An undercover survey of more than 100 mosques and Islamic schools in America has exposed widespread radicalism, including the alarming finding that 3 in 4 Islamic centers are hotbeds of anti-Western extremism, WND has learned.

The Mapping Sharia in America Project, sponsored by the Washington-based Center for Security Policy, has trained former counterintelligence and counterterrorism agents from the FBI, CIA and U.S. military, who are skilled in Arabic and Urdu, to conduct undercover reconnaissance at some 2,300 mosques and Islamic centers and schools across the country.

“So far of 100 mapped, 75 should be on a watchlist,” an official familiar with the project said.

Many of the Islamic centers are operating under the auspices of the Saudi Arabian government and U.S. front groups for the radical Muslim Brotherhood based in Egypt.

Frank Gaffney, a former Pentagon official who runs the Center for Security Policy, says the results of the survey have not yet been published. But he confirmed that “the vast majority” are inciting insurrection and jihad through sermons by Saudi-trained imams and anti-Western literature, videos and textbooks.

“We have too many mosques in this country,” said Rep. Pete King, R-N.Y. “There are too many people who are sympathetic to radical Islam. We should be looking at them more carefully.”

For years now I have pointed out the shallowness and flimsiness of condemnations of terror by American Islamic groups, and noted that American mosques and schools have no programs to teach against the jihad ideology and Islamic supremacism, as one might have expected them to institute after 9/11 if they really stood where they claimed they stood.

And in 1999, the Naqshbandi Sufi Sheikh Muhammad Hisham Kabbani testified before a State Department open forum that eighty percent of American mosques had extremist leadership. And then there was the January 2005 report from the Center for Religious Freedom, “Saudi publications on Hate Ideology Fill American Mosques” (pdf here).

Italy: Far-right candidate of Moroccan origin says there are too many mosques

Padova, 22 Feb. (AKI) – The first Moroccan-born member of Italy’s far-right Northern League party has complained that there are too many mosques in Italy.

Zakaria Najib is an Italian citizen who came to Italy when he was 20 years old. Now aged 50, he lives in the province of Padua in northern Italy.

He is now planning to run in Italy’s general elections in April as a candidate for the Northern League, an anti-immigrant party that campaigns for autonomy for Italy’s wealthy north.

Although a member of the Cadoneghe city council in the province of Padua between 1999 and 2003, two months ago he told a local newspaper that he had asked president Giorgio Napoletano to take away his Italian citizenship so he could be Moroccan again.

He said being a foreigner in Italy was better because they were “given homes and work, while I only have taxes and difficulties in paying the bills at the end of every month”.

He criticised in particular the policies of leftist city administrations for helping immigrants and in particular Muslim immigrants.

“In a nearby city council, 30,000 euros were given to restructure a mosque,” Najib told AKI.

“Now they want to give another 800,000 euros to construct another bigger mosque a few kilometres away. It is time to say enough. I am not against mosques but here we really have too many.”

Najib admitted that he was no longer a practising Muslim and only considered himself culturally linked to Islam having been born in North Africa.

“I believe that everyone has the right to have their own beliefs but they must pay for it themselves,” he said.

“It is not fair that taxpayers’ money is being used to build mosques. On top of that I don’t like the imams that I have seen inside the mosques and I think these are places that have to be controlled.”

Najib has said that he is available to run as a candidate for a Senate seat for the Northern League. Party sources in Padua say that the decision depends on the federal and provincial councils of the party.

Despite that he says if elected, his first proposal would be to deal with what he called the excessive presence of mosques in the northern Italian region of Veneto.

A dossier of complaints compiled by his solicitors states: “He receives insufficient food which appears to be out-of-date and does not meet his dietary requirements.

“He has been left in a room without adequate facilities to meet the needs of a disabled person. This included no heads on taps so he did not have access to cold water and didn’t have his diabetic pack.”

BANGKOK, Thailand: An exiled Muslim rebel leader warned Thailand’s new government that a violent Islamic insurgency in the south could worsen if the region is denied sovereignty, renewing debate over a possible referendum on autonomy.

The comments from Lukman B. Lima, who heads the Pattani United Liberation Organization from exile in Sweden, were the first from the Muslim rebel movement since Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej and his interior minister made conflicting remarks on the issue earlier this month.

“The worst-case scenario can still be avoided, but only if Mr. Samak and the military forces allow the people of Pattani to determine their own future,” Lukman said in an e-mailed statement received by The Associated Press on Friday.

“If, in a referendum sanctioned by Bangkok, Pattani chooses independence, there will be one less border in the world marked by endemic conflict,” he said.

Thailand annexed the independent sultanate of Pattani in the early 20th century, and the mostly Muslim region is now divided into three provinces — Pattani, Narathiwat and Yala. Residents have long complained of being treated as second-class citizens in the predominantly Buddhist country. Past governments have failed to quell the insurgency despite the presence of 40,000 troops and police officers in the region.

Lukman’s organization, known by the acronym PULO, is one of several groups involved in a century-old struggle for independence in the south. More than 2,900 people have died since violence flared in 2004. Drive-by shootings and small-scale bombings occur almost daily.

It was not clear to what extent Lukman’s comments reflected the views of the other shadowy groups involved in the insurgency. PULO is the only rebel organization to comment on the fighting, and its leaders have been in self-imposed exile in Sweden for several years.

Nimukta Waba, a Muslim lawmaker from Pattani province, said Friday he did not believe Lukman knew what people in the region wanted.

“The local people are only demanding justice, fair treatment and equal rights,” said Nimukta from the Puea Pandin Party — a member of the government’s ruling coalition. “I think at least 90 percent of people here do not want autonomy. It would be useless to hold a referendum.”

Col. Akara Thiprote, the regional army spokesman, noted 75 percent of voters in the south cast ballots at the Dec. 23 general election.

Interior Minister Chalerm Yoobambrung said this month the new government would consider granting partial autonomy to the region. Samak responded it would be dangerous to grant self-rule to the south — apparently overruling Chalerm, who quickly retracted his comments, saying he did not want the issue to “create conflict and start an argument.”

A former Muslim military chaplain assigned to Guantanamo Bay has claimed in an interview that none of the detainees at the U.S. prison camp can be classified as terrorists.

“It’s safe to say there weren’t any prisoners who could be definitely connected to hardcore terrorism,” ex-U.S. Army Capt. James “Yousef” Yee said in a recent interview conducted in the U.K. with BBC radio.

The Pentagon last week announced it would seek the death penalty against at least six al-Qaida terrorist suspects currently held at Gitmo. It charges that Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, Mohammed al-Qahtani, Ramzi Binalshibh, Ali Abd al-Aziz Ali, Mustafa Ahmad al-Hawsawi and Waleed bin Attash conspired to murder almost 3,000 people in the 9/11 attacks.

Several other Gitmo detainees have been linked to al-Qaida in addition to the six, who face a military tribunal at a specially constructed court at the base in Cuba.

COUNTER-TERRORISM agencies fear that local extremists are increasingly using mobile phones connected to overseas networks to thwart investigators and spread hardline propaganda.

Agents from Victoria Police and ASIO are investigating the sale of mobile phones within Melbourne’s Somali community that are being used to receive al-Qa’ida-linked motivational videos of Islamic extremists torturing and beheading “infidels”.

The connection of mobiles to overseas networks is frustrating police as bugging telephones has been a good method of tracking and infiltrating suspected extremists. The Weekend Australian understands the mobile phones are being sold at some hardline Islamic prayer halls and mosques in Melbourne for between $500 and $1000.

It is believed the phones are connected to telephone networks in Lebanon and Syria.

The phones are connected to anonymous foreign accounts and calls, emails and video messages are limited to phones using the same overseas network to make them more difficult to trace.

Making overseas calls from an international phone in Australia involves the transmission of signals to a local phone tower, which then sends a signal to a fixed-line network before getting through to the overseas destination.

Phones connected to overseas networks are more difficult if not impossible for authorities to track.

Security sources told The Weekend Australian there was concern the phones were predominantly being sold to young Muslim Somalis who were vulnerable to extremist messages.

“The phones are able to receive and send all sorts of videos, including radical sermons, assassinations and beheadings of infidels by Islamic terrorists,” a security source said.

Australian Federal Police Association chief executive Jim Torr said the AFP was aware that criminals were increasingly using phones connected to overseas networks.

“And it’s not just your profit-motivated criminals who will use this (technology), it’s also terrorists who will use mobile phones in particular, so it’s certainly a big deal,” Mr Torr said.

It is understood that Victorian authorities are looking at ways of involving telecommunications networks such as Telstra in the latest investigation through the Special Projects Unit, which has an agreement with networks entitling it to obtain call records.

Among the alleged distribution points is the Eight Black prayer centre in North Melbourne. The centre has been the subject of a federal police investigation, Operation Rochester, as well as investigations by Victorian police and ASIO, over the past two years after allegations that radical sermons had been preached at the prayer hall and young Somalis attending the centre had returned to join Islamic jihad in their homeland. The investigations are ongoing.

Islamic leaders at Eight Black, including senior imam Sheik al-Somali, have rejected accusations that the prayer centre is a proponent of radical Islam.

Agents believe the primary seller of the phones is a Somali community member from Melbourne’s northern suburbs. They said they were unaware of how many phones were in circulation.

In a sign of his concern, the Prime Minister tried playing the statesman yesterday, making a weighty speech about British citizenship that was full of such noble phrases as “shared values” and “rights matched with responsibilities”.

But nowhere in his lecture did Brown make any mention of the size of the population flood looming over our increasingly crowded island. It seems a careless omission given the stark warnings that the PM has received from his advisers.

Earlier this month, a little-noticed document published by Brown’s strategy unit made clear that the record numbers of arrivals seen in recent years is just the beginning.

“Over the next decade and beyond the population is projected to continue to grow at a faster rate than in the Eighties and early Nineties,” it said.

And it forecasts that the country’s population will rise by an extra seven million to 67 million, by 2020, driven largely by “people living longer and net migration”.

This population explosion is the chilling context for the Govern ment’s latest vow to “crack down” on border controls and ensure “managed migration”. And in the light of the expected influx, these measures to tighten up the process of applying for British citizenship seem woefully inadequate.

Not surprisingly, this article doesn’t let on that Islam could have anything to do with that, what with wife beating sanctioned in Qur’an 4:34, and in the sayings and example of Muhammad. He himself struck his child bride, Aisha, for following him out of the house without permission; her father, Abu Bakr, is recorded hitting her even after her marriage to Muhammad. And on the subject of leaving the home, Umdat al-Salik (Reliance of the Traveler) instructs:

The husband may forbid his wife to leave the home because of the hadith related by Bayhaqi that the Prophet … said: “It is not permissible for a woman who believes in Allah and the Last Day to allow someone into her husband’s house if he is opposed, or to go out if he is averse” (m10.4).

If women’s rights activists and would-be Muslim reformers truly wish to make a difference in combating domestic violence, they must confront passages such as these.
