The Age apologises: 

The editorial team at The Age has offered an unreserved apology to the Jewish community for the controversial Michael Backman column that appeared in last Saturday’s newspaper.

A formal apology appeared on page two of Tuesday’s edition (January 20) of the newspaper, with The Age editor Paul Ramadge telling The AJN that the anti-Semitic views expressed by Backman “have no place at The Age. We completely reject his views”.

“We fully accept that the article has caused hurt and distress to the Jewish community and we apologise without reservation,” he said.

Ramadge said the story was published while he and other senior editors were on leave.

“We have a different crew editing the paper during the holiday period,” he said.

Ramadge would not comment on whether any Age employees would lose their jobs over the publication of the story, but did admit that more than one Age staffer were guilty of “errors of judgement”.

“We have taken steps to ensure that this sort of thing doesn’t happen again,” he said, adding that the staffer was being dealt with internally. 

Sounds like the dreaded counselling. No word yet from Backman himself.

At possibly last war crimes hearing at Guantanamo, two acknowledge guilt

GUANTANAMO BAY NAVAL BASE, Cuba – Two of the five men accused of orchestrating the Sept. 11 attacks offered unapologetic admissions of guilt Monday in a sometimes chaotic — and possibly final — session of the Guantanamo war crimes court.

The hearings, scheduled over several days, could be the last at Guantanamo, since President-elect Barack Obama has said he would close the offshore prison at the U.S. base in Cuba and many expect him to suspend the military tribunals and order new trials in the U.S.

Ramzi Binalshibh and Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the self-proclaimed architect of the terrorist attacks, casually admitted guilt during a series of outbursts as the translators struggled to keep up and the judge repeatedly sought to regain control.

* Jawa Report: Jihad Fritz identified: “Abu Talha the German” was identified as 31 year old Bekkay Harrach, a Moroccan born immigrant to Germany.

“We did what we did; we’re proud of Sept. 11,” Binalshibh announced at one point in proceedings that dealt with a number of legal issues, including whether he is mentally competent to stand trial on charges that carry a potential death sentence.

GENEVA (AP) — A Swiss lawyer working on behalf of the Iraqi journalist who threw shoes at U.S. President George W. Bush said Monday his client will seek political asylum in Switzerland.  Geneva-based lawyer Mauro Poggia said Muntadhar al-Zeidi’s life is in danger if he stays in Iraq.

* This is a story that went around the world. A Jewish mother put a Pali doctor in his place as he tried to make political mileage for the Pali-cause by whining for Pallywood. Looks like some people wizened up to Pali-prop. Curiously, in an unexpected twist, it turns out that  the daughter and the niece of the good doctor  have pieces of metal  from a Grad-type Katyusha rockets – and not from any ammunition used by the IDF – in their heads. Israel doesn’t shoot Katyusha rockets. Hamas does.

(IsraelNN.com) The IDF and a Gaza doctor who works in Israel traded charges on whether people in his Jabalya home were armed with guns or love. The IDF shelled the building, killing three of his daughters and wounding three others.

                

Dr. Ezzeldeen Abu al-Aish, who formerly worked at Soroka Medical Center in Be’er Sheva and now works at the Sheba Medical Center in Tel Aviv, protested the army shelling at a press conference at the Tel Aviv hospital.

Levana Stern, whose sons are serving in Gaza, interrupted the media event to protest, “Why is he engaging in propaganda? He is talking against Israel at the Sheba hospital. You should all be ashamed. All my children are serving in Gaza. Who knows what he had at his home?”

The IDF said his home was the source of gunfire at soldiers.

The killer bug, also known as the plague, swept through insurgents training at a forest camp in Algeria, North Africa. It came to light when security forces found a body by a roadside.

The victim was a terrorist in AQLIM (al-Qaeda in the Land of the Islamic Maghreb), the largest and most powerful al-Qaeda group outside the Middle East.

It trains Muslim fighters to kill British and US troops.

Now al-Qaeda chiefs fear the plague has been passed to other terror cells — or Taliban fighters in Afghanistan.

The Age‘s elevated shot doesn’t reveal such fascinating detail. The liberal progressives prefer to give you the “Big Picture”- but details matter.  AAP merely describes people “carrying placards calling for an end to what was described as a ‘massacre’”. Meanwhile, in Paris:

Home to Europe’s biggest Muslim and Jewish populations, France has recorded more than 55 anti-Semitic incidents since Israel launched its Gaza offensive last month, drawing appeals for calm from politicians and religious leaders. Three other synagogues have been firebombed in the past two weeks and vandals have sprayed anti-Israeli graffiti on at least two other Jewish places of worship. 

Jews haven’t been so vilified since Islamists attacked the US on 9/11. 

Berlin wasn’t the only European city to host anti-Israeli protests over the weekend. Here, demonstrators in Barcelona burn swastika symbol meant to recall the Israeli flag.

(IsraelNN.com) A paper fuse on an explosive device made from a small camping gas canister apparently was lit, but burned out before it could do any damage at the entrance of the Chabad House in Florence, Italy, over the weekend, according to the Jewish Telegraphic Agency. The device was reportedly discovered during the day Saturday but not reported to police until Saturday night after Shabbat.

Also on Saturday, thousands of people, many of them Muslim, staged a march in Rome which included placards showing swastikas superimposed on the Star of David. About 300 people staged a counterdemonstration in Rome’s historic Jewish ghetto neighborhood.

Last week, red paint was thrown at the front of the synagogue in Pisa.
