Perhaps it had to be someone like Michael Nazir-Ali, the first Asian bishop in the Church of England, who would break with convention and finally point out the elephant in the room.

His comments last week about the growing stranglehold of Muslim extremists in some communities revived debate about the future of multiculturalism and provoked a flurry of condemnation. Members of all three political parties immediately clamoured to dismiss him. “I don’t recognise the description that he’s talked about – no-go areas and people feeling intimidated,” said Hazel Blears, the communities secretary.

A quick call to her Labour colleague John Reid, the former home secretary, would almost certainly have helped her to identify at least one of those places. Just over a year ago Reid was heckled by the Muslim extremist Abu Izzadeen in Leytonstone, east London, during a speech on extremism, appropriately. “How dare you come to a Muslim area,” Izzadeen screamed.

That picture is mirrored outside London. One of our country’s biggest and most deprived Muslim areas is Small Heath, in Birmingham, where Dr Tahir Abbas, director of the Centre for the Study of Ethnicity and Culture, was raised. With a dominant Asian monoculture, low social achievement and high unemployment, Small Heath is precisely the kind of insular and disengaged urban ghetto Nazir-Ali was talking about.

Reflecting on his experiences there, Abbas is critical of his peers who don’t stray beyond their area. “They haven’t seen rural Devon, a stately home or Windsor Castle,” he says. That refusal to engage with anything beyond the community is suffocating young Muslims by divorcing them almost entirely from Britain’s cultural heritage and mainstream life.

A German-Turk, a Saudi and an Australian were already in Germany planning an attack on Berlin’s Justice Ministry or other such agencies in order to avenge the prosecution of al Qaeda suspects in Germany, Focus reported, without citing sources. The report said explosives for the plot were already within Germany.

France: Terror plot to blow up Eiffel Tower uncovered

A plot by Islamic terrorists to blow up the Eiffel Tower has been uncovered.Paris’s socialist mayor, Bertrand Delanoe, has been given extra security protection after an Islamist website used by Al Qaeda members listed him as a target.

Mr Delanoe – one of France’s few openly gay politicians – was stabbed in an anti-gay attack in 2002.

In January 2005, French intelligence officers arrested three French-born Algerians suspected of plotting to blow up the Eiffel Tower.

Italy: Halal butcher gets a shoe in the ass

(ANSA) – Turin, January 9 – Italy on Wednesday deported to Morocco a Muslim cleric who the interior ministry said posed a risk for national security.

Mohamed Kohaila, 44, was an imam or prayer leader at a
mosque in Turin who was secretly filmed last year giving what
was considered to be an anti-Western sermon.
The video was broadcast by state television on a news
talk show in March after which both local judicial
authorities and the interior ministry opened investigations.
Although the magistrates here decided the case should be
shelved, a probe by the interior ministry, which
re-translated the video footage, concluded that the imam was
dangerous and should be expelled.
Kohaila had been in Italy for the past 15 years and
operated a specialised butcher shop in Turin.
He was considered to be the right hand of another Turin
imam, Bouriki Bouchta, who was expelled from Italy in
September 2005.

Iran says IAEA, rather than UN Security Council, should deal with its nuclear program

The Supreme Leader of Iran, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, said on Saturday that the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) – not the UN Security Council – should be the international body responsible for dealing with Iran’s nuclear program in a meeting with IAEA Director General Mohamed ElBaradei in Tehran.

Ahmadinejad: We won’t cave in to pressure

The Iranian news agency FARS reported that ElBaradei praised Iranian cooperation with his agency in recent months. He stressed that it is Iran’s right to use nuclear power for the development of their country and noted that negotiations are the only way to resolve the nuclear issue.

Earlier on Saturday, ElBaradei met with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who called upon the IAEA “not to cave in to pressure from Western powers” and said that the UN nuclear watchdog must “fulfill his obligations in a just and legal manner.”

The Iranian president went on to say that “We must annul the Western powers’ view that nuclear energy is equal to an atom bomb.”

Since all of Guantanamo’s inmates, mirabile dictu, happen to be members of the same famed band of Muslim extremists, the Army has seen fit to distribute Korans. So far, so good, I guess. But the Army doesn’t just distribute its Korans like any other religious book. That is, the Bible may get passed around, rifled through, dropped, tossed and stuffed into hotel room drawers. But not the Koran. According to Army policy, the standard operating procedure is: “Handle the Koran as if it were a fragile piece of delicate art.”

What’s going on here? By official order, a whole lot of “respecting the dignity of the Koran.” According to Section 6-5-c(3), should a Koran need to be removed from a detainee’s cell — you know, carried somewhere — and the detainee is personally unable to move it (best option), and the Muslim chaplain, librarian and interpreter are also unable to move it (second-best option), then the U.S. Army guard, as a very last resort, may take action — but only “after approval by the DOC (who notes this in the DIMS).”

Then the insanity really begins. The guard is directed to don “clean gloves … in full view of the detainees prior to handling.” He must use “two hands … at all times when handling the Koran in a manner signaling respect and reverence.” Why “respect” alone isn’t abundantly sufficient isn’t mentioned. While signaling two-handed respect and reverence, however, the guard must be mindful that “care should be used so that the right hand is the primary one used to manipulate any part of the Koran due to the cultural association with the left hand.”

The Islamist Argument on the Koran

In the January 6 issue of the New York Times Book Review, Tariq Ramadan has an essay that argues, in its essence, that non-believers cannot really read or understand the Koran-because it speaks exclusively to believers.

One’s heart, Ramadan argues, is one’s guide for understanding the Koran, and the heart can only lead you once “the heart has made the message of Islam its own.”

So, in essence, an outsider (infidel) cannot understand the text, therefore an outsider really cannot have a valid opinion about the text because an outsider does not understand what he or she is talking about, because it is not on a rational plane.

This is an argument that, of course, means looking at the historial record of Islam, the more explicit verses on killing Jews and infidels, and waging _jihad_, as well as the true meaning of _jihad_, cannot be debated by infidels.

Islamists themselves will define the texts and their meaning for us, on their terms exclusively. We need not bother even trying.

That is akin to saying that, if one is not a born again Christian one should not attempt biblical scholarship, and perhaps some argue that. In reality, the historical texts can be read, examined, looked at for internal consistencies and inconsistencies, debated and dissected.

That is the rational response to the endeavor to understand history. One can have a different interpretation of texts one believes to be divine, but that does not negate the validity of scholarship.

This leads directly to the issue raised by the decision of the Joint Chiefs to not allow attorney and US Army intelligence reserve Major Stephen Coughlin to continue with his work on Islamic law in the Pentagon.

The main problem for the Islamists such as Hasham Islam, and their fellow travelers, such as ISNA, MPAC, Fiqh Council and AMCE, inside and around the Pentagon who worked to get rid of him, is that Coughlin, as a non-Muslim, and a legal scholar, with decade of experience in legal texts working for Westlaw and LexisNexis, as well as in military intelligence, often knew the Islamic texts better than the Islamists themselves. Coughlin’s MA thesis is in Islamic law.

How embarrassing to have a non-believer who is an expert on Sharia law, and the Islamic texts, be able to debate intelligently and articulately, and use the texts themselves to inform their analysis and argument.

The answer, of course, is to say he cannot understand because he is not a Muslim. This is a classic logical fallacy. Nevertheless, this argument seems to have prevailed, at least for the moment, in Coughlin’s case. As Bill Gertz has reported, there seems to be some rallying to his defense and against the indefensible action of silencing the only true scholar in these issues that the Pentagon has.

In last years conference ‘Islam in Europe’ it was  Tariq Ramadan who proclaimed the most worrying statement: The real intentions of Euroislam must be concealed from the general public. Quite a harsh and frank statement, considering that he must anticipate being quoted in the media. But maybe he just cynically relies on the negligence of “the infidels”?

Although much embarrassing criticism has been published about Tariq Ramadan and his version of Euroislam, it hasn’t done much harm to his reputation as a modern and moderate European Muslim who sincerely wants to work for the peaceful integration of Muslims into Western societies. Tariq Ramadan continues to be a frequent and acknowledged guest at official conferences all over Europe, not least in the Nordic countries, where he lately has been used as an expert on countering the radicalization of Muslim youths, among other things. He is held in high esteem among young educated Danish Muslims.

Some Pentagon and military leaders, along with lots of working-level officials, are quietly rallying to support ousted Joint Staff counterterrorism analyst Stephen Coughlin.

Pentagon officials said a number of generals and admirals who share Mr. Coughlin’s well-reasoned assessment of the Islamic law underpinnings of Islamist terror are voicing support for the lawyer and former military intelligence official.

Mr. Coughlin was fired as a Joint Staff contractor after his confrontation with Hasham Islam, a special assistant to Deputy Defense Secretary Gordon England, was reported here last month.

Mr. Islam, a Muslim, referred to Mr. Coughlin as a “Christian zealot with a pen” during the meeting several weeks ago, a slur rejected by Mr. Coughlin’s supporters.

Critics of Mr. Coughlin are spreading word — falsely — that he is being let go because he talked out of school to the press. One official suggested the action was due to budget cuts.

But defense and military officials supportive of Mr. Coughlin said the real reason is that critics, like Mr. Islam. want him sidelined because they oppose his hard-to-refute views on the relationship between Islamic law and Islamist jihad doctrine. Those views have triggered a harsh debate challenging the widespread and politically correct view of Islam as a religion of peace hijacked by extremists.

“Steve Coughlin is the most knowledgeable person in the U.S. government on Islamic law,” said retired Air Force Lt. Gen. Thomas McInerney. “The secretary of defense should ensure that he stays at DOD.”

Another booster is Marine Corps Lt. Gen. Samuel Helland, commanding general of the 1st Marine Expeditionary Corps, who said in November that Mr. Coughlin’s briefing for Marines bound for Iraq “hit the mark in explaining how jihadists use the Koran to justify their actions.”

“Your presentation has armed service men and women with more intellectual ammunition to take the fight to the enemy,” Gen. Helland said in a letter.

A U.S. Central Command analyst, Neal Harper, stated in an e-mail to friends, that if Mr. Coughlin is allowed to become a casualty in the war of ideas “then I’m deeply concerned about the future course of the war on terrorism.”

“Ignoring Steve Coughlin’s honest assessments and terminating his contract sets a dangerous and disturbing precedent,” Mr. Harper stated. “We struggled for many years to get our heads around radical Islam, and Steve has been a leader in the effort.”

Mr. Harper said Mr. Coughlin should be promoted, but instead “Hasham Islam is allowed to insult him publicly.”

Iraq Assignments Upset Some Diplomats

WASHINGTON (AP) – Several hundred U.S. diplomats vented anger and frustration Wednesday about the State Department’s decision to force foreign service officers to take jobs in Iraq, with some likening it to a “potential death sentence.”

In a contentious hourlong town-hall meeting, they peppered officials responsible for the order with often hostile complaints about the largest diplomatic call-up since Vietnam. Announced last week, it will require some diplomats – under threat of dismissal – to serve at the embassy in Baghdad and in reconstruction teams in outlying provinces.

Many expressed serious concern about the ethics of sending diplomats against their will to work in a war zone – where the embassy staff is largely confined to the protected “Green Zone” – as the department reviews use of private security guards to protect its staff.

``Incoming is coming in every day, rockets are hitting the Green Zone,” said Jack Croddy, a senior foreign service officer who once worked as a political adviser with NATO forces.

Tehran, 11 Jan. (AKI) – In the past year, the incidence of AIDS has doubled in the holy Shia city of Qom, second only to the Iraqi city of Najaf in religious significance.

“The great share of the newly infected have contracted the HIV virus, not through using infected syringes, but through unprotected sexual relations,” said Amir, Akbari, director of the city’s health centre.

In the past year the number of those affected by AIDS in Qom has risen from 177 to 324.

Forty per cent of those infected are students from the theological colleges in Qom. In Iran, according to official estimates, there are more than 16,000 infected with AIDS in the country, while non-government organisations put the total number above 100,000.

Norway: Money sent to Pakistani koran schools disappeared

Norway has paid several million kroner to 118 koran schools in Pakistan. Local imams are now looking for the money.

While the head of a madrassa school in the area of Swat said to Norwegian TV that his school has not received even one kroner of support from Norwegian authorities, the foreign ministry thinks that money was not paid to the local authorities. The Norwegian embassy in Islamabad has been assured by a consultant that everything would go to the schools.

Norway said it would support koran schools in North-West Pakistan, without making any demands as to the educational program. Research organization International Crisis Group (ICG) had advised against such support and says the schools are dangerous to international security. Koran schools in Karachi contributed to training and recruiting of jihadis to Afghanistan and Kashmir.

“Peace in our time” alert from Mindanao

Manila, 11 Jan. (AKI) – The Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), the Philippines’ largest Muslim rebel group (photo), has announced it is ready for war, if attacked.

The statement, made by Eid Kabalu, MILF military spokesman, is a response to a recent comment by interior and local government secretary Ronaldo Puno threatening to stop talks with the MILF.

“We are open to all possibilities. We have the right to defend ourselves in our homeland,” Kabalu said, quoted by daily The Sun Star’on Friday. However, he asserted that war was the last resort.

A day earlier, the MILF official website, Luwaran, cited Puno as saying: “If the MILF doesn’t want our agreement, if they do not want to respect our Constitution, then let us stop negotiating and just continue with the war.”

The rising tension follows the latest stumbling block that has, at least temporarily, halted peace talks between the two sides.

In December, the MILF negotiating panel in Kuala Lumpur, for a round of consultations, refused to meet their government’s counterparts after they were presented a draft of a proposed memorandum of agreement that omitted most of the ‘consensus points’ on a homeland or ‘ancestral domain’ that two sides had previously agreed on.

The consensus points – first agreed in October 2004 – allegedly include the boundaries of a new Muslim controlled homeland, its maritime borders and details of natural resource sharing with the central government.

Manila’s condition that any agreement is implemented via constitutional means – meaning a referendum – especially angered the MILF.

A proposal to expand the Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) from four to 14 provinces was rejected in a 2001 plebiscite.

The ARMM is the current, Muslim-administered region in Mindanao.

The Philippines is predominantly Catholic. Most of its approximately 4.5 million Muslims live in southern Mindanao and the Sulu Archipelago.

The MILF was formed in 1977 and has since fought to establish and independent Muslim state in the region.

MILF claim to have observed a cease-fire since 2003 although the Philippine government has attributed some terrorist attacks to the organisation.

The MILF denies any involvement in terror attacks and claim that bombings attributed to them were committed by splinter groups not under their control.

CALGARY – Outspoken conservative commentator Ezra Levant will be before the Alberta Human Rights Commission Friday defending his former magazine’s 2006 publication of a series of Danish cartoons depicting the 7th century cultleader Prophet Muhammad, worshiped by his adherents as some kind of prophet.

Members of Calgary’s Muslim community were outraged when Levant’s now-defunct publication, the Western Standard, published the cartoons in February 2006, shortly after their initial appearance in a Danish newspaper led to rioting and protests around the world.

Levant, the magazine’s former publisher, will be on the hot seat today in Calgary during a commission investigation – a process he calls an “interrogation” – in which he’ll be questioned extensively about the publication of the cartoons.

“I object to the whole proceeding. It doesn’t have any moral authority,” Levant said Thursday in an interview.
