HARDLINE Muslim spiritual leaders who preach the fundamentalist Salafi brand of Islam espoused by Osama bin Laden have become the latest recruits in combating global terrorism.

Australian security agencies have been urged by former Scotland Yard counter-terrorism expert Robert Lambert to enlist key Salafi leaders – who are widely perceived to be part of the radicalisation problem – to help prevent young Muslims from embracing al-Qa’ida’s ideology.

Mr Lambert, co-founder of Scotland Yard’s Muslim Contact Unit, said Salafi spiritual leaders, who follow a puritanical interpretation of the Koran and are often accused of being proponents of terrorism, had a vested interest in discrediting al-Qa’ida because the network had hijacked and distorted their true beliefs.

“As far as they’re concerned, al-Qa’ida distorts the Salafi view of the world,” Mr Lambert told The Australian during an interview in London. Australian Salafi leaders yesterday backed the idea of imams working with the authorities to prevent young Muslims from becoming radicalised, but they admitted it would be difficult for them to trust the counter-terrorism agencies.

Prominent Salafi cleric Toufic Mallah said counter-terrorism agencies should have been working closely with fundamentalist leaders to combat radicalisation from the beginning. He accused the authorities of discriminating against and singling out Salafis as extremists.

“These people (in authority) who are genuine I wouldn’t mind working with,” the Sydney-based imam told The Australian.

“But for those who want to use me to achieve what they want to achieve, then no, I don’t want to work with them. But the thing is how do you pick out the genuine from the non-genuine?”

Mr Lambert said some counter-terrorism agencies had failed to recognise the extent to which credible Salafi figures could re-educate the young Muslims recruited by al-Qa’ida to abandon their support for terrorism and embrace “non-violent politics”.

“They have credibility, and if a young Muslim has bought into al-Qa’ida’s world view, they can help,” Mr Lambert said.

“In London, a handful of Salafi and Islamist groups have been at the forefront of groundbreaking community work that successfully counters the adverse influence of al-Qa’ida propaganda among susceptible youth.”

The Howard government refused to involve Salafi clerics – such as the director of the fundamentalist Ahlus Sunnah Wal Jammah organisation, Mohammed Omran – when it set up the Muslim Community Reference Group following the 2005 London bombings.

Sheik Omran, who has praised Osama bin Laden as a “good man”, has expressed his willingness to work with the security agencies, and rejected accusations that he or his organisation were proponents of terrorism.

Sheik Toufic, who admitted he was under constant surveillance by counter-terrorism agencies, said he opposed terrorism on the grounds of religious belief, and taught his students to follow the path of the prophet without resorting to violence.

Arrests on 7th night of unrest across Denmark

COPENHAGEN, Denmark: Angry youths who have been setting fires in immigrant neighborhoods across Denmark for seven consecutive nights should expect no sympathy from society, Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen said Sunday.

“I think it will be the opposite, that a lot of people will turn their backs on them,” the prime minister said in interview with Denmark’s TV2 news channel.

It was the first time he had commented publicly on the weeklong youth violence that has kept police and firefighters busy in cities across Denmark.

It’s not clear what triggered the unrest but some observers say youths from Denmark’s immigrant communities were protesting against perceived police harassment, and suggested Wednesday’s reprinting of a cartoon lampooning the Prophet Muhammad may have aggravated the situation.

Fogh Rasmussen rejected any notion that society was to blame for the unrest.

“We must make clear that the youths are responsible for this — and their parents,” he said.

GANGS of rioters set fire to cars and garbage trucks in northern Copenhagen after demonstrators evicted from a youth centre earlier in the year tried to occupy a new building.
Five youths were arrested in the capital after 28 cars and 35 garbage trucks were burned, Copenhagen police duty officer Jakob Kristensen said.

Danish media said arrests in other towns brought to 29 the number of people police were holding.

Scores of cars and several schools have been vandalised or burned in the past week.

Police could give no reason, but said that unusually mild weather and the closure of schools for a winter break might have contributed.

Police arrested two Tunisians and a Dane of Moroccan descent on Tuesday for planning to kill a cartoonist who drew one of the cartoons printed in a Danish newspaper two years ago that roused a storm of protest in Muslim countries.

Fifteen Danish newspapers reprinted his drawing on Wednesday in protest against the alleged murder plot.

Several hundred Muslims gathered in central Copenhagen yesterday to protest against publication of the cartoon.

‘No Sharia’- sez Canadian Activist

Rome, 15 Feb. (AKI) – Islamic courts must be be ruled out in Britain and other Western countries if the democratic rights of all their citizens are to be safeguarded, Iranian born activist Homa Arjomand, told Adnkronos International (AKI).

Homa Arjomand spearheaded a successful campaign to end faith-based arbitration in Canada.

She strongly disagreed with remarks made earlier in February by the head of the Anglican Church, the Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams, who claimed that Islamic (Sharia) courts in Britain seemed “inevitable” and could aid “social cohesion”.

Political newcomer Andre Carson is the Democratic nominee in a March 11 special election to succeed his late grandmother, Julia Carson, representing Indiana’s 7th District. She died in December of lung cancer, and her grandson is seeking to fill out the rest of her sixth term, which expires at year’s end.

If Andre Carson wins the Democratic-leaning Indianapolis district over a freshman Republican lawmaker and a longshot Libertarian candidate, he would join Rep. Keith Ellison, Minnesota Democrat, as the only Muslims elected to Congress.

‘Asylum’ for 1,500 Iraqi interpreters

Up to 1,500 Iraqis who worked as interpreters for British Armed Forces are to be flown to Britain, it was claimed last night.

The Iraqi interpreters and their families will be settled in two unnamed northern cities from April.

The resettlement operation, being co-ordinated by the Home Office, is alleged to be far bigger than previously thought – it had been reported that fewer than 100 interpreters would be affected.

Gordon Brown agreed to grant asylum to interpreters last year after it was disclosed that the lives of those working for the military in Iraq were in danger.

The Sadrist Shi’ites in Iraq, led by Muqtada Al-Sadr, have declared a three-day mourning period for Imad Mughniya.
An Iraqi security source said that Mughniya had entered Iraq via Iran, and had trained some 500 members of the Mahdi Army, which belongs to the Sadrists.

He added that he had also trained a number of squads in planning and carrying out assassinations within Iraq.

ABC: Saudis Had Mughniyeh, Let Him Go Despite Clinton Pleas

Saudi Arabia’s King Abdullah refused a personal plea from President Bill Clinton to help capture Hezbollah terrorist Imad Mugniyah in 1996, according to former White House counterterrorism chief Richard Clarke, now an ABC News consultant.

Clarke says the CIA learned that Mugniyah, wanted for a string of terror attacks, had boarded a commercial flight in Khartoum that was scheduled to stop in Riyadh.

“We appealed to the Saudis to grab him when the plane landed, and they refused,” Clarke said in an interview broadcast Wednesday on ABC “World News with Charles Gibson.”

Suicide bomber kills 80 at dog fight in Afghanistan

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan — A suicide bombing Sunday at an outdoor dog fighting competition killed 80 people and wounded dozens more, a governor said, in what appeared to be the deadliest terror attack in Afghanistan since the fall of the Taliban in 2001.

More than 300 people had gathered to watch the event on the western edge of the southern city of Kandahar, including several Afghan militia leaders. Kandahar Gov. Asadullah Khalid said 80 had been killed. Abdullah Fahim, a Health Ministry spokesman, said about 90 people were wounded.

Witnesses reported gunfire after the blast from bodyguards. It was not immediately clear if the bullets killed anyone.

Faizullah Qar Gar, a resident of Kandahar who was at the dog fight, said bodyguards of militant commanders opened fire on the crowd after the bombing.

But when Wilders says, “I have a problem with Islamic tradition, culture, ideology. Not with Muslim people,” how is that different from saying that he has a problem with any other tradition, culture, ideology? Would his mainstream critics really reject such a statement aimed at Nazism? Should any ideology, any system of beliefs, really be placed off-limits for criticism? Should criticism of any ideology really be classified as “racism”? After all, it was no lesser a luminary than CAIR’s Ibrahim Hooper who said, “Islam is an ideology. It’s not a race.” So if it is an ideology, it can be liked or disliked, and subjected to critical scrutiny like any other, no?

“No to double standards”! Exactly! The Archdhimmi of Canterbury, in calling for Islamic law in Britain, was calling for double standards — Islamic laws for Muslims, secular laws for everyone else. Those who opposed him were standing up for equal citizenship and equal rights — exactly what these groups profess to want. And keeping out Qaradawi? I would hope that if the Mayor of London wanted to bring in a Presbyterian proponent of suicide terror, that he would be kept out also — equal rights for all!

And what about the bugging of Sadiq Khan? His “jailed constituent” is accused of running a website that raised funds of the Taliban and Chechen jihadists. I’d be fine with any member of Parliament, Muslim or non-Muslim, being bugged when he visits constituents who are plotting the mass murder of innocent people and their subjugation under a draconian legal system that would deny them equality of rights. How would that be? Equal rights for all!

A U.S. congressman is asking Georgetown University about its academic scrutiny of Saudi Arabia and its use of $20 million donated by a Saudi prince in 2005.

U.S. Rep. Frank Wolf (R-VA) wrote to Georgetown President John DeGioia Thursday, saying he was concerned about how the money was being spent at the university’s Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding. Of particular concern, Wolf said, was the university’s role in training current and prospective U.S. foreign service personnel.

Esposito has a history of minimizing the threat of Islamic extremism and supporting Islamist regimes and movements. He has praised Muslim Brotherhood spiritual guide Yusuf al-Qaradawi as an intellectual who “reinterpreted Islamic principles to reconcile Islam with democratization and multiparty political systems and recast and expand traditional doctrine regarding the status (dhimmi) of non-Muslim minorities.”

Qaradawi has expressed support for the killing of American forces in Iraq and praised Palestinian suicide bombers, writing “it is wrong to consider these acts as ‘suicidal,’ because these are heroic acts of martyrdom, which are in fact very different from suicide.”

In the summer of 2001, Esposito criticized those who emphasize the threat Osama bin Laden posed. “There’s a danger in making Bin Laden the poster boy of global terrorism, and not realizing that there are a lot of other forces involved in global terrorism,” Esposito wrote in The Fletcher Forum of World Affairs. “Bin Laden has become the new symbol, following in the footsteps of Qaddafi, Khomeini, and Sheikh Omar Abdur Rahman. Bin Laden is a perfect media symbol: He’s tall, gaunt, striking, and always has a Kalashnikov with him. As long as we focus on these images we continue to see Islam and Islamic activism through the prism of ayatollahs and Iran, of Bin Laden and the Afghan Arabs.”

In addition to his academic work, Esposito has been allied with a series of people directly involved in terrorist and extremist movements. He continues to consider Sami Al-Arian, an acknowledged member of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad, to be a friend and “[o]ne of the most impressive people I have met under fire.”

Georgetown professor John Esposito, director of the Saudi-financed Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding has a reputation as an apologist for radical Islam. And it’s one he lived up to with a Stanford University speech last week titled, “Dying for God? Suicide Terrorism and Militant Islam.”

Esposito claimed that Islamic terrorism grows primarily out of a sense of political and economic grievance and, of course, “occupation” on the part of “neo-colonial powers.” This spin allowed him to deflect responsibility for Islamic terrorism to the West while negating the need for self-reflection among Muslims.

When an attendee asked him why no other impoverished or oppressed group around the world resorts to suicide bombings, Esposito stonewalled for several minutes before giving one of the few straight answers of the night: “I don’t know.”

Esposito displayed contempt for anyone calling for the theological and cultural reform of Islam. He described Middle East Forum director Daniel Pipes and Princeton professor Bernard Lewis as “among the Darth Vaders of the world,” and Pipes and Islam scholar Robert Spencer as “Islamophobes.” Others on the receiving end of Esposito’s vitriol included Martin Kramer, Fouad Ajami, V.S. Naipaul, Max Boot, and Steven Emerson. Esposito has a penchant for laying into his opponents, but this juvenile behavior fails to answer the substance of his detractors’ points.

The Islamic Society of Stanford University and the Muslim Student Awareness Network at Stanford University (MSAN), co-sponsors of the Islamic Awareness Series 2008, seem to share Esposito’s views. Despite calling this year’s offering, “Our Jihad to Reform: The Struggle to Define Our Faith,” MSAN makes clear in an op-ed on the subject that such “reform” has its limits. As they put it:

Our reform will not be dictated by the likes of Daniel Pipes, Ayaan Hirsi Ali, and David Horowitz, according to their desires to subvert our tradition, but by Islamic scholars according to the Islamic notion of reform.

Apparently, Esposito fits the bill.

The Saudi Fifth Column On Our Nation’s Campuses

From Riyadh to Ramallah to the Ivy League, Saudi Arabia’s “Wahhabi Lobby” is funding the goals of radical Islam and undermining America’s War On Terror.

The press has reported the Department of Justice’s closures of Saudi “charitable” fronts like the Muslim World League, the Al-Haramain Foundation, the International Islamic Relief Organization (IIRO), and others that raised money for al-Qaeda, Hamas and Islamic Jihad.1 But the government has so far ignored an even larger network of Saudi front groups working to establish the party line on our nation’s campuses. This network is embedded deep within our system of higher education, including many of our most prestigious universities. The Saudis have steadily infiltrated American educational institutions with vast infusions of cash.2 At the same time they look to steer college curricula and public opinion – especially about the Middle East – toward their Wahhabist goals.3

Saudi Wahhabism fuels a fiery hatred for the West’s religious tolerance. It views attempts by the West to promote democratic reforms within its medieval Arab monarchy as an affront to Islam. In other words, it shares the religious and political views of its wayward Saudi son Osama bin Laden. Accordingly, the Saudi royal family has been waging its own quiet jihad of disinformation to advance its goals. The Senate Judiciary Committee recently heard testimony from fellow senators and terrorism experts that the Bush administration has not recognized the dangers posed by Saudi influence. In fact, the kingdom controls most of the Muslim organizations in the United States. For instance, 80 percent of the mortgages on mosques in the U.S. are paid for by the Wahhabi Saudis.

VIENNA — The southernmost Austrian state of Carinthia has passed a law effectively banning the construction of mosques, drawing fire from the opposition and Muslims for religious freedom violations.
“I can only recommend to all to have the courage to stand up effectively against this Islamisation that is creeping through Europe and represents a totally different culture,” Governor Joerg Haider was quoted as saying by Reuters.

“We are really the pioneers on this,” added Haider, also the leader of the far-right Alliance for the Future of Austria party.

The law requires plans for any building of “extraordinary architecture or size” to be approved by a commission to judge its compatibility with the standard look of towns.

This means that mosques would stand little chance of permits.

Haider make international headlines in the 1990s with xenophobic remarks when his rightist Freedom Party became the second biggest in Austria.

After an internecine power struggle, he broke away from the Freedom Party and founded the Alliance in 2005.

But the new party’s national impact has been negligible since Haider decided to focus on his home region of Carinthia.

Infringement

The new law drew immediate rebuke from the opposition and Muslims alike.

“We are creating a law for something that doesn’t exist,” fumed provincial Social Democratic leader Gaby Schaunig.

Schaunig said there was no request to build a mosque in the overwhelmingly Roman Catholic province.

Carinthia is home to 11,000 Muslims out of an estimated 400,000 population, the second-lowest Muslim population in Austria.

Muslims, estimated at 400,000 or nearly 4 percent of the population, also denounced the law.

Omar Al-Rawi, the spokesman for Austria’s Islamic community, said it violated principles of equality and religious freedom and put Austria’s reputation on the line.

Though Islam is the continent’s second religion, European Muslims are facing campaigns from far-right groups have stately mosques on claims that they are signs of the “Islamization” of Europe.

In Germany, a plan by the Turkish Islamic Union (DITIB) to build a mosque in Cologne has met opposition on claims that it would be too big for a city housing one of the most imposing Gothic cathedrals in the Christian world.

In London, a petition against a mosque next to the 2012 London Olympics site was posted on Prime Minister Gordon Brown’s Web site.

In France, which is home to Europe’s largest Muslim minority of about six million, the National Republican Movement (MNR) won two court cases last year against giving pieces of land at low prices to Muslims to build two mosques in suburbs of Montreuil and in Marseille, both having a sizable Muslim minority.

In Switzerland, two right-wing parties have launched a petition for a referendum to ban mosque minarets.

Imam undercuts himself by twisting his own words

Earlier this week, Calgary Imam Syed Soharwardy spent nearly two hours with the Herald’s editorial board before announcing he would withdraw his two-year-long Alberta human rights complaint against Ezra Levant, the publisher of the defunct Western Standard magazine.

Soharwardy lodged the complaint after Levant published Danish cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad that were central to murderous protests around the world by Muslims, including renewed violence in Denmark on Friday.

Soharwardy is trying to take back his complaint, but it’s already too late. Levant’s resolve is too strong and freedom of expression too fundamental a right to be so easily shrugged off after the microscope of world attention ended up being turned on Soharwardy.

The founder of the Islamic Supreme Council of Canada (ISCC) asked for a meeting with the Herald’s editorial board via an e-mail, arguing that Levant was “attempting to paint me as a hate-mongering, anti-Semitic, Wahabi radical who wants to see Canada governed under sharia law. Nothing could be further from the truth.”

While preparing for the meeting, a quick search on Canwest’s library system showed a Jan. 17, 2004, column written by the cleric.

In it, he wrote: “Sharia cannot be customized for specific countries. These universal, divine laws are for all people of all countries for all times.”

In the same column he also boasts: “I am one of the founding members of the Islamic Institute of Civil Justice. The mandate of the institute is to resolve disputes within existing Canadian laws by using the principles of conflict resolution from Islamic Law, or sharia.”

His column is clear. He wanted to bring sharia to Canada and even helped found the organization that spearheaded the drive to do so.

But in our meeting, Soharwardy denied his own column. “I never asked to bring sharia in Canada,” he now insists.

* When the adherents of the Muhammedan faith arrive in Australia, they have usually already been through several other Islamic countries, where their brothers and sisters have a religious obligation to assist them. Curiously, these people have no intention to settle anywhere along the way amongst their Muslim brothers & sisters, but they are determined to invade the lands of the hated infidels at any cost, where they can be sure that bleeding hearts and plenty of dubious ‘human rights’ organizations will assist them to help themselves to the fleshpots of civilization. AN IRANIAN refugee who sewed his lips together while on a hunger strike in Baxter Detention Centre is now suing the Commonwealth of Australia for damages.

Abdul Amir Hamidi came to Australia on a boat in June 2000 from Iran, where he had been imprisoned and tortured for several months.

Mr Hamidi, 35, claims his treatment by Australian authorities triggered a severe psychiatric illness, for which he will need supervision for the rest of his life.

In his South Australian Supreme Court statement of claim, Mr Hamidi says he was repeatedly physically and verbally abused by detention centre guards.

Three of Britain’s most senior judges condemned the Metropolitan Police and the Crown Prosecution Service for abusing the court process, presenting false allegations and not disclosing evidence.

Mr Raissi’s eyes filled with tears and he “wept with relief”. Outside the Royal Courts of Justice yesterday he told The Times: “I’ve regained my dignity, it feels as if I can breathe and I am free again. The judges have said there were serious faults and an abuse of process in my case and that has restored my faith in British justice. I knew this day would come.”

The judges also ordered the Home Office and the Ministry of Justice to reconsider the repeated refusal to compensate Mr Raissi for locking him in Belmarsh prison for six months and accusing him of the murders of thousands of people. Solicitors for Mr Raissi, 33, are expected to lodge a claim for compensation which — taking into account his loss of a career as an airline pilot, wrongful imprisonment and damage to his health — is expected to exceed £2 million.

£2 million will do him nicely. These judges are insane…
