Australia: Muslims argue for Sharia in the name of multiculturalism
Told ya it was just starting.
The Australian Federation of Islamic Councils says “Muslims in Australia should accept the Australian values, and Australia should provide a ‘public sphere’ for Muslims to practise their belief. It takes two to tango.”
Cute, but they are acting as though they are just looking for reciprocity when their demand for Sharia is one without comparison for any other group that has settled in Australia. In asking for “legal pluralism,” they want a selective opt-out clause on being Australian.
They dance around the reasons for concern about Sharia. It is supremacist, totalitarian, and not designed for selective implementation: supposedly divine laws do not lend themselves to compartmentalization. Then, of course, there is the actual content of the law, and the observable impact of Sharia everywhere else it has gained strength: tolerance goes down, persecution goes up. Women’s rights decrease, and abusive and invasive enforcement increase. Sharia has never resulted in a free society by Western standards of human rights, because it is not designed to do so. In a submission to a federal inquiry into multiculturalism, the Australian Federation of Islamic Councils said Muslims were forced to live in enclaves near Islamic schools, mosques and halal food outlets.
Just to create a bit of confusion for the nutroots, make it sound as if the Jews  were on board:
“The Government should invest in expanding services like halal and kosher meat and food outlets as well as faith-based schools,” it said.
”If the Government and politicians cannot recognise this as essential, it should no longer accuse the Australian Muslim community of intentionally living in enclaves.” (234 comments on Bolt)
But the Jews are not buying any:
the Executive Council of Australian Jewry has told a Federal Parliament committee on migration that Australia must learn from the failed “anything goes” model of multiculturalism in Europe.
It wants migrants put on probation to enable a “confident assessment of their acceptance of Australian values and laws before granting full citizenship”. (Here’s more)

I’m not convinced. Muslims have never integrated or assimilated in any place where they have settled in the dar ul harb.
The Australian Government is holding a national inquiry into multiculturalism.  The Australian newspaper yesterday reported that the Australian Federation of Islamic Councils has requested the introduction of Sharia law under the umbrella of multiculuralism (the AFIC submission can be downloaded here: other submissions are available here). However, Australian Attorney-General, Robert McClelland has stated that:
“Sharia law has no place in the Australian legal system.”
“As our citizenship pledge makes clear, coming to Australia means obeying Australian laws and upholding Australian values.” Â (More)
