An American intervention would likely aid jihadists. So in “Libya: What to do?,” by Raymond Ibrahim in National Review Online (via RaymondIbrahim.com), March 10, Raymond says that without a clear and focused objective, the U.S. should not intervene. Good advice, not often enough heeded:

That Qaddafi is an anti-American and tyrannical thug, there is no doubt. But unless this administration has a clear and focused policy on what it wants to accomplish in Libya—one that does not include cozying up to Islamists or that is built solely atop temporary economic considerations—it may be best to let the Middle East’s latest survival-of-the-fittest installment play out, and go from there.

Qaddafi Says He Will Join Al Qaeda If The West Invades

What? Is he saying he wasn’t a card carrying member all along?

The rebels are ‘rats’ and anyhow, the West  only wants to steal Libyan oil. Now where did we hear that before?

Colonel Qaddafi is switching scare tactics.

For weeks he warned that any ouster of himself would let Al Qaeda take control of Libya.

Now he warns that in an invasion he would join forces with Al Qaeda. Qaddafi told Il Giornale: “We will ally ourselves with al-Qaida and declare holy war.”

Qaddafi also expressed his discontent with European leaders (via The Guardian): “I was really shocked by the attitude of my European friends. They have damaged and endangered a series of major accords on security that were in their interests and the economic cooperation that we had… I am so shocked, I feel betrayed, I don’t even know what to say to Berlusconi.”   (via The Guardian)

Second night of rioting at Christmas Island centre

For the second night running rioting asylum seekers have damaged the Christmas Island detention facility.

Immigration Minister Chris Bowen says up to 200 detainees destroyed closed-circuit television cameras and lit a fire.

He says there was no direct confrontation and federal police officers were able to regain control without the use of tear gas, which was used to quell a larger riot on Sunday night.

“What we are seeing at Christmas Island is a group of up to 300 who are determined to engage in protest action,” Mr Bowen said.

“Clearly we have a difficult situation with ongoing tension – but it is being managed. I don’t underplay the seriousness of this event or the difficulties of this event.”

Pro-Israel groups in the United States are urging supporters to buy Israeli goods on 30 March in order to counter a global anti-Israel boycott called for that day. “We are telling people to go to their local stores, request the exact Israeli products being targeted, and buy them out,” Roz Rothstein, co-founder and national director of Stand With Us, which is spearheading the ‘Buy Israel Goods’ (BIG) project together with theAmerican-Israel Chamber of Commerce, told JTA. The fatwa by Sheikh Abdelmalek Ramdani, who lives in Saudi Arabia, comes at an opportune time for President Abdelaziz Bouteflika as Algerians watching protests in other Arab states have begun pushing their own political and economic demands.
