Biased CNN ‘Warriors’ crosses the line

By Jonathan Tobin/JWR

“Objective” journalist Amanpour donning Muslim head covering

Critics of religion like to claim that the source of most of the world’s ills can be traced to believers who wage wars in the name of their distorted fanatic faiths. Indeed, this thesis has led to a spate of new books advocating atheism and deriding religion in the past year.

Needless to say, critics of this trend have pointed out that the vast majority of the deaths incurred by conflicts in history’s bloodiest century — the twentieth — were caused by fanatical non-believers in traditional faiths in the name of their Communist, Maoist and Nazi faiths.

But it must be admitted that violent religious extremists are, at this moment in time, the primary threat to the peace of the world. The only problem with this unpleasant fact is that the opprobrium rightly aimed at the perpetrators of this faith-based violence cannot be neatly distributed across the board to practitioners of the three major monotheistic religions.

Though present-day Jews and Christians are not all saints, there is no getting around the fact that neither of those religions has sprouted a contemporary movement aimed at world domination to be achieved by terror and war. That honor is reserved for the Muslim faith, among whose adherents Islamist terror movements have found a home in the mainstream of its culture.

Not all Muslims are Islamists. Most American Muslims are nothing of the kind. But the notion that supporters of Al Qaeda, Hezbollah, Hamas, Islamic Jihad and other assorted anti-Western and anti-Jewish terror movements are a tiny minority in the Arab and Muslim world is a delusion.

But in this age of political correctness, to single out one group for the sins of a large number of its members is considered unfair and perhaps even racist. So, instead, we are asked to pretend that there is an intrinsic connection or even symmetry between Christian, Jewish and Muslim extremists.

That was exactly the premise of a widely heralded three-part series on CNN last week. Titled “G-d’s Holy Warriors,” and fronted by famed international correspondent Christiane Amanpour, it was a tryptich across the globe to highlight the danger from Jewish, Muslim and Christian extremists who are all given the same treatment and air-time in the guise of even-handedness.

Thus, by its very structure of equating the three different situations, the series was nothing short of a brazen lie.

Why is CNN so perverted?

Christiane vs. Christians and Jews
By Phyllis Chesler

Not ONLY CNN, Fox also:

In November of 2005, Fox’s O’Reilly showed live footage of the French Intifada as it raged in Paris. According to WorldNetDaily, Saudi billionaire Prince al-Waleed bin Talal, (aka Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal Bin AbdulAziz AlSaud), who owns 5-6% of the Fox News Channel, personally called Rupert Murdoch and asked him to change the offensive (but accurate) caption: “Muslim Riots” to the less offensive (and less accurate) “Civil Riots.” Within thirty minutes, the Prince had his way.

Our fine Saudi prince also owns shares in Times-Warner/AOL/CNN, which he first acquired in 2002. According to Forbes, the London Guardian, and other media outlets, in 2002 the Prince “claimed to own 1.4 billion in AOL stock…in 2003 he bought another 450 million of AOL stock.” God knows what he owns now. (Yes, he’s the very Prince whom Presidential hopeful Rudy Guiliani humiliated when he refused to accept his ten million dollar donation for humanitarian aid immediately following 9/11).

To paraphrase New York Post columnist Cindy Adams: Only in America kids, only in America.

Right. ‘All religions are equally bad’ and ‘one man’s freedom fighter is another mans terrorist’ ends up becoming enemy propaganda, which is used against our own interest and people, like here:

Face-to-face with top Hamas leader in secret location

Glorifying Terrorism: By Cal Perry

DAMASCUS, Syria (CNN) –– Sitting in a room with the top Hamas leader — a man Israel would prefer dead — is not an easy feeling, knowing that at any second a missile could shatter the building, killing everyone inside, myself included.

And, of course, it is no surprise why Israel has Khaled Meshaal at the top of its hit list. He is known to have ordered bombings that have targeted Israeli civilians, blowing up cafés, markets and malls across Israel.

CNN senior correspondent Nic Robertson and I recently sat down with Meshaal in a secret Hamas “safe house” in the middle of Damascus. Hamas security guards were all around, their automatic rifles draped over their shoulders. The walls were adorned with the pictures of Hamas members who have carried out suicide bombings that have killed hundreds of Israelis.

Washington Post Wankers Bow To Their New Islamic Overlords:

The Washington Post and several other newspapers decided not to run a new Opus comic strip by Berkeley Breathed, because it mocked radical Islam.

As always, everyone involved is talking about “sensitivity,” when the real motivation behind this craven incident of pre-emptive self-censorship is very obviously fear.

Here are the WaPo cartoons that you wouldn’t get to see otherwise

Pathetic capitulation to Islam. Staggering. The news does not run the news: it cooks the news. The cartoon jihad worked in ways little imagined last year.

Washington Post, Other Newspapers Won’t Run ‘Opus’ Cartoon Mocking Radical Islam FOX

A popular comic strip that poked fun at the Rev. Jerry Falwell without incident one week ago was deemed too controversial to run over the weekend because this time it took a humorous swipe at Muslim fundamentalists.

The Washington Post and several other newspapers around the country did not run Sunday’s installment of Berkeley Breathed’s “Opus,” in which the spiritual fad-seeking character Lola Granola appears in a headscarf and explains to her boyfriend, Steve, why she wants to become a radical Islamist.

Sources told that the strips were shown to Muslim staffers at The Washington Post to gauge their reaction, and they responded “emotionally” to the depiction of a woman dressed in traditional Muslim garb and espousing conservative Islamic views.

Pakistan’s Islamist press calls for jihad

Praveen Swami / The Hindu

Fresh demands for violence against India escalated weeks before Hyderabad bombings

“Musharraf’s regime should discard the pro-U.S. policy”

“Make jihad, martyrdom part of the curriculum”

NEW DELHI: Pakistan’s Islamist media published a series of explicit calls for violence against India in the six weeks before the Hyderabad bombings — a development that analysts believe reflects the weakening of General Pervez Musharraf’s regime, and raises fears of a renewed wave of terror strikes.

In an editorial published in the Jamaat-e-Islami-affiliated Daily Jasarat’s August 19 Friday supplement, the newspaper demanded that the “slogan of jihad should reverberate in every nook and corner of Pakistan. If Pakistan allows jihadis to infiltrate into India then Kashmir could be liberated in six months.”

“Within a couple of years,” the newspaper asserted, “the rest of the territories of India could be conquered as well, and we can regain our lost glory. We can bring back the era of Mughal rule. We can once again subjugate the Hindus like our forefathers.”

Lashkar-e-Taiba chief Hafiz Mohammad Saeed, in turn, used the July 20 rape and murder of north Kashmir teenager to call for escalated violence. “The Indian Army,” he wrote in July 22 article published on the terror group’s website,is raping the daughters of Islam. How can we tolerate this? We will kill every single soldier of the Indian Army and take revenge for the honour of our sisters. Let India deploy more soldiers in Kashmir so that our mujahideen have more pigs to hunt.”

According to Islamist publications, these calls for violence are legitimised by what they characterise as a global war against Islam and Pakistan. “India and other foreign powers,” Saeed told a congregation at Lahore’s al-Qadsia mosque on July 20, “are involved in the recent spate of bomb blasts in Pakistan. Only India could be behind the recent attacks because only a Hindu could do it. No Muslim can think of shedding the blood of another Muslim.”

The War Within

Much of the Islamist press’ ire is focussed on Pakistan’s own establishment — and the figure of President Pervez Musharraf.

Writing in the July 30 edition of the Daily Jasarat, which has an estimated circulation of 50,000, Lashkar deputy chief Abdul Rahman Makki demanded that General Musharraf’s regime “discard the pro-United States policy th at has weakened the Kashmir cause. It is time to adopt a pro-jihad and pro-jihadi policy. You give us the country for six months and we will conquer Kashmir. We will also force the Americans out from Afghanistan.”

In another attack on General Musharraf, published on the Lashkar website on August 8, Saeed asserted that “Muslim rulers have disappointed the Ummah [worldwide Muslim community]. It is time to wage jihad against them. They are not Muslims. They are the agents of Jews.”

However, Saeed was careful not to endorse pro-democracy protests. “The answer is not democracy,” he wrote. “The answer is the caliphate.” He followed this up with an appeal to Pakistan’s military establishment: “Remember, O foolish rulers, the United States is not going to help you. Jihadis are your true friends.”

Mushi: Not quite ready for all out jihad yet…

Soon after, Makki launched an even more acidic attack on General Musharraf at the Madrassa Ayesha, near Rawalpindi. Pakistan, he asserted, “is ruled by Ahmadis at present” — a reference to a heterodox Muslim sect officially proscribed in Pakistan, and long subject to persecution by Islamists. “Most of the top Generals and bureaucrats,” he continued, “are Ahmadi.”

In order to counter this pernicious influence, Makki called for “jihad and martyrdom to be made part of the curriculum. They should be taught in textbooks at school, college and university levels.”

Several key members of the Musharraf regime have also been singled out for attack in the Islamist press. In an August 12 editorial, the Nawa-i-Waqt, which is estimated to sell some 2,00,000 copies daily, railed against Education Min ister General Javed Ashraf Qazi for the publication of a Grade II school textbook which omitted Jammu and Kashmir from a map of Pakistan. “The Education Minister,” it stated, “is a Jewish agent.”

One has to shave the scrotum and the hair around it as well.

By hind parts is meant the circle around the anus, as it is very likely that faeces could get attached to any hair present there. (Raddul Muhtaar Vol.2 Pg.481-H.M.Saeed, Tahtaawi alal Maraaqi Pg.527-Ilmiyyah, Fathul Bari Vol.10 Pg.343)

“In a battle between flaming fundamentalists and mute moderates, who do you think is going to win”? Irshad Manji Muslim writer

As we have predicted in the past, the stepping down of radical Hilaly as Mufti of Australia and his replacement by another imam who would be just as radical but who would attempt to cover the sinews of his spiritual radicalism under the garments of moderation, has just happened. The selection by the Australian Council of Imams of the elderly and scholarly Sheikh Fehmi Naji el-Imam of the Preston Mosque to replace Hilaly as Mufti of Australasia, is no less than an attempt by the politically minded advisers of the Australian Council of Imams to cozen and dupe the Australian public that they were substituting a moderate cleric in the person of Sheikh Naji for the radical Hilaly.

A not so moderate sheik Fehmi Naji

But let us see whether our prejudgment of the new Mufti is too hasty and facile by looking at the past conduct and statements of Sheikh Naji. Six years now since the twin towers bombing and all the objective evidence who was behind the attack, the Sheikh still refuses to acknowledge that Osama bin Laden was behind it. His reply is that he has heard people saying that al Qaeda were the perpetrator but he himself has not seeing the evidence. Now the Sheikh is reputed to be a scholarly and intelligent man and one would expect of him to use the latter two qualities in search of the truth. If six years after the event, he still cannot make up his intelligent mind, despite the resounding evidence that is also verified by the statements of bin Laden himself that al Qaeda was the deadly agent, as to the real perpetrator of that dastardly action, then people must come to the conclusion not that the Sheikh does not have the truth in his hands but that he hides it. And the reason why he hides it is that he does not want to alienate himself both from other imams, who also believe that bin Laden was not behind the attack, and of the wider Muslim community which also believes likewise, after hearing their clerics for so long repudiating that the attack was engendered by al Qaeda.

Hence the important question is not what Sheikh Naji truly believes about 9/11 but what he truly represents. That a great number of Muslims, after being indoctrinated for so many years by their radical imams about the evils of the West and the Great Satan America have been also radicalized, and it’s exactly this fundamentalist stratum that the Sheikh represents. That there is a majority of fledgling radical Muslims in our midst has been lucidly illustrated by the recently religiously arrogant statements of the head of the Supreme Islamic Shia Council of Australia, Kamal Mousselmani, as reported in the Australian, on June 23-24, 2007. He said, his entire of 30,000 Shi’ites in Australia were avid [my emphasis] supporters of Hezbollah (Party of God) and haters of Israel, considered Hezbollah to be a “resistance group” not a terrorist organization. He continued, “Shia in Australia considers Israel a terrorist organization and also view those who support Israel in the same light”. And with the superciliousness of a fanatic who speaks in the name of God, he said to the reporters attending his press conference, “put those words down, we are not afraid to say that”.

Certainly there is a minority of moderate Muslims within their community but who would dare to swim against the stream of such torrential river of radicalism? This is why the expectation by some civil libertarians and politicians that moderate Muslims can oust the radicals from their position of power and influence, is completely unrealistic at least in the short term. And in “the long term we will all be dead”, to quote John Maynard Keynes.

Furthermore, Sheikh Naji’s record speaks for itself. He officially supported the application for residency of Abdul Nacer Benbrica, who presently awaits trial for alleged terrorist actions in Australia. Asked by a reporter if moderate Muslims should take a stronger stand against extremists, he ducked the question and answered that the media misrepresented the facts about Muslims. What he would say to those Muslims who wanted to go overseas and participate in jihad, he replied, “I don’t know what (the) circumstances outside (Australia) would be”. He also called for the removal of Hezbollah’s military arm from Australia’s proscribed list of terrorist organizations. And in a lame attempt to shift jihad in favor of Australia, not realizing that he was throwing a boomerang in the air, he said that Australian Muslims would participate in a jihad to “protect Australia from its enemies”. (m.e.) Presently Australia is fighting its enemies, extremist Muslims, in Iraq and Afghanistan; is the Sheikh going to send his holy warriors to these theatres of war as an outcome of his pledge to protect Australia? Lastly, asked in his press conference after his election as Mufti about the war in Iraq, he was promptly muzzled by his minders to articulate his views on the issue, pleading his ill-health (he had suffered a stroke), and was quickly whisked away from the tough-fisted questions of some reporters, his advisors replying that he will answer these questions another time.

Australia needs more ‘Rage Boyz…’

Hence, the Australian Council of Imams being too clever by half, not only have they picked a seemingly moderate imam to replace Hilaly, so he can pass muster in the eyes of the general community, but a frail one to boot. So whenever Sheikh Naji faced difficult questions of the media his minders would plead his ill-health, thus shielding him from giving an impromptu answer that could compromise his position as a moderate imam, and, also, exposing all those who elected him Mufti as being also avid representatives of the radicalism of their flock since they happen to be its sires.

The general public must not allow itself to be duped by this latest farce of the Muslim clerisy that they are willing and preparing to walk hand-in-hand with the Australian maiden, on the path of moderation, mutual respect, and peace, when their sermons are replete to the brim with the seeds of war against the infidels, the Jews, and the Great Satan, America.

Islam in the media – Sheik Fehmi

Sheik Fehmi Naji El-Imam is the mufti of Australia – the spiritual leader of Australias Muslims. He replaced Sheik Taj el-Din el-Hilaly as the mufti in June 2007.

When he was first appointed as mufti, some journalists asked some tough questions, questioning whether he was truly a moderate because of statements he had previously made: he didnt think Osama bin Laden was responsible for 9/11, he had praised Hezbollah, questioned the Iraq war, talked of Islam not allowing the killing of innocent people and had not distanced himself from the Melbourne imam Sheik Mohammed Omran. [sources below]

Last week Sheik Fehmi was featured in a Focus article/interview in the Sunday Herald Sun.

He encouraged Muslims to embrace Australian culture such as football, the beach and BBQs.

In the long article, Sheik Fehmi also talked of:

participation of Muslims in charity/voluntary work.

his arrival in Melbourne in 1951

his work in promoting a multi-faith and multicultural society

forming the first Islamic Society and building Victorias first mosque in Carlton North in 1957

becoming a full time imam in 1976

raising $1 million and building the large Preston Mosque. The mosque was completed with funds given by the Saudi Arabian government.*

In the interview, Sheik Fehmi speaks about the current terrorism trials and the nature of Islam:

While refusing to comment on the trial, he says terrorists should be dealt with under the law. Extremism has no place in Islam and people who take innocent lives in name of God are outside the fold of Islam, he says.

The extremists are not applying Islam. They call themselves Muslim, but they are not. Unfortunately, Islam is the most misunderstood religion at the moment amongst the people who live in Australia, maybe in the world.

But in Australia we are concerned that we live here to show Islam. Islam is tolerant. Islam is friendly. Islam is amicable. [emphasis added]

In this extract he again uses the word innocent – but in Islam an innocent person is one who is a Muslim. He also refers to in Australia which leads one to ask what about elsewhere?

The two articles from the Sunday Herald Sun follow along with articles documenting his previous statements and an interview with him that appeared on Compass.

A thoroughly modern muslim

Focus article, Sunday Herald Sun, Laurie Nowell, September 21, 2008.

AUSTRALIA’s top Muslim cleric is working to make sure the Islamic community embraces Australian culture. He tells Laurie Nowell how footy, barbecues and the beach have become multicultural glue.

SHEIK Fehmi Naji el-Imam, the spiritual leader of Australias 300,000 Muslims, has some surprising connections with footy. First, Sheik Fehmi thinks Muslims should embrace the game. He says so as an illustration of his belief that Muslims should be, and are, playing important roles in the wider community.

Second, he holds up Essendons recruit Bachar Houli, a Muslim, as a role model and pin-up boy of his multicultural philosophy. . . .

ElBaradei’s nuclear policy

Caroline Glick ruffles the feathers of Muhammad El Baradei, a man with serious mental baggage and a dubious agenda:

The UN’s International Atomic Energy Agency Director Muhammad ElBaradei is a man of dubious integrity. In 2005 he was vaunted to the heights of the international stratosphere when he received the Nobel Peace Prize. The Nobel committee extolled him for his “efforts to prevent nuclear energy from being used for military purposes.” Yet the facts indicate that the opposite is true. In his five-term tenure at the IAEA, ElBaradei has used his power to facilitate the proliferation of nuclear energy for military purposes. This he has done by working to prevent responsible states, like the United States, from taking action to prevent rogue states from pursuing nuclear weapons.

Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency Mohamed ElBaradei gestures as he attends the International Conference on Preventing Nuclear Catastrophe in Luxembourg.
Photo: AP , AP
Take Iraq for example. Right up to the US-British invasion of Iraq in March 2003, ElBaradei consistently maintained that he either couldn’t tell if Iraq was or was not pursuing nuclear weapons, or that he could see no evidence that Saddam Hussein was pursuing nuclear weapons. Indeed, just before the war, in an effort to scuttle US-British efforts to convince the UN Security Council to pass a new resolution approving the use of force against Saddam Hussein’s regime, ElBaradei reported to the Security Council that Iraq had abandoned its nuclear weapons program.

Then, in October 2004, with the still-same object of denying international legitimacy to US operations in Iraq, ElBaradei indirectly acknowledged his previous mendacity. He announced that since the invasion, equipment and materials that could be used to make nuclear bombs had disappeared from Iraq.

As he told it, in the aftermath of the US-led invasion, entire buildings related to Saddam’s nuclear weapons programs had been dismantled without any record being made of their contents. High precision “dual use” items such as milling machines, electron beam welders, and high strength aluminum all turned up missing.

Suddenly, the same ElBaradei who had insisted that Iraq had no nuclear program warned, “The disappearance of such equipment and materials may be of proliferation significance.” In the months ahead of the US-led invasion – months which ElBaradei spent buying time for Saddam by prolonging inspections that could be relied on to never end conclusively – then prime minister Ariel Sharon warned that satellite imagery had shown large truck convoys of suspicious materials moving from Iraq to Syria. Former IDF chief of General Staff Maj.-Gen. (res.) Moshe Ya’alon later reiterated Sharon’s claims.

US AIR FORCE intelligence operative David Gaubatz, who was sent to Iraq between March and July 2003 to search for nuclear, chemical and biological installations found four suspicious, reinforced, underground sites in southern Iraq around Nasiriyah and Basra. For reasons that remain to be examined, the US failed to inspect the sites. Medical examinations of Gaubatz and his team taken after their site visits showed that they had been exposed to high levels of radiation.

As Melanie Phillips reported in the British Spectator in April, Gaubatz stated that he subsequently learned from CIA, British and Iraqi intelligence agents that the sites were stripped by Iraqi, Syrian, and Russian operatives who moved their contents to Syria.

In a move exposing his own cynical refusal to take seriously the threat posed by nuclear proliferation, ElBaradei ended his October 2004 warning regarding the disappearance of the Iraqi nuclear equipment by asking anyone with information about the whereabouts of Iraq’s nuclear program to give his office a telephone call.

* The case of ElBaradei is not simply a case of incompetence and stupidity, but obviously one of putting the Fox in charge of guarding the chicken coop.

The Mothers of Dhimmitude: German “Nappy Headed Hoe’s” Perform in Teheran

* Music is ‘haram’ in Islam. All the more surprising that Iran would have a German orchestra perform in the Islamic republic, but not without insisting that the female musicians are properly hijabbed:

“The women are not used to playing in hijab. I am very glad that the women tried it and it was fine. What is most important is the music.”

* Selling everything for a song, eh?

The German orchestra brushed off the constraint of giving the concerts with their female players wearing Islamic headscarves, saying they had worn the garments during rehearsals in Germany in preparation.

German orchestra in Iran on landmark visit

From AFP via DW: A German orchestra arrived in Tehran on Monday, defying increasing political tensions to give the first performances in Iran by a full Western classical ensemble since the Islamic revolution in 1979.

The Osnabrueck Symphony Orchestra from northwestern Germany will play works by Beethoven, Brahms and Elgar in Tehran this week following a successful visit by the Tehran Symphony Orchestra to their town last year.

The German orchestra, whose female players will have to wear Islamic headscarves to obey Iran’s dress code, will be boosted by six Iranian musicians for the concerts.

The orchestra’s directors were at pains to emphasise their visit would not stray into politics and was purely aimed at increasing cultural understanding between Iran and the West.

“My wish is to show the peoples of both our countries that there is no need to fear one another and it is a great pleasure to get to know one another,” said the director of Osnabrueck’s summer festival, Michael Dreyer.

“I hope that it will be increasingly normal to have cultural exchanges between Iran and Germany and the Western world,” he told reporters after arriving in Tehran.

* “Normal” to have cultural exchanges with a cult(-ure) that wants to bring about the end of culture and civilization?

Dreyer said he had rejected a request by three German MPs to join the tour in order to keep the trip focused on music and not politics. The trip has been fully coordinated with Iran’s ministry of culture and Islamic guidance.

Western classical music was frowned upon in the immediate aftermath of the Islamic revolution but has seen a cautious resurgence in recent years, with pieces by classical greats programmed on state radio and in concerts.

However no Western orchestra has ever played in the Islamic republic, although the US-backed shah played host in the 1970s to the Berlin Philharmonic and their legendary conductor Herbert von Karajan.

Tehran’s symphony orchestra gives regular concerts, mixing Western classics with compositions by Iranian composers. Western chamber ensembles have visited occasionally, especially during the reformist presidency of Mohammad Khatami.

Judging by the questions posed by Iranian journalists at the press conference, there is set to be some debate over the exclusively Western choice of the repertoire and soloists in the Osnabrueck orchestra’s concerts.

Just hours after arriving, the orchestra’s leadership found themselves quizzed why an Iranian symphony had not been included in the programme and why plans to include famed Iranian singer Sharham Nazeri had fallen flat.

Dreyer defended the choice, saying there was not enough time to rehearse an Iranian symphony and logistics made inviting the US-based Nazeri impossible.

“The women are not used to playing in hijab. I am very glad that the women tried it and it was fine. What is most important is the music,” said conductor Hermann Baeumer.

Who is setting Greece on Fire?

* Every year southern European forests are burning, set alight by mysterious arsonists. Sometimes we are told that ‘land-speculators’ are behind it, (the Jooozzz come to mind since they are always to blame, although no one ever offers any proof…) and sometimes, when arsonists are caught, their names are usually withheld, because their ‘privacy must be respected’- so once again, we ask: Who is burning down the ancient forests of Greece, Spain, the cork-oak forests in Portugal, and the forests in the Provence? Could it have anything to do with the economic jihad that OBL promised to wage against us, anything at all?

Saturday’s high winds helped spread wildfires across Greece, scorching villages and sending smoke across the Ionian Sea, as seen in this satellite image from NASA.

By Nicole Itano | Correspondent of The Christian Science Monitor

ATHENS – The scenes of desperation played out on television: residents phoned local media outlets begging to be saved as walls of fire descended on their houses and villages, while overstretched firefighters battled more than 170 blazes that erupted seemingly simultaneously.

On Sunday, at least 51 people were confirmed dead in the worst series of fires to hit Greece in decades. And still, fires, many of them blamed on arsonists, continued to spread across the country, fanned by gale-force winds and fed by vegetation dried out from long months of drought.

Now, as authorities struggle to deal with the immediate crisis, the fires have pushed the environment to the top of the political agenda in a country where such issues previously won little attention. With Greek national elections less than three weeks away, questions are being raised about how seriously the government takes the protection of the country’s open spaces.

Calling the fires an “unspeakable tragedy,” Greek Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis declared a state of emergency Saturday, along with three days of mourning. For the time being, campaigning in the election has been called off and some analysts suggest that the election may even be delayed. Indeed, the fires have spawned outrage and anger across the country.

“Right now we’re in state of hiatus, and no one knows how it will finally shake out, but clearly it will be a key issue,” says John Psaropoulos, editor of the Athens News, from near Zaharo, one of the hardest hit areas of Greece where dozens have been killed.

This has been one of the hottest and driest summers in recent history, and much of southern Europe has been plagued by forest fires. In Greece, the dry conditions have played a role. But many of the fires, government and forestry experts say, have been set by arsonists, hoping to clear land for development.

“So many fires breaking out simultaneously in so many parts of the country cannot be a coincidence,” Mr. Karamanlis said in a nationally televised address Saturday. “The state will do everything it can to find those responsible and punish them.”

Already, at least three people have been arrested for setting this weekend’s fires; one, accused of setting a blaze that killed six people, is being charged for murder as well as for arson. But in the past, local activists say, the state has had a poor record of catching and prosecuting these types of arsonists. The problem persists, they say, and in large part perpetrators have previously gotten away with it.

Mysterious indeed. Why do you think that is?

* Comment from a reader:

There were fires recently in Montenegro near the Albanian border. The local villagers caught a native of Albania in the act. There are currently some fires on the administrative border between Kosovo and the rest of Serbia. No word there on who’s responsible. And then no less than 40 fires in Greece right now. The Greek authorities arrested some people but haven’t released any names. We’ll see.
The positive side of the story is that Cyprus, Serbia, Israel, Italy and some others are all helping Greece with this calamity.

Frank asked the most obvious question that the mainstream media deliberately ignores. Who set Greece afire? This comes from Skai tv station in Greece, a very unbiased source of news:

The police, the armed forces and the Greek antiterrorism authorities have found arson devices in Greek forest areas which are triggered by mobile phones.

Satellite images reveal that within a space of a single hour, many fires appeared in different locations of Greece. The plan was to make the fire brigate forces overstretch.

It is certainly a terrorist attack.

Prosecutor Orders Probe Into Greek Fires

ATHENS, Greece — A top prosecutor ordered an investigation Monday into whether this summer’s arson attacks in Greek forests could be considered terrorism, the Public Order Ministry said.

Dimitris Papangelopoulos, who is responsible for prosecuting terrorism and organized crime, ordered the investigation to determine “whether the crimes of arsonists and of arson attacks on forests” could come under Greece’s anti-terrorism law, the ministry said in a statement.
The probe also will seek to establish the identities of the alleged perpetrators.

DAY 4 of deadly fires: Fires rage in Greece as SEVEN PEOPLE CHARGED WITH ARSON. They remain nameless. Why? Those depraved savages set a country on fire, the public deserves to know no matter who it is. I have searched all news sources. Any Atlas readers have a clue?

Not one major news network has even mentioned it. Half of Greece is on fire.

Sacked hardline cleric forces his way back

Richard Kerbaj | The Australian
A HARDLINE Islamic cleric who was sacked by moderate Muslims for praising jihadists has forced his way back into Canberra’s only mosque to preach anti-western messages.

Mohammed Swaiti used his predominantly Palestinian and Jordanian support base to topple the Islamic leadership in charge of Abu Bakr Mosque, allowing him to continue preaching Wahabbism — a fundamentalist strand of Islam espoused by Osama bin Laden.

Islamic Society of ACT president Sabrija Poskovic, whose organisation is in charge of the mosque at Yarralumla, said yesterday he was forced out after receiving threats from Sheik Swaiti’s followers. He told The Weekend Australian that the imam and his admirers would see his return as a win for extremist Islam in Australia.

“They took over the mosque by force, by argument, by screaming, by calling us names,” said Mr Poskovic. “There is no point arguing and fighting with him and his supporters any more.”

Canberra’s Muslim leadership fears the return of Sheik Swaiti — who is being investigated by the tax office for allegedly failing to pay tax on thousands of dollars in clerical allowances he is accused of receiving from the Saudi Government — would further divide the local community and threaten to radicalise more young followers of Islam.

* “Radicalize” more young followers of Islam? But isn’t Islam a “Religion of Peace?”

Mr Poskovic was planning to set up a prayer hall that would be used as an alternative to the mosque by moderate Muslims ideologically opposed to the Palestinian-born Sheik Swaiti.

* Building more mosques will fix it , sure…

A prominent figure in Canberra’s Muslim community, Mohammed Berjaoui, yesterday attacked national security authorities for overlooking Sheik Swaiti’s anti-western sermons and ignoring his supporters’ violent actions, which allegedly led to the bashing of the Islamic society’s secretary, Kurt Kennedy, in May.

Mr Kennedy resigned from his position last month.

“They used violence and force … to control a mosque, which is something that normally happens in the Middle East,” Mr Berjaoui said. “It gives the message that they used force and violence to control the society and police and authorities did not stop them. They can do whatever they want and get away with it.”

The Weekend Australian revealed in April that Sheik Swaiti, who also works for the tax office, was regularly praising mujahideen in his Friday sermons.

While he translated his sermon into English for non-Arabic-speaking audience members, the imam omitted praise for Islamic jihadists in the English version.

Sheik Swaiti delivered yesterday’s sermon at Abu Bakr Mosque.

“Allah-Balls”- Rage In Afghanistan

After Koran rage, cartoon rage, Pope rage and rage boy:

‘Blasphemous’ balls anger Afghans

By Alastair Leithead
BBC News, Kabul

The footballs angered residents in Khost

A demonstration has been held in south- east Afghanistan accusing US troops of insulting Islam after they distributed footballs bearing the name of Allah.

The balls showed the Saudi Arabian flag which features the Koranic declaration of faith.

The US military said the idea had been to give something for Afghan children to enjoy and they did not realise it would cause offence.

The footballs were dropped from a helicopter in Khost province.

Some displayed flags from countries all over the world, including Saudi Arabia, which features the shahada, one of the five pillars of Islam – the declaration of faith.

The balls were intended as a gift to Afghan children

The words, which include the name of Allah, are revered, and Muslims are very sensitive about where and how they can be used.

* A typical Al Bebeceera report: “Sensitive,” in this case, being defined as “prone to murderous rage.”

* To show how sensitive they are to this extreme sensitivity, the BBC sensitively blurs the offensive segment of the ball in their photograph.

* Sheik yer’mami is not that “sensitive”- Here is  a close-up of the dreaded ‘Allah Balls’:

“Allah Balls” find their way to Iran, video

Saudi Arabia has complained to the World Cup’s ruling body in the past about the use of its flag on footballs.

Mullahs in Afghanistan criticised the US forces for their insensitivity, and around 100 people held a demonstration in Khost.

Afghan MP Mirwais Yasini said: “To have a verse of the Koran on something you kick with your foot would be an insult in any Muslim country around the world.”

A spokeswoman for the US forces in Afghanistan said they made “significant efforts to work with local leaders, mullahs and elders to respect their culture” and distributing the footballs was an effort to give a gift the Afghan children would enjoy.

“Unfortunately,” she added, “there was something on those footballs we didn’t immediately understand to be offensive and we regret that as we do not want to offend.”

* That’s right. Americans don’t understand and don’t want to offend. Perhaps that’s the biggest problem of all…….

* There are some many here among us who would love nothing better than to kick the great balls of Allah…

Scores of Pakistani soldiers refuse to fight Islamic militants

Islamabad, Aug 25 (DPA) Scores of Pakistani soldiers have deserted the security forces deployed in tribal areas bordering Afghanistan, mainly because they were not sure whether fighting against their ‘own people’ was morally right, media reports said Saturday.
I did not desert the force because I feared death, but I was not sure whether the fighting in tribal district Waziristan was Islamic or not,’ a soldier from paramilitary Frontier Corps (FC) told the Daily Times.
The man, who recently refused to serve in tribal areas, claimed the same question was haunting many other soldiers and the confusion was stopping them from ‘putting up a tough fight’ against the Taliban and Al Qaeda elements in the area.
Pro-Taliban militiamen pulled out of peace treaties with the government after troops stormed the Red Mosque in the capital on July 10, and launched a series of raids on security forces.
These retaliatory attacks in the border regions have killed more than 60 troopers and 250 militants, army spokesman Major General Waheed Arshad said.
He confirmed the desertions but insisted these should be ignored as ‘insignificant incidents’.
‘Small-scale desertion takes place in any force and in any country for one reason or another,’ Arshad told the newspaper.
However, six soldiers from only one suburb of Peshawar, the capital of North-West Frontier Province, have deserted the Frontier Corps.
The force is the first line of defence of around 90,000 troops deployed along the country’s western border against militants launching attacks at international forces in Afghanistan.

Germany: The Story of Sascha & Fatma

European Dream Ends with Kidnapping, Prison

By Barbara Hardinghaus/Spiegel Online

Turkish-born Muharrem E. spent 34 years living the life of a respectable German in Munich. He was employed, raised his children and owned a condominium. Then his daughter fell in love with a German. The Turkish family kidnapped the boy, turning their story into a lesson about the limits of integration.

Couple Fatma and Sascha: With much of her family in jail, the pair will soon marry.

When the judge asks whether one of the defendants has anything to say, Muharrem E. stands up and says that he loves his daughter very much, despite everything.
His 20-year-old daughter Fatma is sitting on a plain metal chair. She has just testified as a witness, and in doing so she has accused her father, her mother and her brother, who are all sitting in the dock. When Fatma hears what her father has to say, she breaks down, starts crying, trembles and hides her eyes behind her black curls.

In courtroom B 309 of the Munich District Court, Muharrem E. and his daughter are separated by a space of only a few feet, by a small stretch of green carpeting and a wooden table. But what really separates the two is a fallacy:

That Muharrem E., who left his home in southeastern Anatolia 34 years ago to emigrate to Germany, ever believed that he had integrated into German life. Because in his head, he had never left Anatolia.

Muharrem E., who is wearing corduroy trousers, sits down and places his thin hands in his lap. When his daughter leaves the courtroom, she is accompanied by a witness assistant. Muharrem E. lowers his head. Fatma’s mother, Nimet, 54, lowers her head, and so does the brother. None of them looks at Fatma.

The family stands accused of having kidnapped a young German man one December morning at a Munich subway station, and of beating and threatening to kill him.

As they sit in the courtroom, they listen to what the judge has to say, and to the words of other witnesses, especially police officers, and of an expert witness. They listen to the story of their family being pieced together bit by bit, and the longer they listen to this story, the closer they come to understanding that it’s a true story.
They left their apartment on Dec. 13, the date of the alleged crime, a Wednesday, shortly before 6 a.m. It was still dark out. They climbed into their white Fiat Tipo and drove away from their neighborhood in western Munich. The men sat in front — Mehmet, the brother, and Muharrem E., the father — both wearing caps and black leather gloves. They drove across the city’s Central Ring and another eight kilometers until they had reached the subway station, where they waited.

They spotted Sascha as he walked along the sidewalk, passing the heavy traffic pushing its way into the city during morning rush hour. When Sascha reached the covered escalator, the two men grabbed him, first by his tracksuit and then by his right arm, and threw him onto his back.

“You know why,” said the father, Muharrem E, even though he and Sascha had never met before.

Sascha, a 19-year-old blonde, his hair cropped short, a boy who liked playing football and was learning the interior decorating trade, had just packed his tape measure, a pair of scissors and his lunch into his bag. As was usual at this time of the day, he was on his way from his apartment to school, wearing tennis shoes with loosely tied shoelaces. And yes, he knew what they meant.

He was a German who had been dating Fatma, the family’s youngest daughter, for two years. The couple had been living together for the past few weeks. Sascha felt the men’s hands on his back and saw the car, with the mother sitting in the back seat.

“I’m not getting in that car,” Sascha said.

Despite his protests, the men dragged him into the car and the father slapped him across the face twice. He then looked at the boy.

“Where is she?” he screamed.

Sascha knew that Fatma was at home in his apartment. She was cleaning the kitchen and getting ready for an appointment with a gynecologist. She was thinking about Sascha, and about the possibility that she could be pregnant.

Fatma knew that her parents had been trying to talk to her for some time, and that they had even threatened her. They wanted her to come home, but Fatma was no longer interested in going home.

“Where?” the father screamed again.

Sascha was silent. He was thinking of Fatma.

“Son of a bitch!” the father screamed at Sascha.

They wanted his mobile phone. Sascha, who was in tears by this point, kept insisting that he didn’t have a mobile phone, until they pulled it from his pocket. They wanted to call Fatma, hoping that she would answer the call if she recognized Sascha’s number on her screen.

They drove to a nearby athletic field in the Moosach neighborhood and parked the car. The brother turned off the engine, switched off the light and dialed Fatma’s number.

But, as coincidence would have it, Fatma didn’t answer. The men became furious. The mother sat in the back seat, saying nothing.
“I’d really like to kill you! The police won’t find anything, I’m wearing gloves,” the brother screamed.

“Give me back my daughter or I’ll kill you!” the father screamed.

* An honor killing in the making?

The family had already purchased one-way tickets from Munich to Istanbul, and one of them was issued in Fatma’s name. Their plan was to return to the home they had left decades earlier and take their daughter with them. To them it suddenly seemed to be the best solution.

Muharrem E. sat in the car for a while and considered his options. It became light outside and started to rain. Then he ordered his son to drive to Sascha’s apartment.

So much for integration. Read it all
