Jakarta, 3 March (AKI/Jakarta Post) – The Indonesian government’s plans to tighten procedures for polygamous marriages and ban unregistered and contractual marriages has sparked controversy across the country. 

Some Indonesians believe the government should not interfere in the private lives of its citizens, while others said the plan should be supplemented with a revision of Indonesia’s 1974 marriage law.

Ministers decided not to force through plans to cut benefits to hundreds of polygamous families in the UK after officials advised that the move would be “too politically sensitive.”

Internal documents obtained by The Independent on Sunday reveal that ministers from four departments ordered an “urgent review” of the position of up to 1,000 men with “multiple wives”, amid complaints that they were claiming millions in benefits.

Muslim Baby Boom? Polygamy? Warsi Blames The Infidels…

FEARS of an Islamic baby boom have grown after it was revealed the Government is not stopping Muslim men from having more than one wife.

Warsi: “what Britain needs is a polygamy police unit…”

Baroness Warsi, Shadow Minister for Community Cohesion, lifted the lid on the polygamy problem by accusing Downing Street of being afraid to offend Muslims.

She said the Government was ignoring the issue of multiple wives because of “cultural sensitivity”.

And she said the result is a boom in the number of Muslim women forced to take part in polygamous marriages. It is also allowing Muslim men to have children with several women at the same time.

Baroness Warsi, 37, said: “There has to be a culture change and that has to be brought about by policy-makers taking a clear stance on this issue, saying that in this country, one married man is allowed to marry one woman. And that must be the way for everyone who lives in this country.

“There has been a failure on the part of policy makers to respond to this situation.

“Some of it has been done in the name of cultural sensitivity and we’ve just avoided either discussing or dealing with this matter head-on.”

Polygamy is illegal under UK law but religious marriages are not registered and so are not legally valid.

This opens the door for a Muslim man to marry his first wife in a civil ceremony and then marry someone else in a religious one.  Baroness Warsi urged the Government to consider the mandatory registration of all religious marriages to stop men in Britain marrying more than one woman.

And Stephen Green, of campaign group Christian Voice, said: “If this is going on then the Government should not be afraid of offending people in that community.”

But her remarks provoked an angry backlash from some Islamic experts last night.

Manzoor Moghal, chairman of the Muslim Forum, said the Government should not interfere.

He said: “Why would you not allow Muslims to conduct their affairs in their cultural, religious framework, without interference from the state? Why should we take them to task for having a second, third and a fourth nikah [marriage] which is compatible with their religion?”

Answer: Because WE, THE INFIDEL HOST SOCIETY ARE PAYING FOR IT with our taxes!  Because Muslims use and abuse women to outbreed the infidel host society with the intention to destroy us!

A Ministry of Justice spokesman denied that polygamy was being ignored by the Government and insisted the practice was illegal in Britain.

But he added: “It is not the role of government to take a position on the rites, beliefs or practices of any particular religious faith, other than where these give rise to conflict with the common law.”

* Comment:  Mate, this is about your existence. You better start defending yourself or you’ll be gone along with your common law and your tolerance!

“Is is not obligatory to ask permission from the first wife and it’s not one of the requirements that the first wife gives her permission,” writes the imam to his followers.  “It is recommended that those who wish to marry more women to carefully think it over and to thoroughly study this topic.  This is namely because those who want to marry more women most often just think of their physical satisfaction and not of the other duties that are related to it.”

Fawaz gives the Muslims more advice.  But he doesn’t mention at all the ban on bigamy or polygamy in the Netherlands.  VVD parliament member Henk Kamp responded with much displeasure.  “People can keep the Islamic rules as long as they fit within Dutch law.”

European Cultural Collapse Update: “Netherlands Recognizes Polygamous Muslim Marriages,” from NIS News, August 12 (via DW):

ROTTERDAM, 12/08/08 – Although polygamy is banned in the Netherlands, the marriages of Muslims who have several wives are recognised by Dutch authorities.Registrars in the major cities, in particular, record dozens of bigamous or polygamous marriages per year. These marriages are prohibited and an offence in the Netherlands. However, polygamous marriages that take place in countries where more than one wife is permitted, such as Morocco, are accepted, newspaper NRC Handelsblad reports.

If immigrants with several wives settle in the Netherlands, the local authorities register all the marriages. However, the Central Bureau for Statistics (CBS), where all marriages are registered nationally, removes these bigamous or polygamous marriages from its files, on the assumption that administrative errors have occurred. As a result, it is not known how common the phenomenon is in the Netherlands.

Amsterdam city council has informed the CBS that the marriages are not a mistake. “We will now investigate whether this can be regarded as a trend that was previously not recognised. If this is the case, it is out task to report this,” CBS researcher Jan Latten explained in NRC Handelsblad.

“At present, it is not included in our statistics,” Latten pointed out. “In the same way, we delete marriages involving fourteen-year-olds. A man with two wives just cannot exist by law.”

Spokesman T. Verhoeven of the Rotterdam city council disclosed that polygamous marriages are registered almost every week. “They are simply acknowledged. It is important for us to check that the documents are authentic and that the husband does not have Dutch nationality.” Otherwise the construction is illegal, Verhoeven explained….
