The parents of 24,000 children in northern Pakistan refused to allow health workers to administer polio vaccinations last month, mostly due to rumours that the harmless vaccine was an American plot to sterilise innocent Muslim children.
The disinformation – spread by extremist clerics using mosque loudspeakers and illegal radio stations, and by word of mouth – has caused a sharp jump in polio cases in Pakistan and hit global efforts to eradicate the debilitating disease.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) recorded 39 cases of polio in Pakistan in 2006, up from 28 in 2005. The disease is concentrated in North-West Frontier Province, where 60% of the refusals were attributed to “religious reasons”.
“It was very striking. There was a lot of anti-American propaganda as well as some misconceptions about sterilisation,” said Dr Sarfaraz Afridi, a campaign manager with the WHO in Peshawar.

Taboo in Turkey
But there is one film that will encounter little competition for being the most important and stirring contribution to the culture of reminiscence. It deals with the Turkish genocide of the Armenians, a topic that is still considered taboo in Turkey. Indeed, sentiments on the issue are so strong that representatives of the Turkish government are still trying to convince others to avoid the topic as well. Last week, for example, Turkish Foreign Minister Abdullah Gül made it clear that relations between his country and the United States could be seriously jeopardized by a resolution proposed in the US Congress that would officially condemn the 1915 genocide committed by the Turks.
“If this resolution is approved,” Gül threatened representatives of the Bush administration, which is seeking a strategic partnership with Turkey, “why should we continue to support one another?”
Close to a century after the Armenian genocide, the issue remains explosive. When Turkish novelist and Nobel laureate Orhan Pamuk had the courage to write about the genocide, he was promptly taken to court by ultra-nationalists. After the murder of Armenian-Turkish journalist Hrant Dink, Pamuk, fearing for his own life, fled abroad.
White House opens doors to Iraq refugees

WASHINGTON (AFP) – The United States plans to take in some 7,000 Iraqi refugees by October, more than a tenfold increase in the number of Iraqi asylum seekers admitted since the 2003 invasion that toppled Saddam Hussein, a senior US official said.
Washington had been under fire for its response to the mounting refugee crisis which has seen two million Iraqis flee their war-ravaged nation and another nearly two million displaced inside the country.
State Department spokesman Sean McCormack revealed the decision to allow another 7,000 Iraqis into the United States after Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice discussed the crisis here with Antonio Guterres, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.
McCormack described the figure of 7,000 as a “target” and not a ceiling for the number of Iraqis who will be allowed into the country.

Salt Lake City Killer Was a Muslim: Don’t say I told you so…

The media did everything they could to avoid mentioning it, but it’s confirmed today that the mass murderer who terrorized a mall in Salt Lake City was a Bosnian Muslim:
Police said Sulaiman Talovic had a juvenile record of only four minor offenses. None of his arrests were for violent crimes.
The man had lived at a house with his mother and three younger sisters near the Utah State Fairpark. Neither his mother nor his sisters would answer the door or respond to phone calls Tuesday, although a person inside would pick up the phone and then quickly hang up.
Ajka Omerovic, who said she was Talovic’s aunt, visited the home Tuesday afternoon. She told the Deseret Morning News that Talovic had been “a good boy.” She said the family are Muslims from Bosnia who had lived in the vicinity of Sarajevo.

We must think about the root causes of such a desperate act. If the US (Clinton) hadn’t interfered with the normal cultural practices of the Balkans by stopping the Serbs’ ethnic cleansing of Bosnia, this disturbed young man would never have ended up in Salt Lake City living on the public purse.

The FBI has no evidence that political terrorism played a role in Monday’s killing spree at Trolley Square.
Patrick Kiernan, a special agent with the FBI in Salt Lake City, said Wednesday that the bureau is trying to help police determine why Talovic killed five people. As part of that effort, agents have looked into whether religion or terrorism were factors.
“We’re working closely with the Salt Lake P.D. and we’re obviously aware that that [terrorism] is a potential issue out there,” Kiernan said. “But at this point there is nothing that is leading us down this road.”
The killer, 18-year-old Sulejman Talovic is a Bosnian immigrant, whose family came to the United States in the late 1990s as refugees from the Bosnian War.
Sulejman is a common ethnic Muslim name, originating in the Ottoman Empire, which once dominated what is now Bosnia-Herzegovina.

TALIBAN fighters used children as human shields to flee heavy fighting this week during an operation by foreign and Afghan forces to clear rebels from around a key hydrolectric dam, NATO said today.
The Taliban have used human shields before, but never children, local residents say.
The fighting occurred during Operation Kryptonite on Monday, an offensive to clear insurgents from the Kajaki Dam area in southern Helmand province to allow repairs to its power plants and the installation of extra capacity.
“During this action … Taliban extremists resorted to the use of human shields. Specifically, using local Afghan children to cover as they escaped out of the area,” Colonel Tom Collins, a spokesman for the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said in Kabul.
NATO and foreign forces ran into heavy small arms and rocket-propelled grenade fire during the clash, but suffered no casualties, Col Collins said.
The fighting occurred in an area where 700 mainly foreign fighters, including Chechens, Pakistanis and Uzbeks, arrived from Pakistan this week to reinforce Taliban guerrillas targeting the dam, according to local officials.
Earler today, NATO said it had killed a Taliban leader in a pre-dawn airstrike between the dam and the nearby town of Musa Qala, to the west, which the rebels have held for 13 days.
NATO said there were no civilian casualties, but local tribal leader Haji Sultan said several villagers were killed.
Helmand Governor Asadullah Wafa would not comment.
The Kajaki dam has seen major fighting in recent weeks between the Taliban and NATO forces, mainly British and Dutch.
NATO-led forces have been conducting operations in the area for several months to allow reconstruction on the dam and the power transmission lines to boost output, after fighting halted repair and development work last year.
The Taliban cannot destroy the dam, which would also flood a large area of the Helmand Valley, but its tactics are aimed at making it too unsafe for work to go ahead.
Yesterday, two Afghan army officers and and a police officer were killed in a joint attack with NATO forces on a bomb-making operation in southern Uruzgan province, just to the north of Musa Qala and Kajaki.
Sadr bloc denies he’s fled to Iran

BAGHDAD (AFP) – Aides to radical Iraqi cleric Moqtada al-Sadr have denied reported allegations by US intelligence officials that the Shiite leader has fled to Iran.
Nassar al-Rubaie said Sadr was “still inside Iraq and working normally” but would not say exactly where.
Bassem al-Aathari, an official at Sadr’s office in Najaf, south of Baghdad, said the cleric was still in the Shiite holy city and that if he was to travel abroad it would be announced as it had been before.
Earlier, US media had reported that the firebrand anti-American cleric had fled to Tehran fearing that his house could could bombed by US forces as part of a stepped up plan for ending sectarian violence in Iraq.
“It’s ridiculous. It’s nothing,” Rubaie told AFP in Baghdad.
“If the US army already in Iraq is incapable of resisting Sadr, what difference would 20,000 reinforcements make?” he demanded.

Terror Attack Takes Aim at Civilians in Lebanon
Today’s attack took place in the village of Ein Alaq, just south of the town of Bikfaya, some 30 miles northeast of the Lebanese capital.

BEIRUT, Lebanon, Feb. 13 — A day before Lebanon prepared to mark the second anniversary of the assassination of its former prime minister, Rafik Hariri, three people were killed Tuesday and 19 others seriously wounded when two buses were bombed as they ferried passengers to work, to shop and to bible study classes.
For a country so fragile and on edge because of its internal political struggles, the bombers managed to escalate tensions, not by attacking government ministers or the politically outspoken. Instead, the targets were passengers who paid the equivalent of about 80 cents to pile into the mini-buses for the half-hour ride to Beirut.
