The Failure of the West’s ‘Ostrich’ Policy

With the Serbs and Albanians unable to reach common ground, it’s now up to the United Nations to determine the future status of Kosovo. It won’t be easy. According to a new study, the international community has failed miserably.

Common ground on Kosovo, it seems, is still a long way off. In Vienna on Saturday, a year of fruitless talks between Serbs and Kosovo Albanians failed to reach a negotiated solution for the province, leading United Nations Special Envoy and Finnish President Martti Ahtisaari to admit defeat. He said he would now send his plan to the UN Security Council for review.
But even if the council imposes a solution, the future of the province is far from rosy. That, at least is the conclusion reached by a Berlin think-tank this month, saying the international community is largely to blame for ignoring the realities in Kosovo.

The planned “construction of a multi-ethnic society” has “failed” and does not exist “outside the bureaucratic statements of the international community,” says the report, released by the Institute for European Politics (IEP) in Berlin.

Indeed, eight years after the end of the Kosovo War — when NATO air strikes on Belgrade ended the Serbian crackdown on the Albanian insurgency — the two sides still want as little to do with each other as possible. While the ethnic Albanian majority insists on nothing less than full independence, many Serbs do not want to lose Kosovo, which they see as their historic homeland.

TRIPOLI (AFP) – A Libyan court on Sunday gave five condemned Bulgarian nurses and a Palestinian doctor two more weeks to prepare their defence against charges of slandering the police whom they accuse of torture.

The trial was adjourned until March 25 at the request of defence counsel Othman al-Bizanti.

The six medics who have been condemned to death for injecting Libyan children with HIV reiterated charges made at the last court hearing in February that they were tortured in prison.

They also denied accusations of slandering police officers.

“You should be ashamed of your crimes,” Palestinian physician Ashraf Ahmad Juma told the two police officers in court. “You tortured us and now you are prosecuting us.”

The medics have said they gave false confessions after being tortured and have denied charges of deliberately infecting hundreds of Libyan children with the virus that causes AIDS.

The slander charges carry a maximum penalty of three years in prison.

The six medics are on death row for having allegedly infected over 400 Libyan children with HIV-tainted blood at a hospital in the northeastern town of Benghazi. More than 50 of the children have died of AIDS.

The sentence was handed down on the basis of confessions by two of the nurses and the doctor, although the medics, who have already spent eight years in a Libyan prison, retracted these in court.

The medics, largely viewed as scapegoats by the international community, maintain their innocence based on testimony by foreign health experts who said the Benghazi AIDS epidemic was sparked by poor hygiene.

The six launched a last appeal against their death sentences on February 17.

The face veil is a barrier to Muslim integration in the West

The latest Doha Debate on February 19 joined in the bitter European debate about Muslims who wear the niqab or face veil, branding it “a barrier to integration” in the West.

In a surprise vote, fifty-seven per cent of the audience, said the niqab hindered integration in the West, appearing to support comments from western leaders such as Britain’s Tony Blair, who has termed the veil “a mark of separation.”

British Muslim Peer, Lord Ahmed of Rotherham, and Reem Maghribi, founder of Sharq magazine, argued that they didn’t want the face veil to become a symbol of Muslims and Islam.

“People can wear whatever they like…..(but) my worry is that a person wearing the niqab will become a symbol of Islam and will exclude me and many others from representing my point of view,” said Lord Ahmed.

UK school teacher Ayshah Ismail, who wears the niqab, told the 300-strong audience that she is fully integrated into British society. She blamed ignorance for the lack of acceptance the West has towards the veil. Her co-speaker against the motion: ‘This House believes the face veil is a barrier to integration in the West’, was Ahmed Younis, the former National Director of the Muslim Public Affairs Council in the US.
