Once Barack Obama had what was described as “cool”. Now that “cool” is called “aloof”, as he concedes:

That caps off a truly disastrous first year. Obama’s ratings have been in free fall. His health care bill looks doomed after nine months of gestation. The deals done for votes for that bill look like the greasiest kind of corruption and pork-barrelling. Meanwhile, unemployment actually went up after Obama’s “rescue” package. The US is now drowning in debt. Moreover, Obama’s bizarre decision to offer al Qaida’s No. 3 man a civilian trial in New York made him look weak on terrorism. Guantanamo Bay is still not closed. Not surprisingly, Obama’s Republicans have since lost the governorships of New Jersey and Virginia. They’ve now lost Ted Kennedy’s Senate seat. Obama’s famous outreach to the world has been snubbed by Russia and China. He was humiliated by the International Olympic Committee when he personally campaigned to get the Olympics for Chicago. He was rebuffed again at the Copenhagen summit. His plan to rid the world of nuclear weapons went nowhere. Nuclear-arming Iran refuses to take his threats seriously.

What more could go wrong? The Financial Times has a little list.

Obama, like Kevin Rudd, has a deadly habit of making a high-soaring promise without conceding or even contemplating the difficulties in executing it. The thrill of the headlines of the fierce and urgent now count for far more to these men of cheap symbols than the slow caution of considering the consequences. Latest example? On Friday, one year to the day that Obama vowed to close Guantanamo within 12 months, we read this:

A Justice Department-led task force has concluded that nearly 50 of the 196 detainees at the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, should be held indefinitely without trialunder the laws of war, according to Obama administration officials.

Oh, and Guantanamo is still open, of course. Obama’s promise was worthless in both spirit and black-letter fact. The best thing that can be said for his broken promise is “thank goodness”.

An Imam in Paris has given his support for a law against full-face veils and burqas in France.

A Parliamentary Commission in France is about to deliver its findings after a six-month investigation into the religious, cultural and social significance of the more conservative style of dress by Muslim women.

Hassen Chalghoumi, who heads a mosque in a northern suburb of Paris, said women who wanted to cover their faces should move to Saudi Arabia or other Muslim countries where that was a tradition.

The report will be handed to the national assembly on Tuesday after which the French Government is likely to pass a law banning clothing that covers the face while they are in public.

President Nicolas Sarkozy supports a ban calling the veils an affront to women’s dignity.

When the dots are connected, the picture that emerges is not pretty: An “Islamic world” in which terrorists are regarded often with lenience, “jihad is not terrorism”- sometimes with respect and occasionally with reverence, while minority groups face increasing intolerance, persecution and “cleansing,” where even their histories are erased. And we in the West are too polite, too “politically correct,” and perhaps too cowardly to say much about it.

The constant handwringing, soul searching, blame game and the idiotic question as to ‘why they hate us’ is getting on my nerves.
