American Yogurt Billionaire: ‘Hire More Muslims’

An American yogurt billionaire Hamdi Ulukaya, founder and CEO of Chobani Yogurt wants to hire more Muslim refugees to work for his company, and six companies have already taken him up on the idea.  Ikea, MasterCard, Airbnb, LinkedIn, Western Union and UPS have all agreed to hire more refugees or provide free services to them.

World Net Daily Reports:

Ever wonder why the federal government would be sending hundreds of foreign refugees to a relatively small town in Idaho?

Wonder no more.

They’re sent there, many of them, to work in the world’s largest yogurt factory.

As WND previously reported, Twin Falls is in line to receive about 300 refugees this year, many of them Muslims from Syria. And the state of Idaho, despite its reputation as a mostly white, conservative farm state, has been a popular destination for refugees in recent years.

Boise Mayor David Bieter

Boise Mayor David Bieter has gone on record as a huge supporter of President Obama’s welcoming initiative for immigrants and refugees, writing in a blog post that, for his city, “diversity isn’t a buzzword. It’s our birthright.”

The U.S. State Department has shipped more than 11,000 refugees directly from the Third World to Idaho since the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. Just in the past year, 989 refugees have arrived in the rural state, most of them landing in either Boise or Twin Falls. Nearly half have come from some of the world’s nastiest jihadist hot zones, including 95 from Iraq, 94 from Somalia, 47 from Sudan, 39 from Afghanistan, 31 from Iran, 28 from Syria and 11 from Pakistan, according to the federal refugee database.

But despite growing protests by local residents against the refugee arrivals, the Twin Falls area can count on being a prime spot for refugees for years to come, thanks to one man’s rising business enterprise.

That man is Hamdi Ulukaya, a Kurdish Muslim and immigrant from Turkey who created the billion-dollar U.S.-based Chobani yogurt empire.

Ulukaya opened the world’s largest yogurt factory in Twin Falls about two years ago, and the plant now employs 600 people with about 30 percent of those jobs filled by foreign refugees shipped to the U.S. from United Nations camps in the Middle East and Africa.

But now Ulukaya is upping the ante.

Taking his message to a bigger stage

At the World Economic Forum meeting this weekend in Davos, Switzerland, he will call on other CEOs to join his campaign to throw corporate cash, lobbying initiatives, services and jobs to refugees.

Chobani

Six companies have already taken him up on the idea. Ikea, MasterCard, Airbnb, LinkedIn, Western Union and UPS have all agreed to hire more refugees or provide free services to them.

In an op-ed for CNN, Ulukaya writes:

“Some business leaders have stepped up. Airbnb is offering travel credits to relief workers on the ground. LinkedIn will run an innovative pilot project in Sweden that uses data to match refugees with job openings by comparing the skills they have with the skills employers are looking for. Other companies are providing refugees with free computers, access to online education, and packages filled with essentials like soap and sunscreen.”

Ulukaya wants more companies to join the effort of hiring and helping refugees. He started a new foundation, the Tent, for this purpose.

“The Tent Pledge asks companies all over the world to step up and do more. We’re asking them to provide refugees with job training, employment opportunities, and the kind of direct assistance that experts have identified as a priority – everything from blankets and water, to debit cards and Internet access,” he writes.

The Obama administration is increasing the number of foreign refugees taken in by the United States, from 70,000 annually over the past decade to 85,000 in fiscal 2016 and 100,000 in 2017. Those figures include 10,000 Syrian refugees in 2016 and “many more” in 2017, according to the U.S. State Department.

Obama has also lowered the standards for refugee screening, allowing more than 1,500 refugees who participated in terrorist activity to enter the U.S. in 2014, WND previously reported, allegedly because they committed their crimes “while under duress.”

Looking out for his own?

Ulukaya’s efforts appear spurred by his own cultural background as a Kurdish Muslim and by a personal visit to the refugee camps in Turkey and Greece.

Ulukaya has told several media outlets that he was horrified by the human suffering he witnessed.

But he said the fact that he shares a cultural affinity with many of the refugees — he grew up near the Syrian border in Turkey, before moving to the U.S. as a student – made an even bigger impact.

Ulukaya has also been critical of the bureaucratic red tape involved in the refugee resettlement industry, which starts at the top with the United Nations.

“The refugee issue is being dealt with using [methods from] the 1940s and it’s in the hands of the U.N. and mostly government and you don’t see a lot of private sector and entrepreneurs involved,” he told Gillian Tett of the Financial Times magazine last week. “I decided we have got to hack this — we have got to bring another perspective into this issue, there are technologies that can be used.”

The Tent initiative will funnel money and technology into refugee work. Ulukaya personally made a $2 million donation last year to the U.N. High Commissioner on Refugees.

What about Americans who need jobs?

And he has stepped up efforts to hire as many refugees as he can at his yogurt plants, where they currently account for 30 percent of the total workforce. That means about 600 of Chobani’s 2,000 employees in the U.S. are foreign refugees.

“There are 11 or 12 languages spoken in our factories,” Ulukaya told Financial Times. “We have translators 24 hours a day.”

Refugee watchdog Ann Corcoran said the strategy being pushed by corporate America is done in the name of compassion but actually leaves jobless American citizens and veterans further behind.

“Take UPS, for example. Almost every county has a UPS depot, and it’s a really nice job for people who are low skilled, loading the trucks,” said Corcoran, author of the blog Refugee Resettlement Watch. “It’s kind of a job that people are willing to do. You don’t have to ship people here from the Third World to fill those jobs.”

Chobani is not a shy company

This is not the first time Chobani has turned heads with controversial moves.

Scenes from the Chobani Yogurt ad last summer featuring two lesbians in bed.

Last summer, as WND reported, the company made a TV commercial featuring two lesbian women, naked and in bed eating the company’s signature Greek-style yogurt.

After graduating from Ankara University, Ulukaya came to the U.S. on a student visa in 1994 and studied at the University of Albany. He founded a feta cheese company called Euphrates in a suburb of New York in 2002. He bought an old yogurt factory in 2005 and started Chobani. He began making Turkish-style strained yogurt in 2007, which became popular in the U.S. as “Greek” yogurt.

In 2009, Ulukaya was named one of the “forty most successful entrepreneurs under 40” by the Business Review. Ulukaya’s net worth in 2013 was $5.4 billion, according to Bloomberg, and Chobani was named the top-selling yogurt brand in the U.S. Ulukaya was also named “Ernst & Young World Entrepreneur of the Year” in 2013.

  1. They should stop being financial hypocrites by taking bread off the halal approved list. Most bread contains significant traces of alcohol as a result of the action of leavening by yeast on the starches in the flour. Carbon dioxide is the other by-product. Whilst baking evaporates most of the alcohol, some remains making the bread haram. Muslims should be eating unleavened bread to be true to Islam otherwise they are hypocrites.

  2. OF FOOD AND MULTICULTURALISM…..

(Something I dashed off a few years ago……)

Slowly, ever so slowly……around the world and on every continent….glowing embers of sullen outrage, indignation and anger are bursting into flames….and did the Muslims expect anything less?

Not content to co-exist peacefully with their neighbours, they, the Muslims, have embarked on a course of action that now has the attention of the entire world.

But it has not always been this way in Canada….it was quieter, much quieter, before our recent guests arrived…..

I grew up in areas of large cities and smaller towns, in provinces across Canada, that were multicultural long before multiculturalism became the grotesque cancer it is today.

I grew up with Chinese, Japanese, Greeks, Koreans, Poles, Eastern Slavs, Ukrainians, Germans, Portuguese, Italians, Russians, Hindu’s and a wide variety of North American Indians……..and without exception we all got along very well together…….

Later in life I worked and soldiered with this same diverse group. To say that my life would have been better without these people and the friendships I made would be an outrageous lie.

From my slavering lust for Genoa salami and mortadella sandwiches….to plates of chow mein….to running rivers of curry and wedges of Naan bread…to sauerkraut and perogies heaped with bacon, sour cream and fried onions….to steaming bowls of pho soup laced with eye watering chili sauce….to bratwurst and schnitzel….to poutine and tourtiere……to souvlaki and baklava drenched in honey….. to plates of buttered egg noodles dripping with paprika laced goulash…..to slices of toasted bannock and thick, juicy moose meat steaks…… to dusty rodeos and chuck wagon races and beaming rodeo queens….to big loud noisy Italian weddings with ringing church bells……to bustling open air markets along Danforth where haggling is an art form…to Chinatown with storefront windows draped with BBQ-ed pork and whole chickens and ducks….to the Chinese medicine stores with all manner of strange wonders in glass jars.

To those who chose to worship and live differently like the Hutterites who would, hawking their wares, wander down our blocks following pick-up trucks loaded with fresh chickens and vegetables……….to the brightly painted Buddhist temples with prayers flags snapping in the breeze……to those who could not speak without wild gesticulations like the Italians……to Catholic cathedrals with stirring choirs……to the bags of roasted chestnuts sold by ruddy faced old men warming their hands over the flames from cart mounted roasting pans……to the quiet battles waged in parks over chess and checkers by chain smoking old men rubbing foreheads………to my classmates, every single one, as, in September 1972, we rose screaming from our desks at school when Paul Henderson scored the winning goal in the Canada/Russia series and acquitted Canada in glorious fashion…… and all of this, from Cape Spear to Long Beach….from Inuvik to Coutts….all of this bound together by a national anthem……”Oh Canada”….. all of this bound by a fierce pride and quiet gratitude in being Canadian……it was unspoken but it coursed through our veins….each and every one of us.

How far we have come from that…….now we are gifted with the “Hyphenated Canadian”……..

And of all the Hyphenated-Canadians, as despicable as they are for their self entitled arrogance, selfishness and haughty demands for accommodation and capitulation to their every whim and desire…for their manipulations of our immigration laws and regulations and welfare benefits…..of all of them, rising from the masses with a new standard of arrogance and entitlement….. are the Muslims.

Muslims…..almost singular in their outrageous and injurious behavior…almost singular in their desire to destruct, to destroy and to divide, their vexing malevolence knows no bounds.

From Valley Park Middle School where little girls are treated as human garbage for their menstruation’s, treated as such in accordance with the edicts of vile, poisonous old men……..to the Toronto 18 plotting a festival mass murder and terror……….to the slaughter of children and wives to assuage the delicately bruised egos of brutish, cowardly Neanderthals wrapped in the cloak and rhetoric of religious propriety……to the blackened eyes of errant housewives, a reflection of her insufficiencies of housework, culinary skills or sexual performance……..to the assaults on our culture and customs and traditions…….to the mosques and madrassahs, shrilly demanding public funding and secretly instilling a seething hatred of the “filthy, unbelieving Kufar” and the “evil conniving Jew”………oh yes………Muslims, ever the community players…..ever the lovers of peace…..have followed, to the letter, the murderous ramblings and poisonous lies of the greatest madman to ever walk the face of this planet…..Muhammad.

Let us not forget the thinly and not so thinly veiled threats of violence and the vigorous programs of lawfare as they use our criminal justice system, tribunals and avenues of civil litigation as personal weapons of intimidation.

Their efforts, these Muslims, these malcontents, are hardly inclusive, hardly harmonious as they seek out the protections afforded those full participants in a democracy, afforded citizens who truly are injured and seek redress. They use those protections to harass and injure us with specious and vexatious claims…..like that overly litigious, vicious, thin skinned, vile little puffed up, pretentious, Pakistani peacock, Syed B. Soharwardy……..the vulgar little “Cartoon Cowboy of Calgary”………with his insipid ramblings….a vulgar little man who drained a couple of million dollars of tax-payers money away funding an Alberta Human Rights Commission witch hunt…..a witch hunt to mend his battered Muslim sense of propriety. How utterly wretched….. how utterly Muslim.

In short, as reflected in Western countries around the globe, there is no other group who has so tirelessly, so unswerving and so diligently, assaulted the very men and women who opened their doors to them and offered them little else but kindness, generosity and hospitality.

This video above…is, on an international scale, the growing backlash they have so diligently cultivated. Now, they can be scarcely heard to complain……its a backlash they richly deserve.

In closing…trouble me not with arguments about the “Good Muslim”……in their absence and in their silence and in their refusal to publicly and loudly condemn the murderous hobbies of their brethren can be found volumes truthfully spoken to their sullen complicity and wholehearted agreement with the same.

  3. Last summer, as WND reported, the company made a TV commercial featuring two lesbian women, naked and in bed eating the company’s signature Greek-style yogurt.

Perhaps the muzlims haven’t caught wind of this yet?

  4. One reason Chobani needs more workers is the company received a large, lucrative national contract to provide yogurt (as meat substitute) for Michelle O’s school lunch program. (Some feel the contract award is suspect.) Seems Hamdi and Obama are “tight”.

“Chobani owner Hamdi Ulukaya was also named by President Obama as a “Presidential Ambassador for Global Entrepreneurship,” which included a “closed-press” meeting with the president at the White House, according to the Daily Sabah”.

“. . .Chobani’s fast-track to school cafeterias across the U.S. – with a contract awarded faster than other companies have even gained approval for their products – raises the same question Green Mosters! blogger Kristina Pepelko first raised in 2013: is the National School Lunch Program and the tightened restrictions on school food truly designed to produce healthier students, or are special interest lobbyists driving menu recommendations from Washington, D.C.?”
