Statement by Terry Davis, Secretary General of the Council of Europe, on the march “Against the Islamisation of Europe” today in Brussels

European values are under threat, say the organisers of a protest march under the banner “Against the Islamisation of Europe” which was due to place today in Brussels in spite of the ban by the city Mayor. The fact is that Europe and its values are indeed under threat, but the danger is not coming from Islam. Our common European values are undermined by bigots and radicals, both islamists and islamophobes, who exploit fears and prejudice for their own political objectives.

The self-proclaimed defenders of European values say that the Mayor has violated their rights under the European Convention on Human Rights. The freedom of assembly and the freedom of expression are indeed essential preconditions for democracy, but they should not be regarded as a licence to offend. I will not enter into the discussion about whether the march should have been allowed or not, but I note that the protesters’ reading of the Convention is selective to say the least. It is very important to remember that the freedom of assembly and expression can be restricted to protect the rights and freedoms of others, including the freedom of thought, conscience and religion. This applies to everyone in Europe including the millions of Europeans of Islamic faith, who were the main target of today’s shameful display of bigotry and intolerance.

Moral equivalence of the first water. “Islamophobes” are not flying planes into buildings. They are not predicting their conquest of Europe. They are not physically attacking people who do not conform to their code of conduct.

“Islamophobia”? Stop blowing things up in the name of Islam, and it will disappear. That Terry Davis would ignore all this and equate these two is unconscionable.

Bin Laden wants ‘caravan’ of ‘martyrs’

CAIRO, Egypt – Osama bin Laden urged sympathizers to join the “caravan” of martyrs as he praised one of the Sept. 11 suicide hijackers in a new video that emerged Tuesday to mark the sixth anniversary of the attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon.
Al-Qaida traditionally issues a video every year on the anniversary, with the last testament of one of the 19 hijackers involved in the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks. This year’s video showed hijacker Waleed al-Shehri addressing the camera and warning the U.S.: “We shall come at you from your front and back, your right and left.”
The new message, which AP Television News obtained from the IntelCenter monitoring group in suburban Washington, came days after the world got its first current look at bin Laden in nearly three years, with the release of a video Saturday in which the terror leader addressed the American people.
Later in the day it appeared on militant Web sites, with a note from al-Qaiada’s media production wing al-Sahab saying it was intentionally sent to television stations before being placed on the Internet.
It begins with an audiotape introduction by bin Laden. While his voice is heard, the video shows a still image of him, raising his finger. In the image, bin Laden has the same dyed-black beard and the same clothes — a white robe and cap and beige cloak — that he had in Saturday’s video.
But it was not known if the audiotape was recently made. In the past, al-Qaida has used footage and audio of bin Laden taped long ago for release later.
In the tape, bin Laden praised al-Shehri, saying he “recognized the truth” that Arab rulers were “vassals” of the West and had “abandoned the balance of (Islamic) revelation.”

600-pound minibus bomb defused in Turkish capital

ANKARA, Turkey – Authorities thwarted a bombing, possibly timed to coincide with the sixth anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks, as police found and defused more than 600 pounds of explosives Tuesday in a minibus parked near an Ankara market.
Turkey, a U.S. ally in the fight against global terrorism, has increased security on the anniversary of the 2001 attacks in the United States.
Sniffer dogs discovered the blue minibus at a multistory parking garage near an open food market. Its license plate was stolen from another vehicle, and the owner tipped police, the state-run Anatolia news agency said.
“A possible disaster has been prevented,” Gov. Kemal Onal said as he announced the discovery at the site. Anatolia said a witness alleged that an unidentified man parked the vehicle around 6 a.m., saying he had brought goods to sell at the market.
Police evacuated houses and cordoned off the area, and explosive experts defused the bomb in three hours, Police Chief Ercument Yilmaz said.
Yilmaz did not reveal details of the bomb, but Turkish media citing other police sources said sacks of explosives were found, speculating that it could be ammonium nitrate or cheap fertilizer, an ingredient used to make bombs.
Suicide bombers linked to al-Qaida hit Istanbul in 2003 with truck bombs — containing ammonium nitrate-based bombs — killing 58 people in attacks that targeted two synagogues, the British Consulate and a British bank. In February, a court sentenced seven people to life in prison for the bombings.

Al Qadi, who has repeatedly denied the allegations, remains free, still a prominent figure in Saudi Arabia.

JERUSALEM – A Palestinian rocket from the Gaza Strip landed near an army base in southern Israel early Tuesday, wounding 25 people, Israeli medics and the army said.

The army confirmed that a rocket had landed in a base about a half-mile north of the Gaza Strip and said dozens of people were being treated on the scene for moderate to light injuries.

Palestinian militants in the Gaza Strip fire crude rockets almost daily at towns in southern Israel, wreaking panic but rarely causing serious casualties. If confirmed, the injuries in Tuesday’s early morning attack would be the most caused by a single rocket.

Six years after 9/11, the jihad proceeds apace, and the UN investigates…Islamophobia.

How about something like this? Would that be okay to go forward? And of course, the epithet “far-right” is tossed about freely as an attempt to discredit the organizers of the parade and their message.

Meanwhile, jihadists in Belgium, the rest of Europe, and elsewhere continue to plot the overthrow — whether by violence or legal coercion — of secular, democratic systems. And police are sent out in force instead to stop people on the dreaded “far right” from saying something authorities find unpleasant.

Police scuffled with some of the 200 people who converged on two squares in the EU district of Brussels to protest against what they perceived as the rise of Islam as a significant political force across Europe. Officers handcuffed two leaders of the far-right Flemish Interest Party, which is very critical of Muslim immigrants, and took them away in police vans.

Protesters sought to use the Sept. 11 anniversary to point out that Islam threatens democracy and the rule of law in Europe.
The demonstration was initially planned by Stop Islamization of Europe, a loose alliance with roots in Germany, Britain and Denmark, which had predicted that 20,000 people would come to Brussels from all over Europe.

Brussels Mayor Mufti Freddy Thielemans banned the protest last month, calling SIOE an inflammatory group and its proposed demonstration a threat to public order. An appeals court upheld the ban Aug. 29.

Only 200 or so protesters showed up Tuesday for a protest lasting only 30 minutes. The demonstrators faced more than 100 police, backed up by water cannons and helicopters, who closed off streets around the EU headquarters.
Are they more afraid of the protest, or that certain offended members of the populace might use it as a pretext to stage an attack?

“We support the goals of the demonstration to protest against the lack of freedom of expression in this country,” said Frank Vanhecke, the head of the Flemish Interest Party, before he was bundled off to the police station. “And we also we fully agree that the rise of Islam in Europe poses a risk to our values.”

I just returned home from the anti-Islamization demonstration in Brussels. The Belgian police beat up the peaceful demonstrators in what even the Belgian public television call “an extremely violent fashion.” Here are some video images. The grey-haired man whom we see being attacked by the police first is Luk Van Nieuwenhuysen, the Vice-President of the Flemish Parliament. Shortly afterwards we see the police maltreating Frank Vanhecke, a member of the European Parliament and the party leader of the Vlaams Belang. We see how he is handcuffed and pushed into a police bus. Afterwards we also see the police “taking care” of Filip Dewinter, the VB group leader in the Flemish Parliament. We see how his arm gets caught between the closing doors of the bus. An Italian MEP and a French MEP were also arrested. The demonstrators were kept in cells for seven hours and released this evening.

A group of young Muslim apostates launches a campaign today, the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks on America, to make it easier to renounce Islam.

The provocative move reflects a growing rift between traditionalists and a younger generation raised on a diet of Dutch tolerance.

The Committee for Ex-Muslims promises to campaign for freedom of religion but has already upset the Islamic and political Establishments for stirring tensions among the million-strong Muslim community in the Netherlands.

Ehsan Jami, the committee’s founder, who rejected Islam after the attack on the twin towers in 2001, has become the most talked-about public figure in the Netherlands. He has been forced into hiding after a series of death threats and a recent attack.

In 1965 the Church in Holland made a declaration that freedom of conscience is above hanging on to religion, so you can choose whether you are going to be a Christian or not. What we are seeking is the same thing for Islam.”

Mr Jami, who has compared the rise of radical Islam to the threat from Nazism in the 1930s, is receiving only lukewarm support from his party which traditionally relies upon Muslim votes. His outspoken attack on radical Islam has led to a prelaunch walk-out from fellow committee founder Loubna Berrada, who herself rejected Islam.

Muslim schools offered cash to become state-run

“Faith schools make existing racial segregation worse and when you adjust for social class their results are no better than community schools.”

Keith Porteous Wood, executive director of the National Secular Society, called the proposals “plain madness”.

He said: “It is a sure-fire recipe for separation and future conflict to encourage children to think of themselves primarily as being of a particular religion, rather than encouraging them to concentrate on what we all have in common.”

Lessons: There are more than 100 private Muslim schools

Dozens of new Muslim state schools could be created in a controversial expansion of faith education planned by Ministers.

Schools Secretary Ed Balls promised funds to take more than 100 private Muslim schools into the state sector to meet rising parental demand.

But there were immediate warnings that setting up new faith schools could backfire by increasing religious tensions. Opponents said it could entrench segregation and called them “plain madness”.

And a Muslim leader admitted the biggest obstacle to the opening of new Islamic state schools was public fears that they would “produce fundamentalists”.

Mr Balls said the schools could be a force for improving community relations and warned that minority religions currently did not have enough free faith school places.

The schools do not have to admit pupils of other religions if they are over-subscribed and can follow their own curriculum for RE lessons.

The Government argues that bringing private faith schools into the state system would give Ministers greater control over schools which largely operate behind closed doors.

A Muslim group that wants to open a giant £100 million mosque in London has set its sights on “winning the whole of Britain to Islam”.

Tablighi Jamaat aims to build an Islamic complex near to the site of the 2012 Olympic stadium, with a mosque for 12,000 people, by far the largest religious building in Britain.

The organisation, which has millions of followers worldwide, insists that it is a peaceful, apolitical revivalist movement that promotes Islamic consciousness among individual Muslims. However, intelligence agencies have cautioned that the group’s ability to fire young men with a zeal for Islam acts as a staging post, for some, along a path that leads to jihadist terrorism.

Kafeel Ahmed, the Indian doctor who died from burns last month after trying to set off a car bomb at Glasgow Airport, is the latest in a line of terrorists for whose initial radicalisation Tablighi Jamaat has been blamed. The group (literally, the preaching party) belongs to the ultra-conservative Deobandi school of thought within Sunni Islam, whose adherents run more than 600 of Britain’s 1,350 mosques

In recent days The Times has exposed the virulently anti-Western creed of some British Deobandis who preach that non-Muslims are an evil and corrupting influence. Their defensive, isolationist approach to life in Britain is shared by many British supporters of Tablighi Jamaat.

One leading advocate, Ebrahim Rangooni, has said that the movement seeks to “rescue the ummah [the global Muslim community] from the culture and civilisation of the Jews, the Christians and [other] enemies of Islam”. Its aim, he wrote, is to “create such hatred for their ways as human beings have for urine and excreta”.

Mr Rangooni has also given warning to parents that non-Muslim schools “turn humans into animals” and that sending a Muslim child to a British college “is as dangerous as throwing them into hell with your own hands”.

Muslims say peace be upon him after every mention of Muhammad’s name, as a mark of respect. Muslims do the same when they write the Prophet’s name, adding pbuh.

WTF?

The Arabic translation of peace be upon him is sallallahu alayhi wa sallam which is usually abbreviated as saw.

The BBC uses pbuh in the Islam section out of courtesy, and we would do the same for any other religion if they had a similar phrase that was universally used as a sign of respect.

I invite you to embrace Islam,” says Osama bin Laden in his latest videotape. Most analysts take this as pious window-dressing and focus on what they believe to be the more substantive points of his message: his comments on the war in Iraq, his critique of capitalism, the similarity of much of what he says to Democratic Party talking points, and the like. But in fact the invitation to Islam is the heart, and the most revealing aspect, of bin Laden’s entire statement. The chief reason for this, of course, is because in traditional Islamic law, the invitation to Islam must precede an attack on non-Muslims. The Islamic prophet Muhammad makes this clear, directing Muslims to issue this invitation first, and if the unbelievers refuse, to invite them to enter the Islamic social order as second-class dhimmis, and if they refuse both, to go to war with them:

Fight in the name of Allah and in the way of Allah. Fight against those who disbelieve in Allah. Make a holy war, do not embezzle the spoils; do not break your pledge; and do not mutilate (the dead) bodies; do not kill the children. When you meet your enemies who are polytheists, invite them to three courses of action. If they respond to any one of these, you also accept it and withhold yourself from doing them any harm. Invite them to (accept) Islam; if they respond to you, accept it from them and desist from fighting against them….If they refuse to accept Islam, demand from them the Jizya [the poll tax on non-Muslims]. If they agree to pay, accept it from them and hold off your hands. If they refuse to pay the tax, seek Allah’s help and fight them. (Sahih Muslim 4294)

German suspects had deadline for attacks: report

BERLIN (Reuters) – Three suspected Islamist militants who were planning to attack American targets in Germany had orders to act by September 15 and knew police were hot on their trail before their arrest, a magazine said on Saturday.
The plan was foiled on Tuesday when police arrested two German converts to Islam and a Turk in the biggest German police investigation in the last 30 years.
According to surveillance details published in Der Spiegel magazine, the men had been given a two-week deadline for their planned strikes in a late August call from northern Pakistan that was monitored by German police.
In another detail to emerge on Saturday, a spokeswoman for the Federal Prosecutors Office in Karlsruhe confirmed a Focus magazine report that the suspects had obtained three small used vans in France and brought them to Germany.

“The goal, said Dr. Iqbal, is to persuade people of other religions to try to understand Islam and ‘build on our similarities rather than exploiting minor differences and promoting tension and hatred.'” It all sounds so very high-minded, and pre-emptively smears those who might point out that Dr. Iqbal and his friends have been somewhat less than forthcoming about certain unpleasant aspects of Islam, particularly as touching upon jihad and Islamic supremacism — why, such people are just “promoting tension and hatred.”

It’s very skillfully done, really, and not just in Youngstown, Ohio. Is it “promoting tension and hatred” to point out that Islam has a martial and supremacist tradition going back to the Qur’an and Muhammad, and that jihadists use that tradition today to gain recruits among peaceful Muslims? CAIR and others would have you think so, and have successfully cowed the mainstream media into thinking so too — with both liberal and conservative spokesmen fearing to discuss the connections between Islam and violence, for fear of offending Muslims and being seen as “promoting tension and hatred.”

But the truth is just the truth. It is not bigoted or multicultural or blue or green, it is just reality. The truth does not become false because some people say it is bigoted. If it is true that Islam has core traditions of violence and supremacism, and that the jihadists use them to promote violence, then it does no favor to peaceful Muslims to pretend that they don’t exist. Rather, it becomes all the more urgent to point them out, so as to aid those peaceful Muslims in genuine efforts at Islamic reform. You cannot reform what you are pretending does not need reform.

And if Dr. Iqbal’s clarification of misconceptions in turn needs clarification and completion itself, is it an “promoting tension and hatred” to provide that clarification and completion? I submit that it is not.

Mosque Tour Gets Questions Answered

YOUNGSTOWN — Muslims are just like anybody else, said Saeeda Yasmin Ghani, president of the Islamic Society of Greater Youngstown.
Indeed, a major purpose of a public open house Saturday at the Masjid Al-Khair mosque on Homewood Avenue was to demonstrate to the community the similarities between Muslims and people who belong to other religions.

“We want the community at large to be aware that the Muslim community exists here and has for 40 years,” Ghani said.

“We are peace-loving and ask that people not condemn the whole Muslim nation because of a few fanatics,” she said as the sixth anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks in New York City and Washington, D.C., nears.

“That was a horrendous act … for which there was no justification,” Ghani said.

* Good. The whole Muslim nation shouldn’t be condemned because of a few fanatics. But what is the whole Muslim nation doing to stop more Muslims from joining those fanatics? Can the whole Muslim nation do this without confronting the jihad ideology proffered to peaceful Muslims around the world by those few fanatics? Also, what is the meaning of this locution, “the whole Muslim nation”? If Islam is a nation, what is its relationship, or the relationship of the citizens of that nation, to the United States and United States citizenship?

There are major misconceptions about Islam, one of which is that people see it as a strange religion, when it really is a continuation of Judaism and Christianity. There are many similarities, said Dr. Khalid Iqbal, who conducted tours of the mosque during the open house.
* Dr. Iqbal does not seem to have informed his listeners that Islam is not solely a “continuation” of Judaism and Christianity, but a replacement and repudiation of them, since only “unbelievers” believe in the divinity of Christ (Qur’an 5:17) and both Jews and Christians are accursed of Allah (Qur’an 9:30).

I suspect that Dr. Iqbal and others would accuse me of “promoting tension and hatred” by mentioning these things, but nota bene: they are in the Qur’an, and those verses are not rejected or abrogated; they form part of core, mainstream Muslim belief about Judaism and Christianity. I didn’t put these things in the Qur’an, or make them part of mainstream Muslim belief. If Dr. Iqbal really wants to clear up misconceptions, why doesn’t he deal realistically with the existence of such material in the Qur’an and Islamic tradition, showing why its presence doesn’t preclude respect for non-Muslims as human beings? If he discussed it and offered some explanation, certainly he would have a much stronger claim to be clearing up misconceptions fully and honestly.

Major points
A major point of discussion is whether Muslim women are oppressed by the religion.

To the contrary, said Dr. Iqbal, a pediatrician. Muslim women had rights long before other religions even thought about it, such as the right to own property and to divorce.

Muslim women hold important jobs in the worlds of work and politics, such as Ghani, who leads the Youngstown Muslim community, Dr. Iqbal said.

“Certainly not,” said Ghani, when asked if Islam oppresses women.

Ghani, administrative director of the laboratory at St. Elizabeth Health Center, said Islam respects women. In areas where women are not respected — for instance, in Saudi Arabia, they are not permitted to drive — it is the culture, not the religion, she said.

Modesty is the reason men and women do not pray together in the kneeling prostrated position, Dr. Iqbal said. In the Masjid Al-Khair mosque, the women’s’ prayer area is separate from the men’s. In other temples, however, they may pray in the same room side by side, but not one behind the other, he said.

* There doesn’t seem to have been any mention of Qur’an 4:34, the notorious “wife-beating” verse, or 2:282, which values a woman’s testimony as half that of a man, or the many other passages which do foster the oppression of women. Here again: is it “promoting tension and hatred” to point out that they exist, and that Muslims read them and take them to heart, or is it a necessary component of any actual dialogue?

Another major misconception is that Muslims use violence to get their way, Dr. Iqbal said.
He said Muslims believe so strongly in social justice and fairness and equality between human beings that when that belief cannot be accomplished through peaceful means, the use of force is justified.

* Wordplay. What he means by ‘justice & fairness’ is according to the sharia and the Koran, not according to infidel, or ‘man-made’ law.. (SY)

For example, when Sadaam Hussein of Iraq invaded Kuwait, it became necessary to use force to get him out. Islam, in general, supported that effort in the first Gulf War, he said.

But, when it comes to matters of belief and religion, Islam does not encourage violence, Dr. Iqbal said.
* To put it mildly: He is lying:
There are so many verses of the Qur’an that spring immediately to mind as encouraging violence — 8:12, 9:5, 9:29, 47:4, 2:190-193, 8:60, etc. etc. etc. — that this does seem, I’m sorry to say, to be staggeringly disingenuous. Also, to say that it is a “major misconception” that “Muslims use violence to get their way” is simply false: Muslims do use violence to get their way — not all Muslims, to be sure, but there have been ten-thousand violent jihad attacks around the world since 9/11, and every one was an example of a Muslim using violence to get his way. Maybe they were all misusing Islam — it would be refreshing if Dr. Iqbal had explained to his audience how they are misusing it, and what efforts he and his companions are making to teach against this interpretation among their fellow Muslims.

Firsthand knowledge
Among the non-Muslim visitors at the open house were friends, Nancy Schulz of Canfield and Cathy Reinard of Youngstown, and Nancy’s daughter, Erin Kriss of Austintown.

“After all the stuff you hear and read [about Muslims], we wanted to come and learn for ourselves,” Schulz said.

* Buy a book. Log on to the internet. The last place you wanna go to learn about Islam is the mosque!

“It makes sense,” said Kriss, after learning why Muslim men and women pray separately. She found it amazing that the Quran, the Muslim’s holy book, has never changed, while there are several versions of the Christian Bible.

* This is da’wa, not fact. There are actually several versions of the Qur’an still extant (see Toby Lester’s 1999 Atlantic Monthly article for details), and the Bible variants are textual minutiae, not the doctrinal upheaval that traditional Islam envisions: that the early Christians altered their Scriptures to deify Jesus and remove references to Muhammad. That Islamic faith claims about the Qur’an and the Bible would be offered on this “outreach” night as fact — and swallowed by the credulous and uninformed — also suggests that the intent here was not openly to explain misconceptions in a spirit of peaceful coexistence, but something else altogether.

However, she thinks the explanation that Muslim women are treated equally “falls a little short,” however.
“Muslim men put women on a pedestal and think they are doing something good, but maybe they are really limiting them,” Reinard said….

Hmmm. Maybe.

The goal, said Dr. Iqbal, is to persuade people of other religions to try to understand Islam and “build on our similarities rather than exploiting minor differences and promoting tension and hatred.”
* I would be all for people of other religions understanding Islam. It would be helpful in that understanding if presentations like this one were a bit more forthcoming about the reasons why such presentations have to be held in the first place.

Murdoch warns on Muslims

Media mogul Rupert Murdoch has sounded a warning by saying Muslims would always identify themselves by religion before nationality.

Mr Murdoch told the Nine Network that care needed to be taken to avoid a divided society.

“You have to be careful about Muslims, who have a very strong, in many ways a fine, but very strong, religion, which supersedes any sense of nationalism wherever they go,” he said.
