Column – Scrap the Human Rights Commission. It’s a danger to boat people

This week HRC president Gillian Triggs was at it again, recklessly hyping claims of suicide attempts at the Christmas Island detention centre. “We’ve had reports that have been confirmed during the day that 10 women have attempted suicide,” Triggs announced.

These claims were inherently unlikely, and yesterday the Government said an investigation found “no basis” for them. (Read full article here.)

A wave of attempted suicides has swept Christmas Island as 12 mothers tried to kill themselves in the belief their then-orphaned children would have to be settled in Australia.

That also turns out to be utterly false….

We saw yesterday that is was likely that the Hamas leader in the house called the neighbors to protect him during the five minutes from the phone call to the bombing.

Since then, as far as I can tell, none of the other terror leader houses that have been bombed have been protected by “human shields,” meaning that the neighbors trusted Hamas to put their lives on the line exactly once.

Defence Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian, speaking during a visit to the former French colony, said its interim president was politically “isolated” as foreign troops struggled to stop recurrent violence between Muslims and Christians.

“The situation remains extremely complex and very fragile,” Le Drian told RMC radio while visiting French troops stationed there after 10 were wounded in recent clashes.

Central African Republic is one of the world’s poorest countries despite its deposits of gold, diamonds and other minerals. It borders some of the continent’s most unstable nations, including South Sudan and Democratic Republic of Congo.

The latest violence stems back to the takeover of the majority Christian country last year by the mostly Muslim Seleka rebel group. Christian militia sprung up in response, saying they were defending their communities against Seleka attacks.

The rebel stepped down earlier this year under intense international pressure and an interim government took over.

“I met the president (Catherine Samba-Panza) last night. She has a lot of determination and goodwill, but is a little isolated,” said Le Drian.

CHRISTIANS should be encouraged to marry Muslims as a way of tackling Islamophobia, a senior peer claimed today.

Lord Scott, a former Supreme Court Judge, cited his own family – in which two of his four children married Muslims – as an example of how interfaith families can thrive.

The peer, who sits as a crossbencher in the Lords, made the comments during a debate on how to improve relations between the Muslim community and other faith groups in the UK.

He said:  “Of my two sons one has become a Muslim and of my two daughters one of those has become a Muslim, and I have 12 lovely grandchildren, seven of whom are little Muslims.

Australia is pursuing draconian measures to deter people without visas from entering the country by boat. In doing so, it is failing in its obligation under international accords to protect refugees fleeing persecution …

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, António Guterres, said recently that “something strange happens” in the minds of Australians when it comes to asylum seekers who arrive by boat without a visa.

This is absurdly disingenuous. Economic opportunists and Islamic terrorists commonly discard their passports in order to make background checks more difficult, thereby improving their chances of gaining residency as genuine refugees. It isn’t strange at all that Australians reject this. Does the New York Times allow unknown and unidentified strangers to enter its building and stroll around on its editorial floors? If someone attempted to do so, would “something strange” happen, such as security or police throwing the intruder out?

At least 27 dead and 130 wounded in air strikes on strip, as Palestinian president appeals for international help. (al Jizz)

Israel’s intense bombardment of the Gaza Strip has killed at least 27 people and wounded 130 others, Palestinian officials have said.

Israel on Tuesday said it was ready for a long-term offensive against Hamas in the Palestinian territory after a surge in rocket attacks on Israeli towns.

“We are preparing for a battle against Hamas which will not end within a few days,” Defence Minister Moshe Yaalon said in a statement.

Israeli said it had undertaken more than 273 airstrikes against the strip on Tuesday.
