The BBC’s appointment of a Muslim as head of religion and ethics is insulting to Christians, an Ulster Unionist assembly member has said.

Retired Presbyterian minister Dr Robert Coulter said the appointment of Aaqil Ahmed was “a juvenile gimmick”.

“According to the Church of England 70% of the UK are Christian, 3% are Muslim yet the BBC for its head of religious broadcast appoints a Muslim,” he said.

Religious commentator Clifford Longley said the complaints were “spurious”.

“It seems to me that no denomination or faith can claim to own a position like that, which must be filled on its merits.”

“The purpose of the BBC’s religious broadcasting department is not to propagandise on behalf of any particular religion – the implication of this complaint is that it is,” he said.

The post – considered one of the most influential religious roles in the country – has gone to Aaqil Ahmed, who has been working as an executive at Channel 4.

The appointment will cause dismay among the Christian churches.

Archbishop of Canterbury Dr Rowan Williams raised concerns over the prospect of a Muslim head of religious broadcasting during a meeting with the corporation’s director general Mark Thompson in March.

It comes at a time of deepening worries among Christian leaders that their faith is being sidelined and downgraded by authorities.

BBC spends £200,000 of licence fees on legal fight to suppress report on anti-Israeli ‘bias’

The BBC has spent hundreds of thousands on a legal fight to block publication of a report on alleged bias in its Middle East reporting.

The Law Lords today ruled that a campaigner who is pursuing a battle to force the broadcaster to make the report public can continue his fight.

But this means the BBC will probably have to spend thousands more as the case is set to rumble on for months until a final decision is reached.

The corporation is understood to have already used about £200,000 of licence fee cash trying to prevent it having to release the Balen Report.

Israeli media reports that Hamas took over the first floor of the building that the BBC offices in Gaza last night and fired rockets from there, trapping the journalists above. Despite the fact that their reporters have now escaped the building, the BBC has so far not said anything about this.

When I was interviewed on the BBC last week, I commented on the pervasive intimidation of the MSM in Gaza, which is one of the reasons that there were none there when the hostilities broke out. I pointed out that the last journalist resident in Gaza, Alan Johnston, now the editor in chief, only survived because he was so openly pro-Palestinian, and even he got kidnapped and brutalized.

* BS: Johnston was not kidnapped and not brutalized. Johnston faked his kidnapping. It is confirmed that this son of a whore was in the enemy camp all along, but still gets awards and recognition from Britain’s dhimmi government. Why? Because he’s a Muslim ‘revert’-you go figure!

THREAT TO BLOW UP EASTENDERS OVER TRIVIA SHOW

Furious Muslims (when are they ever not ‘furious?) have issued threats against EastEnders bosses over a storyline that showed an Asian character breaking his Ramadan fast.

Postman Masood Ahmed was spotted snacking on a chapati during the holy month.

BBC chiefs said the incident was supposed to show the “fallibility” of Masood – played by Nitin Ganatra, 40.

But hundreds of angry Muslims have accused the soap of mocking their religion. And some have even threatened the show’s bosses on internet sites.

BBC bombarded with complaints after EastEnders shows Muslim snacking during Ramadan 

The BBC has received more than 100 complaints after EastEnders showed a Muslim breaking their Ramadan fast by eating a snack on the soap opera.

It is believed that a large number of Muslims were angered by the recent storyline involving character Masood Ahmed claiming it insulted their religion.

The married Asian postman, played by Nitin Ganatra, was spotted by wheel-chair bound character Ian Beale having a bite to eat during the holy month.

Hindu and Sikh leaders have accused the BBC of pandering to Britain’s Muslim community by making a disproportionate number of programmes on Islam at the expense of covering other Asian religions.

A breakdown of programming from the BBC’s Religion and Ethics department, seen by The Independent, reveals that since 2001, the BBC made 41 faith programmes on Islam, compared with just five on Hinduism and one on Sikhism.

A BBC presenter has attacked coverage of Afghanistan’s ongoing war, claiming TV reporters are not covering the ‘humanity of the Taliban’.

Lyse Doucet, a presenter and correspondent on BBC World News, was speaking at a discussion of TV reporting of the war in the country…

Asked what was missing in British coverage, she added: ‘It may sound odd but the humanity of the Taliban, because the Taliban are a wide, very diverse group of people.”

Let’s report the Taliban the Doucet way. So, readers, find the unreported humanity in these recent Taliban happynings:
