At least 1,000 people were killed in Bangui, the capital of the Central African Republic, in just two days of violence earlier this month, according to Amnesty International. The figure is significantly higher than an earlier UN estimate. (via JW)
The armed group initially denied the assault but, after footage appeared and caused an outcry, it issued a rare apology.

South Sudan on the brink of civil war
Juba:Â World leaders have stepped up efforts to pull South Sudan back from the brink of all-out civil war, as fighting rages across the country including in a key oil-producing region.
Special envoys from the US and Nigeria were flying into the capital Juba, following on from a mission by foreign ministers from east Africa and the Horn and after an appeal for an end to the violence from United Nations chief Ban Ki-moon.
