Muslim council leaders have sparked outrage after trying to ban all councillors eating in meetings until sunset during the holy month of Ramadan.

Politicians have hit out after the move to impose hardline Islamic rules on non-Muslim colleagues throughout September.

The bombshell has been dropped by Labour chiefs of the notoriously loony Tower Hamlets Council in east London.

The storm was sparked by an e-mail sent to all councillors this week highlighting arrangements for Town Hall committee meetings next month, which marks the Muslim fasting period of Ramadan.

The memo said that new council leader Lutfur Rahman and his deputy, Siraj Islam, had requested that meetings be kept to a minimum to accommodate fasting councillors.

Sarajevo Muslims paint the pavements dysentery green

SARAJEVO — The Croatia Libertas NGO says that the decision to paint pavements in Sarajevo in green is pure provocation.  

The non-governmental organization stated that the painted pavements were a clear message from Muslims to all the city’s other residents that Sarajevo was not the capital city of Bosnia-Herzegovina, but an ethnically Bosniak capital.

“This is a message of intolerance and a perfidious scene of ethnic cleansing that was preconceived as a way to drive away people of other ethnicities and religions living in Sarajevo,” said NGO President Leo Pločkinić.

He said that nowhere in the world were streets and pavements painted green—the color traditionally linked with Islam—not even in Tehran.

“It is clear that Sarajevo wants to be a greater Tehran than the capital city of the Islamic Republic of Iran itself,” Pločkinić surmised.

Sarajevo Mayor Semiha Borovac said that painting the pavements and streets green would be good for the city, because the city lacked greenery.

Suicide attack at Algerian police academy kills 43

A suicide bomber rammed an explosives-rigged car into a police academy as recruits lined up to register for classes, killing at least 43 people. It was the deadliest attack in recent years in the North African country.

The Interior Ministry said 42 civilians and a police officer were killed in the attack early Tuesday in the town of Les Issers, some 35 miles east of the capital, Algiers, the state-run APS news agency said.

Suicide bombers tried unsuccessfully to storm a U.S. military base near Afghanistan-Pakistan border in a daring attack on a major American installation, officials said Tuesday. Six insurgents detonated their vests after being surrounded.

The attack came a day after a suicide bomb outside the same base killed 10 civilians and wounded 13 others. The fighting was still going on early Tuesday, said U.S. coalition spokesman 1st Lt. Nathan Perry. There have been no American deaths, he said.

10 French troops killed in Afghanistan

SUROBI, Afghanistan — France has suffered a major setback in fighting in Afghanistan.

Officials say 10 French soldiers were killed and 21 wounded Tuesday when they were ambushed by about 100 insurgents in the Surobi district, 50 kilometres east of the Afghan capital.

It was reportedly the biggest single loss of life among international forces in combat in Afghanistan in three years.

Al-Farooq Masjid, Atlanta’s largest mosque, opened its doors on 14th Street N.W. on Sunday, proudly showing off to invited guests the $10 million edifice with it 65-foot-high dome over the main prayer hall.

“It’s with a sense of humbleness and gratitude toward God Almighty that he has allowed us to see the completion of this mosque,” said Dr. Khalid Siddiq, a Cobb County resident and long-time leader in Atlanta’s Muslim community. “The community has been trying to build this mosque for the last 10 years.”

Members excitedly took guests from other faiths on tours of Al-Farooq Masjid, pointing out the carved travertine stone details and the intricate, geometric, hand-painted designs on the dome and walls.
