An Egyptian judge ruled this week in an unprecedented case that a Muslim who converted to Christianity cannot legally change his religious status, although he may believe what he wants in his heart.

Muhammad Hegazy, 25, lost his case on Tuesday when Judge Muhammad Husseini of a court in Cairo said according to sharia, or Islamic law, Islam is the final and most complete religion and therefore Muslims already practice full freedom of religion and cannot convert to an older belief (Christianity or Judaism), according to Christian Solidarity Worldwide.

No compulsion in religion.

“He (Hegazy) can believe whatever he wants in his heart, but on paper he can’t convert,” Husseini told the administrative court, according to a member of Hegazy’s legal team to Compass Direct.
Judge Husseini based his decision on Article II of the Egyptian constitution, which makes sharia the source of Egyptian law.

Hegazy has denounced the ruling as a “violation” of his basic rights.

“What does the state have to do with the religion I embrace?” Hegazy questioned, according to the United States Copts Association following the ruling.
The convert’s defense team was also disappointed with the verdict.
“The judge didn’t listen to our defense, and we didn’t even have a chance to talk before the court,” said Gamel Eid, head of the Arab Network for Human Rights Information (ANHRI) to U.S. Copts Association.

But according to documented videos of PA TV programs monitored by Palestinian Media Watch (PMW), the PA is telling its Arab audience that there will be no Israel at all, rather one large Arab Palestine will rule the entirety of Israel.

Gaza rocket barrage hits Israel

Israel says Palestinian militants have continued to fire rockets from Gaza into Israeli territory.
Israeli officials say nearly 20 devices were launched on Friday, causing no injuries and little damage.

Late on Thursday, Israel began cutting back on the electricity it supplies to Gaza from the Israeli grid.

On Thursday Israeli strikes killed seven people in Gaza – six of them militants – in operations aimed at halting the rocket fire.

One poster showed a comparison to Solingen, where in a xenophobic attack in 1993 five Turkish women and children were burned, but they attached one of the banners to the fencings. Meeting with German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Berlin, Turkish Prime Minister Erdogan called for Turkish-language schools and universities to be set up in Germany. The plan has met with scepticism in Germany.
During a meeting with Merkel and school students from Berlin on Friday, Feb 8, to discuss problems of young migrants such as language barriers,  Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan said he was in favour of integration and against assimiliation.

The Turkish leader said he supported integration efforts but ‘people’s differences must be accepted.’

“In Germany, it should be possible for high schools to be set up where the teaching is in Turkish,” Erdogan said, adding he also favored the idea of Turkish-language universities in Germany.

 He added that children would not be able to master German unless they could speak their own language and added that Turkey would be willing to send over teachers.

KOSOVO’S unilateral declaration of independence from Serbia was imminent and set to be recognised by about 100 countries, its Prime Minister Hashim Thaci said.

“It is a done (deal). Everybody knows it. None of the authorities from Belgrade can affect the positive development of a declaration and recognition of the independence of Kosovo,” Mr Thaci said.

“We have confirmations of about 100 countries around the world which are ready to recognise independence immediately after the declaration of independence.

“We will have a strong and massive (international) recognition,” he said after meeting with Joachim Ruecker, the head of the UN mission that has run Kosovo since the end of its 1998-1999 war.

The statement was made as Serbia’s minister for Kosovo, Slobodan Samardzic, said his government had information that Mr Thaci would make an illegal declaration of independence on February 17.

The unusual suggestion from Britain’s highest ranking Christian leader Thursday would, if adopted, allow British Muslims to choose to resolve marital and financial disputes under Islamic law, known as Shariah, rather than through British courts.

Archbishop Rowan Williams said in a radio interview with the BBC that incorporating Islamic law could help improve Britain’s flagging social cohesion.

“Certain provisions of Shariah are already recognized in our society and under our law, so it’s not as if we’re bringing in an alien and rival system,” said Williams, who gave a speech on the topic Thursday night.

Prime Minister Gordon Brown’s spokesman immediately rejected Williams’ proposal.

“The prime minister believes British law should apply in this country, based on British values,” said Michael Ellam.

The idea was also rejected by Sayeed Warsi, an opposition spokeswoman for social affairs. She said all British citizens had to be subject to the same laws developed by Parliament.

Williams said he was not advocating that Britain allow extreme aspects of Shariah, which has been associated with harsh punishments meted out by Islamic courts in Saudi Arabia and some other countries and has been used to undermine the rights of women.

“Nobody in their right mind” would want to see that, he said. He called for “a clear eye” when discussing Islamic law.

Mohammed Shafiq, director of the Ramadhan Foundation, said the use of Shariah would help lower tensions in British society.

“It would make Muslims more proud of being British,” he said. “It would give Muslims the sense that the British respect our faith.”

The United States on Thursday urged Israel not to exacerbate the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip, where Israel has scaled down its energy supply as it pursues rocket launchers in the territory.

“We understand Israel’s right to defend itself but we do not think that action should be taken that would infringe upon or worsen the humanitarian situation for the civilian population in Gaza,” said US State Department spokesman Tom Casey.

“I am sure we will continue to convey that position to them.”

Israel on Thursday began reducing by the electricity it supplies to Gaza via high-tension power lines. “The Israeli electricity company on Thursday evening reduced by about 1% the electricity supplied by high tension line to the Gaza Strip,” Defense Ministry spokesman Shlomo Dror said.

Speaking in Israel, Defense Minister Ehud Barak vowed that “if the rocket fire from Gaza continues, we will intensify our operations and strikes against the other side, until a solution is found.”

Earlier, the cabinet agreed that burqas would be banned for government workers and at schools. On Friday, the government is expected to announce that burqas will also be banned from public transport. And for those of you cynical enough to believe that all of this has anything to do with Islamophobia, the ban, if introduced, will also apply to balaclavas and crash helmets.

(IsraelNN.com) Hamas leaders spoke to the Arabic language Ash-Sharq il-Awsat newspaper recently and explained that as Muslims, they are allowed to lie. In an interview printed on Thursday, senior Hamas terrorists explained, “A Muslim is permitted to say things that oppose his beliefs in order to prevent damages or to be saved from death.”

This approach, known in Arabic as “taqiyya,” was behind several Hamas leaders’ recent public expression of support for Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas, they explained. Senior Hamas terrorists in Samaria, who were recently released from jail, publicly expressed disapproval with the Hamas takeover of Gaza and said they supported the PA forces. The sources quoted in Ash-Sharq il-Awsat explained that the Samarian terrorists’ announcement was not a sign of dissent within Hamas ranks, but rather a permitted use of “taqiyya” to deceive Abbas and avoid prison sentences.

Police have released details of a woman who attacked two pilots on a flight from Blenheim to Christchurch this morning.

The woman, who also made bomb threats, is a 33-year-old Blenheim resident.

Both pilots suffered knife wounds, one to the hand and the other to a foot, and are now in hospital. One passenger received a minor injury that was treated at the scene.

The woman, who police said was originally from Somalia, made bomb threats claiming there were two bombs on board the plane.

Abu Hamza al-Masri once led London’s Finsbury Park Mosque, which was attended by both Sept. 11 conspirator Zacarias Moussaoui and “shoe bomber” Richard Reid. One top British counterterrorism official described the mosque as a “honeypot for extremists.”

The Egyptian-born al-Masri was arrested on a U.S. extradition warrant in 2004, but the process was put on hold while he stood trial in Britain and appealed his convictions.

The Home Secretary today has signed an order approving the extradition,” a Home Office spokesman said, speaking on condition of anonymity in line with department policy.

Al-Masri has 14 days to appeal. If he does not, he will be sent to the U.S. within 28 days, the spokesman said.

Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhum, responding to the remarks, said that “rather than criticise the resistance one should provide aid to the resistance and to the Palistanian swine, because it defends the entire Islamic nation.”

MENA also quoted Egypt’s Defence Minister Mohammed Hussein Tantawi as saying that no one was allowed to violate national security and that Egypt has a military arsenal “that conforms with the most modern technology in the world.”

Egypt is the second largest recipient of United States military aid after Israel.
