Looting, revenge deaths persist in Gaza

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip – On Hamas’ first day of full rule in Gaza, crowds looted strongholds of the rival Fatah on Friday — stripping the home of one of the party’s strongmen down to the flower pots — and militants sent a man plunging to his death from a rooftop.

But the violence, which came despite a Hamas offer of amnesty for Fatah, was sporadic. Gaza’s streets, deserted in the past week of fighting, were crowded with cars, pedestrians and triumphant fighters with the Islamic militant group.

At Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas’ captured seaside office in Gaza City, a gunman sat down at the Fatah leader’s desk, picked up the phone and pretended to be calling Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. “Hello, Rice?” the gunman said. “Here we are in Abu Mazen’s office. Say hello to Abu Mazen for me.” Other gunmen rifled through Abbas’ belongings in a bedroom behind the office, lifting up a mattress and searching through drawers.

Safe in Ramallah, Abbas appointed his own prime minister on Friday after the Hamas prime minister ignored the president’s announcement that he had been fired. Hamas’ military takeover of Gaza, after five days of battle, formalized the separation between Gaza and the West Bank, which lie on either side of Israel.

The moderate government Abbas plans to appoint will have no say in Gaza, but stands a stronger chance than the Hamas-Fatah coalition it replaces of restoring foreign aid to the West Bank. He drew support — either explicitly or tacitly — from the European Union, the U.N., Egypt and Jordan.

A resident of a Hamas-dominated neighborhood, identifying himself only as Yousef for fear of reprisal by his neighbors, said Gazans would always back the winner, regardless of ideology.

“Today everybody is with Hamas because Hamas won the battle. If Fatah had won the battle they’d be with Fatah. We are a hungry people, we are with whoever gives us a bag of flour and a food coupon,” said Yousef, 30. “Me, I’m with God and a bag of flour.”

Ahmed al-Aziz, a 53-year-old merchant in Ramallah, said the fenced-in Gazans have little to lose. “Everybody here is worried about his interests or his business. In Gaza, people are poor. They don’t have work,” he said.

WASHINGTON — The United States has alerted American women to be on guard against sexual offenses in Syria.

* It is a very common custom in Egypt and other Islamic countries that the soldiers of Islam grope and grab at infidel women. After all, they are ‘war booty’- and why not check the merchandise?

In Syria’s proud culture it used to be less common, but recently the worshipers of the profit Muhammad have taken it upon themselves to introduce the practice to the local kufars:

The U.S. embassy in Damascus has reported a spate of sexual attacks on foreigners in Damascus. In a June 6 warden message, the embassy said the attacks targeted foreign women, Middle East Newsline reported.
“Two incidents in the past week involved women walking alone, either in the early morning or early evening,” the embassy said. “Another incident occurred several months ago when two women were walking together in one of the tunnels crossing underneath the Autostrad near Damascus University.”

Though none of these cases went beyond the stage of grabbing or groping, they were understandably upsetting for the victims,” the embassy said.
The embassy stressed that Damascus, with a population of seven million, maintains a low crime rate. The warden message urged Americans not to walk alone and avoid deserted areas.

“Don’t assume because you are close to home that this type of incident cannot happen,” the message said. “In both recent cases, the victims were close to home, although alone at the time.”

Bethlehem – Ma’an – The Fatah movement on Wednesday accused Israel of propelling the Palestinians into the current state of security chaos.
Spokesperson for the movement in the West Bank, Dr. Jamal Nazzal, told the Italian Radiotelevisione Italiana, known as RAI, “Israel paved the way for the growth of the Hamas movement in the Gaza Strip, by destroying the PA [Palestinian Authority] departments and security forces’ buildings between 2000 and the election to power of Hamas.”

Nazzal also accused Israel of “following a policy which allows Hamas to prevail and that will close the door for peace, the peace which both Hamas and Israel are scared of.”

False. Hamas is not “scared” of peace; they simply don’t want it. Last I checked, the Hamas Charter still calls for the destruction of Israel.

He urged the international community exert pressure on Israel to cease its “bloody” interference in Palestinian affairs.
If Nazzal is referring to the Israeli transfer of arms to Fatah, then maybe he is right. Israel should stop its “bloody” interference.

“Israel has turned the situation on its head, by ignoring arms-smuggling into Gaza, which is aimed to weaken the PA, and combating the idea of peace,” said Nazzal.
Israel has been prevented from stopping arms smuggling into Gaza. The Israelis were pressured into relinquishing the Philadelphi Route, which runs along the Gaza/Sinai border. Since then, dozens of tunnels have been dug in order to foster arms smuggling. Egypt has not helped the situation, turning a blind eye to the activity.

Press reports said Hamas fighters — Islamic radicals — are winning their battle with the Fatah faction, which is loyal to Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas.

VIENNA, Austria (AP) – The head of the U.N. nuclear watchdog agency said Thursday an attack on Iran over its refusal to freeze programs that could make nuclear weapons would be “an act of madness,” an indirect warning to the United States and Israel. International Atomic Energy Agency chief Mohamed ElBaradei also said Iran could be running close to 3,000 uranium-enriching centrifuges by the end of next month—a number that IAEA officials have described as the point of no return in the start of a large-scale program. …

He also urged Iran to offer a “self-imposed moratorium” on enrichment, describing it as a “good confidence-building measure” that could launch negotiations on the standoff

But the chief Iranian envoy to the meeting asserted his country would never suspend enrichment—the key issue of Security Council concern. Iran has said its nuclear program is peaceful and aims to generate energy, not bombs. …

ElBaradei described use of force as “an act of madness … (that) would not resolve the issue.”

“The next few months will be crucial,” he said: “Iran is building a capacity, a knowledge” of enrichment that is irreversible, while not providing evidence sought by his agency “that this is a peaceful program.”

“Even if Iran wants to have a weapon they are three to eight years away,” ElBaradei said, citing unidentified intelligence sources for his estimate. But “the longer we delay, the less option we have to reach a peaceful solution.”

Recently the US has responded to the likes of Mohamed ElBaradei by eliminating John Bolton from the UN.

Thirteen schools are set ablaze in the south, Islamic extremists are blamed.

In the majority Islamic area, violence is concentrated against schools and teachers. As the situation worsens authorities fear attacks on tourists in the north.

Well, as long as they don’t blame the Jooozzz….

Bangkok (AsiaNews/Agencies) – Violence in Southern Thailand once again is targeting schools and teachers. Yesterday 13 schools were set on fire in Yala and Pattani provinces in a series of simultaneous attacks and later a bomb exploded in front of another school Narathiwat wounding a security guard.

There have been no claims of responsibility but authorities accuse Islamic rebels, who see the schools as representing the state and a way of integrating Muslim and Buddhist children.

In Narathiwat, on June 11 two Buddhist teachers were killed in front of their pupils; one of them had asked to be transferred, in fear of his life. Another teacher was killed during lunch break. Many schools remained closet for a week in protest while teachers appealed for greater protection. Many now carry guns for protection and a State course is teaching them how to shoot.

June 12 in Yala an Islamic religion teacher was killed. A day later 200 Islamic youth marched with their faces covered in protest in front of a Mosque urging the authorities to find the assassins.

According to official data, since 2004, over 200 schools have been burned and 77 teachers killed both Muslim and Buddhist. In the Southern provinces of Yala, Pattani and Narathiwat, ex Muslim sultanates, the violence has increased in recent months and attacks have become daily occurrences. The army – present with over 30,000 ground troops – and the police are unable to control the situation and urge Buddhists to avoid specific areas. The rebels want independence from, Bangkok. Islamists and human rights groups accuse the security forces of summary executions and violence against the Muslim population. Yesterday in three separate attacks three Buddhists were killed and 8 soldiers injured. Since the unrest began over 2, 200 people have been killed.

Analysts forecast that sooner or later the rebels will target tourists in the North, in areas such as Phuket, Koh Samui or Bangkok. Tourism is an essential resource for the country. (PB)

Lockerbie bomber ‘to return to Libya’ after just seven years in prison

The Lockerbie bomber is at the centre of the first major row between the Government and the minority SNP administration in Scotland.

First Minister Alex Salmond said he had protested to Tony Blair over a deal that could lead to Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed al Megrahi, who is serving a life term in a Scottish jail, being transferred back to Libya.

Mr Salmond told the Scottish Parliament a deal on “judicial co-operation” struck between Libya and Britain on May 29 – when Tony Blair was in Tripoli – could involve Megrahi as it covered areas like “law, extradition and prisoner transfer”.

But neither the Scottish Parliament nor the Scottish government were consulted beforehand, said Mr Salmond.

“I have today written to the Prime Minister expressing my concern that it was felt appropriate for the UK Government to sign such a memorandum on matters clearly devolved to Scotland without any opportunity for this government and this Parliament to contribute,” he said.

Many MSPs from other parties gave varying degrees of support to Mr Salmond, including former Labour First Minister Jack McConnell, who said it was “regrettable” if the Executive had not been consulted.

But Mr Salmond came under fire from Labour peer Lord Foulkes, a Labour member of the Scottish Parliament.

“I have spoken to Number 10 Downing Street because I did not believe the statement made in the Parliament chamber,” Lord Foulkes told the Scottish Press Association.

“I have been told that al Megrahi is specifically excluded from the agreement.

“It covers terror suspects – the kind of people I am concerned about as a member of the intelligence and security committee appointed by the Prime Minister.”

Senior SNP sources said the memorandum neither excluded nor included any individual by name.

Lockerbie Families Protest Funds for Libya

Relatives of victims of the 1988 bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland, are demanding that Congress withhold State Department funding that would help normalize relations with Libya until Tripoli fully compensates the families of the 270 killed.

“I have seen a lot of people who have suffered through this,” said Siobhan Mulroy, an East Northport woman who lost her father, a brother, a sister-in-law, an aunt, an uncle and a cousin. “We want them to be held to the promises they made.”

Relatives of the lost – at least 10 victims lived on Long Island, scores more lived elsewhere in the New York area and 35 were Syracuse University students – say the U.S. government should halt plans to normalize relations with Libya until that country makes the last installment of a promised $10 million to the families of each of the bombing victims.

The Bush administration has requested $115.9 million to build an embassy in Tripoli and an additional $1.15 million in aid it says will help normalize relations with a Libyan nation that had been implicated in terrorist activity for decades before 2003, when it accepted responsibility for Lockerbie and renounced its efforts to develop weapons of mass destruction.

But by a unanimous vote last week, the House Appropriations Committee passed an amendment to block the funds until President George W. Bush certifies Tripoli is complying with its agreement to compensate the families.

The spending package is expected to come for a vote before the full House later this month.

Rep. Steve Israel (D-Huntington), a member of the committee whose Long Island district includes two relatives of bombing victims, said he pressed for the amendment because it appears Libya is shirking its responsibility.

He said the Libyans “have gotten what they wanted out of the deal, but these families have not gotten what they were promised.”

The bombing claimed the lives of 11 people on the ground and 259 passengers and crew, including 189 Americans. A Libyan intelligence officer was convicted in 2001 of murder in connection with the bombing.

In 2002, Libya agreed to settle claims from families by paying a total of $2.7 billion in three installments, as benchmarks were met in normalizing its relations with the rest of the world.

Forty percent of the money was to be released when UN sanctions against Libya ended, 40 percent when the United States ended trade sanctions, and the remaining 20 percent when the U.S. removed Libya from its list of nations that sponsor terrorism.

The first two installments were paid when sanctions were lifted in 2003 and 2004. But in February 2005, Libya withdrew $536 million from an escrow account that was to have been used to pay a final $2 million installment to each family, saying the United States had not removed Libya from its terror list.

The United States removed Libya from the list in May 2006. But Libya has yet to pay.

This year, the State Department sought $1.15 million from Congress to encourage Libya to eschew terrorism.

The State Department said the aid would help Libya retrain weapons scientists to work on civilian projects. The package also includes $200,000 to help U.S. companies capitalize on an economy long closed to Western investment, and $300,000 to promote democratic reforms.

But Kara Weipz, a spokeswoman for Victims of Pan Am Flight 103, said that to fail to require Libya to make full restitution would be an injustice.

“That’s not the punishment I would accept for the murder of my brother and 269 other victims,” she said.

The Queensland government is trying to encourage employers to employ more Muslims [there has been a well grounded fear so far in this regard] and allay fears of having to change canteen food supply and make provisions for prayer rooms. A sum of money has been allocated to encourage such employment and the debunking of ‘myths’ surrounding Islam (which Ayaan Hirsi Ali said were founded on reality)

Melbourne, June 12: In a bid to encourage employers to hire Muslims, the Australian Queensland Government has given a sum of 19,100 dollars to refugee settlement agency Assisting Collaborative Community Employment Support Services (ACCES Services) to debunk the “myths” surrounding the faith. The government had to take this step as employers started overlooking Muslim workers, apparently to avoid making special arrangements for their prayers or change the canteen menu. (source)

It would be interesting to know where this push has come from. Queensland is home to the ‘Queenland Muslim Times ’, which is not just an ethnic newspaper but a strident advocate of special rights for Muslims due to their ‘victim’ status. The sooner that Australians stop thinking in terms of this wailing victimisation of Muslims, the better.

Of course, Muslims should be encouraged to work, but the push for special provisions is a dangerous path to follow – once started, according to those who have lived with Muslims overseas, it does not end and it always works to the detriment of the host society.

New Mosque for Cairns

Our readers will be pleased to know that Cairns is going to have its own brand new mosque. It is expected the temple should be hopefully ready by the next Ramadan. There is already a mosque – a former Christian church in Mareeba, about 50 kms west of Cairns which, apart from the word ‘Mosque’, proudly displays several large signs in Arabic (why bother with an English translation).
The new architectural monstrosity in Cairns apparently has local council approval as well as full support of many in the local non-Muslim community (future dhimmis) .

The mosque will serve 25-30 Sunni families and probably all the rich Muslim tourists from the oil-gulf-states brought to Oz by rapidly expanding Emirates Airline.
Who knows, if we are lucky we can probably replace India, Thailand and Philippines as the sex-tourism destination for the Saudis.

“Resolutions inappropriate solution to nuclear misunderstanding: FM,”

Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki said here Tuesday the West would gradually understand that adoption of different resolutions would not be an appropriate solution to the “misunderstanding” over Iran’s peaceful nuclear case.
Addressing ambassadors of Arab states to Tehran, he said, “The necessity of adopting a logical solution arises day by day.” He added, “Establishment of a consortium to enrich uranium in Iran will be an effective way to increase confidence. In that case, negotiations will focus on non-diversion.”
