A coroner this morning returned a verdict of unlawful killing on a Muslim teenager who vanished from home after refusing an arranged marriage, saying she was the victim of a “very vile” murder.

Ian Smith, East and South Cumbria coroner, said the way Shafilea Ahmed’s body had been hidden in a riverbank miles from home convinced him she was murdered, and said she probably died shortly after going missing.

After the verdict Cheshire Police vowed to continue investigating the death of the “beautiful and vulnerable young girl” until the killer or killers had been brought to justice.

Miss Ahmed, 17, disappeared four months after being taken to Pakistan by her parents to meet a potential husband. She refused to go ahead with the ceremony and even drank bleach in protest.

Her inquest heard she regularly suffered domestic abuse at the hands of her parents and was terrified about being forced into marriage.

The inquest heard that early in 2003 she ran away from home, only to be coaxed back on the promise she would not be taken to Pakistan. However, that trip went ahead and she was introduced to a suitor, but refused to go ahead with any wedding.

In September, Miss Ahmed, who wore western clothes and wanted to be a solicitor, disappeared from her home in Warrington, Cheshire.

Four months later her decomposed body was found washed up on a flooded riverbank at Sedgwick, near Kendal. She had been strangled or smothered.

Her parents, Iftikhar and Farzana, were arrested on suspicion of kidnap, and other members of her family were arrested on suspicion of perverting the course of justice. All were released without charge.

A man has been found guilty of stabbing his estranged wife seven times as she dropped off their nine-year-old daughter at school.

Haydar Guvec, 35, attacked Dilek Guvec outside the primary school in Enfield, north London in 2006.

The mother-of-two was stabbed in the side, chest, above the eye and in the top of the head, the Old Bailey heard.

Guvec was found guilty of wounding with intent and will be remanded in custody until 1 February for sentencing.

The (bunch of imbeciles) jury was unable to reach a verdict on a charge of attempted murder.

“He started punching me. I hadn’t seen the knife. I saw that I was stabbed twice in my head and blood was coming from my head.”

Haydar Guvec of Enfield, told police he accidentally cut his wife with a knife he had taken to the school as he was hoping to see his four-year-old son and peel an apple for him.

Bishop backs mosque’s call to prayer

* The churches in Iraq are being firebombed in the name “of the most merciful, the most compassionate”… The Coptic Christians of Egypt are under siege and persistently attacked, their shops smashed up and their daughters kidnapped and forcibly married off to Muslims. Christians are driven out of Bethlehem and Nazareth, their ancestral homelands, Christian schoolchildren are being beheaded in Sulawesi and Cristian churches in Kenya have just been burned to the ground with their congregation inside.

That doesn’t prevent the deluded village idiot of Oxford, the Rev John Pritchard, to tell us that sheep and wolves can all live side by side, if only they would all eat grass.

THE BISHOP of Oxford has rejected another senior clergyman’s fears that piping out the call to prayer in East Oxford could create a “no-go area” for non-Muslims.

The Rt Rev John Pritchard backed plans for the call to prayer in Oxford – rejecting controversial comments made by the Anglican church’s only Asian bishop, the Rt Rev Dr Michael Nazir-Ali, of Rochester.

Bishop Michael had said that attempts were being made to impose an “Islamic character” on communities, creating “no-go areas” where people of different faiths would find it hard to live and work.

But Bishop John said: “I want to distance myself from what the Bishop of Rochester has said.

“I have been with the House of Bishops for the past three days and we agreed there are no no-go areas in this country that we are aware of, and that in all parts of the country there are good inter-faith relationships developing.”

In November, it emerged that leaders at Oxford’s Central Mosque, in Manzil Way, were considering asking for planning permission to issue the call to prayer from the mosque – and Bishop John said he was “very happy” with the move.

Bishop John added: “I would say to anyone who has concerns about the call to prayer to relax and enjoy our community diversity and be as respectful to others as you would hope they would be respectful to you.”

Bishop John said his role meant he acted as a community leader for all faiths, and believed he was respected as such by the Muslim community as by his own.

Sardar Rana, a spokesman for Oxford Central Mosque, has also attacked Bishop Michael’s claims, and said the bishop should be more “broad-minded”.

EXCLUSIVE: A clash of cultures between Asian and eastern European youths is leading to increasing tension and violence on Yorkshire’s streets, it is claimed.
Some young Britons of Asian descent Muhammadans who have settled in the UK are now leading a campaign of intimidation against the new economic migrants from eastern Europe, whom they claim are taking their jobs.

The situation has become so bad in cities like Bradford that a leading social think-tank has begun research into how to get the two sides working together.

The Joseph Rowntree Foundation has commissioned Bradford-based organisation QED to identify the causes of tensions between the two groups and improve cultural understanding and communication between them.

In the introduction to the project it states: “The newly-arrived central and eastern European migrants have settled within five of Bradford’s most deprived communities, which have high percentages of ‘settled’ ethnic minorities.

“There are problems of local cultures clashing and major misunderstandings of each other’s backgrounds and ways of living.”

Project director Mohammed Ali told the Yorkshire Post: “The European Union expansion has had an impact on the number of jobs going to those in the ethnic minority communities – it’s easy to bring in outsiders who will work for less but we run the risk of leaving people behind.

“We’re looking at the causes of tension and ways of bringing the groups together. Communication is the key to these things – we want to look at opportunities to bring people together to share each other’s cultures and backgrounds and experiences.”

While most of the crime between the communities goes no further than verbal threats, car vandalism and petty fights, little gets reported to the police because of the traditional eastern European wariness of authority.

One Asian scholar at a Bradford mosque, who did not want to be named, said: “A lot of Polish people are coming into Bradford at the moment and unfortunately we’re seeing Muslim boys breaking their windows. They’re complaining that the Polish people are coming in and taking their jobs.

* Knowing that Muhammadanism survives mostly on the jiziyah from foolish infidels one would suspect that its not about jobs, but about something else.

Haqueq Siddique, who runs the West Bowling Youth Initiative project in one of the more deprived wards in Bradford, said: “I hear about these issues and tensions but I don’t see them.” There were tensions “but it’s nothing major”.

“About two million people have left Poland since May 2004, many coming to Britain, and about 20 per cent of them were ill-prepared.

Philip Davies, the Conservative MP for Shipley, said: “We’ve been accused of being racist in the past but this proves that the problem with immigration is not about race but about numbers.

“We cannot cope with the numbers coming in from eastern Europe, it places huge tensions in communities, it puts pressure on housing, health services and schools, and as we’re seeing, creates all sorts of problems.”

In the southern Gaza town of Khan Yunis, about 20 masked supporters of an al-Qaida-inspired group calling itself the “Army of the Nation,” displayed weapons in a first public appearance.

The men wore black robes over black pants. Some wore red headbands with the words “death squad.”

A spokesman for the group, who only gave his nom de guerre, Abu Hafs, said Bush was “not welcome” in the Palestinian territories. “We are coming, not to Bush in Tel Aviv, but God willing to Washington,” he said.

A suspected Islamic militant walked into a crowd of police guarding a courthouse and blew himself up Thursday, killing 24 others and wounding dozens in the first major attack in Pakistan since the assassination of Benazir Bhutto.

The blast at Lahore High Court, minutes before a planned anti-government rally by lawyers, was a bloody reminder of the security threats facing this key U.S. ally ahead of Feb. 18 parliamentary elections.

Echoing an extremist tactic in Iraq, suicide attacks have become as commonplace in Pakistan as in neighboring Afghanistan, adding to rising pressures on President Pervez Musharraf as he struggles to stay in office eight years after seizing power in military coup.

At least 20 suicide bombers have struck the past three months in attacks that killed 400 people, many of them from the security forces — the most intense period of terror strikes here since Pakistan allied with the U.S. in its war against al-Qaida and other extremist groups in 2001.

Police said the attacker got into the midst of some 70 officers in riot gear and detonated explosives on his body, spewing shrapnel in a blast that sprawled mangled bodies in pools of blood. All but three of the dead were police officers.

A horse lay dead, still harnessed to a cart. An abandoned motorcycle was toppled in the street a few yards away. Police boots, riot shields and helmets littered the ground.

THAICOM, a private satellite company in Thailand, has begun airing the broadcasts of Hizbullah’s Al-Manar TV. The satellite covers Asia, Australia, Africa, the Middle East, and most of Europe.

The Thai satellite has significantly boosted the resonance of Al-Manar’s propaganda messages around the world, said the Intelligence and Terrorism Information Center (ITIC) in Herzliya, Israel. “This is an outrage,” said ITIC head, Dr. Reuven Erlich. “Other satellites have stopped airing Al-Manar, so Hizbullah has found a way round it.”

Approached by The Media Line THAICOM said it is considering its response and will only offer a formal reaction over the weekend. However, company sources said the decision to transmit Al-Manar broadcasts was a “purely business decision, which had nothing to do with politics.”

THAICOM considers Al-Manar programming as “news and entertainment,” the sources said.

The United States’ Department of State decided in December 2004 to add Al-Manar to its Terrorist Exclusion List. Since then, the European satellites Hispasat and Eutelsat have ceased airing the station’s broadcasts.

“It’s a war. Al-Manar is Hizbullah’s main communication tool, through which it spreads anti-Israeli, anti-Semitic, and anti-American incitement. It spreads Hizbullah and Iranian values of radical Islam,” Erlich explained. He added that the fact that Al-Manar can now be seen in south-east Asia, means that Indonesia and Malaysia, two countries with a large Muslim population, are open to its messages of hatred.

In the past few years since the European satellites stopped airing Al-Manar, the station could only be seen via two Arab satellites: Nilesat and Arabsat. The former is an Egyptian-owned satellite, which broadcasts to the Middle East, North Africa, and a few countries in southern Europe. The latter is a pan-Arab satellite, with approximately the same reach.

GAZA CITY (AFP) Thousands of members of the radical Islamic Jihad marched through Gaza City on Tuesday, shouting “death to Israel and America” in protest at US President George W. Bush’s Middle East tour.

“Bush, you will never halt the march of Islam or the march of the Palestinian people,” Jihad leader Abdullah al-Shami said in an address to protesters on the eve of Bush’s arrival in Israel.

The Palestinians “are sworn to God to fight… for the liberation of Palestine in its entirety… and we will uproot the enemy entity,” he said, referring to Israel.

The angry crowds chanted “Death, death, to America and Israel” as they burned American and Israeli flags in the streets.

Hundreds of other Palestinians in Gaza had earlier protested at Bush’s visit while calling for international pressure on Israel to end punishing sanctions and military strikes aimed at stemming near daily rocket-fire from the increasingly isolated territory.

Protesters waved large pictures of Bush and Israel’s Prime Minister Ehud Olmert with the word “Terrorist” written under them.

After a historical win at the Iowa Caucus and what appears to be another vote of confidence in New Hampshire, questions remain about Barack Hussein Obama’s religious ties.

When Obama announced his candidacy for president, his background entered the fray. Though it appears that he is not held to task on his religious affiliations by the mainstream media, it does re-surface. Let’s explore some recent events that may shed light on Obama’s veiled religious affiliation.

In December 2007, the Trinity United Church of Christ (TUCC) bestowed its highest social achievement award upon Louis Farrakhan, the head of the Nation of Islam. This was facilitated through the church’s publication Trumpet Magazine and presented at their end of the year awards gala. The award dubbed the Lifetime Achievement “Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright, Jr. Trumpet” Award is named after the head pastor that married Barack and Michele Obama nee Robinson.

Girl who fled arranged marriage ‘was smothered or strangled’

A teenage girl found dead in a river after fleeing an arranged marriage was either strangled or smothered, an inquest has heard.

Kendal, Cumbria

The badly decomposed body of Shafilea Ahmed was found by workmen on the bed of the river Kent in Kendal, Cumbria, in February 2004 – five months after she disappeared from her home in Warrington.

A cause of death for the 17-year-old has never been established, but yesterday the pathologist who carried out her post-mortem examination said the possibility that she died of natural causes was “not credible”.

Dr Alison Armour told the inquest in Kendal that it was no longer possible to confirm whether Ms Ahmed had died by strangulation or smothering, because the latter left few marks and her neck muscles had decomposed. Dr Armour also ruled out the possibility that Ms Ahmed had drowned.

The south Cumbria coroner Ian Smith heard that the teenager had run away from home with a male friend before a family trip to Pakistan in 2003, fearing that she would be forced into an arranged marriage.

Superintendent Geraint Jones of Cheshire Police said: “We know she had said that she would be forced into marriage.”

He said Ms Ahmed had told hospital workers that she was the victim of dom-estic abuse and had self-harmed and drunk a “caustic substance”, to find a way out of a forced marriage.

The inquest heard earlier from Ms Ahmed’s father, Iftikhar Ahmed. Mr Ahmed, along with his wife, Farzana, was arrested on suspicion of her kidnap in December 2003 and later released on police bail.

* A pattern that repeats itself…

He told the inquest he was “surprised” when his daughter went missing. He said that she was a “normal child, very bright” but that “problems arose” when she went to sixth form.

Ms Ahmed was last seen on 11 September 2003 and was reported missing by a teacher at Sankey High School on 18 September.

A mother and daughter, Eniz Byron and Heather Gibbon from Sedgwick, near Kendal, told the inquest they had seen a white van parked haphazardly near the river around the time she was missing.

They also said they had noticed an “awful” smell at the spot a few weeks later. It was the spot where Ms Ahmed’s body was found.

Ms Ahmed’s parents, who have offered a £5,000 reward to catch her killer, have always maintained they had nothing to do with her death.

Five other relatives – believed to live in the Bradford area, where Shafilea was born – were arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to pervert the course of justice, but were also released on police bail.

The inquest continues until the end of this week.
