THE alleged leader of a Muslim terror cell was a religious teacher who encouraged followers to commit fraud, a court has heard.

“He doesn’t have the qualities of a leader,” Mr Trevor Wraight, appearing for co-accused Aimen Joud, 23, told Australia’s largest terrorist trial today.

Beginning his closing address in the case, Mr Wraight said Abdul Nacer Benbrika, 48, was a harsh, strict, religious “egomaniac” who was able to make young Muslims feel empowered at a time when they were feeling paranoid and in the minority. 

But he and his 11 followers were not a terrorist organisation, Mr Wraight told the Victorian Supreme Court. (Of course not, they’re just a religious prayer group…)

He said Mr Joud was a young man and at times did say some “stupid things” in conversations that were secretly recorded by police and had some documents downloaded from the Internet. 

But there was no evidence the group intended to commit any acts of terrorism, as alleged by the Crown. 

“He and this group did nothing,” Mr Wraight said. He said the alleged group had not  committed any  acts of violence or terrorism.

“In relation to acts of violence and terrorism, this group did nothing,” Mr Wraight said.

 (Not yet. They got caught before they could do anything…)

Mr Joud, Mr Benbrika and 10 other Melbourne Muslim men have pleaded not guilty to a range of terrorism charges, including being members of a terrorist organisation. 

The trial before Justice Bernard Bongiorno is continuing.

SAFI, Morocco: It’s an uncommon sight for an Arab country: hundreds of joyous Jewish pilgrims gathering without fear around a rabbi’s tomb, greeted by local Muslim officials who share a prayer with them at a synagogue.Yet most of the 400 Jews who converged on the Moroccan coastal town of Safi — some from nearby cities, others from as far as France or Israel — at a weekend pilgrimage said they felt welcome here.

*  Morocco is not an ‘Arab country’-, that alone should make you suspicious about the poor knowledge and the misguided wisdom of this writer…

 

While religious tensions flare in Jerusalem and beyond, in Morocco, Jews and Muslims say they nurture a legacy of tolerance and maintain common sanctuaries where adherents of both religions pray. Decades of emigration to Israel by Morocco’s Jews and terrorist bombings in Casablanca that targeted Jewish sites haven’t diminished the draw of these annual pilgrimages.

Currently, Jews in Britain are FOUR TIMES more likely to suffer physical attacks than Muslims, and it is a sad fact that some of these attacks upon Jews are carried out by Muslims. It is now a popular myth – originally invented by Bernard Lewis – that Muslim anti-Semitism originated with the foundation of Israel, and that before the advent of Zionism Muslims treated Jews well.

In an article in the Independent newspaper, Peter Oborne argued that Islamophobia is the new “British disease.” He follows the line that Muslims are being oppressed, and states that “Surveys show Muslims have the highest rate of unemployment, the poorest health, the most disability and fewest educational qualifications of any faith group in the country. This means they are vulnerable, rendering them open to ignorant and hostile commentary from mainstream figures.”

If Muslims are poorly educated and unable to find good jobs, is this the fault of Britain? Recent mass immigration from Poland has proved that even without language skills, there are jobs available in Britain for those who are willing to work. Muslims’ health issues are similarly of their own making – after all, in Britain, even illegal immigrants have access to full free-on-the-point-of-delivery healthcare. And I wonder what these surveys class as disability – work-related accidents, or even congenital disabilities, caused by inbreeding, a by-product of arranged marriage customs?

BEIJING (AFP) — Chinese police killed five Muslims in its far northwest who were planning to wage a “holy war” against the nation’s majority Han population, the official Xinhua news agency reported on Wednesday.

The five were killed on Tuesday when police raided their hide-out in Urumqi, the capital of the Muslim-populated Xinjiang region, Xinhua reported, citing local authorities.

Fifteen people, all Muslim Uighurs, were at the apartment and all had been wielding knives when police conducted the raid, the report said, without mentioning any heavier weapons such as guns.

“The suspected criminals that police killed and nabbed… were from a ‘holy war’ training group,” Xinhua said, citing an Urumqi police spokesman.

20 Islamists on Abu Qatada’s No Contact List

London, Asharq Al-Awsat – Jordanian Islamist Abu Qatada, who was recently released from the Long Lartin Prison in northern England, is banned from contacting 20 Islamists in Europe most of whom are held in British jails, Asharq Al-Awsat can reveal. Most of the Islamists Abu Qatada is banned from contacting are of Algerian descent and are currently in British jails, while one individual is held in France and another in the Czech Republic.

The British Home Office set 20 conditions to release him under house-arrest restrictions. The conditions for the release of Abu Qatada include a ban on contacting Osama Bin Laden and his deputy, Ayman al-Zawahiri. Islamists based in London described these conditions as “obstructionist”, while others said they are “unreasonable.”

ISLAMABAD (Reuters) – About 2,000 Islamist women gathered at the radical Red Mosque in the Pakistani capital on Wednesday and vowed to raise their children for holy war, days after a suicide bomber killed 18 people after a similar rally.

“We are not terrorists. … America and its stooges are terrorists,”

Chanting slogans of “jihad is our way”, burqa-clad women, some with babies, listened to fiery speeches from the daughter of the mosque’s jailed cleric on the eve of the anniversary of a commando raid on the complex in which more than 100 people died.

“Our mujahideen (fighters) laid down their lives for the enforcement of the Islamic system in Pakistan. We are left behind to carry forward their mission,” the daughter of cleric Abdul Aziz told the tightly guarded rally in the mosque compound.
