Fifty-five Saudi Arabian men who have been sent to their homeland from the U.S. military prison at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, will receive about $2,600 each to celebrate the upcoming Muslim holiday of Eid al-Fitr, a Saudi newspaper reported Saturday.
Saudi Interior Minister Prince Nayef bin Abdul Aziz also has granted the ex-Guantánamo prisoners temporarily release from detention centers in Saudi Arabia to spend time with their families during the holiday later this month, the Okaz newspaper reported.

The holiday marks the end of the holy fasting month of Ramadan.

The former captives are to return to police custody after Eid al-Fitr in mid-October and will be referred to Saudi courts at end of this month for upcoming trials, the paper said.

Just last month, U.S. authorities transferred 16 Saudis from the remote U.S. Navy base in Cuba to Saudi Arabia, the latest in a series of cascading transfers.

Fewer than 40 Saudi detainees remain in detention.

The U.S. practice of holding Saudis at Guantánamo has been a source of tension with Riyadh, a close U.S. ally and birthplace of al Qaeda founder Osama bin Laden.

Three Saudis captives have committed suicide inside the prison camp since it opened in 2002, according to the U.S. military. All three cases are being probed by the Naval Criminal Investigative Service, similar to the FBI.

Of the 759 men and teens who have been held at Guantánamo, 136 have been Saudis, the second-largest group behind Afghan nationals.

The largest concentration there today are citizens of Yemen, bin Laden’s ancestral homeland.

About 330 detainees remain in Guantánamo on suspicion of links to terrorism, al Qaeda or the Taliban. Few have ever been charged.

Students in Northern Kashmir today held demonstrations to decry a bar built in the shape of the holy Kaaba in New York.
Hundreds of students of the local Degree College took out a protest march through the streets of Baramulla town, chanting anti-American and pro-Islam slogans.

The students said that building a wine-shop or a bar like the Kaaba amounted to the desecration of the holy sites of Islam. “Muslims all over the world should protest at this,” they said.

They demanded that the US should apologise to the Muslim world over the Kaaba replica, and close down the bar immediately.
The procession dispersed after passing through various markets of the town.

Mustafa Ali, 36, ex con of Philadelphia, executed two retired Philadelphia police officers as they serviced a cash machine, police said.

“He follows the truck, he sees an opportunity and he takes it,” said the detective, who worked on the case but requested anonymity because he is not a supervisor and is not authorized to comment publicly.

Ali was scheduled to be arraigned later Saturday. He was arrested on an unrelated charge Friday afternoon and was later charged with two counts of murder, robbery, a firearms charge and other charges after giving a statement.

Ali previously served seven years in federal prison for bank robbery, the detective said. It was not clear if he had an attorney.

Cairo, Egypt (AHN) – Two Coptic Christians were found dead in a village 240 miles south of Cairo, police said. They added that they were investigating the incident as possible sectarian violence in the same village that witnessed some of the worst massacres seven years ago.

Police sources said they were investigating the deaths of Sadeq Ishaq, 45, and Karam Andraus, 40, who were shot to death on their farm in El Kosheh. The official added that investigators were attempting to determine if the murders were sectarian in nature.

In 2007, a dispute between Muslims and Coptic Christians in the village escalated into a full scale battle as armed gangs took up weapons against each other. The violence left 21 Christians and one Muslim dead.

Coptic Christians are generally estimated to make up around 10 percent of Egypt’s population. Often random incidents of violence have been construed as sectarianism by the media.

Florida group to protest Muslim day at Six Flags

Mr. Kaufman says the Islamic Circle of North America was founded three decades ago as an American arm of the terrorist group Muslim Brotherhood of Pakistan and funnels money to Hamas.

He said education, not turnout, is what’s important.

“We believe this organization is a threat to the city and a threat to the United States because of its ties to overseas terrorism, because of their financing of overseas terrorism,” he said.

Mr. Kaufman, the man organizing the Oct. 14 protest, said the goal of the placard-carrying demonstration is to wake up the public and the government. He said his group attempts to target radical Muslims, not all Muslims.

“I’m not somebody who revels in holding protests everywhere,” he said, “but I feel this is an effective way of notifying the public to what they have in their back yard as well as put pressure on the government to shut down these groups.”

The public, he said, should not be fooled by the innocent-sounding name of Muslim Family Day.

PARIS (EJP)—The head of a Jewish organization has called on France’s Interior Minister to ban a planned pro-Palestinian demonstration Saturday in a Paris suburb because of the risk of violence against Jewish worshippers.

In a letter to French Interior Minister Michèle Alliot-Marie, Shimon Samuels, director for international relations of the Paris-based Simon Wiesenthal Centre, warned of the “danger of a a mass demonstration Saturday, 6 October 2007, at 2 pm, in the Paris suburb of Argenteuil under the slogan ‘For the Liberation of Jerusalem and against its Judaization – Yom Al Qods’ (Jerusalem Day).”

The demonstration is organized by the party of Muslims in France as part of the ‘World Jerusalem Day’ initiated by Iran’s former spiritual leader, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini.

Samuels said: ‘This march, organized, inter alia, by extreme left
and Islamist groups – and advertised on their websites – is to pass a
synagogue on the final Sabbath of the Tabernacles Holy Days.”

The Centre urged that, “due to the risk of violence to the many Jewish worshippers and to the general public, the Minister should ban this demonstration.”

“Among the organizers are those who clearly seek a provocation which must be stopped to ensure public order,” Samuels added.

Censorship at Columbia

The New York Sun reports that Columbia University, which hosted Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad under the banner of ‘free speech’ and an ‘exchange of ideas’ ten days ago is far less accommodating to its own students’ exercise of their right of free speech.

A week after Columbia University termed itself a stronghold of free speech for hosting the Iranian dictator, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, a new documentary about censorship on college campuses claims that Columbia administrators demanded content review of all footage shot on its property in an effort to stifle an unflattering representation of the university.

“Indoctrinate-U,” which premiered at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., last Friday, claims that America’s colleges and universities bill themselves as bastions of reasoned debate even while enforcing political conformity by silencing viewpoints that they do not consider politically correct.

In deleted scenes posted on the Web site for the documentary, the director of the film, Evan Mahoney, recorded his dealings with administrators regarding the rules for filming at Columbia.

“The way I was treated was something out of an East German playbook,” Mr. Mahoney said during an interview yesterday, explaining the footage. “The university said there had to be a handler with me at all times. They wanted to have final content control. After I filmed with one of their handlers, I wouldn’t be allowed to release anything publicly unless they approved it. They said the amount of money to pay was dependent on what our point of view was.”

In footage posted on the film’s Web site, Mr. Maloney shows a Columbia administrator, filmed only from the neck down, saying that the content of the film needed to be approved so that the university was portrayed in “the best possible light.” He tells Mr. Mahoney that filming on campus costs $1,500 an hour.

A Columbia spokesman, Robert Hornsby, said the university does not perform content reviews of any footage filmed on campus. The employee who appears in the documentary no longer manages the film permits, and only Hollywood production companies pay the rate of $1,500 an hour to shoot on campus, he said.

Anti-Islamic Movements in Germany: “Islamophobic – and Proud of It”

Fundamentalist Christians are using populist slogans to incite against Muslims, whom they see as the new source of danger for Europe. The number of internet users who visit their websites is alarmingly high. Claudia Mende reports

The group calls itself “Deus Vult Caritatem” – Latin for “God wants love.” But it disseminates a fair amount of bad feeling. “Deus Vult Caritatem” caused uproar at a series of Munich city council information events in July. The Islam expert and lawyer Matthias Rohe held a talk on “The German constitution and sharia” which had to be broken off in a tumult. Several days later Rohe received a death threat via e-mail, and he published it on his homepage.

“Deus Vult Caritatem” was the title of a document issued by Pope Urban II in 1099, calling on the faithful to join the first Crusade and expel the Muslims from the Holy Land. The website of Deus Vult, which was launched at Easter 2007 to mark Pope Benedict XVI’s 80th birthday, issues a modern version of the same call to arms: “It is now high time to react once again and defend western civilisation as well as everything else which is threatened by radical Koran-Islam.”

The modern crusaders plan to save western civilisation from Islamisation by “an attempt to re-evangelise our own country, and a careful mission towards Mohammedans, whom we should try, in a peaceful and amicable way, to liberate from the embrace of ‘The Prophet.’”

Radical Christians are mobilising against Islam. “The groups may be small,” says Andreas Renz, in charge of interreligious dialogue at the Catholic Archdiocese of Munich, “but they exert an enormous amount of pressure with letters to newspapers, with telephone calls to the archdiocese and with their activities at public meetings. They create an atmosphere of insecurity and they do plenty of damage.”

While the two big churches in Germany, the Catholic and the Lutheran-reformed, aim to teach about Islam objectively, and while many communities are active in interreligious dialogue, fundamentalist Christians see Islam as the new threat to Europe. Andreas Renz believes they represent a broad spectrum, which stretches from the far right to the very centre of society.

Alarm grows over Muslim youth in Germany

Berlin (dpa) – German government talks with the Islamic community reflect growing concern in Berlin that the angry children of immigrants may turn to terrorism because they are excluded from German prosperity.

Government figures show there are up to 3.4 million people of Islamic heritage among Germany’s 82-million population.

State estimates indicate there are 2,500 mosques in Germany, many of them little more than large rented rooms in office buildings or former factories.

Most of the estimated 2,250 imams employed in Germany have been seconded to Germany from Turkey or Arab nations and the Islamic Conference is expected to discuss asking a German university to train home-grown imams.

The government says it is seeking a trade-off, where Germany changes some laws to accommodate Muslims while the Islamic community commits itself to German democracy.

Saint-Dizier, France – French police clashed overnight with youths who went on a rampage in a town in eastern France, prompting Interior Minister Michele Alliot-Marie to travel to the trouble spot.

Between 40 and 50 masked youths used metal bars to smash a firefighters’ vehicle and a police car dispatched to a shopping mall in Saint-Dizier, said Yves Guillot, the head of the Haute-Marne regional government.

The youths then fanned out across the town of 30 000 inhabitants, setting fire to two buildings, a car rental office and 16 vehicles. Police reinforcements were sent in to quell the violence.

“We are trying to understand what happened. We have had clashes in our town but not on this scale,” said Mayor Francois Cornut-Gentille.

Earlier Dutch justice minister Ernst Hirsch Ballin wrote Ayaan Hirsi Ali that she is safe and does not need protection.

First, there are all the holiday trappings of this by-now annual column — such seasonal staples as my all-time favorite “war on terror” quotation from Abu Qatada, the Al Qaeda-linked cleric. I just love to trot it out around Ramadan after President Bush has said something utterly ignorant about Islam meaning peace, or, addressing the Muslim pooh bahs he always has at the White House for a fast-breaking Iftar dinner, how the jihadists have “twisted” Islam.

Uniformed military personnel, civilians and family members faced Mecca and knelt on adorned prayer rugs chanting their prayers in quiet invocation to Allah.

“We do all we can to help meet the religious needs of our soldiers,” said Deputy Pentagon Chaplain Army Maj. Alan Pomaville, a Christian, who attended the iftar alongside the Muslim chaplains. “The leadership in the [Defense Department] wants to care for the body of the whole soldier.”

As the Pentagon celebrated Ramadan, the White House is in preparations for an iftar feast tomorrow, said Lt. Cmdr. Saifulislam, who will be participating at the White House events.

“President and Mrs. Bush host an iftar dinner every year because they want people around the world to know how much they respect Islam and the many Muslims living in the U.S. who are free to worship as they want, and are an integral part of our society,” said Gordon Johndroe, spokesman for the White House National Security Council.

The new issue of Reason contains a lengthy interview with Ayaan Hirsi Ali, the brave apostate Muslim who fled the Netherlands and now lives in the US. Alas, it’s not yet online, but it’s definitely in a Baweresque vein. She pulls absolutely no punches. Like Bawer, she too blames the West for its craven passivity in the face of a violent threat. And she won’t have any of the false equivalence among Abrahamic religions. Though she is now an atheist and wishes everyone would be, she said that if people have to accept God, she would rather that they become Jewish or Catholic because both religions have a much more humane concept of God than “the fire-breathing Allah who inspires jihadism and totalitarianism.”

When the interviewer asked her if she thought Islam could bring about positive social change in the same way that religious Protestants helped end US slavery, and Catholicism helped end communism in Poland, she responded sharply:

Hirsi Ali: Only if Islam is defeated.

Because right now, the political side of Islam, the power-hungry expansionist side of Islam, has become superior to the Sufis and the Ismailis and the peace-seeking Muslims.

Reason: Don’t you mean defeating radical Islam?

Hirsi Ali: No. Islam, period. Once it’s defeated, it can mutate into something peaceful.

It’s very difficult to even talk about peace now. They’re not interested in peace.

Reason: We have to crush the world’s 1.5 billion Muslims under our boot? In concrete terms, what does that mean, ‘defeat Islam’?

She doesn’t really answer, except to say that Islam must be resisted at every opportunity, “in all forms, and if you don’t do that, then you have to live with the consequence of being crushed.” She said that she believes we are headed to that point “because the West has been in denial for a long time.” We didn’t deal with the problem when it was easier, and now it’s much worse:

Hirsi Ali: …There is no moderate Islam. There are Muslims who are passive, who don’t all follow the rules of Islam, but there’s really only one Islam, defined as submission to the will of God. There’s nothing moderate about it.

Reason: So when even a hard-line critic of Islam such as Daniel Pipes says, “Radical Islam is the problem, but moderate Islam is the solution,” he’s wrong?

Hirsi Ali: He’s wrong. Sorry about that.

Of course it’s true, as I have noted many times: there are moderate Muslims, but there is no moderate Islam. Every school of jurisprudence and sect that Muslims consider orthodox teaches that it is part of the responsibility of Muslims to subjugate non-Muslims under the rule of Islamic law. Consequently, Daniel Pipes’s formulation is valid only when it is understood that the moderate Islam that is the solution has to be invented — it is not a traditional form of Islam. I have spoken at conferences where Dr. Pipes was also speaking on several occasions, and have heard his answers when asked about exactly this point — and he has said essentially the same thing. He has also written at his website: “Robert Spencer and I have discussed the perceived differences in our view of Islam. He and I concluded that, although we have different emphases – he deals more with scriptures, I more with history – we have no disagreements.”

Later in the interview, the Reason interviewer points out that she’s in favor of civil liberties, but would appear to deny them fully to Muslims in the West. She responds by saying that to save civil liberties, you have to restrict them on those who would take them away from everyone. She even goes so far as to say that all Muslims schools should be closed down in the US. She says that the Western constitutions that allow freedom of religion are products of the Enlightenment, and were written at a time when no one could have conceived of the jihadi threat. She says passing constitutional restrictions on Muslims is going to happen because the problem of Islamic extremism is not going to go away, and in fact is going to get worse — though sensibly, she acknowledges at length that there are some pretty strong reasons why America doesn’t have the same problem as Europe (e.g., Muslim immigrants to America want to assimilate, there’s not a welfare system for them to grow dependent on, white guilt is different in the US, etc.).
She concludes that the West’s arrogance is its own worst enemy “because in the West there’s this notion that we are invincible and that everyone will modernize anyway.” And, she says, this mistaken notion that if we “indulge and appease and condone,” everything will work out in the end.

“The problem is not going to go away. Confront it, or it’s only going to get bigger.”

Truer words were never spoken.

Why should anyone be “commended” for their religion? Is believing in this or that religion some special exploit, some feat of derring-do, that needs to be commended?

There are those who deserve commendation for ceasing to believe in Islam and bravely writing about it. In a better world, those whose duty it is to protect us, and instruct us, and therefore have a duty — a duty they must cease to ignore –to learn about Islam, and not from the army of hirelings of Muslim states, and apologists for Islam, who are running around all the capitals of the Western world. In a rightly-ordered world, the brave dissenters, those who in the case of Islam are the equivalent of Andrey Sakharov and Alexander Solzhenitsyn and Yuri Galanskov and Valery Chalidze and Anatoliy Yakobson and all the others, the best people in the Soviet Union, who helped bring that system down by irrefutably showing what was wrong, morally and in other ways, with the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, and helped to unnerve and demoralize, starting with the educated children of the Nomenklatura, the Party’s rulers, who could not gainsay their arguments.

No, don’t expect any resolutions “commending” those who signed that St. Petersburg (Florida) Declaraton, including Ibn Warraq and Wafa Sultan and Mithal al-Alusi, and many others.

But why was this resolution, seemingly innocuous, but in fact sinister in its goal — to implicate Congressmen in ways they do not yet realize, implicate them psychologically in the defense of Islam — ever brought to a vote?

One is beginning to feel about Congressmen the way Mark Twain felt about them, and Will Rogers. The contempt, if expressed as they did it, amuses, but it doesn’t make for a healthy polity, one able to defend itself against the greatest internal menace, one that is unprecedented in its means and its resources, that this country, and that the entire West along with it, has ever faced.
We all know what this resolution is all about, and what the Ramadan iftar dinners at the Pentagon and the White House are all about. All are designed to reassure Muslims that we know that Islam is a religion of peace, and that Islam has nothing to do with jihadist terrorism. In fact, this resolution, and those iftars, are caused by jihad terrorism; if Islamic terrorism weren’t an international phenomenon, and if the United States weren’t engaged in efforts, however ill-conceived and wrongheaded, to defend ourselves against that terrorism, there would be no need for such initiatives at all. The need for them arises out of a sense of guilt, tinged with fear: yes, we’ve got our troops in two Muslim countries, but we know you chaps aren’t all bad, eh wot, and you’ve got a grand religion there, and…please don’t hate us.

Instead of passing resolutions congratulations Muslims for Ramadan, and instead of holding iftar dinners in the Pentagon and the White House — or at very least in addition to doing so — the U.S. ought to be placing responsibility where it actually lies. Where are the Congressional resolutions calling upon Muslim groups in America to renounce Sharia and political Islam, and to institute comprehensive, transparent programs teaching against Islamic supremacism in U.S. mosques and Muslim schools? Where are the Congressional resolutions calling upon Muslims in the U.S. to condemn not just “terrorism,” but Al-Qaeda, Hamas, Hizballah, and other jihad terror groups, and to back up their condemnations with active cooperation with anti-terror efforts?

The Republicans who voted “present” on the Ramadan resolution don’t say any of this.

AUCKLAND: October 4, 2007. (ANS) The New Zealand Government is preparing to celebrate, as a State occasion next month, an important Muslim festival, for the third year in a row.

While there is no State celebration of any Christian festival, such as Easter or Christmas, the Ministry of Ethnic Affairs is hosting the festival Eid’ul Fitr, a celebration of the end of the month of Ramadan, the holiest month in the Islamic calendar.

Parliament also celebrates the Hindu Diwali and the Chinese New Year festivals.

Over 50 per cent of the population of New Zealand claimed some affiliation to Christianity in the most recent census, while other religious groups make up only…??

Independent MP Gordon Copeland said the Muslim festival was the only truly religious festival celebrated by the State.

“You can’t separate politicians from politics,” he said. “It is about gathering votes. But the State, which is secular, should not be paying for this religious festival in Parliament. It breaches the separation of Church and State principle.”

National MP Judith Collins said the Government was displaying a double standard.

“The Government promotes itself as secular when it wants to and has cut out grace at state dinners. That applied even when the Queen, who is head of the Anglican Church, was here.

Fear of fanatical Islamists prompted Ayaan Hirsi Ali to leave the Netherlands, her adopted home, and now she has been forced to return. Paying for her bodyguards in the United States is too expensive for the Dutch government — what a disgrace.

Amsterdam – There are exactly five people that the Dutch government has to protect against death threats from radical Islamists.
This sort of protection is expensive. Society bears the costs because freedom of opinion, a cornerstone of our culture, is on the line. The extremists, for their part, are prepared to risk their own lives to kill those under government protection.

The costs of protection are completely disproportionate to the outcome: the continued existence of our values and norms.

Ayaan Hirsi Ali is the sixth person granted protection by the Dutch government. She began receiving threats when, as a Dutch citizen and member of the parliament, she spoke out critically against political Islam. After the so-called “passport scandal,” when the Dutch minister of immigration and integration threatened to confiscate her passport after Ayaan had been accused of lying about her name and birth date when she first arrived in the Netherlands, she moved to the United States, which precipitated a sharp upswing in her career within only a few months. She wrote a bestseller and landed a job at the American Enterprise Institute. But as a Dutch citizen, Ayaan does not qualify for protection in the United States under US laws and regulations.

Contrary to what many in the Netherlands believe about the success of her autobiography, she is not wealthy. She could not pay for the kind of protection she needs out of her own pocket — no matter how much she would like to do so. Besides, the Dutch government apparently failed to find the right US officials with whom they could have reached an agreement. Under a decision by Justice Minister Ernst Hirsch Balin, the protection paid for by the Dutch government expired on Oct. 1. Ayaan returned to the Netherlands, because without protection she doesn’t have a day left to live.

How much is her life worth, according to Minister Balin’s budget?

When someone in the Justice Ministry leaked classified documents on Ayaan’s protection to the newspaper NRC Handelsblad, it set off a media circus. Neither Ayaan nor anyone directly associated with her was behind all the attention she is currently attracting. She would have preferred to go on living quietly in the Netherlands, and she would have liked to quietly work out a solution with Hirsch Balin.

How much is her life worth, according to Minister Balin’s budget? How does he calculate this? These are politically sensitive questions, questions that former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher never asked when it came to the life of Salman Rushdie, wherever he happened to be.

Dutch society has no choice in this case. Canceling Ayaan’s protection would be the equivalent of a death sentence. She can lead a relatively quiet life in the United States, but not in the Netherlands. And because she is so well known in the Netherlands and practically lives the life of a prisoner, not even able to go out on the street, the most humane solution is to continue to provide her with protection in America.

When commenting about the fact that the Netherlands paid for Ayaan’s protection in the United States, parliamentarian Sybrand van Haersma Buma of the Christian Democrats can’t help but admit that “it was a transitional solution, one that cannot last indefinitely.”

How many days will he give Ayaan? Another week to live? A month? And then it would be time for the butchers of fundamentalist Islam to move in?

Whether we think she is nice, kind or opportunist, we cannot afford anything happening to her. The Dutch government is making a problem out of something that shouldn’t be one, something that only causes chaos and sorrow.

Both Hirsi Ali and Hirsch Balin can only lose. The winners are the extremists who laugh about our inability to offer this courageous woman peace and safety.

You see, it’s too expensive. In fact, though, it makes you want to weep.

A Dubai-based company Conqueror Real Estate is standing by a decision to use Adolf Hitler in a national newspaper campaign in the United Arab Emirates.

The ad, which places a picture of the Nazi dictator next to the tagline “Conqueror – The world is yours”, ran in the national newspaper Gulf News and provoked a string of complaints.

But David Dakak, general manager of Conqueror Real Estate, said the ad had produced the desired effect and was part of the company’s marketing strategy to provoke a response.

Dakak said: “I’m making business, I don’t have any political opinion. He’s a famous person — bad or good, I don’t care — and I want to attract the attention of readers. And yesterday we had a lot of response. We had complaints, but it was one of the busiest days of the year too, so it has an affect.”

Context matters: the Treaty of al-Hudaibiyya

In Islam, no Infidel state, whatever its dimensions, can be permitted, for that would violate the essence of Islam. Islam, said Mohammad, is “to dominate and not to be dominated.” No land once part of dar al-Islam can ever fall under Infidel control again. The land on which Israel now sits, and other lands, including the Balkans, much of south-central Europe, much of Russia, most of India, and of course Spain, were once all part of dar al-Islam, and must be returned to it. But Israel, an Infidel sovereign state run by the despised Jews, and sitting smack in the middle of dar al-Islam, is particularly disturbing.

If the Islamic basis for Arab opposition to Israel were understood, then much that confuses commentators would become clear. It is irrelevant what Israel’s borders are; if it exists, it remains an affront, an outrage, a catastrophe, the greatest injustice in the history of the world (as Arab spokesmen routinely say).

The very phrase a “final peace settlement” rings hollow to anyone familiar with the tenets of Islam. For there can never be a “final peace settlement” between Moslems and non-Moslems. The model for treaties is the agreement made between Muhammad and the Meccans in 628 A.D., the Treaty of al-Hudaibiyya. It was supposed to be a “truce” treaty that would last 10 years. It lasted scarcely 18 months, when Muhammad, feeling that his forces had grown sufficiently, breached the agreement on a pretext, and attacked the Meccans. As Majid Khaddui notes in War and Peace in Islam, this Treaty of al-Hudaibiyya became the model, and the basis, for all future “treaties” with Infidel peoples and polities.

The Esam Omeish affair is the latest example of a “moderate,” “peaceful” American Muslim leader done in by his own words, caught on tape.

Omeish, the president of the Muslim American Society (MAS), was forced to resign last week from his recently-appointed position on Virginia Governor Tim Kaine’s immigration commission when videos featuring Omeish posted by Little Green Footballs and the Investigative Project on Terrorism (IPT) were brought to the governor’s attention.

Kaine asked for Omeish’s resignation after observing one video featuring Omeish at a December 2000 rally praising Palestinians for “…you have learned the way, that you have known that the jihad way is the way to liberate your land.”

Instead of owning up to his words, Omeish told reporters at a press conference Friday that he was taken out of context as part of a “smear campaign” based on“Islamophobia.”

When speaking of jihad, he said he did not mean violence. He only meant “exerting full effort.” He, like the Muslim American Society, is completely peaceful, espousing only a “path of moderation, engagement and outreach.” Omeish is a surgeon, and before that, an honor student – a pillar of the community, and nothing more. The re-production of his own words is an “Islamophobic” “smear.”

MAS Freedom Foundation Executive Director, Mahdi Bray, went one step further, portraying Omeish as the victim of a not-so-vast right wing conspiracy by those who “send people into our mosques and send people into our conventions dressed as Muslim women with hidden cameras.”
