TEAR gas has been used to repel protesters during a second day of demonstrations in Jakarta as fallout continues over revelations Australian spies tapped the phone of Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.
Hundreds of members from various hardline Islamic groups clashed with police in front of the Australian embassy on Friday, some calling for blood, in response to the spying scandal which has caused relations between Canberra and Jakarta to sink to their lowest level since the East Timor crisis in 1999.
Police armed with riot shields used canes to beat back the protesters who stormed towards the Australian compound, amid violent scenes and calls for the Australian ambassador to be expelled from Indonesia.
At one point, tear gas was used to repel the protesters, from the Islamic Defenders Front, who converged on the embassy in their hundreds after Friday prayers.

Muslim community leader Keysar Trad has been ordered to repay Alan Jones $10,000 after the broadcaster was granted the right to appeal against a tribunal decision Mr Jones had incited hatred of Lebanese Muslims.
The NSW Administrative Decisions Tribunal found in 2009 that Jones had “incited hatred, serious contempt and severe ridicule of Lebanese Muslims” through comments made on air in April 2005.
The tribunal awarded $10,000 in damages to Mr Trad, ordered the talkback host make a public apology and directed Jones’ employer, Harbour Radio, to conduct a “critical review of its policies and practices on racial vilification” and staff training in such matters.
Jones has since launched two attempts to overturn that decision and on Wednesday the NSW Supreme Court ordered that his appeal be allowed.
The court set aside a decision made by the tribunal in October last year to dismiss an appeal and also ordered that Mr Trad repay the $10,000.
Turkish President Abdullah Gul called on Muslim countries to fight against Islamophobia during his address on Tuesday at the 29th session of the COMCEC held in Istanbul.
“Islamophobia remains a critical problem, which instigates unsubstantial prejudices against our region and Muslims. Terror plays a role in the persistence of such problems. We have to combat any form of deviation playing into the hands of people who equate terrorism with Islam, the religion of love, tolerance and conciliation,” Gul said during his inaugural address.
COMCEC, which is the main multilateral economic and commercial cooperation platform of the Muslim world, convenes annually at a ministerial level in Istanbul, Turkey under the chairmanship of the President of Turkey. So far, it has regularly convened 28 sessions.
“Playing a more active role in the solution of global problems such as climate change, poverty, the fight against organized crime, immigration, radicalism, narcotics and human trafficking will certainly introduce new economic and commercial opportunities for Muslim countries,” Gul emphasized.  (Bulletin)
