Plans to ease headscarf ban in Turkey

Turkey’s ruling AK Party, which has Islamist roots, signalled plans to ease a ban on the wearing of the Islamic headscarf in universities under a new draft constitution.

“This (new) constitution will solve the headscarf problem in a more libertarian spirit,” Dengir Firat, a deputy chairman of the AK Party, told CNN Turk television.
No compulsion in religion. But again, what about in lack of religion?

The AK Party is due to publish its draft constitution on December 15.

It has said the draft, due to replace a text dating back to a time of military rule in the 1980s, will boost individual freedoms in Turkey, a European Union candidate.
Firat said the government wanted a wider debate about the principles and aims of the new constitution, adding that opponents were trying to whip up secularist fears artificially by concentrating solely on the headscarf issue.

“The headscarf is an extension of freedom of belief,” he said.

ANKARA, Turkey — Turkey has launched an investigation into alleged collusion between police officers and at least one of the suspects charged with killing three Christians earlier this year at a publishing house that produces Bibles, an official said Saturday.
Two senior police inspectors will be assigned to investigate whether any officers provided assistance to the suspects, an Interior Ministry official said on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media. He did not provide further details.

The three Christians — a German and two Turks — were killed in the southern city of Malatya on April 18. The killings — in which the victims were tied up and had their throats slit — drew international condemnation and added to Western concerns about whether Turkey can protect its religious minorities.

Five people were arrested and charged with murder. The trial opened last month, but was quickly adjourned until Jan. 14 because defense attorneys requested more time to prepare their arguments.

On her first day at Basra University this year a man came up to Zeena, a 21-year-old Christian woman, and three other Christian girls and ordered them to cover their heads with a hijab, or Islamic headscarf.

“We didn’t listen to him, and thought he might just be some extremist student representing only himself,” she said. The next day Zeena and two of her friends returned to class with uncovered heads.

This time a man in the black clothes of the Shia militia stopped them at the entrance and took them aside. “He said, ‘We asked you yesterday to wear a hijab, so why are you and your friends not covering your hair?’. He was talking very aggressively and I was scared,” Zeena recalled.

The girls explained that they were Christians and that their faith did not call for headscarves. “He said: ‘Outside this university you are Christian and can do what you want; inside you are not. Next time I want to see you wearing a hijab or I swear to God the three of you will be killed immediately’,” Zeena recalled. Terrified, the girls ran home. They now wear the headscarf all the time.

Ali, having obviously since withdrawn from parliament, now resides in Washington, where she has been all but abandoned. In spite of this, she continues to be perhaps the strongest, most eloquent and certainly the most determined advocate of free speech and women’s rights in the Islamic world that still draws breath.

Though her bravery may be limitless, her security detail is definitely not. Ali must now pay for her security measures by herself. If she cannot afford to defend herself against those Muslim fanatics destined to bring her to justice for her apostasy, she is essentially consigned to the fate of Theo van Gogh. It is because of this that I ask you, the reader, to stand up to this savage bullying and defend free speech by donating whatever you can afford to her security trust.

Here we have a person who has been through more than any of us will in an entire lifetime. She has had to fight tooth and nail for the very freedoms we just assume upon birth. JAKARTA, December 3 (Compass Direct News) – Attacking the house of a Baptist pastor and protesting the presence of a Catholic temple, radical Muslim groups got authorities to close down two churches in the past two weeks.

In Banten province, extremists from the Islamic Defender Forces (Front Pembela Islam, or FPI) on November 21 attacked the Tangerang home of the Rev. Bedali Hulu, pastor at Jakarta Christian Baptist Church (GKBJ), kicking out doors and windows, breaking glass and throwing the pastor’s belongings from the house. The church had been meeting in the pastor’s home.

At the time of the attack, only the pastor’s mother-in-law and a member of the church, Temaziduhu Laoli, were in the house, located at Perumahan Permata Sepatan, Desa Pisangan Jaya in Tangerang. Habib Muhammad Assegaf led the attack.

As a result of the attack and objections to the church, Rev. Hulu met with Pisangan Jaya village leaders on November 22 – with the result that officials asked him to leave the territory until tensions cooled. Activities at the church, which has a permit and is registered with Religious Affairs authorities, came to a halt.

“It’s okay for a while, but I’ll be back,” said Rev. Hulu. His wife and his mother-in-law were allowed to remain in their house.

Twenty Islamic organizations joined together in the Hague on Tuesday to demand respect for Islam, after the municipal museum intended to show an exhibition by Iranian Sooreh Hera showing homosexuals with masks of the prophet Mohammed.

According to the Muslim committee “Respect for you and me”, the museum was right in withdrawing the exhibition because the pictures were offending and polarizing. MuseumGoudA, the municipal museum of Gouda, has meanwhile announced it will exhibit the pictures. According to director Ranti Tjan, “Art cannot be rejected for political reasons”.

The committee will check if the statement by PVV leader Geert Wilders about Islam can be legally challenged. “Respect for you and me” also intends to fight against insulting statements for Muslims by other people.

A 23-year-old former Heathrow airport worker who stored military manuals and wrote poems celebrating the beheading of non-believers avoided prison yesterday.
Samina Malik, who called herself the “lyrical terrorist”, was the first woman convicted under section 58 of the Terrorism Act 2000 of possessing records likely to be useful in terrorism.

At the Old Bailey yesterday, Judge Peter Beaumont, the recorder of London, sentenced her to nine months’ prison, suspended for 18 months, and ordered her to carry out 100 hours of unpaid work.

“In my judgment your offence is on the margin of what this crime concerns,” he told Malik. He said she was of previously good character and from a “supportive and law-abiding family who are appalled by the trouble that you are in”.

* “Law abiding” Muslims abide by the laws of the sharia, of course.

While a custodial sentence was merited, she had already faced extremely rigorous bail conditions that were “tantamount to house arrest” and had spent five months in custody.

Attention during her trial focused on her poetry. One poem, How to Behead, asserted: “It’s not as messy or as hard as some may think/ It’s all about the flow of the wrist ... You’ll feel the knife hit the wind and food pipe/ But Don’t Stop/ Continue with all your might.”

Malik, who lived in Southall, west London, and worked airside at WH Smith at Heathrow, was also found to have written on the back of a till receipt: “The desire within me increases every day to go for martyrdom.”

Jonathan Sharp, prosecuting, told the jury that Malik visited a website linked to the jailed cleric Abu Hamza and stored material about weapons.

Malik insisted she had adopted her “lyrical terrorist” nickname because she thought it was “cool”, adding: “I am not a terrorist.” Outside court her solicitor, Iqbal Ahmed, read a statement on her behalf. “The jury found that she did not have the material for terrorist purposes which was an important part of her case,” he said. “She now wants to get on with her life.”

Inayat Bunglawala, of the Muslim Council of Britain, welcomed the decision to suspend the sentence. “Samina Malik was being prosecuted in effect for a thought crime because she had downloaded some material from the internet which anyone could download.”

The Crown Prosecution Service said: “Samina Malik was not prosecuted for writing poetry. Ms Malik was convicted of collecting information, without reasonable excuse, of a kind likely to be useful to a person committing or preparing an act of terrorism.”

German Muslim Group Slam Merkel Over Mosque Remark `We must be on guard against sparking artificial discussions for political purposes which have little connection with reality,` Alboga said.

A German Muslim group criticised Chancellor Angela Merkel on Thursday for suggesting that mosque minarets should not be higher than church steeples, saying it hoped this topic would not be used as a campaign issue.
Merkel, a Lutheran pastor’s daughter who grew up in communist East Germany, told a congress of her conservative Christian Democrats that “we must take care that mosque cupolas are not built demonstratively higher than church steeples”.

Mosque-building is a sensitive subject in Germany. Merkel’s fellow conservatives in Bavaria have been saying for months that minarets should not dwarf steeples. Local residents are up in arms about plans to build mosques in Berlin, Munich and Cologne.

Bekir Alboga, spokesman for the Coordination Council of Muslims, an umbrella organisation for Muslims in Germany, said he was worried that mosques could become a campaign issue in state elections coming up in some parts of Germany.

“We must be on guard against sparking artificial discussions for political purposes which have little connection with reality,” Alboga said in a statement.

“Comments like Chancellor Merkel’s (about Mosques) … take a back seat to the expert opinions of building authorities, who base their decisions on local conditions and consensus between the citizens and mosque communities,” he said.

Merkel has organised several conferences to try to improve relations between Germany’s largely Christian population and its roughly 3.2 million Muslims. One of the subjects under discussion is mosque building.

Christians in Cologne do not want the city’s skyline — now dominated by one of the world’s largest cathedrals — to be altered by two tall minarets.

Alboga said Muslims and Christians have more important issues to deal with than arguing about the height of minarets and steeples.

“Parts of the world are on fire,” he said. “Instead of putting those out we’re fighting over secondary issues.”

Saudi Arabia:

Women are forbidden to drive, to show their head and to speak in public, and to shake a man’s hand. On television, preachers incite husbands to beat their wives “for their own good”. Saudi journalists describe the countless prohibitions facing Muslim women in their country and appeal for a distinction between religious truths and social customs.

Riyadh (AsiaNews/Agencies) – Without permission, women cannot even drive a car or change the colour of their clothes, and television preachers warn that women who shake a man’s hand are committing “adultery of the hand”. Citing such examples, Saudi journalists have criticized the social mentality that rules the relationship between wife and husband.

In the Saudi daily Al-Watan, Fatima Al-Faqih described the many bans imposed on Saudi women: “[They] are forbidden to drive, forbidden to travel without permission [of their husband or father or whoever has authority over them] , forbidden to stay alone at a hotel without permission, forbidden to name their own children without [a man’s] consent… forbidden to leave their homes or to take a job without permission… forbidden to change the color of their abayas [traditional, long tunic], forbidden to go to school or to the university without permission.”

In some Saudi cities, a woman cannot even “show her face”, she cannot get married without permission nor can she “remain married if one of her male relatives decides that her husband’s lineage is inferior to hers… nor can she sue for divorce without apologizing and paying a fine.” Without permission, she “cannot keep her children after the divorce… hold a senior position in the private or public sectors… annoy her husband, and finally, a woman’s voice is considered [a form of] defilement, and she is forbidden to speak in public.”

Many men, writes Hasna Al-Quna’ir on the Al-Riyadh daily, justify the inferiority of women by resorting to a “distorted reading of the sayings of the Prophet”, a tactic often used by television preachers. For example, there is a verse that says: “A tribe that nominates a woman [as leader] will not succeed”. The journalist explained that on the strength of this saying, an expert said on television that wives should not be asked for their views as they were completely emotional. Another television expert, to “defend the virtue of women”, “incites fathers, brothers and husbands”, telling them that “a girl who is not beaten from an early age grows up to be a rebellious woman, difficult to control” and that “a woman who leaves her home without a veil is like a woman who goes out naked”. The same preacher warned Muslim women that not covering their heads was “the main reason that women are seduced and fall [into sin].” Another preacher said the woman “who shakes the hand of a man that is not her husband is guilty of… ‘adultery of the hand’”. The journalist said that the sayings of the Prophet needed to be considered in the “historical circumstances and particular context” in which they were pronounced and that “religious duties” had to be distinguished from norms of social conduct that were controversial and not subject to dogmas of faith, “like the custom of covering the face”.

Due to this culture, writes Maha Al-Hujailan on the Al-Watan, “women live in constant fear… that the husband may take another wife.” “Only women living in this fear properly fulfill the role of the wife, while a woman who feels assured that her husband will not take another wife comes to disdain her husband and her family life…This culture causes a women to feel mentally and psychologically inferior, like a quarrelsome child who must be constantly supervised, intimidated and punished into performing her duties.”

The journalist said that women who felt this way may even believe that “a good man who respects them is nothing but a weak and unstable man… In their opinion, an ideal man is a violent one who humiliates his wife.”

Muslim Woman Sues San Bernardino County Over Religious Freedom in Jail

LOS ANGELES— A 29-year-old Muslim woman who was forced by deputies to remove her religious head covering while she was in custody in San Bernardino County’s West Valley Detention Center, filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court Wednesday asserting that her religious freedom rights were violated under the First Amendment by San Bernardino county sheriff’s deputies.

Jameelah Medina, of Rialto, was arrested at the Pomona station of Metrolink’s commuter rail system on Dec. 7, 2005, for having an invalid train pass. She was taken to the West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga for processing.

Medina, who was born in the United States and raised in a Muslim family, wears a headscarf known as a hijab to cover her hair, ears, neck and part of her chest. Many Muslim women, like Medina, believe that they should be covered at all times in the presence of men who are not members of their immediate family.

Despite her repeated requests to keep her head covered during her day-long incarceration, she was forced to remove her hijab in the presence of men she did not know and to remain uncovered for much of the day.

“I tried to tell the officer not to make me remove it because it is part of my religion,” said Medina. “Even after the officer had searched me and found nothing, she would not give me back my scarf. I felt humiliated, exposed.”

Medina was never prosecuted in connection with this arrest.

The lawsuit is being filed by the American Civil Liberties Union and the ACLU of Southern California.

“These are photos of the Order of Malta embassy in Cairo. I ask Allah to have it closed down or blown up, along with those inside it, who hate Islam and Muslims,” the Internet message continued.

The message urging the jihadi attack on the Order of Malta – nowadays a charitable organisation – follows the publication of an editorial in the United Arab Emirates daily al-Bayan, by Jordanian MP Jamal Muhammad Abidat entitled ‘The Knights of Malta – more than a conspiracy’.

While the sentences of 14-19 years may seem light considering the horrific crime, the minister at large for Open Doors USA, a Christian ministry that has worked in the area of Indonesia where the attack happened, said it not only is a relatively severe penalty, it also is raising fears of violence as the Christmas season approaches.

Paul Estabrooks, of Open Doors USA told WND the sentences may appear light from a Western perspective. But he said in a culture dominated by Islam, it is a serious statement, and also will bring “some closure” for Christians in the region.

“The interesting thing is the timing,” he said. “The last few Christmases have been pretty violent (in the region). … There is some concern this would inflame the sectarian violence of the area again.”

Muslims ‘criminalised for silly thoughts’*

Young Muslims are being convicted of thought crimes and branded as terrorists for life, the country’s most prominent Islamic leader has told The Times. Muhammad Abdul Bari said police and prosecutors were criminalising youths for harbouring “silly thoughts” and were undermining Gordon Brown’s £400 million drive to win Muslim hearts and minds. Dr Bari, Secretary-General of the Muslim Council of Britain, was commenting ahead of the sentencing today of Samina Malik, a shop assistant who styled herself as “the lyrical terrorist”, wrote poetry in praise of beheadings and joined extremist internet forums.

Dr Bari told The Times: “Many young people download objectionable material from the internet, but it seems that if you are a Muslim then this could lead to terrorist charges, even if you have absolutely no intention to do harm to anyone else. Samina’s so-called poetry was certainly very offensive but I don’t believe that this case should really have been a criminal matter. Young people may well have some silly thoughts. That should not be criminalised. It is their actions that we should be concerned about.” He said that if police were concerned about Malik they should have placed her under surveillance and detained her if she was involved in “actual terror-related activity”.

Dr Bari added: “Instead, she was prosecuted for what can only be termed really as a thought crime. This should not be of concern just to Muslims, but to all in our society who care about natural justice. Her conviction raises a lot of deeply worrying questions about Section 58 of the Terrorism Act and just how incredibly broad its scope is.”

Dr Bari said that Malik’s conviction and other cases could prove counter-productive. He added: “It is certainly sensible for the Government to work with Muslim groups to counter extremist propaganda. This is, we have been told often, part of a ‘hearts and minds’ campaign directed at young British Muslims, but it is difficult to see how Samina’s conviction can do anything other than impair this effort.”

Yes, the BBC can still cause our jaws to drop; the Times reports that the Beeb paid for a paintballing excursion as part of a program to make Muslims look cuddly and friendly called “Don’t Panic, I’m Islamic.”

Small problem. Three of the friendly Muslims who went on this trip turned out to be terrorists, involved in the failed bombings of July 21, 2005. Oops.

And when the BBC learned about this connection, they did not report it to the police: BBC ‘took terrorist trainers paintballing’.

The BBC funded a paintballing trip for men later accused of Islamic terrorism and failed to pass on information about the 21/7 bombers to police, a court was told yesterday.

Mohammed Hamid, who is charged with overseeing a two-year radicalisation programme to prepare London-based Muslim youths for jihad, was described as a “cockney comic” by a BBC producer.

The BBC paid for Mr Hamid and fellow defendants Muhammad al-Figari and Mousa Brown to go on a paintballing trip at the Delta Force centre in Tonbridge, Kent, in February 2005. The men, accused of terrorism training, were filmed for a BBC programme called Don’t Panic, I’m Islamic, screened in June 2005. The BBC paid Mr Hamid, an Islamic preacher who denies recruiting and grooming the men behind the failed July 2005 attack, a £300 fee to take part in the programme, Woolwich Crown Court was told.

Fitzgerald: Clean out the BBC 

The BBC needs to be cleaned out, top to bottom, and this requires a Parliamentary investigation. It needs to have John Simpson (see here for more) discharged as head of the World Service. It needs to be asked why it is refusing to reveal the contents of an investigation into bias in its coverage of the “Middle East conflict” (which means the Lesser Jihad against Israel).

In a few — just a few — cases, the outcry was too strong, and the outrageousness of the coverage too egregious, to be ignored, so a few transfers were made. For example, there was Orla Guerin, married to a “Palestinian” and a determined propagandist herself for The Cause. The steady drip-drip-drip in her outrageous coverage did so much to poison the minds of so many listeners, steadily over so many years, about Israel. She’s now been sent to South Africa, where she will continue to do what she can — for example, she’ll never cover the growing Muslim threat in Capetown, because for her, with her view, there is no Muslim threat.

There is Barbara Plett, who on air wept after Arafat — that great man — died, and who, only because of that on-air sobbing, revealing her bias, had to be transferred. In other words, her years of viciously one-sided reporting from Israel (along with Orla Guerin) could have continued forever, had she not wept for Arafat those real, not crocodile, tears. She’s now in Afghanistan — or is it Pakistan?

And then there is Lys Doucet, of the unusually hard and nasty voice, who was a cross between Guerin and Plett. Quite a trio. She’s been transferred, for her outrages, to Pakistan — or is it Afghanistan?

The BBC is the source from which many obtain their news and therefore their worldview. Like the U.N., it has been infiltrated and captured by Muslims ably abetted by non-Muslims who are — not all, but many — subject to those two mental pathologies that has done such damage in Western Europe, anti-Americanism and antisemitism. There have been recently cases of people quitting the BBC, people who did not share either the anti-Americanism or the antisemitism, and who are disgusted by what may be called the “culture” (as that word is now used) of the BBC. They too should testify. The few decent papers should make a stink, raise holy hell. And in this country, people should raise holy hell about the BBC being transmitted by NPR — and supported, therefore, by American taxpayers, either as donors, or as those who subsidize NPR because it has charitable status.

Let me make something clear for you:

We do not have “radical” and “moderate” in Islam. Muslims are Muslims. Muslims are not divided to two kinds of “radical” and “Moderate”. These names and divisions are made by man, not by God or religion. Radical Muslim and moderate Muslim do not exist. Muslims are Muslims even if they have different interpretation of the religious texts. In Islam there is another division. 1. The Muslims who follow the Quran and practice the religion. 2. The Muslims that believe in God and the messenger of God, Prophet Mohammad (peace be upon him), but they do not follow the Quran and do not practise the religion. They just carry the name of Islam. So this division is not only in Islam, we can see it in all other religions. There are practising Christians and non practising Christians. They are not called radical Christians or moderate Christians.

Radical Muslims do not exist. Moderate Muslims do not exist. Extremist Muslims do not exist. According the order of Allah in the Quran we are not allowed to call any name on our religion but Islam, and any name on ourselves but Muslim (I refer you to Chapter 30, Verse 32 of the holy Quran). If a Muslim doesn’t follow the Quran, do not call him/her moderate, but call him a Muslim who is not following the rules of his/her religion. Islam is not divided to two types of hard and soft, radical and moderate. Also the Quran is one unique holy book. There are not few versions of the Quran. I understand that there is variety of different interpretations of verses which are not clear enough and need to be explained by an expert, but that is completely different subject and will not result in division of radical and moderate, and secondly those verses are the minority. The majority of the verses are very clear and without any interpretation and explanation they give one particular guideline to the Muslims and no need that any cleric explain about them. The guidelines of the Quran are very clear. Unfortunately those who follow the Quran and practise their religion are called radical Muslims or extremist or Islamist or fundamentalist. A British imam’s daughter is living in fear of her life under police protection after she received death threats from her family for converting to Christianity.

The young woman, aged 32, whose father is a Muslim imam in the north of England, has moved house 45 times to escape detection by her family since she became a Christian 15 years ago.

Hannah, who uses a pseudonym to hide her identity, told The Times how she became a Christian after she ran away from home at 16 to escape an arranged marriage.

The threats against her became more serious a month ago, prompting police to offer her protection in case of an attempt on her life.

She was speaking on the eve of the launch of a new charity in London today to promote greater religious awareness. Muslims in Britain who wish to convert to Christianity are living in fear of their lives because of Islamic apostasy laws, a senior Church of England bishop will warn at the invitaton-only launch in west London.

The Bishop of Rochester, Dr Michael Nazir-Ali, will claim “freedom to believe” is under threat in Britain because of Islamic hostility to conversion.

Hannah, now employed in multi-faith youth work and who gives talks to churches on Islam, is the daughter of a Lancashire imam whose seven other children are demanding she return to Islam. She has been in hiding,

since her home was attacked by a group of men armed with knives, axes and hammers, in 1994. She will describe today how she is in fear of her life after the death threats against her were recently renewed.

She said: “I left home and I had nowhere to go. My religious education teacher gave me somewhere to live. Even though she tried to make me stay at home on Sundays, I am quite rebellious by nature and I started to go to church with her out of curiosity.”

She said she had been in hiding, on and off, ever since, and has now been given a telephone number she can call for an instant response by police should she need help. The latest threat was a text message from one of her brothers, warning he could not be responsible for his actions if she did not return to Islam.

Hannah said she was looking forward to getting married so she could change her name and escape detection by her family. Not all Muslims in Britain are this extreme, she believes.

“It is representative of some Muslims. I know the Koran says that anyone who goes away from Islam should be killed as an apostate so in some ways my family are following the Koran. They are following Islam to the word. But I do not think every Muslim would actually act on that.”

Earlier this year, a Policy Exchange study found that 36 per cent of British Muslims aged between 16 and 24 believed those who converted to another religion should be punished by death.

Dr Nazir-Ali will speak out on behalf of Hannah and others suffering persecution for their beliefs in the UK at today’s launch of Lapido Media, a new charity which is seeking to promote “religious literacy” in world affairs.

The Bishop is expected to describe how sharia law in many countries, including parts of Britain, punishes apostasy with death and is viewed as treason by theocratic governments. Dr Nazir-Ali will call on society to offer greater protection, by increasing understanding of what makes people vulnerable.

Pakistan-born Dr Nazir-Ali, who has a Christian and Muslim background, is patron of Lapido Media, funded by donations and trusts including the Jerusalem Trust. The word ‘lapido’ means ‘to speak up for’ in the Acholi language of Northern Uganda. The charity has been named in honour of the courage of Acholi church leaders who campaigned for an end to a little-reported 20-year war there, involving the abduction of 25,000 children

The US Secretary of State, she says, expressed her admiration for everything Hirsi Ali “has done for women and freedom.” Rice even helped her obtain a green card, she says proudly. It is quite possible that money to pay for her bodyguards over the past few weeks has been paid by associates of the Bush administration.

Former Dutch politician Ayaan Hirsi Ali is worshipped by foreign intellectuals, but not always welcome at home. Her opinions provoke Muslims as well as the European left, and she’s been living in very public exile from the Netherlands for over a year.

Even her clothing is provocative, though not at first glance. Ayaan Hirsi Ali wears a soft brown designer jacket with an embroidered floral pattern. When she takes off the jacket, though, there’s a black T-shirt. A black T-shirt underneath reads, in several languages (including Arabic): “Neither Whore Nor Submissive.”
She smoothes the T-shirt, stretches and says: “It’s a fantastic slogan, isn’t it?”

Who can be surprised that this woman polarizes people? That some consider her a kind of Joan of Arc, while others see her as an incorrigible radical? As someone who says that she wants to help oppressed Muslim women, and yet may do more them more damage than good? The daughter of a Somali opposition politician who fled to the Netherlands to escape an arranged marriage, Hirsi Ali is an expert at offending others. A rebellious spirit lurks beneath her graceful exterior and designer clothing.

Since the murder of Theo van Gogh, with whom she produced a film critical of male dominance in Muslim families three years ago, the 38-year-old Hirsi Ali has been traveling the world without a place to call home. She now lives in the United States, but recently came to Europe to promote her autobiography, which has just come out in paperback in Germany.

One of the reasons Hirsi Ali travels so much is a dispute over her personal protection that has been raging for weeks. After calling the Prophet Muhammad a pedophile and a tyrant, Hirsi Ali has become the target of Muslim fanatics.
And the threats are serious. Mohammed Bouyeri, a Dutch citizen of Moroccan descent, shot van Gogh as he was riding a bike down an Amsterdam street in November 2004. In a note he pinned to his victim’s chest with a knife, Bouyeri also threatened to kill Hirsi Ali. By then she already had bodyguards, paid for by the Dutch government. After Van Gogh’s murder the protection was heightened, and three years later Dutch intelligence still considers the risk to her life to be very high.

But she moved to the United States in September 2006, and after a year abroad, was told by the Netherlands that government money for her protection would be canceled — she would have to pay for it herself. The bodyguards who protected Hirsi Ali’s life 24 hours a day, seven days a week, had already cost The Hague €2 million ($2.93 million).
