It is about the only frank and sane paragraph in the entire piece, but comes like rain after a drought from the Sydney Morning Herald’s Paul McGeough:

A professor of journalism at the American University in Dubai, Bahrani wanted to know why – if Muslims in London, Paris and elsewhere were marching in protest at Israel’s war on Gaza – they were not protesting against the Islamic State massacres of Yazidis, Christians and their fellow Muslims in Iraq and Syria.

Of course, since McGeough is the author, excuses are made, the West criticised and Islam declared innocent of a charge barely spelled out. Yet that one paragraph stays as a reproach – and a warning.

It is more than six years since the then Archbishop of Canterbury gave what history will surely understand to be one of the most destructive speeches in modern Britain. The contents of Rowan Williams’s 2008 speech talked of allowing a place for competing religious demands, including sharia law, in a multi-faith society. The next day he clarified matters. In an interview with the BBC, he said there would “inevitably” be a place for sharia law in Britain and that (more importantly) the idea of there being “one law for all” in a country such as Britain seemed to him “dangerous.”

THE HAGUE, Tuesday

The court in The Hague is busy preparing the criminal trial against Geert Wilders, although the judicial authorities have not yet decided to prosecute him. The court administration wants to prevent chaos, like four years ago in Amsterdam.

It is generally expected that the judicial authorities will decide later this month whether the PVV leader will be prosecuted for his statement about “fewer Moroccans” during an election meeting in a pub in The Hague. Yesterday, a spokeswoman for the public prosecutor in The Hague refused to say on which date the decision to prosecute will be taken, but internally it has been rumored for some time that one aims for September.

Wilders’ offending statement, in which he asked his PVV-supporters “Do you want more or fewer Moroccans?” caused a lot of protest last March. The supporters chanted sixteen times “Less! Less! Less!” Throughout the country, more than five thousand complaints were made against Wilders for group defamation, discrimination and incitement to hatred. In addition, a few tens of thousands reports of discrimination were made through the website of the police.

In preparation of the possible prosecution of the PVV leader the court in The Hague has appointed two judges to assist the media during the trial: Elianne van Rens and Hubert Nijman.

This article was published today on the frontpage of the Dutch newspaper, De Telegraaf.

The best way for him to learn it is when a halal butcher chops his head off.

September 3 – The Australian National Imams Council rushes out a statement condemning … Tony Abbott:

The Australian National Imams Council (ANIC), as stated previously, believes that one of the main causative factor for local radicalisation in the west has been the western governments’ military involvement in the Middle East. The support of unjust, dictatorial regimes as well as unilateral military aggression based on duplicitous foreign policy positions has only aggravated the state of global fear and violence.

If the Australian government is serious about reducing the terror threat locally, then it must review its foreign policy decisions with regard to this region. It is on this basis that His Eminence, Professor Ibrahim Abu Mohamed, Grand Mufti of Australia and ANIC, opposes the government’s current decision to transport and provide weapons to the Kurdish forces in Iraq.

The decision by the government, given the complexities present in Iraq, is confounded by the … likelihood of mission creep given the government has already foreshadowed the possibility of deploying SAS soldiers and fighter jets…

The Government will be imputed for further radicalization locally if it continues military intervention in the middle East.

The timing, once again, is shameful. The attacks on Abbott are ludicrous. Blaming the West for jihadist terrorism is deceitful. Criticising the West more than the terrorists is alarming. And the repeated warnings that we must change our policies in the Middle East or face more terrorism at home are deeply sinister.

The time is fast approaching – or here already – when we must conclude it is futile to keep urging Muslim leaders to make a stand against jihadism. The truth may well be that that Islam – or these leaders’ constituents – give them no freedom to condemn what threatens the rest of us.

I think we need to find better words than ‘terrorist’ and ‘terrorism’ because, to me, this implies a very one-sided view of the world. Often our forces could be seen by Iraqi civilians as being terrorists. ‘Terrorist’ is a word that is very commonly used against us by those same people in Iraq who have been radicalised – anything that creates terror is, by definition, terrorism. We use that word because it is a very simple word to use and it demonises people.
