Representatives of six Swedish political parties published a joint editorial in Dagens Nyheter (DN) newspaper on Saturday in support of the new house of worship.

The six politicians hope that a mosque might stimulate the local economy and increase security in the area, pointing to the mosque built in Södermalm in the 1990s as an example of a similar success story. They also emphasize it is important for the parties to maintain a broad coalition to stand behind the mosque construction in order to combat prejudice….

The second Arts and Sciences Humanities Lecture, “How the Muslims Saved Civilization: the Reception of Greek Learning in Arabic,” will be given by distinguished scholar of Islamic thought Peter Adamson, professor of ancient and medieval philosophy, King’s College London.The lecture will be held at 4:30 p.m. April 13, at the Hollis E. Cornell Auditorium in Goldwin Smith Hall. A reception will follow the lecture in the Ruth Woolsey Findley Gallery of Art on the lower level of Goldwin Smith Hall. Both events are free.

Dr. Adamson is likely to be retailing the idea that Islamic culture was once a beacon of learning and enlightenment — a common myth, and one that is ultimately meant to make non-Muslims relax and love the jihad.

But in fact, much of the most common claims about the great achievements of Islamic culture have been exaggerated, often for quite transparent apologetic motives. The astrolabe was developed, if not perfected, long before Muhammad was born. The zero, which is often attributed to Muslims, and what we know today as “Arabic numerals” did not originate in Arabia, but in pre-Islamic India. Aristotle’s work was preserved in Arabic not initially by Muslims at all, but by Christians such as the fifth century priest Probus of Antioch, who introduced Aristotle to the Arabic-speaking world. Another Christian, Huneyn ibn-Ishaq (809-873), translated many works by Aristotle, Galen, Plato and Hippocrates into Syriac. His son then translated them into Arabic. The Syrian Christian Yahya ibn ‘Adi (893-974) also translated works of philosophy into Arabic, and wrote one of his own, The Reformation of Morals. His student, another Christian named Abu ‘Ali ‘Isa ibn Zur’a (943-1008), also translated Aristotle and others from Syriac into Arabic. The first Arabic-language medical treatise was written by a Christian priest and translated into Arabic by a Jewish doctor in 683. The first hospital was founded in Baghdad during the Abbasid caliphate — not by a Muslim, but a Nestorian Christian. A pioneering medical school was founded at Gundeshapur in Persia — by Assyrian Christians.

The point here is simply that the great achievements of Islamic culture are being exaggerated for political and apologetic reasons today. For this sort of thing to go on at jihad-justifying Islamic websites is one thing, but an academic should know better. Emphasis on “should.”

If anyone makes Dr. Adamson’s lecture and he takes questions, these would be some facts that one might politely and respectfully ask him about.

John J. O’Neill’s latest guest-essay on the Gates of Vienna concerns the lack of any substantive evidence for a “golden age” of Islam.

In my recently published Holy Warriors: Islam and the Demise of Classical Civilization, I have argued in detail that Islam, far from being a force for enlightenment in the so-called Dark Age, was actually responsible for the destruction of the literate and urban civilization that we now call Classical; and that, if anything, it was Islam that caused Europe’s descent into backwardness during the Middle Ages. In the same place I have argued in detail that the Islamic Golden Age of the late seventh to the mid-tenth centuries, during which the world of Islam is supposed to have basked in the light of science and learning, is a complete myth, and that no such epoch ever existed. The evidence for this is archaeological.

Muslims claim that the period of the Emirate and the Caliphate was tolerant to the surviving Christianand Jewish dhimmis living on the conquered land provided that they followed stringent dhimmi rules imposed by the Islamic occupiers. The Caliphate during the tenth century has been called an Islamic Golden Age by Muslims though critics challenge this as a myth pointing out that this supposed golden age was preceded by the brutal slaughter of tens of thousands of native spaniards by the invading Muslim armies. In Muslim culture, Andalus today is a nostalgic symbol of an earlier “Golden period” of Islam.

But that four of the five Muslim soldiers that were questioned, have been discharged for “petty crimes”. What I want to know is what does “petty crimes” equate to? If they were “petty crimes” that had nothing to do with a poisoning plot, how come they were not discharged until now? After the obvious cover up of the Islamic factor in the Fort Hood shooting, what is to stop them from lying to us again?

US Rep: No plot to poison food at SC Army base

COLUMBIA, S.C. — An Army probe into allegations of verbal threats involving a base’s food supply has revealed that none of the five soldiers detained was involved in any plot to poison food at the base, a congressman said Sunday.

U.S. Rep. Joe Wilson, R-S.C., said Sunday information he received as a member of the House Armed Services Committee showed there was no plot. The five Muslim soldiers who were connected to a translator training program had been detained in December while the Army investigated.

“The investigation revealed that there was not an effort to poison food,” Wilson said. The probe also showed the men had not been disloyal.
Four of the soldiers were discharged from the Army for petty crimes, Wilson said, and the fifth was returned to his National Guard unit in Virginia. None of the soldiers has been identified.

U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Command spokesman Chris Grey said Sunday that the base’s food was never in danger, and the investigation didn’t turn up any credible information to support the allegations.

An investigation continues into other possible crimes relating to information found on their laptops, Wilson said. The laptops were turned over to the FBI for analysis.

Neither Grey nor Wilson would elaborate on the ongoing investigation.

Fort Jackson, near Columbia, puts more than 50,000 soldiers annually through basic and advanced instruction, serving about 40,000 hot meals daily at 13 dining halls.

YEMEN: Where the elite meet to “misunderstand” Islam/The Australian

Counter-terrorism agencies are increasingly concerned about deepening links between a group of Australians under surveillance because of their connections with the Sydney terror cell and Islamic militants in Yemen, widely regarded as “the new Afghanistan” for al-Qa’ida.

Security agencies are monitoring the movements of at least 20 Australians who have travelled to Yemen in recent years, including friends and family of the nine men recently convicted and sentenced to up to 28 years in prison for preparing for a terrorist act in Sydney.

Authorities have also monitored mobile phone and email communications between some of them and a Yemeni militant group led by American-born cleric Anwar al-Awlaki, who the US claims is a leading recruiter and motivator for al-Qa’ida and its franchise groups.

Awlaki is wanted in connection with the attempted bombing of Northwest Airlines Flight 253 on Christmas Day. The accused bomber, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, reportedly identified Awlaki as his recruiter and trainer.

The cleric also provided religious advice to US army major Nidal Malik Hasan, who is accused of murdering 13 people and wounding 30 more in a shootout at the Fort Hood army base last November.

Awlaki preaches that “hatred of kufr (non-Muslims) is a central element of our military creed” and urges Muslims to remain physically fit and train with firearms “to be ready for the battlefield”. Videotapes of his sermons have been circulated among a small group of admirers in Australia.

“His teachings are of great concern to us,” Detective Superintendent John O’Reilly, commander of the NSW Police Counter-Terrorism and Special Tactics Operations Group told The Australian.

The Australians who have travelled to Yemen include a Sydney man who left for the Middle East late last year, only weeks after having his passport returned to him byASIO. It had been confiscated following an ASIO assessment that he was “likely to support or participate in acts of politically motivated violence”.

The man had previously travelled to Pakistan, where police say he trained with the terrorist group Lashkar-e-Toiba in 2000, before it was proscribed in Australia.

Former Australian Guantanamo Bay inmate David Hicks told Australian Federal Police the man had been in the same camp at the same time as him.

The Sydney man was named repeatedly during the recent terror trial, which culminated in the conviction and sentencing of five men on terrorism conspiracy charges in the NSW Supreme Court at Parramatta. Another four had already pleaded guilty.

The court heard that the man had been involved in buying laboratory equipment to be used in an attack but he was not charged because of insufficient evidence.

He had previously tried to visit Yemen in 2004, when arrangements were made for him by a friend from Sydney, Polish-born Marek Samulski, who had lived in Yemen.

Samulski was detained by Yemeni police in the capital, Sanaa, in 2006 during an investigation into an al-Qa’ida-linked group that the Yemeni authorities said was smuggling weapons to Islamist insurgents in neighbouring Somalia. Samulski, eventually released without charge, has not returned to Australia.

Australia’s ambassador for counter-terrorism Bill Paterson told a national security conference in Sydney last week that Yemen had effectively become a safe haven for militants much as Afghanistan was in the 1980s and 90s.

He said that experience led him to inklings about future events, including the United States’ 1986 bombing of Libya.

Islamic Pillar of the State Police?

March 3, 2010 (CHICAGO) (WLS) – The Illinois State Police Department currently has 37 chaplains or volunteer clergy who provide spiritual support for troopers, other employees and their families. Most are Christian; some are Jewish; and until last December, none was Muslim. That is when a Chicago Islamic leader named Kifah Mustapha went through the training and became the department’s first Muslim chaplain, its ‘pillar of the state police.’

Last December at Illinois State Police headquarters, Sheikh Kifah Mustapha became the department’s first and only Muslim chaplain. Mustapha was one of seven ministers who went through chaplain orientation training.

Police work can be stressful and sometimes traumatic. Chaplains are there to take the edge off.

“If there is any crisis, we do crisis intervention, very often we’re involved in critical incident debriefing,” said Father Johnpaul Cafiero, Illinois State Police chaplain. Watch an extended interview with Fr. Cafiero

At the end of the training that Mustapha paid for himself, he was among those who received their Illinois State Police ID cards, and bulletproof vests they are required to wear on ride-alongs and at crime scenes.

“He was admitted to the post. He went through the training and the vetting and the selection process. Everything was hunky dory,” said Ahmed Rehab, Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR).

At the Mosque Foundation of Chicago, where Mustapha is the top religious leader known as an ‘imam’ and one of the best known Islamic leaders in America, his appointment as a state police chaplain was heralded as good news to more than 500,000 metro Chicago Muslims.

“He is a man of great integrity…He’s looking to truly serve his country and his community. Muslims who serve every day in the Illinois State Police deserve a chaplain of their own faith,” said Rehab.

But not everyone welcomed Mustapha’s new position with the state police.

“First I thought there was another Kifah Mustapha. I could not believe that it could have been the same Kifah Mustapha who was associated with a terrorist organization and who was listed a year just a year and a half ago and was an unindicted co-conspirator in a terrorist case that the government won,” said Steve Emerson, Investigative Project on Terrorism.

Early this year, Steve Emerson’s terrorism research project Web site began posting videos and documents critical of Mustapha and questioning his appointment as an Illinois State Police chaplain.

“His appointment in Illinois is one of the most shocking developments and demonstrations of government ineptitude that I have ever seen,” said Emerson.

When that criticism of Mustapha trickled back to Illinois State Police, things changed.

According to apolice statement, “in early January, the ISP became aware that Mr. Mustapha was potentially identified as a member of the Muslim Brotherhood’s Palestine Committee. An immediate review of our background process began.”

“Our concern is that the Illinois State Police is kowtowing to articles online published by notorious anti-Muslims who have been in the business of smearing Muslim activists leaders and Imams for the longest time,” said Rehab.

Emerson, an oft quoted, self-styled national security expert who has testified before Congress, posted public Justice Department documents on his Web sitethat cite Mustapha as a member of the Muslim Brotherhood’s Palestine Committee, an organization that federal prosecutors say raises money for Hamas and is “committed to the globalization of Islam and violent jihad.”

Such membership resulted in Mustapha being named as an unindicted co-conspirator in the holy land foundation case, the “largest terrorism financing prosecution in American history.”

“The unindicted co-conspirator list-which by the way is not usually made public by the Dept. of Justice and in this case for some inexplicable reason was. It is not a conviction,” said Christina Abraham, CAIR civil rights director.

During the deposition in a 2001 civil terrorism suit, Mustapha admitted being the “registered agent for Holy Land Foundation in Illinois…soliciting money” for Holy Land programs until the group was frozen by U.S. Authorities.

“It is essentially guilt by association,” said Abraham.

CAIR’s civil right’s director says Illinois State Police have no legal basis to deny Mustapha the chaplain position.

Now, even tough all seven new chaplains have been told to refrain from any state police work it was only Sheikh Mustapha’s background that raised alarms here in Springfield.

“The fact that a man who has been fully associated with an Islamic terrorist organization that specialized in suicide bombing is made chaplain of the state police in Illinois is absolutely horrifying,” said Emerson.

“It is very important to us that the relationship between law enforcement and the Muslim community be based on mutual trust where the accepted leaders of this community do not have to be second guessed as a result of some notorious, dubious individual on the Internet,” said Rehab.

A state police official says the re-submitted background checks are underway and they don’t know when or whether Sheikh Mustapha or the others will past muster. As for Mustapha himself, despite being a very public figure on radio and TV, he asked CAIR to speak for him until the state police determine whether to allow him as a chaplain.
