A delicate report on a brutal subject, from Agence France-Presse: 

British police will offer new identities to victims of so-called “honour” violence in a bid to combat the crime that kills one person a month.

London’s Metropolitan Police said up to a dozen people were murdered annually in honour violence – defined by the police as crimes committed in a bid to protect family or communal honour.

Officers estimate a further 500 are forcibly married and then raped, attacked or falsely imprisoned. 

Do tell us, Agence France-Presse; who is responsible for these terrible acts? 

Typically, women are the victims of honour violence, which has been linked to certain interpretations of religious and cultural norms.

 Nothing to do with Islam, of course! Islam ‘elevates’ women:

*  Son strangles mother and later chops her body in pieces on suspicion of “bad character”

*  Afghanistan: Self-immolation on the rise among women/because of the ‘glass ceiling’, no doubt!

* Just when they  Yusuf almost got us to believe that honor killing is a pre-Islamic practice that has nothing to do with Islam and, anyway: Christians do it, Hindus do it, Buddhists do it, even the Babboons do it…! some creepy ‘lawmaker’ crawles out from under his rock and gives the whole game away!

A manual of Islamic law certified by Al-Azhar as a reliable guide to Sunni orthodoxy says that “retaliation is obligatory against anyone who kills a human being purely intentionally and without right.” However, “not subject to retaliation” is “a father or mother (or their fathers or mothers) for killing their offspring, or offspring’s offspring.” (‘Umdat al-Salik o1.1-2).

In other words, someone who kills his child incurs no legal penalty under Islamic law.

Why does this stipulation appear in a manual of Islamic law if this has nothing to do with Islam? I’m glad that some Pakistani lawmakers in this AP story expressed horror at what Israr Ullah Zehri said, but they will need to confront the tolerance for this practice in Islamic law if they ever hope to end it.

In other words, someone who kills his child incurs no legal penalty under Islamic law.

*  Furthermore, if you kill your father, mother, sister or brother for leaving Islam, you are carrying out the will of Allah.

UN takes notice of honour-killings in Pakistan

KARACHI: The United Nations (UN) has taken notice of the frequent cases of ‘honour-killings’ (karo-kari) of women in Pakistan, Daily Times learnt on Thursday. Sources in the Interior Ministry told Daily Times that United Nations’ In-charge of World Women Monitoring Mr Yakinerturk has sent a letter to the Interior Ministry expressing concern over the rising number of honour-killings in Pakistan. It has also been learnt that the UN has asked for the copies of registered cases and detailed progress reports of 10 murder cases, which took place in the name of honour across the country last year. The victims in these cases included Saba and Zarina Mirani killed in Karachi, Inayat Khatoon in Shikarpur, Sakina Khatoon, Naseema and Rehana in Lahore, Safiya in Sialkot, Saba in Multan, Shahzadi in Faisalabad and Amjada in Swat. faraz khan
