Thailand: Jihad against Buddhists, pregnant women, and the elderly

In 2004 the Thai’s tried  origami versus jihad, but the Muslims said, “Paper birds mean nothing here.” Because it worked so well, perhaps we should try it again, does that make sense?

BANGKOK, June 11 (Reuters) – Three people, including a pregnant woman, were killed in shootings by suspected separatist insurgents in Thailand’s restive deep south, police said on Thursday.

The attacks came amid an escalation of violence in the predominantly Muslim region, where 23 people have been killed and more than 40 wounded over the past six days.

A Buddhist man and his four-months pregnant wife were shot dead and an elderly woman wounded in the Chanae district of Narathiwat, one of three provinces near the Malaysian border where nearly 3,500 people have died in five years of unrest.

Police said their attackers were armed with assault rifles and pistols and opened fire as they rode past on motorcycles.

It was the second time in just over a week that a pregnant woman had been shot dead in the rubber-rich region,where more than 30,000 troops have been stationed since 2004 in an unsuccessful bid to quell the violence….

YALA, Thailand (Reuters) – Gunmen killed 10 people and wounded 12 others when they opened fire with automatic weapons at a mosque during evening prayers in Thailand’s restive Muslim south, police said on Monday.

A rubber tapper was also shot dead and nine soldiers were wounded by a roadside bomb on Monday, one of the worst days of violence in months in the region bordering Malaysia where a shadowy insurgency has rumbled since 2004.

Police said at least five gunmen sprayed bullets into the mosque in the Cho Airong district of Narathiwat, one of three mainly Muslim provinces where more than 3,000 people have died in five years of near daily bomb and gun attacks.

“The gunmen sneaked into the mosque and opened fire as the victims kneeled on the floor praying,” regional army spokesman Colonel Prinya Chaidilok told Channel 11 television.

The brazen attack was one of three on Monday in Narathiwat province, which has seen a surge in violence in the last week.

A Buddhist rubber tapper was shot dead by unknown gunmen on a motorcycle in Rangae district and nine soldiers were wounded, one seriously, when a powerful roadside bomb exploded under their vehicle in neighboring Rueso district, police said.

Nineteen people have been killed and 40 injured since Friday in the region’s latest surge in violence.

No group has made a credible claim of responsibility for any of the attacks in the region, which was an independent Muslim sultanate until annexed by predominantly Buddhist Thailand a century ago.

Roadside bomb kills 3 in insurgency-plagued southern Thailand

* Tiny bits of truth in otherwise skewed reporting: “un-Islamic values” turn Muslims into teacher killers and school-burners, just like in Afghanistan and in Paki-land: we’re all  Taliban now!

Police said the militants believed the government was trying to indoctrinate students with un-Islamic values at state schools, making teachers prime targets of the violence.

2 bombs in southern Thailand wound 71: the South is “restive” again!

SUKHIRIN, Thailand (AP) — Suspected Muslim insurgents detonated two bombs at a tea stall and shopping area Tuesday in insurgency-wracked southern Thailand, killing one person and wounding at least 71, police said.

It was the largest attack in several months in Thailand’s restive south, which has been gripped by a Muslim insurgency since 2004.

Three Killed, School Burned Down In Thailand’s Muslim South

YALA, Thailand (AFP)–Three people have been killed in the latest separatist violence in Thailand’s Muslim-majority south, while an elementary school was burned to the ground, police said Friday.

Two Muslim militants were killed and a policeman injured Thursday evening during a 10-minute gunfight with security forces, police said.

One more dead and 23 injured in the south Thailand jihad: Woman killed in Thai tea shop blast.

A bomb has exploded in front of a crowded tea shop in southern Thailand, killing one woman and injuring 23 other people, police said.

The bomb was hidden in a bag and placed inside a telephone kiosk in front of a busy tea shop in Yala’s urban area, said police Lt Col Jirasit Lomae.

The bombing appeared to be the latest attack by Islamic insurgents whose activities have led to more than 2,200 deaths since January 2004.

(BangkokPost.com) – Insurgents opened fire on a police officer in the heart of a market in Narathiwat province, Thursday morning, riddling him with 14 bullets and killing him on the spot.

The shooting in the morning market caused shoppers to panic and run for their lives.

Sen Sgt Maj Suriya Malaimal, 51, was shot as he was helping his wife sell food at the market. Police said eight insurgents on four motorcycles ambushed him.

They also stole his M-16 rifle before escaping.

Meanwhile, the State Railway of Thailand decided to postpone the resumption of trains in the deep South to Friday after saboteurs damaged many sections of track. They caused a derailment that injured 14 passengers on Monday.

The State Railway earlier said the trains would resume operations on Thursday but decided to keep the trains out of the southernmost provinces after officials found bolts and sleepers were removed from tracks in Yala that could have sent a train careering into a nearby bridge and canal.

Thai army advises suspending issue of visas to Cambodian Khmer Muslims, suspected of migrating to increase Muslim population in southern provinces

SA KAEO, June 7 (TNA) – The Royal Thai Army’s Burapa Task Force, which oversees the border with Cambodia, will advise the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to consider suspending issuing visas to Cambodian Muslims after finding that increasing numbers are crossing the border and travelling to the kingdom’s southern provinces, a senior officer said on Thursday.
Burapha Special Task Force Division 12 commander Col. Chaichaiyan Sothornchai said the special task force is investigating information that the southern insurgents were using the strategy to increase the Muslim population in the three southernmost provinces by encouraging Muslims from Cambodia and Myanmar to join their co-religionists in the South.
