UPDATE 12.35pm: A PLAN to force families to cover up to avoid offending Muslims at a public event has triggered furious debate.

Muslim women have been banned from wearing the body-concealing swimming costume known as a burqini in the northern Italian town of Varallo Sesia (Telegraph UK)

The anti-immigration mayor (?) of the northern Piedmont town said: “The sight of a ‘masked woman’ could disturb small children, not to mention problems of hygiene. Â “We don’t have to be tolerant all the time,” Gianluca Buonanno said.

AnÂ overwhelming 94 per cent of heraldsun.com.au readers disagree with the legal ruling approving the contentious ban during next year’s Ramadan.

So far the Premier John Brumby has refused to weigh into the debate about the event, saying he will wait to see the VCAT ruling before making any comment.

VCAT has approved a ban on uncovered shoulders and thighs for a community event to be held at the Dandenong Oasis, a municipal pool.

“Participants aged 10 and over must ensure their bodies are covered from waist to knee and the entire torso extending to the upper arms,” a request by Dandenong City Council and the YMCA states in an exemption application to the Equal Opportunities Act.

“Participants must not wear transparent clothing.”

This issue has also sparked a huge community debate, with well over 700 people commenting on heraldsun.com.au this morning.

Victorian police deem Christanity to be offensive.

According to a report from theÂ ABC an Easter Crucifix re-enactment was shut down by the Victorian police even though there were apparently no complaints.Â Instead officers invoked the ‘reasonable man’ clause which permits police to shutdown an event they think would offend the public.

Given the rank political correctness of the Victorian government, its a fair guess on which segment of the public would find expressions of Christianity offensive and why the police would invoke a hitherto unknown power to shut it down. Continued below the fold>>

Many are abandoning regional centres just weeks after they arrive because there are no mosques within hundreds of kilometres of their new homes.

There are more than 90,000 Muslims in Victoria, and only four mosques in regional areas.Â There are a further 32 mosques in Melbourne.

About 30 Muslim workers have recently left Warrnambool because the nearest mosque is in Geelong- almost 200km away.

The Islamic Council of Victoria said rural towns would suffer if they didn’t start providing devout Muslims with places of worship.

ICV executive committee member Sherene Hassan said four mosques in regional Victoria was not a large number.

“For devout Muslims a mosque is a central aspect of their lives,” Ms Hassan said.

“If Muslims are leaving towns because of this, then this is affecting these towns economically.”

Ms Hassan said the ICV would support any efforts to build new mosques, but said they must be built in consultation with the local community.

“We would want the wider community to support it, and would urge Muslims to consult as widely as possible,” she said.

Warrnambool Muslim community leader Mohamed Khanyari said about 30 workers he had encouraged to move to the state’s west last year had already returned to Melbourne because the area has no mosque.

Curiously, Jane Metlikovec from the Herald Sun doesn’t mention that Â the “Warrnambool Muslim community” is nothing more than a bunch of halal butchers. Why not?

Mr Khanyari said plans to bring more migrant workers to the area would fail if a place of worship was not built soon.

“I am already bringing people here to work, but they just cannot stay, because they are very religious people and they must have somewhere to pray,” Mr Khanyari said.

No they Â “must not have somewhere to pray”. Â Anyhow, who is bringing these “very religious people” to Australia?

Mr Khanyari said Warrnambool was suffering.

“The people I am bringing here are good, skilled workers, but they simply leave because of the situation,” he said.

“It would be good for us, yes, but also good for the town and tourism.

“There are many Muslim families here and we have many visitors who are disappointed when we tell them there is no mosque.”

Mr Khanyari said he would continue to lobby the local council about building a mosque in Warrnambool.

AN insane killer who stabbed his wife to death has won the right to drive a taxi but passengers are not allowed to know his identity.

A tribunal granted the man taxi accreditation despite pleas from Victoria’sÂ Director of Public TransportÂ to ban him from the roads.

AÂ Victorian Civil and Administrative TribunalÂ order prevents Melbourne newspaper theÂ Herald SunÂ revealing the name of the driver, known only as ‘XFJ’.

* Â Looks like our minders and activist judges know best what’s good for us.Â Fits in with Chief Commissioner Christine Nixon’s policy ofÂ not acknowledging a problem, I guess. But I wonder whether helping one unfortunate murderer actually hurts the interests of many hundreds of taxi drivers – and especially those of them that are African, too.

Update: A BBC radio presenter who asked a taxi firm not to send a Asian driver has been sacked.Â Sam Mason made the comments while ordering a taxi for her 14-year-old daughter who she said would be “freaked out” by a turban-wearing driver.
