Rafiq advises against it. He is afraid that those who support the suggestion have lost their judgment and that it will be misused by criminals to sell drugs and stolen goods.

Such a center will interfere with integration, since no Danes would come there and instead he suggests regular sports such as football and swimming, where Danish children and youth also take part.

 Hirsi Ali to EU lawmakers: ‘I don’t want to die’

I don’t want to die,” the Somali-born former Dutch deputy Ayaan Hirsi Ali told lawmakers at the European Parliament on Thursday in an appeal for EU funding to protect her from death threats.
“I don’t want to die, I want to live and I love life,” said Hirsi Ali, who faces death threats over her criticism of Islam. “I find myself in a very desperate position.”

Hirsi Ali has been living under tight police protection since the murder of her associate, Dutch filmmaker Theo Van Gogh, by an Islamic extremist in 2004.

She is threatened with death for her role in writing the script of Van Gogh’s film “Submission”, about the treatment of women in Islam. A note targeting her by name was found on his body.

The former Dutch lawmaker left the Netherlands for the United States in May 2006 following a bitter row which broke out when she admitted lying about her age and name in her Dutch asylum request.

She is currently raising funds to pay for her own protection and works for a conservative think-tank, the American Enterprise Institute in Washington.

Hirsi Ali does not receive financial support for her protection from the Dutch government while she is out of the country, and for legal reasons the United States cannot cover her costs.

“Since October I have been fund-raising full-time,” she said.

“It has become swiftly apparent that the best I can do is raise enough money to pay for the security detail that accompanies me to fund-raising meetings. When the money runs out I am confined in hiding.”

Socialist members of the parliament have launched a petition to secure support for EU funding for her protection.

But with only 82 signatures so far, they are unlikely to receive backing from half of the assembly’s 785 members, as is required for the initiative to become official.

French Socialist Benoit Hamon has called for another option that would see the creation of a “pilot programme that would protect other citizens like Ayaan Hirsi Ali who are also under attack for what they say.”

It could be financed to the tune of 50 million euros by a fund that the parliament has at its disposal each year.

Nasrallah, who rarely appears in public for fear of assassination, told viewers that if Israel wanted this kind of open war, then there would be an open war.

The purported leader of al-Qaida’s affiliate in Iraq called in a new posting on a militant Web site on Thursday for attacks on Israel and proposed that Iraq’s territory be a “launching pad” to seize Jerusalem.

In the 30-minute audiotape, Abu Omar al-Baghdadi, said to head the Islamic State of Iraq, lashed out at Arab and Palestinian groups — especially the Palestinian Hamas — for failing to liberate the Palestinians.

He also called on Hamas’ military wing, the Al-Qassam Brigades, to break away from the group’s political leadership and liberate Jerusalem, or Al-Quds as the city is called in Arabic.

The new posting came as Israeli security instructed embassies and Jewish institutions around the world to go on alert for fear of revenge attacks for a car bomb that killed a top-wanted terrorist, Imad Mughniyeh, late Tuesday in the Syrian capital.

 Sarkozy attacks Iran for its stance on Israel

 PARIS (Reuters) – French President Nicolas Sarkozy said on Wednesday he would refuse to greet any world leader who refused to recognise Israel — a remark apparently ruling out any face-to-face meetings with Iran’s Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Sarkozy made the off-the-cuff remark in a speech to the French-Jewish community in which he reaffirmed his strong support for international sanctions against Tehran over its nuclear programme.

“I won’t shake hands with people who refuse to recognise Israel,” Sarkozy declared.

* Hmmm. Last time we checked he was getting real chummy with Gaddafi, so when did Gaddafi  recognize Israel?

Ahmadinejad, Iran’s hardline president, has in the past called for the Jewish state to be “wiped off the map”.

France has led the way in pressing for sanctions at the U.N. Security Council and in the European Union to get Iran to halt atomic work which Western powers fear is aimed at making bombs.

It recently urged energy companies Total and Gaz de France to refrain from investing in the OPEC country.

Iran says its nuclear programme is a peaceful drive to generate electricity.

“Proliferation is a grave threat to international security. We cannot sit by and do nothing while Iran develops technologies which are in violation of international law,” Sarkozy said.

“Given that Iran has chosen the fait accompli we do not have any other choice but to strengthen its isolation that involves new sanctions at the Security Council and the European Union,” he said. 

Sarkozy announced he would visit Israel in May to mark the 60th anniversary of Israel’s founding after a March visit to Paris by Israel President Shimon Peres.
