Supporters of former Jakarta governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama celebrating his release from prison last Thursday. Mr Basuki is being accused of making the Muslim woman he plans to marry commit apostasy.

Former Jakarta governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, who was released from prison just last week after serving a two-year sentence for blaspheming Islam, is now being attacked by critics over another hot-button issue.

The Chinese-Christian politician is being criticised on social media by Muslims, who say he is making the Muslim woman he plans to marry commit apostasy.

Other Muslims, however, have defended Mr Basuki, arguing that no one should meddle with his personal life, and that everyone has the right to follow any religion.

Mr Basuki, 52, popularly known as Ahok, has said he plans to remarry. The bride-to-be – who comes from a Javanese Muslim family – is Ms Puput Nastiti Devi, 21, who used to be a policewoman and aide to Mr Basuki’s former wife.

Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton has lashed the UNHCR for branding Australia’s boat turnback policy as dangerous and ineffective, suggesting the global body did not “deal in the real world”.

The UN refugee agency’s Indonesia chief, Thomas Vargas, warned in The Australian today that boat turnbacks left “other countries to deal with the situation” and warned it was “ultimately not going to work”.

Bill Shorten has also maintained Labor’s support for boat turnbacks in the face of opposition in previous years from members of his frontbench, including deputy Tanya Plibersek and former leadership rival Anthony Albanese.

An ugly stand-off, witnessed by the Herald Sun at the station at about 2.20pm, has been described as symbolic of the current friction in the community.

It is understood the African-Australians who were challenged protested that they were innocent during the potentially dangerous incident, which did not erupt into violence.

This makes sense only when you understand the UN’s definition of “work” is to let boats come:

And how would we help the hundreds who drown on the way?

The UN refugee agency’s Indonesia chief, Thomas Vargas, told The Australian that turn-back policies such as those used by Australia’s Border Force to prevent boatloads of asylum-seekers reaching Australia “just don’t work”. “If you turn someone back or push them away, you risk pushing them into harm’s way — and that’s what is so terrible about these types of policies — rather than rescuing them, bringing them to safety and then figuring out how best they can be helped,” Mr Vargas said.

“One country might say ‘Yes, it’s working for us’, but that leaves other countries to deal with the situation and inevitably we are all in this together.”

Indonesians involved in the people-smuggling trade have told The Australian they are closely monitoring federal election campaigning and say they are ready to kickstart their trade if a new government weakens the nation’s tough border policies. Indonesian authorities have said they, too, are following the debate and bracing for a possible change in policy that could lead to a resumption of boats.

The Weekend Australian reported on Saturday that a boat carrying up to 200 asylum-seekers had left India this month and could be headed for New Zealand but may plan stops in Indonesia or Malaysia.
