Trad scotches sheik sack report Article from AAP

AN Islamic group that claims to have sacked the mufti of Australia Sheik Taz al Din al Hilali does not have the authority to do so, spokesman for the Islamic Friendship Association Keysar Trad has said.

The Australian Federation of Islamic Councils (AFIC) has abolished the role of mufti and severed all ties with the sheik, Fairfax Newspapers report today.

AFIC President Ikebal Patel told Fairfax the organisation owned the title of mufti and had stopped paying Sheik Hilali’s salary.

But Mr Trad, president of the Islamic Friendship Association, said the AFIC did not have the authority to strip the mufti of his position.

“AFIC is not in a position to sack the mufti at all,” Mr Trad told Sky News from Lebanon today.

Mr Trad said AFIC gave Sheik Hilali the position of mufti back in 1989, but it had gone into administration last year.

He said the organisation was now simply was trying to show it remained relevant, since coming back on board in February.

“The president of this organisation is dealing with issues that are well beyond his authority,” he said.

“The imams board, which was formed as a result of a reference group recommendation, has now taken over the decisions about the position of mufti. That imams board has a large number of imams from all over Australia making a decision about this position,” said Mr Trad.

Mr Trad said Sheik Hilali told AFIC to stop paying him last year when the federation went into administration.

“Mid-way through last year he told the organisation to stop paying him. The organisation went into administration and they said they could no longer pay their employees. He said to them, ‘I don’t want to be paid for this position, I don’t need to be paid, I’m serving the community’,” Mr Trad said.

In February, AFIC said in a statement it had been under administration since September 2006 after the suspension of its executive committee.

The board was reformed on February 25, when new office bearers were elected.

Mr Trad said Sheik Hilali was currently attending a conference in Turkey and knew nothing of the controversy surrounding his position.

He told Sky News the sheik remained the person most qualified to hold the position of mufti in Australia, saying you would have to look all over the world to find a person with the same level of knowledge.

Hilali sacking claims are ‘a gross exaggeration’

Not so fast: You see, he is sacked except when he isn’t. He is ’embarrassing’- except when he isn’t. Because after all he is a ‘good’ Muslim, (one recent poster even called him ‘a man of God’) and like it or not, he will be with us for as long as he lives. Unless of course he goes to the slammer for hate-speeches, incitement and terrorist activities, or our timid government strips him of citizenship and sends him back to Egypt. Fat chance!

The Australian Federation of Islamic Councils says speculation that the senior Muslim cleric, Sheikh Taj el-Din Al Hilali, has been sacked are a gross exaggeration.

Council president Ikebal Patel says no decision has been made on Sheikh Al Hilali’s future since the Australian National Imams Council met two weeks ago.

Mr Patel says Sheik Al Hilali has not been paid by the council for eight months, but he has not been sacked.

“He hasn’t been sacked and you know that is the wrong use of the word when you describe the mufti’s present position,” he said.

Mr Patel has asked for space for the community to work things out.

“The Australian Muslims through the Australian National Council of Imams should be given the time and also the respect to do its deliberation and decide as to what the process should be and who should be appointed as the mufti if at all there should be anyone in the position,” he said.

It is Saturday afternoon in Kemang, the garish bar district in the Indonesian capital Jakarta. The young patrons partying at poolside on the roof deck of the trendy restaurant “Edge” enjoy a panoramic view of the entire southern part of the city. The only reminder that these partygoers are unwinding in the world’s largest Muslim country is the muezzin’s call to prayer at a nearby mosque.
Well-off models, successful trendsetters, designers and young filmmakers make up the guest list, and everyone is in high spirits, at least until Izabel Jahja, 30, speaks up. Wearing a tiny bikini, she raises her glass of red wine in a toast and says: “Let’s enjoy life, as long as our country continues to allow it.”

A brutal spectacle

With 221 million inhabitants, of which 194 million are Muslims, the island nation is not only Southeast Asia’s most populous country, but is also home to the world’s largest Muslim population. And that population looks to be growing increasingly devout. Significantly more women wear the headscarf today than a decade ago, and the number of Indonesians making the pilgrimage to Mecca grows year after year. Alcoholic beverages are disappearing from the shelves of supermarkets, and in some places those who violate the Islamic ban on alcohol already face public whipping — a brutal spectacle that is even broadcast on local television stations.

Dutch Imam Salam Urges Followers To “Harm State” Counseling “Don’t Pay Taxes”

San Francisco, CA – PipeLineNews.org – Ahmed Salam, the radical Imam from Tilburg, Holland who outraged a significant part of the country’s population in November of 2004 when he refused to shake the hand of then Dutch Minister of Immigration Rita Verdonk, on the religious grounds that he would not touch the hand of a woman, has not moderated his radical Islamist agitation.

This despite having taken a integration course paid for by the Dutch government.

In fact he is stepping up his campaign.

Salam, who only speaks Arabic though having been in the country for over 15 years, was reported by the Netherlands based Brabants Dagblad as having called upon his followers, “Do harm to the Dutch state, don’t pay taxes.”

Stung by the almost universal criticism by Holland’s non-Muslim population [Muslims comprise approximately 10% of the country’s residents] Imam Salam now claims he never urged tax-refusal, trying to stave off calls for his deportation.

Capitalizing on this controversy Tilburg’s Muslims have offered an olive branch of singular brazenness, telling the city’s town council that they will stop going to the Imam’s radical mosque if the council builds them another one, at public expense in the center of town.

Marking the extraordinary degree of Dutch dhimmitude, Tilburg lawmaker Jan Hamming has already agreed to that proposal and is urging city residents to help him find a suitable location.

What Tilburg’s officials fail to understand is that any Muslims who have been attending Salam’s mosque are of the radical Islamist persuasion in the first place and therefore opening another mosque with Salam’s “ex-congregants” would only result in two strongholds from which to operate.

Dutch politician Geert Wilders leader of the Freedom Party is heading the call to have a preaching ban enforced on Imam Salam, possibly stripping him of his Dutch citizenship and having him deported.

Tilburg mayor Vreeman has also reacted to Salam’s insolence, stating that the Imam “does not belong here” a suggestion which has brought both criticism and support in this increasingly polarized society.

MOSCOW, March 4 (Reuters) – Plans to build a memorial to the 333 hostages killed three years ago in the Beslan school siege have sparked a row between Christians and Muslims in Russia.

The local Russian Orthodox diocese says it will build a church in the grounds of Beslan’s school No. 1 to commemorate the victims — half of them children — killed in a clash between insurgents and Russian troops.

“It is not acceptable to present this tragedy as the tragedy of followers of only one religion,” Sheikh Ravil Gainutdin, chairman of the Council of Russian Muftis, said in a statement.
