Balkenende’s appeal to Geert Wilders on Friday stopped short of demanding that he not release the film, which Wilders said was in the final stages of editing.
“Already we are having to take account of serious threats to Dutch people,” Balkenende said in a televised news conference.
“When you see how the reactions have been at home and abroad, what the risks could be of this film, then there’s one person who must answer for it, and that is Mr Wilders himself,” he said.

Dutch Government discusses Censorship

Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf reports that the Dutch government has researched how they can ban the Islam critical movie Fitna of parliamentary member Geert Wilders (PVV). The government thinks they have found lawful ways to invoke censorship rules in the Netherlands. But the Dutch government, a coalition of Christian Democrats (CDA), Socialist (PvdA) and the tiny Christian Union (CU) has not yet reached consensus on how to do it, say sources close to the government. The Christian parties support censorship of Muslim critical expressions, they want to invoke National Security articles for suppressing them. Although some socialist in the government agree with that approach others do not. Socialist vice premier Wouter Bos, does not want preventive measures, he wants to legally prosecute Wilders after the releases of his 15 minute Islam critical film. But that will not be possible, if the movie is censored preventively. He also points out that the Islamic governments have some responsibility to prevent anti Dutch violence.

THE Swiss Egyptian (residing in Switzerland) Islamic activist Tariq Ramadan has been invited by Griffith University to be the keynote speaker at its conference opening in Brisbane today.

The fact that Australia is allowing Ramadan to enter the country at all will raise eyebrows in security circles elsewhere. Ramadan is the grandson of Hassan al-Banna, founder of the Muslim Brotherhood: the spiritual backers of al-Qa’ida and Hamas and whose goal is to Islamise the world.

While it is, of course, unfair to tar someone with his grandfather’s views, there is ample reason to think that in the case of Tariq Ramadan the apple has not fallen far from the tree.

Ramadan has been banned from entering the US because of his alleged association with extremists. The Geneva Islamic Centre, with which he is closely associated, has been linked to terrorists of the Algerian FIS (Islamic Salvation Front) and the GIA (Armed Islamic Group). A Spanish police report claimed that Ahmed Brahim, an al-Qa’ida leader jailed in Spain, was “in frequent contact” with Ramadan, a claim he has denied.

Yet the Swiss activist has not only been allowed into Britain but is ensconced at St Anthony’s College, Oxford as a research fellow and is much lionised by the British establishment, appearing at security seminars on Islamism and even serving as an adviser to the British Government on tackling Islamic extremism.

So how to explain this wild divergence of views about Tariq Ramadan? And does Australia have cause to be concerned?

Ramadan’s message is highly seductive to a Western world terrified by Islamic radicalism. For Ramadan preaches the comforting message of an unthreatening Islam that can accommodate itself to modernity and to the West. He does so in a charismatic style combining high intellect, a winsome French accent and impossibly hip glamour. To the desperate British establishment, the picture he paints so beguilingly of a way out of the Islamist nightmare has made him into the rock star of the counter-terrorism circuit.

But closer scrutiny of what he actually says – and perhaps even more importantly, does not say – suggests the talented Mr Ramadan is an Islamist wolf in moderniser’s clothing. To the Islamic world he says one thing; to credulous Western audiences quite another in language that is slippery, opaque, manipulative and disingenuous.

His reputation as a Muslim reformer owes everything to the wishful thinking of those who want so much to believe in him that they fail to grasp what he is really saying.

Partly, this is because much of his work is in French. The writer Caroline Fourest has analysed it and her book, Brother Tariq: the Doublespeak of Tariq Ramadan has just been translated from French into English.

All who are concerned to halt the spread of radical Islamism should read this book. For it shows without doubt that the poster boy for Islamic reform is in fact one of the most sophisticated proponents of the global jihad.

Ramadan claims he has “no functional connection” with the Muslim Brotherhood. But he was trained at the Leicester Islamic Foundation in England, the controversial institution that propagates the doctrines of the key Islamist ideologues Maulana Maududi and Syed Qutb and which aims to promote “an Islamic social order in Great Britain”.

And Ramadan has repeatedly said that his grandfather’s views have “inspired” him and “there is nothing in this heritage that I reject”.

Germany: suspected Muslim killings of Christians corroborated

Muslims near Ludwigshafen are suspected to have murdered three Georgian Christian motorcar dealers who came to buy vehicles: Reason: The car buyers came with large crucifixes around the neck, which is disliked by Muslims.

So far, the story sounded hard to imagine.

One of the Christians, by the instructions of an imam, had his head cut off while he was still alive. This happened in the middle of Germany at the end of January 2008.

Now it seems that the incredible story is confirmed. Meanwhile, two more Muslims under suspicion have been arrested.

One of the murderers, a man from the Middle East, is said to have lived in Germany since 2001 and was a trusted informer for undercover police work. It will be interesting to see whether and how the investigatons are going to be conducted due to the complex relations between the police and the murderers. Will this crime be treated as an act of political Islam or the crime of some mentally confused immigrants come citizens?

Ms Courtney allegedly agreed to plant a bomb in exchange for a promise of marriage from Kalache.

Prof Ramadan – whose grandfather, Hassan al-Banna, founded one of the world’s most radical Islamist movements, the Muslim Brotherhood, in 1928 – is due to deliver a lecture on Islam, The Weekend Australian reports.

The conference has attracted $50,000 in Bligh government sponsorship, the newspaper says, and Muslim and Jewish leaders are concerned about his second visit to Australia.

Ramadan was refused entry into France in 1995 after he was accused of having links to an Algerian Islamist, but the ban was lifted the following year. He was also banned by Saudi Arabia, Tunisia and Egypt “after he suggested a moratorium on Sharia law, in particular corporal punishment, stonings and beheadings”, according to the Guardian newspaper.

He has been accused of playing down terrorist campaigns, including the September 11 attacks and the 2005 London bombings, as “interventions”. Security sources have told The Weekend Australian Professor Ramadan will remain under close surveillance.

His visit comes a year after Canadian-born Muslim cleric Bilal Philips was refused entry into Australia to headline a Melbourne conference on Islam after the US Government named him an “un-indicted co-conspirator” in the 1993 World Trade Centre bombing in New York, which killed six and injured 1000.

Government hopes of deporting dozens of terror suspects to their home countries suffered a serious setback today with the European court of human rights ruling against one such attempt.
The grand chamber of 17 judges at the Strasbourg court ruled unanimously that an attempt by Italy to send a man back to Tunisia violated the ban on torture or inhuman or degrading treatment in the European convention on human rights.

The case was brought by Nassim Saadi against Italy. The British government intervened in the hope the court would sanction the return of suspects regardless of their home country’s human rights record.

Ministers argued the right of the public to be protected against terrorism should be balanced against a suspect’s rights not to be ill-treated.

The court ruled that protection against torture is absolute and Saadi cannot be sent back, even though he has been convicted of terror-related offences in both Tunisia and Italy….

The statement by Germany’s Interior Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble that European newspapers should reprint the controversial Danish cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) as a show of support for press freedom is astounding.

His ministry certainly understands the potential dangers. It has embarked on a damage limitation exercise, claiming his comments have been misinterpreted. They have not. The plain fact is that he said “all European newspapers should print these cartoons, with the explanation ‘We find them abysmal, too, but the exercise of press freedom is no reason to use violence’.”

The argument does not convince, especially coming from the interior minister of a country that consciously restricts press freedom. No German paper is allowed to question the Holocaust.

* So why would an Arab question it?

And, what if freedom of the press stirs up violence? People should not have responded with violence to the cartoons — but that they did, and will almost certainly do again if they are reprinted. That is the fact of the matter and Schaeuble knows it.

* Perhaps if the soldiers of Allah go on a rampage there will be a blowback and the Germans call out the army. And they won’t use rubber bullets either, wanna bet?

He should have kept his mouth shut, regardless of what he thinks about press freedom. In saying what he did and because he is the interior minister, his call to reprint is inevitably seen as Germany’s view. It is not for us to demand his resignation but it is impossible to believe that Germans will not do so. He has been grossly irresponsible. He is playing with fire. He has created a crisis for his country where there was none beforehand. He has sown division between Germany’s Muslims and non-Muslims and stirred up the potential for discord and disorder. That is hardly what is expected of a government minister whose remit is law and order.
