The starting point for this article stems from a random conversation I had with a fellow dad at a kids’ sporting event a couple of weekends ago. This is a guy I’ve known for a while, typical Aussie bloke, with whom the normal “dads at kids sports events” conversations are easy-going and natural. At a certain point in the morning, quite unsolicited, he turned to me and observed that “you know, people say socialism is bad, but countries like Norway are the best in the world, great places to live, socialism can’t be all bad”. It was an odd point to make, coming as it did out of the blue, and I was initially taken aback. Was this the time for a deep dive into my thoughts on the perils of socialism and its insidious creep into our liberal democracies?

I smiled politely, but gave my opinion that countries such as Norway which have for decades adopted Democratic socialism, have succeeded not because of the political system, but despite it; their success hinges on their cultural homogeneity and sense of individual responsibility, and their socialist “utopia” depends on extremely high tax rates, while the “free everything” that the citizens are gifted stems from the fact that the numbers of skilled workers and the educated middle-class way exceed those fully-dependent on the state. I left him with a recommendation to read Solzhenitsyn’s Gulag Archipelago, and come back to me with his thoughts on whether he thought a more typical Marxist-socialist system, a la Venezuela, would be more his cup of tea. Tellingly, he had never heard of Solzhenitsyn, nor had he heard of the word gulag or its meaning, nor anything about the massive genocides that befell both Soviet Russia and Mao’s China in the twentieth century. I’m not suggesting that I’m a hero for knowing some of the more intimate details (having only read Gulag recently), but I do have a basic grasp of 20th century history to draw upon.

Former Minister lets the cat out of the bag: Italy Must Be Guided in Its ‘Change of Population’ Due to Immigration

Prior to Italian national elections, the country’s first black cabinet minister told Swiss radio that due to massive immigration, Italy needs to be guided in “the change in the composition of the population” that is the fruit of immigration.

An immigrant herself from the African nation of Congo and Italy’s former minister for integration, Cécile Kyenge said the present situation in Italy is “surreal” because of the level of hostility toward immigration found among several political parties.

Immigration has become “the sole rallying point” of right-wing Italian parties, she said, which stoke a “climate of fear” by focusing on the lack of stability and security in the country.

So during the electoral campaign, she said, few speak about their political programs but “rather of the malaise of the population or rather of the people’s fear and that’s not Italy.”

Kyenge told Swiss radio that countries like Italy, Spain, and Greece have found themselves facing a migrant crisis by themselves, when they should receive greater support from the European Union (EU).

Journalist Called ‘Whore’, Told Not to Film in Stockholm No-Go Zone

Swedish broadcast journalist Anna-Klara Bankel was called a “damn whore” and told not to film in the notorious Stockholm no-go suburb of Rinkeby by locals whilst recording video footage for a documentary.

Anna-Klara Bankel, who works for the Swedish public broadcaster SVT, was called a “damn whore” while attempting to interview locals on the effectiveness of recently introduced CCTV cameras in the area to combat drug dealing and other crimes.

While trying to talk to locals in the main square of Rinkeby, a man shouted: “Go away! You cannot film here. Damn it!”

• This willingness to indulge even the most anti-liberal beliefs and behaviour finds many of its roots in the general disdain many left-wingers and liberals seem to feel for Western democracy, human rights and individualism. But that does not explain why so many people, often decent people, are drawn to defend Islam, Islamic patriarchy, Islamic discrimination against women, violence and more, even when such defence is obviously anti-liberal in the extreme.
• I have never known a liberal to say a bad word about a more prevalent and arguably more damaging imperialism: Islamic imperialism. There have been many more imperialist Muslim empires than European ones.
• One might have thought that historical facts such as these would provoke human-rights activists to put the Muslim empires into the same category as the later European ones. Not a word of it. Nor do liberals mention another issue that should be close to their hearts: the Islamic slave trade.

Feminists are far from the only so-called left-wing or liberal group to betray their own basic principles out of a bizarre admiration for Islam, whether its history, its values, or its self-proclaimed victimization. Real liberals believe in human rights, women’s rights, racial equality, free speech, and more, rejecting extremism on both the right and left. However, the left in the UK and elsewhere seems to have abandoned those principles and betrayed the very people they had previously supported.[1]

He was seized in a raid in ­Helmand province, now a Taliban stronghold. Photographs showed a man in his forties, with a reddish beard, wearing traditional ­Afghan dress under a khaki ­military jacket and topped with a black turban.

He gave his name as Abdul Wadood and is believed to be a military adviser to Mullah Nasir, the local commander of the Red Unit. The elite force is handpicked from the insurgents’ best fighters, trained to carry out commando-style raids and granted the best Western equipment looted from Afghan forces.

Omar Zwak, a spokesman for the governor’s office, said the German had been taken to Kandahar for “further investigation”.

Foreigners from Pakistan, Arab states and central Asia are common among the Pashtun tribesmen of the Taliban but it is rare for citizens of Western ­nations to be accepted by the ­Islamists, still less so for them to rise so high within the group. One, John Walker Lindh, known as the “American Taliban”, was captured in Afghanistan and ­jailed for 20 years in 2002.

Rumours have persisted for months of Islamic State fighters from the Middle East drifting into Afghanistan to join the local franchise of ISIS. However, ­observers are sceptical European Islamists would see the country as fertile new ground, especially with the US subjecting the ISIS stronghold of Nangarhar province to heavy bombing.

Taliban Red Units have emerged in several parts of the country in recent months. Equipped with night-vision goggles and laser-targeting weapons, they have launched a series of raids on local troops, killing dozens.

President Ashraf Ghani unveiled a framework for peace with the Taliban this week, ­including recognising the insurgents as a political party if they join negotiations.

African teenagers spit on and wrestle with police in Melbourne’s west

Police officers were spat at and three African teenagers arrested in violent confrontations outside a Melbourne shopping centre on Wednesday afternoon, as mounting community tensions boiled over in the city’s west.

In the latest flare up involving African teens, up to 20 officers rushed to Tarneit Central after a dispute began near a mobile police van about 3pm.

The van had been placed at the shopping centre as part of a high visibility operation in the suburb where police have been trying to calm community fears about African youths.

Never mind China and Iran. The greatest threat to free speech on the Internet may be the European Union:

Google, YouTube, Facebook, Twitter and other internet companies must show the European Union within three months that they are removing extremist content more rapidly or face legislation forcing them to do so.

“Extremist content” means content that the left-liberal bureauweenies who run the European Union don’t like. That could include Islamic State recruiting videos, but it could also include common sense commentary from people like Pat Condell.

“While several platforms have been removing more illegal content than ever before … we still need to react faster against terrorist propaganda and other illegal content which is a serious threat to our citizens’ security, safety and fundamental rights,” Digital Commissioner Andrus Ansip said in Thursday’s statement.

Given the Orwellian nature of the EU, demands to censor content so as to secure “fundamental rights” are ominous.

Euroweenies want “hate speech” removed within 1 hour of notification. That doesn’t leave much time to distinguish content that poses an actual physical threat (e.g., ISIS bomb-making tutorials) from opinions that some bureaucrat doesn’t find sufficiently left-wing.
