Bali mastermind suspect escapes dawn raid

A FEARED Muslim rebel leader and one of the suspected masterminds of the 2002 Bali bombings escaped a dawn raid on their island hideout in the southern Philippines today.

Isnilon Hapilon, one of the heads of Abu Sayyaf, the Philippines’ fiercest militant group, and Umar Patek, believed to have planned the Indonesian resort island attack that killed more than 200, including 88 Australians, fled their camp on Jolo, 950km south of Manila.

Major Eugene Batara said three Abu Sayyaf rebels were captured and two M16 rifles seized in the raid, which is part of a long-running campaign to flush Islamic militants from Jolo, where they train and plot attacks across South-East Asia.

Maj Batara said US-trained troops were still combing areas around the camp.

Hapilon, who has a $US5 million ($6.12 million) bounty on his head from the US Government for kidnapping Americans, has emerged as one of Abu Sayyaf’s top strategists after troops killed the group’s top two leaders and more than 70 members in a campaign that started in August last year.

Umar Patek and suspected Bali accomplice Dulmatin, also an Indonesian, are sheltering with the Abu Sayyaf.

Abu Sayyaf is one of four Islamic rebel groups operating in the southern Philippines, where Muslims have fought for decades for independence from the largely Catholic nation.

But while other rebels have entered peace talks, Abu Sayyaf is involved in regular clashes with government troops, although its practice of kidnapping for ransom has fallen away in recent years.

Thailand: The South is ‘Restive’- again!

The 55-year-old’s body was ripped in half when a 10-kilogram bomb placed underneath his ute truck exploded in Yala, one of three insurgency-plagued provinces bordering Malaysia.

“The bomb was fixed under his car and detonated while he was driving. The explosion totally destroyed the vehicle, and also seriously injured the victim’s friend, who was also in the car,” police said.

A soldier was injured earlier today in Yala when a mobile phone-triggered bomb exploded. Police said insurgents were targeting seven soldiers on patrol in the province.

Also in Yala today, a 40-year-old Muslim man was shot dead at his rubber plantation, while in neighbouring Narathiwat province yesterday, a 52-year-old Muslim man was shot and killed near his home, police said.

More than 2000 people have been killed in Thailand’s Muslim-majority south since an insurgency broke out in January 2004.

Thailand’s military-installed government has launched a raft of peace measures, only to see the attacks escalate in the past six months.

The attacks have also become more gruesome, with two beheadings last month.

The BBC report of President Ahmadinejad’s announcement of the release the 15 British service personnel quotes him thus:

On the occasion of the birth anniversary of the great prophet of Islam, and on the occasion of Easter and Passover, I would like to announce that the great nation of Iran, while it is entitled to put the British military personnel on trial, has pardoned these 15 sailors and gives their release to the people of Britain as a gift.

Why is this interesting? Well, for President “wipe Israel from the map/remove  it from the pages of time/take your pick” Ahmadinejad to mention that well-known Jewish festival Passover, would be quite something. It’s almost beyond belief that the diminutive anti-Semite Ahmadinejad would allow the words to pass his lips. So unbelievable in fact that I thought I’d Google corroboration of the BBC’s take on the story. Before I started, I checked out the other sources listed on the Wikinews entry and none of these corroborates the BBC take. I then checked some other news sites:

Still nada. In fact, the only other references I can find to “Passover” in the Google search results are sundry blogs and other commentary sites.

Dear Editor,
Ms. Al-Zaman would have us believe that the misogynistic practices that Hirsi Ali writes about – and has worked tirelessly against- have nothing to do with Islam. Yet these practices, including forced marriages and female genital mutilation (FGM), are practiced today in many Muslim countries and in Muslim communities in Europe. In Egypt, an attempt by the government in 1996 to outlaw female circumcision was vehemently opposed by Islamic clerics. The Al-Azhar University in Egypt has issued three fatwas supporting FGM, saying that it is mandatory for girls. When Ayatollah Khomeini took over in Iran in 1979, one of the first actions he took was to lower the marriage age for women from 13 to 9. He based this on the fact that the Muslim prophet Mohammed married a 9-year old (Aisha). Since Mohammed is considered a perfect role model to Muslims, Khomeini had religious justification for allowing marriage to young girls. In these two examples, religious grounds were used to justify these misogynistic practices. If only Ms. Al-Zaman would try to persuade her Muslim brothers and sisters to stop these barbaric practices, rather than attempt to convince us that her religion has nothing to do with it.
Ms. Al-Zaman is the director of communications with CAIR. At least five of CAIR’s employees and board members have been arrested, convicted, deported, or otherwise linked to terrorism-related charges and activities. This fact would not go unnoted if any other advocacy group had such a record.
I’m delighted that such a brave, progressive thinker as Ayaan Hirsi Ali is coming to the United States.

AUSTRALIA’S most senior Islamic cleric, Sheik Taj al-Din al-Hilali, called on the Muslim world to unite behind the radical Iranian regime and to serve in its “trenches” in comments published during a visit to Tehran last weekend.

As Iran was involved in a standoff with Western powers over the detention of 15 British naval personnel seized after they were accused of trespassing in its waters last month, the Iranian media were using Sheik Hilali’s quotes in a propaganda drive.

The controversial Australian mufti was quoted as saying that the global Islamic nation would never “kneel” to its enemies.

In reports published in Iran on Saturday, Sheik Hilali was quoted as saying that Muslims needed to overcome their sectarian divisions that have led to much “bloodletting” in Iraq.

Taliban Behead Afghan Journalist

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan (AFP) – Taliban militants on Sunday beheaded an Afghan reporter kidnapped last month with an Italian journalist, after the government refused to negotiate his release, a Taliban spokesman said.

“We killed Ajmal (Naqshbandi) today at 1505 (1135 GMT) because the government did not respond to our demands,” said Shohaabuddin Atal, spokesman for top Taliban military commander Mullah Dadullah. “He was beheaded.”

“They (the government) did not contact us,” he told AFP.

Atal said the journalist was beheaded in Helmand’s Hazar Joft district and the Taliban leaders would decide whether to return his body to his relatives.

Afghan private news agency Pajhwok reported that a spokesman for the Afghan intelligence services, Saeed Ansari, had confirmed the execution. But there has been no independent verification.

Another Taliban spokesman had earlier said that the militants had set the deadline for Naqshbandi’s execution on Monday unless the government agreed to release more jailed insurgents.

“Monday is the last deadline. He (Naqshbandi) will be killed unless the government complies with our demands,” Taliban spokesman Yousuf Ahmadi told AFP by telephone.

When asked why he was killed on Sunday, Atal said: “Because the government did not contact us and we knew they wouldn’t care for him so we killed him today.”

One of Naqshbandi’s relatives said that the Taliban contacted them early Sunday.

“They called us and said we should pressurise the government. Their tone this morning was very nasty,” the desperate relative, who asked not to be named, said..

“We heard media reports that he has been killed. No Taliban has contacted us about his death directly,” he added.

The Taliban are waging a deadly insurgency that includes suicide attacks and kidnappings of foreign journalists and aid workers, and their local colleagues, after being ousted from power five years ago by US-led troops.

Naqshbandi was captured in southern Helmand province on March 4 with Italian journalist Daniele Mastrogiacomo, who was freed two weeks later in a controversial exchange for five Taliban prisoners. Their Afghan driver was beheaded before Mastrogiacomo’s release.

President Hamid Karzai said this week no more hostage deals with the Taliban would be made, saying the one he made to free Mastrogiacomo was an “extraordinary” situation.

He said the deal was made because Italy’s government — which has 1,800 troops in Afghanistan — could have collapsed.

La Repubblica newspaper, for which Naqshbandi worked as a interpreter, voiced “dismay” over the reported execution, which Italian Prime Minister Romano Prodi also denounced.

“I learned with anguish the news of the murder of the interpreter that followed that of the (correspondent’s) driver,” he said. “We strongly condemn this absurd crime.”

US national security spokesman Gordon Johndroe said: “This barbaric killing reminds us of why the United States and NATO are in Afghanistan in the first place: To help the good people of that country defeat the Taliban extremists and their al-Qaeda allies.”

The Taliban are also holding two French nationals and three Afghan colleagues after abducting them on Tuesday in the southwestern province of Nimroz.

The province’s governor and police chief have said they were likely to have been moved to Helmand where Naqshbandi was killed. Helmand adjoins Nimroz.

Atal told AFP earlier Sunday that the Taliban would decide the fate of the French nationals once Naqshbandi’s case was over.

The rebels have not yet made any demand in return for the release of the French aid workers, who were working for the Terre d’Enfance (A World for Our Children).

The Taliban had its deadliest year in 2006 since its ousting in 2001 with hundreds of people killed, mostly militants but also local and foreign soldiers and civilians.

There is no army on earth as mobile as the Taleban.

I remember it as their secret weapon when I travelled with them in the mid-1990s, as they swept aside rival mujahideen to take most of the country.

Piled into the back of open Toyota trucks, their vehicle of choice, and carrying no possessions other than their weapons, they can move nimbly.

The bare arid landscape of northern Helmand suits them well.

After one hair-raising race across the desert last week, patrolling the large area where they can move at will, they screamed to a stop at a river bank.

Hardy

It was sunset, and time to pray before breaking the Ramadan fast they had kept since sunrise.

Before praying, they washed in a dank-looking pool at the side of the almost-dry river bed.

Afghanistan has been in the grip of a severe drought for several years, but the lack of clean water does not seem to concern these hardy men.

Taleban fighters appear both ferocious and fearless

They clean their teeth with sharpened sticks taken from trees, and sleep with only the thinnest shawls to cover them.

They have surprised the British by the ferocity of their fighting and their willingness to take casualties.

Their belief in the imminence of paradise means that few exhibit fear.

When we stopped for the night, they would break into groups to eat in different houses in a village.

They demand and get food and shelter from places where they stop, but it is impossible to say how enthusiastic the villagers really are.

* Impressed? Not.  The villagers are probably a lot less enthusiastic to feed the Taliban than this degenerated idiot would have us believe. But do they have a choice?  David Loyn, with his homo- erotic infatuation with  assassins and barbaric mass-murderers,  doesn’t care.

Guys like him are not only  useful idiots, but dangerous enemy agents. And this is supported by Al Bebeceera, by effeminate, ‘enlightened’ western elitists  who are befuddled with turbans and beards ….
