Libya’s Muammar Gaddafi is coming to France next week and has made clear want he wants: a tent to live in, 200 attractive French women, and some nuclear energy.

Col. Gaddafi, who has been Libya’s dictator for almost four decades, has been known for bizarre activities. Reportedly he likes to dress up in drag.

Gaddafi is also said to suffer from claustrophobia and prefers to live in tents. The French government has acceded to his wish and has set one up next to the Hotel Marigny, the country’s official guest house.

According to French media, the dictator also wants to “meet 200 Frenchwomen and to go to a Renault factory to see ‘the working class.'”

France has been accommodating to Gaddafi as he is set to sign a nuclear energy deal.

The new French president, Nicolas Sarkozy, has moved rapidly to sign up mega nuclear deals with a host of Arab countries.

In the past week, France signed such a deal with Algeria, and this past October one with Morroco. He is reportedly offering help to the Saudis to build a nuclear reactor.

The deals mean big bucks for the French economy. But some are worried. Germany said that “the risk of proliferation rises with every country that uses nuclear energy.”

PLO representatives will try to raise $7.1 billion (4.8 billion euros) in hand-outs at an upcoming meeting of donors in Paris, according to the PLO economy minister on Saturday. The Arab organization says the funds will be used to boost the local Arab economy and to increase the 2008 to 2010 budget. Included in the plan will be to pay salaries and fund armed forces.

Sarkozy faces antisemitic jibes in Algeria

Cowardly, shameful behavior by France’s new PM

French President Nicolas Sarkozy’s first official visit to Algeria this week was overshadowed after he became the target of antisemitic insults.

Only a few days prior to the visit, Algerian minister Mohamed Cherif Abbés claimed in the El–Khabar newspaper that Mr Sarkozy had been elected through the manoeuvres of “the Jewish lobby” and made reference to the president’s Jewish origins.

The Algerian authorities refused to apologise for the assault, and Socialist leaders Jean-Christophe Cambadélis and Pierre Moscovici pleaded for a rescheduling of the trip, stating the attack was “intolerable”.

However, Mr Sarkozy decided to push forward with the meeting, attempting to consolidate tense bilateral ties and to sign $5 billion (£2.5bn) of energy deals.

Mr Abbés’s comments were not the first antisemitic attacks launched against Mr Sarkozy. Extremist leader Jean-Marie Le Pen has pointed at Mr Sarkozy’s ancestors, saying “he is Jewish through his mother”, and several weeks ago Mr Sarkozy was even accused of spying for Israel’s Mossad intelligence service. But Mr Abbés’s assault was the first public antisemitic attack made by an Algerian official and was followed by the Algerian authorities’ refusal to allow entrance to one of Mr Sarkozy’s guests on the visit, a French-Jewish singer of Algerian descent, Enrico Macias. The French Jewish umbrella group CRIF said it was “disgusted” by these decisions.

The attacks may have been intentional, coming at a time when Algeria is trying to make its mark in the region. Mr Sarkozy, who has strengthened relations with Morocco, Algeria’s rival, wants to develop a Mediterranean Union that would include Israel, but Algeria prefers to keep Israel out.

However, the most obvious issues of discord were France’s past colonial rule in North Africa and Mr Sarkozy’s refusal to issue an official apology, as well as his immigration policy, which has been strongly criticised in Algeria.

The French president chose to remain focused on his mission, condemning colonisation but refusing to issue an excuse. He replied to the minister’s antisemitic attacks in his speech, calling for a fight against racism, antisemitism and Islamophobia.

“Nothing resembles antisemitism more than the hatred of Islam,” Mr Sarkozy told the Algerian Parliament. “Antisemitism and Islamophobia have the same face, the face of foolishness and hatred. We can’t explain them, we simply have to fight against them.”

A MUSLIM school in Kenwick has been raided by police and shut down by WA Education Minister Mark McGowan. The school’s head faces a stealing charge.

Mr McGowan said he had taken the extraordinary step of closing Muslim Ladies’ College in Kenwick because of allegations, including fraud and the use of unregistered teachers who were focusing mainly on religion, rather than the WA curriculum.

The school’s acting director, Zubair Sayed, appeared in East Perth Magistrates Court on Saturday charged with stealing.

The court was told the charge related to an alleged theft offence — of $355,934 — in April, when Mr Sayed, of Sarah Close, Canning Vale, was a company director of Muslim Links Australia Ltd.

It is alleged the school was overclaiming for state and federal government funds for students. Police prosecutor Sgt Scott McCormick told the court that detectives had discovered the money had been sent to Pakistan.

“This is a matter which is of extreme seriousness, whereby Mr Sayed obtained public money from the commonwealth by deceit,” Sgt McCormick said. “The state wishes to put on the record that this is a very serious charge.”

The court was told that Mr Sayed wrote a Commonwealth Bank cheque for money from the Federal Government that was meant for the Muslim Ladies’ College to educate students.

At the time, Mr Sayed’s brother was principal of the college.

Magistrate Vicki Stewart granted Mr Sayed bail, with conditions he surrender his passport, not be within 1km of international sea or air ports, report to Cannington police station each Wednesday and reside at his home address.

He was released on $100,000 bail and a $100,000 surety to reappear in Perth Magistrates Court on January 2 next year.

On Friday, Mr McGowan told The Sunday Times: “I want to make it clear that this decision (to close the school) has not been made because this is a Muslim school.

“This decision has been made because this is a school that is not educating students properly.

“An investigation into the operations of the college by the Department of Educational Services began in December 2006 — following complaints about the conduct of the principal-administrator, staffing of the college and the educational program.”

Key areas investigated included whether teachers were registered, the appropriateness of qualifications of teachers, inadequate educational leadership and standard of education, and the sufficiency of the school’s resources.

Mr McGowan said other concerns were about the college’s governance structure, the condition of buildings, and facilities and enrolment, and attendance procedures.

He said it was found that teachers were inexperienced in teaching and understanding the curriculum framework, and students weren’t being taught all required subjects.

“The college has employed a number of unregistered teachers and many with limited authority to teach,” he said. “Teachers are not spending 50 per cent of the school day on literacy and numeracy, as required.

“Instead (they) spend a large amount of time on religious studies. This is clearly unacceptable and seriously damaging to the student’s academic well-being.

Mr McGowan wrote to the school’s governing body to notify them of his decision, which took effect from Friday.

He said enrolments had declined in the past year, from about 90 students at the beginning of 2007 to about 50 or 60 students currently.

Four students at Toronto’s Osgoode Hall Law School are accusing Maclean’s magazine of violating their human rights over an article titled The Future Belongs to Islam.

They’ve filed complaints with the federal, Ontario and British Columbia human rights commissions over the October 2006 article.

The article discusses the high birth rate among Muslims and speculates that Islamic people could become the majority population in Europe. It also says some Muslims are violent radicals.

Naseem Mithoowani, one of the Osgoode Hall law students bringing forward the complaint, said the article was one of a series of articles offensive to Muslims.

“This isn’t just one article in a context of fair and balanced media. This really was the straw that broke the camel’s back because it’s one in a string of articles that are anti-Islam and anti-Muslim,” she told CBC News.

* Being anti-Islamic is a matter of self-preservation, because Islam wants us dead or converted or in dhimmitude-slavery, resistance is not an option, but every citizens duty.

Khurrum Awan, another of the students, said the group will argue before the commissions that such articles tend to subject Muslims to hatred or contempt.

“To say that we share the same basic goals as terrorists … if you look at the theme of the article in the context, it is putting that label on all of us and I felt personally victimized,” he said.

Maclean’s said it stands behind the writer of the article, Mark Steyn, and it is confident the human rights commissions will find no merit in the complaint.

Alan Borovoy of the Canadian Civil Liberties Association said the organization is concerned about the human rights complaints process.

It’s too easy to claim an article may subject a group to hate or contempt under commission rules, Borovoy said.

“Even truthful articles describing some of the awful situations in this world could run afoul of this law, it is so broad and such a potential threat to freedom of speech,” he said.

The excerpt from Mark Steyn’s America Alone that ran in Maclean’s last year is far more blatantly racist than I figured it would be when I began reading it. I knew Steyn was a bigot, with a 1920s obsession with demographic decline. (Cf. Tom Buchanan in Gatsby, who can’t stop talking about Rise of the Colored Empires, “by this man Goddard.”) But I imagined Steyn was more adroit in his use of code words and deniability feints. No! “Just look at the development within Europe, where the number of Muslims is expanding like mosquitoes” is merely the most spectacular example of – not code words. I’m not completely shocked that Steyn would write with such frank bigotry, or that Regnery would publish it. I’m somewhat surprised that an establishment organ like Maclean’s would run it.

Nor am I surprised actual existing Muslim Canadians would take offense at the article. What is it precisely about this statement that makes it “blatantly racist”? That a Euro-Muslim imam uttered the words? Or that an “Anglo American” (if I can be said to count as such) was culturally insensitive enough to reveal the mullah’s words to a wider audience? Is the problem Krekar’s “frank bigotry”, or “Anglo Americans” boorish enough to let the cat out the bag?

Or, if that’s too much for him, perhaps he could at least issue a clarification.

THE head of a race relations watchdog has warned against labelling mosques as potential breeding grounds for terrorism.

Zafar Ali, chairman of Slough Race Equality Council, spoke out as British Muslim leaders announced new guidelines for mosques.

The guidelines are a response to the Government asking Muslim leaders to find ways of curbing extremism and allowing more young people and women into them.

Mr Ali welcomed the involvement of the Muslim community in drawing up the new guidelines.

But he said: “I am always suspicious when people start interfering in the running of religious institutions. I am pleased that these guidelines have come from the Muslim community and this is not Government led.

“It is also worth stressing that it is individuals that cause terrorism, not mosques. People should not be pointing the finger at them. It is only some individuals who frequent them who go on to commit acts of terrorism.”

But critics say that mosques fail to serve communities. Ministers believe mosques could be important in providing a location for extremists to recruit young Muslims.

Plans to ease headscarf ban in Turkey

Turkey’s ruling AK Party, which has Islamist roots, signalled plans to ease a ban on the wearing of the Islamic headscarf in universities under a new draft constitution.

ANKARA, Turkey — Turkey has launched an investigation into alleged collusion between police officers and at least one of the suspects charged with killing three Christians earlier this year at a publishing house that produces Bibles, an official said Saturday.
Two senior police inspectors will be assigned to investigate whether any officers provided assistance to the suspects, an Interior Ministry official said on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media. He did not provide further details.

On her first day at Basra University this year a man came up to Zeena, a 21-year-old Christian woman, and three other Christian girls and ordered them to cover their heads with a hijab, or Islamic headscarf.

“We didn’t listen to him, and thought he might just be some extremist student representing only himself,” she said. The next day Zeena and two of her friends returned to class with uncovered heads.

This time a man in the black clothes of the Shia militia stopped them at the entrance and took them aside. “He said, ‘We asked you yesterday to wear a hijab, so why are you and your friends not covering your hair?’. He was talking very aggressively and I was scared,” Zeena recalled.

The girls explained that they were Christians and that their faith did not call for headscarves. “He said: ‘Outside this university you are Christian and can do what you want; inside you are not. Next time I want to see you wearing a hijab or I swear to God the three of you will be killed immediately’,” Zeena recalled. Terrified, the girls ran home. They now wear the headscarf all the time.

Despite being promised protection by the Dutch, the Netherlands has decided to stop footing the bill for her security. Ali, having obviously since withdrawn from parliament, now resides in Washington, where she has been all but abandoned. In spite of this, she continues to be perhaps the strongest, most eloquent and certainly the most determined advocate of free speech and women’s rights in the Islamic world that still draws breath.

Though her bravery may be limitless, her security detail is definitely not. Ali must now pay for her security measures by herself. If she cannot afford to defend herself against those Muslim fanatics destined to bring her to justice for her apostasy, she is essentially consigned to the fate of Theo van Gogh. It is because of this that I ask you, the reader, to stand up to this savage bullying and defend free speech by donating whatever you can afford to her security trust.

Here we have a person who has been through more than any of us will in an entire lifetime. She has had to fight tooth and nail for the very freedoms we just assume upon birth. Ayaan Hirsi Ali has been combating a war on terror since before we were born. All she asks now is to speak her mind without fear of death.

Is that too much to ask?

JAKARTA, December 3 (Compass Direct News) – Attacking the house of a Baptist pastor and protesting the presence of a Catholic temple, radical Muslim groups got authorities to close down two churches in the past two weeks.

In Banten province, extremists from the Islamic Defender Forces (Front Pembela Islam, or FPI) on November 21 attacked the Tangerang home of the Rev. Bedali Hulu, pastor at Jakarta Christian Baptist Church (GKBJ), kicking out doors and windows, breaking glass and throwing the pastor’s belongings from the house. The church had been meeting in the pastor’s home.

At the time of the attack, only the pastor’s mother-in-law and a member of the church, Temaziduhu Laoli, were in the house, located at Perumahan Permata Sepatan, Desa Pisangan Jaya in Tangerang. Habib Muhammad Assegaf led the attack.

As a result of the attack and objections to the church, Rev. Hulu met with Pisangan Jaya village leaders on November 22 – with the result that officials asked him to leave the territory until tensions cooled. Activities at the church, which has a permit and is registered with Religious Affairs authorities, came to a halt.

“It’s okay for a while, but I’ll be back,” said Rev. Hulu. His wife and his mother-in-law were allowed to remain in their house.

Twenty Islamic organizations joined together in the Hague on Tuesday to demand respect for Islam, after the municipal museum intended to show an exhibition by Iranian Sooreh Hera showing homosexuals with masks of the prophet Mohammed.

According to the Muslim committee “Respect for you and me”, the museum was right in withdrawing the exhibition because the pictures were offending and polarizing. MuseumGoudA, the municipal museum of Gouda, has meanwhile announced it will exhibit the pictures. According to director Ranti Tjan, “Art cannot be rejected for political reasons”.

The committee will check if the statement by PVV leader Geert Wilders about Islam can be legally challenged. “Respect for you and me” also intends to fight against insulting statements for Muslims by other people.

A 23-year-old former Heathrow airport worker who stored military manuals and wrote poems celebrating the beheading of non-believers avoided prison yesterday.
Samina Malik, who called herself the “lyrical terrorist”, was the first woman convicted under section 58 of the Terrorism Act 2000 of possessing records likely to be useful in terrorism.

At the Old Bailey yesterday, Judge Peter Beaumont, the recorder of London, sentenced her to nine months’ prison, suspended for 18 months, and ordered her to carry out 100 hours of unpaid work.

“In my judgment your offence is on the margin of what this crime concerns,” he told Malik. He said she was of previously good character and from a “supportive and law-abiding family who are appalled by the trouble that you are in”.

* “Law abiding” Muslims abide by the laws of the sharia, of course.

While a custodial sentence was merited, she had already faced extremely rigorous bail conditions that were “tantamount to house arrest” and had spent five months in custody.

Attention during her trial focused on her poetry. One poem, How to Behead, asserted: “It’s not as messy or as hard as some may think/ It’s all about the flow of the wrist ... You’ll feel the knife hit the wind and food pipe/ But Don’t Stop/ Continue with all your might.”

Malik, who lived in Southall, west London, and worked airside at WH Smith at Heathrow, was also found to have written on the back of a till receipt: “The desire within me increases every day to go for martyrdom.”

Jonathan Sharp, prosecuting, told the jury that Malik visited a website linked to the jailed cleric Abu Hamza and stored material about weapons.

Malik insisted she had adopted her “lyrical terrorist” nickname because she thought it was “cool”, adding: “I am not a terrorist.” Outside court her solicitor, Iqbal Ahmed, read a statement on her behalf. “The jury found that she did not have the material for terrorist purposes which was an important part of her case,” he said. “She now wants to get on with her life.”

Inayat Bunglawala, of the Muslim Council of Britain, welcomed the decision to suspend the sentence. “Samina Malik was being prosecuted in effect for a thought crime because she had downloaded some material from the internet which anyone could download.”

The Crown Prosecution Service said: “Samina Malik was not prosecuted for writing poetry. Ms Malik was convicted of collecting information, without reasonable excuse, of a kind likely to be useful to a person committing or preparing an act of terrorism.”

A German Muslim group criticised Chancellor Angela Merkel on Thursday for suggesting that mosque minarets should not be higher than church steeples, saying it hoped this topic would not be used as a campaign issue.
Merkel, a Lutheran pastor’s daughter who grew up in communist East Germany, told a congress of her conservative Christian Democrats that “we must take care that mosque cupolas are not built demonstratively higher than church steeples”.

Mosque-building is a sensitive subject in Germany. Merkel’s fellow conservatives in Bavaria have been saying for months that minarets should not dwarf steeples. Local residents are up in arms about plans to build mosques in Berlin, Munich and Cologne.

Bekir Alboga, spokesman for the Coordination Council of Muslims, an umbrella organisation for Muslims in Germany, said he was worried that mosques could become a campaign issue in state elections coming up in some parts of Germany.

“We must be on guard against sparking artificial discussions for political purposes which have little connection with reality,” Alboga said in a statement.

“Comments like Chancellor Merkel’s (about Mosques) … take a back seat to the expert opinions of building authorities, who base their decisions on local conditions and consensus between the citizens and mosque communities,” he said.

Merkel has organised several conferences to try to improve relations between Germany’s largely Christian population and its roughly 3.2 million Muslims. One of the subjects under discussion is mosque building.

Alboga said Muslims and Christians have more important issues to deal with than arguing about the height of minarets and steeples.

“Parts of the world are on fire,” he said. “Instead of putting those out we’re fighting over secondary issues.”

Women are forbidden to drive, to show their head and to speak in public, and to shake a man’s hand. On television, preachers incite husbands to beat their wives “for their own good”. Saudi journalists describe the countless prohibitions facing Muslim women in their country and appeal for a distinction between religious truths and social customs.

Riyadh (AsiaNews/Agencies) – Without permission, women cannot even drive a car or change the colour of their clothes, and television preachers warn that women who shake a man’s hand are committing “adultery of the hand”. Citing such examples, Saudi journalists have criticized the social mentality that rules the relationship between wife and husband.

In the Saudi daily Al-Watan, Fatima Al-Faqih described the many bans imposed on Saudi women: “[They] are forbidden to drive, forbidden to travel without permission [of their husband or father or whoever has authority over them] , forbidden to stay alone at a hotel without permission, forbidden to name their own children without [a man’s] consent… forbidden to leave their homes or to take a job without permission… forbidden to change the color of their abayas [traditional, long tunic], forbidden to go to school or to the university without permission.”

In some Saudi cities, a woman cannot even “show her face”, she cannot get married without permission nor can she “remain married if one of her male relatives decides that her husband’s lineage is inferior to hers… nor can she sue for divorce without apologizing and paying a fine.” Without permission, she “cannot keep her children after the divorce… hold a senior position in the private or public sectors… annoy her husband, and finally, a woman’s voice is considered [a form of] defilement, and she is forbidden to speak in public.”

Many men, writes Hasna Al-Quna’ir on the Al-Riyadh daily, justify the inferiority of women by resorting to a “distorted reading of the sayings of the Prophet”, a tactic often used by television preachers. For example, there is a verse that says: “A tribe that nominates a woman [as leader] will not succeed”. The journalist explained that on the strength of this saying, an expert said on television that wives should not be asked for their views as they were completely emotional. Another television expert, to “defend the virtue of women”, “incites fathers, brothers and husbands”, telling them that “a girl who is not beaten from an early age grows up to be a rebellious woman, difficult to control” and that “a woman who leaves her home without a veil is like a woman who goes out naked”. The same preacher warned Muslim women that not covering their heads was “the main reason that women are seduced and fall [into sin].” Another preacher said the woman “who shakes the hand of a man that is not her husband is guilty of… ‘adultery of the hand’”. The journalist said that the sayings of the Prophet needed to be considered in the “historical circumstances and particular context” in which they were pronounced and that “religious duties” had to be distinguished from norms of social conduct that were controversial and not subject to dogmas of faith, “like the custom of covering the face”.

Due to this culture, writes Maha Al-Hujailan on the Al-Watan, “women live in constant fear… that the husband may take another wife.” “Only women living in this fear properly fulfill the role of the wife, while a woman who feels assured that her husband will not take another wife comes to disdain her husband and her family life…This culture causes a women to feel mentally and psychologically inferior, like a quarrelsome child who must be constantly supervised, intimidated and punished into performing her duties.”

The journalist said that women who felt this way may even believe that “a good man who respects them is nothing but a weak and unstable man… In their opinion, an ideal man is a violent one who humiliates his wife.”

Hasna Al-Quna’ir added: “The woman is the victim of this insular culture, and her only salvation would be a reorganization of the cultural structure of [our] entire society.”

Muslim Woman Sues San Bernardino County Over Religious Freedom in Jail

LOS ANGELES— A 29-year-old Muslim woman who was forced by deputies to remove her religious head covering while she was in custody in San Bernardino County’s West Valley Detention Center, filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court Wednesday asserting that her religious freedom rights were violated under the First Amendment by San Bernardino county sheriff’s deputies.

Jameelah Medina, of Rialto, was arrested at the Pomona station of Metrolink’s commuter rail system on Dec. 7, 2005, for having an invalid train pass. She was taken to the West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga for processing.

Medina, who was born in the United States and raised in a Muslim family, wears a headscarf known as a hijab to cover her hair, ears, neck and part of her chest. Many Muslim women, like Medina, believe that they should be covered at all times in the presence of men who are not members of their immediate family.

Despite her repeated requests to keep her head covered during her day-long incarceration, she was forced to remove her hijab in the presence of men she did not know and to remain uncovered for much of the day.

“I tried to tell the officer not to make me remove it because it is part of my religion,” said Medina. “Even after the officer had searched me and found nothing, she would not give me back my scarf. I felt humiliated, exposed.”

Medina was never prosecuted in connection with this arrest.

The lawsuit is being filed by the American Civil Liberties Union and the ACLU of Southern California.

The message urging the jihadi attack on the Order of Malta – nowadays a charitable organisation – follows the publication of an editorial in the United Arab Emirates daily al-Bayan, by Jordanian MP Jamal Muhammad Abidat entitled ‘The Knights of Malta – more than a conspiracy’.

The Order of Malta retains its claim of sovereignty under international law and has been granted permanent observer status at the United Nations. It issues its own passports, stamps and coins and has formal diplomatic relations with 99 states.

In the article, Abidat gives a Muslim interpretation of the Order’s history, describing the role played by the Knights of Malta during the Crusades. Abidat says the Order is playing the same role in the Middle East today, citing the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan.

“The painful saga of modern Arab-Muslim history evokes the battles fought in Crusades of the 11th centry – when the Knights of Malta began their operations as a Christian militia whose mission it was to defend the land conquered by the Crusaders.”

She will even add, no doubt, that if things die down a bit, she wouldn’t hesitate to return to the Sudan and take up teaching again if she were asked to do so.

While the sentences of 14-19 years may seem light considering the horrific crime, the minister at large for Open Doors USA, a Christian ministry that has worked in the area of Indonesia where the attack happened, said it not only is a relatively severe penalty, it also is raising fears of violence as the Christmas season approaches.

Paul Estabrooks, of Open Doors USA told WND the sentences may appear light from a Western perspective. But he said in a culture dominated by Islam, it is a serious statement, and also will bring “some closure” for Christians in the region.

“The interesting thing is the timing,” he said. “The last few Christmases have been pretty violent (in the region). … There is some concern this would inflame the sectarian violence of the area again.”
