ISLAMABAD, Pakistan — After the United States has spent more than $5 billion in a largely failed effort to bolster the Pakistani military effort against Al Qaeda and the Taliban, some American officials now acknowledge that there were too few controls over the money. The strategy to improve the Pakistani military, they said, needs to be completely revamped.

In interviews in Islamabad and Washington, Bush administration and military officials said they believed that much of the American money was not making its way to frontline Pakistani units. Money has been diverted to help finance weapons systems designed to counter India, not Al Qaeda or the Taliban, the officials said, adding that the United States has paid tens of millions of dollars in inflated Pakistani reimbursement claims for fuel, ammunition and other costs.

“I personally believe there is exaggeration and inflation,” said a senior American military official who has reviewed the program, referring to Pakistani requests for reimbursement. “Then, I point back to the United States and say we didn’t have to give them money this way.”

Pakistani officials say they are incensed at what they see as American ingratitude for Pakistani counterterrorism efforts that have left about 1,000 Pakistani soldiers and police officers dead. They deny that any overcharging has occurred.

The $5 billion was provided through a program known as Coalition Support Funds, which reimburses Pakistan for conducting military operations to fight terrorism. Under a separate program, Pakistan receives $300 million per year in traditional American military financing that pays for equipment and training.

Civilian opponents of President Pervez Musharraf say he used the reimbursements to prop up his government. One European diplomat in Islamabad said the United States should have been more cautious with its aid.

“I wonder if the Americans have not been taken for a ride,” said the diplomat, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

FRIENDS of Rashid Rauf, the man wanted in Britain for last year’s Al-Qaeda plot to blow up transatlantic airliners, believe that he did not escape from custody last weekend but was kidnapped by Pakistan’s military intelligence agency (ISI). They fear he may be shot.

Rauf was arrested in Pakistan in August last year at the same time as 25 men were held in Britain after police uncovered an alleged plot to blow up 12 airliners flying to the United States from Heathrow and Gatwick.

The arrests led to widespread changes in airport security and a ban on liquids being taken onto planes in hand luggage.

Since then Rauf has been held with other Al-Qaeda suspects in Pakistan’s highest-security unit in Rawalpindi until his “escape” last weekend.

The Pakistan government has blamed junior policemen escorting Rauf back to jail after a court hearing in Islamabad where he was fighting moves to extradite him to Britain in connection with the murder of an uncle.

The officers had allowed him to stop for lunch at a McDonald’s restaurant and later in the journey permitted him to pray at a mosque. His handcuffs were removed to allow him to pray freely. When the guards entered the mosque to check on the prisoner, he had escaped through another door.

Fox News has long been considered a beacon to those that distrust televised liberal media, meaning every channel other than Fox. One of the indicators of the station’s right-leaning bent is that it has, for the most part, gotten the ‘War on Terrorism’ correct. However, with the undue influence of a Saudi Prince related to militant causes and with this month’s acquisition of Beliefnet, a religious resource website that proudly promotes radical Islam, signs show that the war coverage may soon be taking a turn for the worse.

In September of 2005, Saudi Prince Alwaleed bin Talal purchased 5.46 per cent of Class B voting shares in News Corp, the company that owns Fox News and a number of other media and entertainment entities. This had replaced the three per cent stake in Class A non-voting shares bin Talal had previously held through his investment corporation, Kingdom Holding Company (KHC).

With his newfound voting rights, bin Talal stated his intention of supporting Rupert Murdoch, the principal owner of News Corp, helping Murdoch to stay in power and avoid hostile takeover by other interested investors. Some have said that this was like making a deal with the devil, as Murdoch has been left vulnerable to the whims of an individual that has been involved in despicable causes.

In April of 2002, bin Talal had donated $27 million during a Saudi telethon that was raising money for the families of suicide bombers. As well, he had given $500,000 to the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) to be used towards the distribution and propagation of a set of Islamist books for American libraries. The set included Jamal Badawi’s Gender Equity in Islam, which sanctions the beating of women by their husbands, and a version of the Quran, Abdullah Yusuf Ali’s The Meaning of THE HOLY QURAN, which has been banned by the Los Angeles school system.

Utilizing his position of power within Fox News (today, he is the second largest shareholder), bin Talal has worked to influence programming at the station. An infamous example of this was reported in a December 2005 article found in WorldNetDaily, stating:

During the violent street protests in France one month ago, the prince said, Fox News ran a banner at the bottom of the screen that said “Muslim riots.”

“I picked up the phone and called Murdoch … [and told him] these are not Muslim riots, these are riots out of poverty,” al-Walid said.

“Within 30 minutes, the title was changed from Muslim riots to civil riots.”

This incident was precisely the type of scenario that then-Mayor of New York City Rudy Giuliani tried to avoid, when after the 9/11 attacks, he rejected a $10 million check from bin Talal for the renovation of New York, that was attached to statements made by the Prince critical of the United States’ relationship to Israel. The question now is how many more incidents, such as the one concerning the French Muslim riots, have occured without the notice of the American public? And how far has bin Talal’s influence been able to reach?

Muslim plans to broadcast a loudspeaker call to prayer from a city centre mosque have been attacked by local residents who say it would turn the area into a “Muslim ghetto”.
Dozens of people packed out a council meeting to express their concerns over the plans for a two-minute long call to prayer to be issued three times a day, saying that it could drown out the traditional sound of church bells.

But a spokesman for the Central Mosque said that Muslim’s also have the right to summon worshippers.

Dr Mark Huckster, who lives in Stanton Road and works at East Oxford hospice Helen House, told the Oxford Mail: “The proposal to issue a prayer call is very un-neighbourly, especially in a crowded urban space such as Oxford.

“I have lived in the Middle East and a prayer call has a very different feel to church bells and I personally found the noise extremely unpleasant, rather disturbing and very alien to the western mindset.”

He added: “If an evangelical Christian preacher proposed issuing sermons three times a day at full volume there would be an outcry.

“There could be a sense of ghettoisation of East Oxford. Cowley Road would have a Muslim flavour and could become a Muslim ghetto which is contrary to what we want in a multicultural society.”

Muslims driving Christians out of Bethlehem, but media outlets choose to blame Israel

Ah, Christmas in Bethlehem. Manger Square is ablaze with colorful lights. The weather is usually a bit chilly. Aggressive merchants bombard passersby with “special sales” on all kinds of cedar wood statues and religious carvings.

And like clockwork, the mainstream media descend upon this city every year to ignore rampant Muslim intimidation of Christians and instead blast Israel – often with completely inaccurate information – for ruining Christmas and for the drastic decline of Christianity in one of the holiest cities for that religion.

Take a widely circulated piece by McClatchy Newspapers writers Dion Nissenbaum and Cliff Churgin.

The piece, published last week, cites Bethlehem’s dwindling Christian population and paints a picture that squarely blames Israel.

“For generations, the Holy Land Arts Museum (in Bethlehem) has been selling olivewood manger scenes to thousands of pilgrims wanting souvenirs from the biblical birthplace of Jesus,” starts the piece.

“Gone is the olivewood stable shielding the baby Jesus, Mary and Joseph. In its place, looming over the angelic family, are an Israeli watchtower and three towering sections of an adjoining wall.”

Outright lying, the McClatchy Newspapers piece stated Bethlehem “remains largely isolated from the outside world by Israel’s 25-foot-tall concrete walls, part of Israel’s separation barrier.”

The piece implied the wall caused the crash of Bethlehem’s economy and prompted Christians to flee. Similar articles were churned out by Reuters, the BBC online and scores of local newspapers.

ABC News, for example, chimes in: “The (Israeli) wall has cast a shadow over this famous West Bank town.”

Now let’s get our facts straight. Bethlehem is not surrounded by any wall.

Israel in 2002 built a fence in the area where northern Bethlehem interfaces with Jerusalem. A tiny segment of that barrier, facing a major Israeli roadway, is a concrete wall, which Israel says is meant to prevent gunmen from shooting at Israeli motorists.

The fence was constructed after the outbreak of the Palestinian Intifada, or terror war, launched in 2000 after late PLO Leader Yasser Arafat turned down an Israeli offer of a Palestinian state, returning to the Middle East to liberate Palestine with violence.

Scores of deadly suicide bombings and shooting attacks against Israelis were planned in Bethlehem and carried out by Bethlehem-area terrorists.

At one point during the period of just 30 days in 2002, at least 14 shootings were perpetuated by Bethlehem cells of al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades terrorists, killing two Israelis and wounding six.

Many times Muslim gunmen in the Bethlehem area reportedly took positions in civilian homes in the hilltops of Christian Beit Jala, which straddles Bethlehem. Beit Jala afforded the terrorists a clear firing line at southern sections of Jerusalem and at a major Israeli highway down below, drawing Israeli military raids and the eventual building of the security barrier there.

Is this barrier causing Bethlehem’s Christians to flee, as the mainstream media claim?

Simple demographic facts will answer this question. Israel built the barrier five years ago. But Bethlehem’s Christian population started to drastically decline in 1995, the very year Arafat’s Palestinian Authority took over the holy Christian city in line with the US-backed Oslo Accords.

And if you need evidence for that, start with any number of Israeli hitchhikers picked up and murdered, or those two Israeli boys beaten to death in a cave, or those two Israeli reservists who took a wrong turn into Ramallah and were lynched, as those who killed them and gouged out their eyes held up their bloody hands to a crowd below hysterical with its own happiness and hate, or those four little Jewish girls sitting in their car, methodically shot to death, one by one, by one more brave hero — hailed as a hero, held up as a model — of the “Palestinian resistance.”

BETHLEHEM – Muslim street peddlers here bombarded tourists with discounted souvenirs in Manger Square – the hub of Bethlehem’s holiday activity – setting up shop in front of Christian stores some of whose owners complained their businesses were being hijacked.

“Tourism is up this year. Christians are visiting from all over. They come out of the Church of the Nativity and before they arrive at my store they’ve already been approached by a half-dozen Muslim vendors selling the same stuff but cheaper,” said the manager of one shop situated across from the Church of the Nativity alongside Manger Square.

Hate preacher Omar Bakri, who is barred from Britain, is calling on Brits to boycott Christmas.

Using the internet to post a rant against the festive season, Bakri claims Christmas should be “completely forbidden”.

In another chilling post the radical cleric said Christmas Day would be the perfect day to launch a terror attack on the UK.

He said: “To have Christmas tree, visit so-called Christmas Father – that is completely forbidden.

“Make sure you do not watch TV. Do not let them hear jingle bells. Do not send your children on Christmas trip.”

Bakri’s previous vile rants included his belief that the British public and the Government were responsible for the 7/7 London bombings.

In 2005 he was excluded by the then Home Secretary Charles Clarke from returning to Britain.

The move came after Bakri reportedly said he had left Britain for good and intended to set up home in the Lebanon.

He was duly arrested by Lebanese security forces.

Bakri, 46, was the London-based spiritual leader of the extremist group Al-Muhajiroun while claiming benefits from social services.

Although the group had supposedly disbanded, Prime Minister Tony Blair said that its successor organisation would be outlawed.

The Syrian-born preacher moved to the UK in 1985 after being deported from Saudi Arabia because of his membership of a banned group there.

In 1996 he created Al-Muhajiroun (The Eyes and Ears of the Muslims), which praised the ‘Magnificent 19’ hijackers after September 11.

In October 2004, he announced he was disbanding Al-Muhajiroun in the interests of “unity in the Muslim world”.

But soon afterwards he led a demonstration outside the US Embassy in London in which protesters chanted the name of Al Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden and torched an American flag.

Bakri has seven children who were born in the UK and relied on benefits for the past 19 years.

DAVID HICKS’S mental condition is so fragile that – only five days before his scheduled release from jail – he suffers from agoraphobia and retreats to the kind of solitary confinement he endured for five years in Guantanamo Bay.

The former Muslim extremist has suffered panic attacks and has ventured into the sunshine, in the prison yard, only once since his return to Australia in May this year to serve the balance of his nine-month sentence at Yatala Labour Prison in Adelaide. He could not cope and preferred the enclosed prison and artificial lighting, where he felt more safe.

“He tried to go out but he just said everything closed in on him,” his father, Terry Hicks, told the Herald.

The long night of the ‘shrinking horizons’

Hicks’s agoraphobia and panic attacks are hallmarks of prisoners who have spent prolonged periods in confined isolation. Professor Mullen said he would be suffering psychological damage from his trauma, which included being imprisoned in a container in the hot sun, believing he had been left there to die.

“Your horizons shrink and shrink and your world becomes your cell and everything outside of it becomes increasingly unfamiliar and frightening,” Professor Mullen said. “They become not just de-skilled but they lose all of the ease with which we deal with strangers and strange situations. Take them out in the street and they become terrified. Give them a simple task to do like buying something in a shop and it is just overwhelming, difficult and confusing.”

Haneef ‘won’t return unless safety guaranteed’

Former Gold Coast doctor Mohamed Haneef says he is still angry with Australian authorities about the way they treated him.

Earlier this year, Dr Haneef was arrested on a terrorism-related charge and spent two weeks in custody.

The charge was later dropped but former immigration minister Kevin Andrews cancelled his visa on character grounds.

Last week a full bench of the Federal Court upheld an earlier decision to reinstate the visa.

Dr Haneef says he misses his job at the Gold Coast Hospital, but he will not come back to Australia from India without the approval of his wife and family and a safety guarantee from the authorities.

“If my family decides I would go back there, we would need reassurance from the authorities who are there that there wouldn’t be any harm to us or any problems in our safety,” he said.

RIGHT-WING nationalists hope to use opposition to a proposed Islamic school southwest of Sydney as a springboard into local government.

The Australia First organisation, run in NSW by Jim Saleam, has been advertising for members in the town of Camden, where the Quranic Society wants to build a college for 1200 Muslim students.

Mr Saleam yesterday said his organisation would hold public meetings in Camden to build opposition to the school. Australia First planned to run a candidate for Camden Council in September elections, he said.

Mr Saleam, who was jailed for 3 1/2 years in 1991 for possessing a firearm and organising a shotgun attack on the home of Eddie Funde, the African National Congress’s Australian representative, said the proposed school was an exercise in “culture busting”.

Describing Camden as an Anglo-Saxon community, he yesterday told The Australian the school would be the start of an unwelcome Muslim campaign to “smash up the homogeneity of the area”. Mr Saleam was involved in the 2005 Cronulla race riots, claiming his organisation had recruited 120 members for the mob demonstration.

Something that this agenda driven journo, Ean Higgins, conveniently omits. The real Cronulla riots started when the Muhammedan mobs came charging out of the mosques, raced 70 cars at high speed through the suburbs, shot up and firebombed 4 churches, smashed  a hundred cars and started bashing and stabbing innocent Australians at random, while the police stood by doing nothing.

The proposed Islamic school at Camden is becoming a state political issue. It has split one of the longest-established minor parties in the NSW upper house, Reverend Fred Nile’s Christian Democrats.

Mr Nile addressed a rowdy anti-school meeting in Camden last Wednesday, saying the proposal would force thousands of Muslims on to the mainly Christian semi-rural community.

But the only other member of the Christian Democrats to hold a seat in the NSW parliament, the Reverend Gordon Moyes, yesterday said Mr Nile had gone against a recent party state executive reaffirming no opposition to Islamic schools. He hinted he would try to persuade the state executive to sanction Mr Nile.

The school proposal is expected to come before Camden council early next year for planning approval.

Camden Mayor Chris Patterson yesterday expressed concern that the issue was becoming a drawcard for right-wing groups.

“What we don’t want is other organisations attempting to use this as a national issue or an immigration issue,” he said.

NSW police are understood to be worried about the prospect of ethnic violence, holding a confidential meeting with councilors and community leaders late last week.

Of about 3500 public submissions concerning the school, all but about 20 had opposed it, Mr Patterson said.

Premier Morris Iemma yesterday said he was “aware of the opposition” to the school but added that “some of the scenes from (the public meeting on Wednesday) were disturbing”.

Opposition Leader Barry O’Farrell concurred with Mr Iemma in saying the proposed school should be assessed according to planning laws, and attacked Mr Nile for stirring up religious tension. “It’s as dumb as pigs’ heads on stakes,” Mr O’Farrell said of Mr Nile’s contribution, referring to a recent incident where anti-school activists placed such macabre objects at the proposed site.

The report obtained by The Weekend Australian says AFIC, which advises the Howard Government on Islamic issues, should seek legal advice about the $900,000 in rent it charges the school a year – up to four times more than average commercial rates.

The private school, which receives more public funds than any other in NSW, is situated on land owned by AFIC. While it operates as a separate non-profit organisation, it has four AFIC executives or office holders on its governing board.

AFIC charges the school rent, accounting fees, cleaning costs and other charges which provide two-thirds of AFIC’s budget of more than $2 million a year.

The school receives $11 million a year from the federal Government on condition the funds are used only for educational purposes and the school only uses surplus profits for its own activities.

But the investigation into AFIC’s finances by forensic accountant Robert Smith reveals that the rental income is used to support the political activities of dozens of Muslim groups in the country.

“Arguably there is a diversion of ‘profit’ from the school to AFIC,” Mr Smith warns in his report, prepared for AFIC.

“Such a diversion is what I have speculated that governments will be concerned about – educational funding being diverted to other entities for purposes other than education.”

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — A Saudi terrorism suspect facing possible charges before a military tribunal at Guantanamo has been identified as a brother-in-law of one of the Sept. 11 hijackers.

Ahmed Mohammed Ahmed Haza al-Darbi, who is accused of helping to organize an al-Qaida plot to attack a ship, is a brother-in-law of Khalid al-Mihdhar, a Saudi who was one of the hijackers who crashed a plane into the Pentagon, the military said in a statement late Friday.

Al-Darbi, 32, faces possible charges that include conspiracy and providing support to terrorism and could be sentenced to up to life in prison if convicted by the military court at the U.S. Navy base in southeast Cuba.

Prosecutors have drawn up the charges and informed the detainee of the accusations against him, but military legal authorities are still reviewing the case and he has not yet been formally charged.

The military says al-Darbi was a trained al-Qaida operative who met with Osama bin Laden and helped organize a plot to attack a ship off Yemen or in the Strait of Hormuz. The military did not say whether his relationship with al-Mihdhar is connected to the accusations against him.

Al-Mihdhar and another hijacker lived in San Diego, before they boarded American Airlines Flight 77 on Sept. 11, 2001, as part of a team that crashed it into the Pentagon, killing 190 people on the ground and on the plane.

The U.S. holds about 290 men on suspicion of terrorism or links to al-Qaida or the Taliban at Guantanamo and authorities say they plan to charge between 80 and 90 before military tribunals, including Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the admitted architect of the Sept. 11 attacks.

So far, the U.S. has filed charges against three detainees and has charges pending against al-Darbi and one other detainee.

Designed specifically for the occasion by Abdel Mun’em Ibrahim, the poster features a map of Israel that is entirely draped with a Palestinian keffiyeh scarf.
It also carries a drawing of a rifle as a symbol of the “armed struggle” against Israel.
The poster, which has been endorsed by the Fatah leadership, has already been posted on a number of Fatah-affiliated Web sites.

The underlying message of the poster is that Fatah, like Hamas, does not recognize Israel’s existence.

The emblem is in violation of Fatah’s declared policy, which envisions an independent Palestinian state alongside, and not instead of, Israel.

But Fatah must be made to answer whether it envisions that state as a final goal, or a means to an end. That should happen before the next jizya check is signed, but it won’t.

If the police moves in, like here in Berlin, they are quickly surrounded by large mobs of violent attackers who will go to any length to help the arrested culprits break free.

Traffic wardens ‘ turn blind eye’ at mosque

WORSHIPPERS at Bury mosques were given special treatment by parking wardens – on official orders.

Staff were told to “turn a blind eye” at parking offences by Councillor Bob Bibby, leader of Bury Council.

The revelation has annoyed local Labour councillor John Byrne, who accused the Tories of trying to “curry favour” with one section of the community.

Coun Byrne complained that areas near the Yarwood Street and Parker Street mosques were being left alone, while neither the police nor East ward councillors including him knew about it.

“I have no problem in varying parking orders if it’s right, but not if it’s done unilaterally,” he told last week’s council meeting. “I want to be consulted, and the whole council should know about it.”

Coun Bibby said that he visited a mosque and had promised to look at parking problems in the area. “It’s wrong to say that any alterations have happened,” he said. “At the end of Ramadan and the start of Eid, I was asked if there was anything we could do in regard to parking restrictions. I asked our parking people, and we are discussing schemes.

“We thought it was appropriate to turn a blind eye at that particular time. This was suggested by our parking regulators, and I am quite proud that we did it.”

After the meeting, Coun Byrne said: “What are we going to turn a blind eye to next? not paying your rent for six months? Where do you stop? It’s political.

“Im quite amenable to looking at it, but it has to be done for the whole borough and for all religions, not just on one person’s say-so.”

CBS/AP) Tony Blair refused to discuss religion when he was the British Leader. Now he has done more than talk about it – he’s become a Catholic.

The former British Prime Minister has officially converted from the Anglican Church of England to Catholicism, reports CBS News correspondent Larry Miller.

His spokesman said he was formally converted at a chapel in London Friday night.

“It can be confirmed that Tony Blair has been received into full communion with the Catholic Church by Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O’Connor,” the head of the church in England and Wales, the church said in a statement.

“I’m very glad to welcome Tony Blair into the Catholic Church,” the statement quoted Murphy-O’Connor as saying.

It said he had been a regular worshipper at Mass with his family and in recent months has been following a program leading to his reception into the church.

There had long been speculation that Blair planned to convert to Catholicism. Blair’s wife Cherie is Catholic, as are their children who attend a parochial school.

This summer Blair, who is now a Middle East peace envoy, had a private meeting in June with Pope Benedict XVI about the switch, but he waited until he was out of office to convert.

There has never been a Catholic British Prime Minster.

Earlier this year, the former prime minister told the BBC that he had avoided talking about his religious views while in office for about 10 years for fear of being labeled “a nutter.”

Rice: US has ‘no permanent enemies’

“They must choose cooperation not confrontation with the international community,” Rice said.

The United States doesn’t have permanent enemies, we’re too great a country for that,” she told reporters at a State Department press conference.

But she stressed that neither North Korea nor Iran would benefit from closer relations with the U.S. unless they come clean about their weapons intentions.

The third member of the “axis of evil,” Saddam Hussein’s Iraq, did not do so to Bush’s satisfaction and was invaded in 2003, although no weapons of mass destruction were found. The administration has said it wants to deal diplomatically with the threats it sees from North Korea and Iran.

Rice repeated calls for North Korea to honor its pledge to provide a complete declaration of its atomic programs and to disable all nuclear weapons facilities by year’s end, although she left open the possibility Pyongyang would miss the deadline for disabling nuclear sites.

“We have been very clear that we expect a declaration from North Korea that is complete and accurate,” Rice said, reiterating Washington’s position that the country must describe all of its nuclear activities, including possible sales of equipment to other nations and its alleged dabbling in uranium enrichment to complement a known plutonium program.

Rice would not comment on a report about the discovery by U.S. scientists of uranium traces on aluminum tubes in North Korea, apparently contradicting Pyongyang’s claim that its acquisition of the tubes was for conventional purposes. Such tubes could be used in the process of converting hot uranium gas into fuel for nuclear weapons, according to the report in Friday’s Washington Post.

Rice said, “We have long been concerned about highly enriched uranium as an alternative (nuclear weapons) route in North Korea.”

The declaration is due by Dec. 31, which is also the deadline for disabling North Korea’s plutonium plant at Yongbyon. However, diplomats have said the North would likely not be safely able to complete one key disablement step — removing the fuel rods from its reactor — for several months.

“I sincerely hope it will be by the end of the year, but the key is to get this process right,” Rice said.

If North Korea meets its commitments, the U.S. has said it will remove the North from terrorism and sanctions blacklists and enter into talks to forge a permanent peace deal to officially end the Korean War.

On Iran, Rice said, “I continue to say that if Iran will just do the one thing that is required of it by the Security Council resolutions that have been passed — and that is suspend its enrichment and reprocessing activities — then I’m prepared to meet my counterpart any place and anytime and anywhere and we can talk about anything.”

She warned the Iranians would not get a pass and sidestepped a question about whether “anywhere” would include the Iranian capital of Tehran.

How much damage is done to the educational system, once the pride of France, the product of careful thought by nineteenth-century pedagogues (every little town has a “Jules-Ferry” school, to honor the most famous one), because undisciplined and even violent Muslim students intimidate not only non-Muslim French students, but the teachers too. They refuse to read about, inter alia, Voltaire, French Kings, the Holocaust, World War II, or anything that they think is purely a matter for Infidels, or might evoke sympathy for Jews, or might be associated with anti-Islamic attitudes (Voltaire is disliked because of his play “Mahomet”). How much has life in France been degraded by the fact of large-scale Muslim immigration?

And what intelligent Frenchman today would or could disagree with the observation that the large-scale presence of Muslims in European countries has led to a situation that is far more unpleasant, expensive, and physically dangerous for its Infidel indigenous inhabitants (and for non-indigenous immigrants who are not Muslims), than would be the case without such a large-scale presence?

Pakistan: The New Taliban

There are as many as 10,000 Islamic schools in Karachi alone. 

The maulana on his tour insisted that the religious school was not a training ground for militants as people in the West thought. He was right in one sense: There were no weapons lying around. But the Islamic schools, even those without direct links to violence, promote an ideology that provides religious justification for violent attacks. An entire generation of Pakistanis is growing up in these madrassas, devoid of any critical thinking, and developing severe hatred for anything Western.

These Pakistanis are the backbone of the religious parties and they have the street power to paralyze cities.

In 2002, President Musharraf vowed to reform the madrassa system and its curriculum. Foreign students were to be registered with the government and the classroom content was to be vetted. Five years later, his plans have failed. Maulana Ghayas declared that the president could not control the madrassas because they were not funded by the government and did not rely on their resources. “We are an independent body,” he told me. “We rely on private donations, how can the president control us? We will never listen to him.”

At the madrassa I met 25-year-old Khan Sahab, an Afghani by birth, who told me that Pakistan’s true identity had been distorted by President Musharraf. “He thinks that Kamal Ataturk [the father of the modern Turkish republic] should be Pakistan’s mascot. Our ideal is our Prophet Mohammad, not some secular Turkish man.” Khan had spent the past four years studying at this madrassa, and he hoped that the headmaster would win the elections. “President Musharraf has women on television, there is no Shariah law here, women can walk around amongst men, we will change all of that when our leaders come to power. That is the true destiny of Pakistan.”

The party’s leader, Maulana Fazlur Rehman, is a suave politician and is not opposed to working with the more secular parties in Pakistani politics, his followers are more hard line. They want an Islamic Shariah-run government more severe than Saudi Arabia’s.

Today’s Iranian leadership is quite unpopular with its growing younger generation — the Mullahs are attempting to reclaim this group one textbook at at a time.

This is becoming a common scene in Iran. Pro-democracy Protests against the ruling regime. Just last weekend Tehran University students waved signs that said “live free or die.”

In some ways, this is the new face of Iran– 70 percent of the population is under the age of 30. Many of these Iranians are hungry for the kind of freedoms Americans enjoy. But the Iranian government has other ideas.

“Imagine 225,000, 250,000 even 100,000 kids who have been taught to hate America, hate the West, get ready for martyrdom,” Shayan Arya said.

Shayan Arya’s family left Iran when he was a teenager. He says the government’s educational curriculum teaches children as young as first grade to prepare for war and seek martyrdom.

“You are responsible for learning it–you get tested on it, you have to study it, you have to write papers on it, you have to answer to your teachers, he said.

The Institute for Monitoring Peace and Cultural Tolerance recently gave CBN News an exclusive look at some Iranian textbooks. All non-Muslims are portrayed as evil — especially the U.S. and Israel.

A seventh-grade textbook encourages students to “not cease.until the redeeming message of ‘there is no god but Allah’ is realized throughout the whole world.”

The real reason Israeli soldiers don’t rape Palestinian women

We take a break for a rare political post.

The newspaper Makor Rishon writes about a recent study authored by researcher Tal Nitzan and published by the Hebrew University’s Shein Center for Social Studies. According to the study, Israeli soldiers refrain from raping Palestinian women in the “occupied territories” not because they are more humane. In fact the opposite is true, says researcher Tal Nitzan. Israeli soldiers don’t rape the women because they have been taught to dehumanize Palestinian women. Another reason is that the soldiers don’t want the Arab population to increase through pregnancies as a result of the rapes; according to Nitzan that would be considered an ason leumi–a national tragedy.

The Israeli Sociology Association awarded the report a mark of excellence.

Here’s a quote from the study:

As Israelis/Jews, who view themselves as moral, the soldiers find it difficult to commit martial rapes. It seems that (in Bosnia) men identified themselves as Serbians through committing public group rapes of Bosnian women; Jews identify themselves as non-rapists, non-assimilationists, as a nation unique in the embrace of God. Rape and non-rape are two sides of the same coin, which in different situations the use of either one can lead to the same results. [emphasis and translation mine]

Nitzan notes that the Israeli army is the only one not to commit mass rapes when it occupies another country.

Somehow I doubt that Nitzan would praise Israeli soldiers if they were in the habit of raping Palestinian women.
